The happy hour here is an amazing deal! The food is tasty -- the mussels are my favorite. They are super flavorful and it's a surprisingly large portion for only $5 at HH ($8 otherwise). The broth is so freaking good. The bread that they give for free is kinda terrible, so I get fries to complement the mussels and dip into the broth instead. Meatballs and arancini also great. Brussel sprouts can be skipped. Off the HH menu, the Cipollina pizza is DELICIOUS! The mushrooms, caramelized onion, and the balsamic reduction, and goat cheese combo is heeeeaven. The goat cheese is not overpowering at all, everything is just really well balanced. Great not-bready crust. Been here twice and haven't had an issue with parking yet. read more

I've been a fan of Cipollina for 14 years and have never had a bad meal here. Handmade pasta, delicious pizzas, and great salads. Oh and the french fries are to die for. There is parking and even though it's downtown it's off the main streets so it's never too crowded. Love it. read more

Had made a reservation and went for dinner to Cipollina on a Saturday evening with a group of friends. The inside of the restaurant is pretty dark, but I liked that there was plenty of spacing between tables. While there are not many vegetarian options, I ordered the spinach alfredo gnocchi. The gnocchi was delicious and they had generous portion sizes for all entrees ordered. I ate half my meal before realizing I forgot to get a picture of it! Our entire group was very happy with our meals and our server was very pleasant. Overall, I had a positive experience. Giving it 4 stars due to lack of vegetarian-friendly options. It would also be nice if the menu indicated what items are GF, vegetarian, vegan, etc. There is a small private parking lot available to park in for free. Cute little Italian bistro right near Pease park. We arrived around 1 pm with a group of 7 and unfortunately there was only 1 server so the service was pretty slow. The food was pretty good though and came out pretty quick. Three of us got the spaghetti and meatballs including myself. It needed a little more flavor so we all added Parmesan cheese and I added a little sea salt which helped. The pasta seemed to be house made and it was amazing! Everyone seemed to like what they got. Only 2 of us left with leftovers. We had all been outside all morning already and were extremely thirsty we went and asked the food runner to bring us to water pitchers otherwise we would have never got refills. I'm a regular at Cipollina because their arugula salad is 10/10, but I'm shouting them out for the exceptional birthday dinner we just had. I would keep going back just for the food, but the service was the cherry on top that made the night so memorable. I love these neighborhood restaurants which make you feel like you are part of the neighborhood. Cipollina shares a space with Fresh Plus grocery. Parking may be tricky in that regards. Once you are inside, it has this small, intimate feel to the restaurant. My friends and I were celebrating an early birthday for me. We liked the food and the service. I liked the calamari which I always order if a restaurant has it. The calamari comes with aioli and tomato sauce. My friend ordered the roasted vegetables and those were good. Besides you need your veggies! For the main course I ordered the Spinach Gnocci Alfredo which was good and filling. Then for dessert, I had their tiramisu, which is another item if a restaurant has I automatically order. Their tiramisu was good and they gave me a huge slice. read more

The food is just....bad. I ordered the chicken Parmesan sandwich and asked for the bread on the side. The "chicken" tasted like fish and it also had the same consistency as fish...it like flaked like salmon would but then tough and dry at the same time. The breading was thick and mushy and just looked bad. Needless to say I didn't eat a bite of the chicken. I was with co-workers so I cut it up and moved it around to make it look like I ate it. Tried to eat the garlic bread they gave me and even that was terrible. I've been here twice and will not return. read more

Well, with a $25 gift certificate proverbially burning a hole in my pocket, Cipollina was the newest restaurant in my Yelp review crosshairs. As mentioned before, I was asked to write one, and possibly take some photos. Which is easy, since Yelping has become such a compulsio,n that friends and family alike sit with their hands neatly folded in their laps when their meals are placed on the table; they know not to touch before pictures. They also pray I don't spill their guts in the subsequent review, as I am wont to do. I promise nothing. An informal Facebook status update inquiring who wanted to be my date for the experience yielded me several responses, although I'm not sure if they read the disclaimer that I usually put out on the first date, but this was an exception. The first to respond was Mani, a friend of mine who finds everything I do to be fabulous, hilarious, and pretty much close to brilliant. Naturally, I respond to this. We made a date for Happy Hour after work; Cipollina's Happy Hour is from 5:00-6:00 on weekdays, with half-off sparkling wines and aperitifs and half-off small plates. The deals bring drinks and appetizers to a very reasonable $5-9 a piece; I only wish Happy Hour lasted a tad longer, although if you put your orders in, you will have no problem enjoying your appetizers. As I was driving to the restaurant, I realized how little of the area I have "filled" in on my mental map of the city. Aside from a post-church brunch with the St. David's Young Adults at Zocalo across the street, I have not had the pleasure of discovering the Clarksville area as in-depth as I should. I was greeted by a smiling hostess who reminded me a little of P!nk, except way more put together. I chose to sit at the bar and wait for Mani who was running a few minutes behind. I relaxed with a carpenè malvolti prosecco from Veneto, Italy. My server was a cute guy named Greg who--quite surprisingly--rocked a mustache...a male grooming choice I usually detest. First surprise of the day. The space itself is modern but quaint, with a distinct urban feel. The high ceilings and large black-framed mirrors worked to make the space feel roomy, yet still intimate. The fact that the kitchen is basically out for everyone to see at the far end of the bar was also a unique touch I appreciated. Mani showed up, and noticed I had already pressed ahead and ordered the fried squid & shrimp cracked red pepper w/ tomato aïoli. As opposed to other "small plate" offerings around town, there was plenty to share among two; the second surprise of the day. Their version of calamari was decent and seasoned well. There was so much, I actually had them box up the leftovers from this dish. Not that we're cheap, but the clock was a-ticking so we put in our order for the p.e.i. mussels in white wine w/ capers and anchovy; the panzanella yellowfin tuna w/ cannellini beans, pickled onions and olives, and the charcuterie platter, complete with speck prosciutto, pork rillette, duck confit, and antelope pate. Greg even drew me a little legend complete with shapes and names to make sure we'd know what we were eating (and privately, so I'd remember the names for the review). The mussels were bountiful and delicious in their buttery white wine sauce. They explained that the tuna was atop a southern Italian style salad, which I found refreshing. Personally, I enjoy the rawness of the tuna, but to Mani, this was the weakest of the four dishes. The charcuterie platter was excellent, as there's never a time I dislike duck confit or spicy prosciutto. The antelope pate was interesting, to say the least. The whole time I was eating it, I couldn't help but have James Earl Jones' booming Mufasa voice in my head: Simba: But dad, don't we eat the antelope? Mufasa: Yes, Simba, but let me explain. When we die, our bodies become the grass and the antelope eat the grass. And so we are all connected in the great circle of life... ...Which I always thought was a load of crap, because one animal gets violently torn to shreds, while the other gets to die on top of the food chain, and never even know they're being recycled as gentle grazing fodder. Anyways...in this circle of life, the fabulous guy eats the antelope pate, and it pretty much ends there. Suck it, antelope. Of course it goes without saying the topics of conversation were pretty much limited to our work experiences, and talking mad smack about the people we can't stand. Mani and I each enjoyed a glass of French famaey malbec rosé, vintage 2010, paired with an American Marlboro cigarette, vintage 'purchased-20 -minutes-ago-from-a-7-11. We sat at a little table outside the door. At some point, Mani couldn't help but call out one ginger server who was hot, but clearly hungover. It happens. Great portions, great space, interesting culinary offerings. I'll be back. 4 Stars. read more

I've been wanting to check Cipollina's out for a while, especially since they have a HH pizza special during the week. I checked out their menu online and read the reviews, and it seems like it would be a pretty good place. Since I recently had a 5 star pizza experience at Pie Guys I kinda figured that this place could easily match that - - right? Not. I recognize this place, I've been here before years ago, I think it used to be a coffee shop / bakery, so that tells you either it's a tough location to generate revenue or the coffee / bakery theme just didn't work out. I walk in, it looks nice, dark wood floors, large mirrors on the walls. No one greets me so I find a seat myself. No one approaches my table for at least 4-5 min so I stand up and head to the cash register. I ask "is this where I'm supposed to order?". A young man says "yes - the menus are next to the register". Ah, okay, didn't know that. I ordered a pizza, and asked if they could do a half-n-half (yes), so I got half Lamb Sausage and half Prosciutto & Goat Cheese. You also have to pay (and tip) first before you're served (not a big fan of that either). Some of the reviews said the food came out fast - but not today. When my pizza came out the first thing I noticed was that half of the outer crust was black. I personally don't think I would serve that - or I would at least ask the customer if that was okay, and it did not look appetizing. The crust is very thin and crispy (good). The lamb sausage was in itty bitty bits and scarce - so scarce that I couldn't tell by tasting it if it was lamb or beef. I felt like going up to the chefs (open kitchen) and asking "Where's The Beef?!?". Very disappointing. The Prosciutto & Goat slices were good, but not great, since the meat seemed somewhat dried out (like jerky). Meanwhile as I munch around my burnt crust, a couple comes in and bypasses the register and sits down next to me. Within 2 minutes they are greeted and given 2 menus + silverware (wow, am I that ugly?) and are told that they can put in their orders up at the register. The young man then comes by and fills up my water - - and never comes back again. From there I have to go back up and refill my water twice. On my way up there I look at the other customers who are munching on their pizza to see if they have burnt crusts - - nope. Blackened burnt crust + inconsistent processes + lack of quality customer service (ran by very young men) + itty-bitty pieces of lamb sausage + uncomfortable wooden chair seating = barely 2-star experience. Barely. It would be 1-star, but I think this place does have potential - if they get their sh*t straight and be consistent and continually improve their quality and customer service. Next time if I'm in the pizza mood I'll save a few bucks and head back to Pie Guys for that awesome Margarita pizza. At least I can see and taste the ingredients there. read more

We stopped in for the HH pizza/wine special on a Sunday evening. We went on a Sunday in hopes that it wouldn't be overly crowded & as luck would have it - it was a very quiet evening at Cipollina. At first our waiter seemed dismayed that we were there for the HH special - I guess he thought that we weren't going to tip much since we were there for a special. We decided to use the discount to order a carafe of the Solitude Côtes du Rhône, France 2007. Our waiter was very helpful and offered samples of the Solitude and D'oupia Hérétiques so we could decide. Funny enough, the more expensive wine tasted better to me so I ordered up. We each ordered soup (one tomato & cucumber and one corn soup) a Margherita pizza and a Kale pizza. Both of the soups were very good and had nice flavors and spices. We were both happy with our pizza orders too. The crust was wonderfully thin and crispy, and a nice light brown in areas on the bottoms. We finished off the dinner with dessert & coffee. I can't find the name of the chocolate dessert we ordered, but it was delicious and totally worth the cost. All in all we had a very nice meal, saved a bunch of money with the HH special, but spent the savings on the appetizers, wine carafe and coffee. I'd recommend trying Cipollina on an less busy night like a Sunday if you've never been there before. I hear it can get pretty busy/loud on the weekends.. read more

Live down the street from Cipollina and decided to check it out this week. Have to say while the food was good we were underwhelmed by the service. Went in around 530p on a Thursday evening. Literally it was us and one couple at the bar tables. Our waiter, don't know his name as he never gave it, was pretty uninterested in serving. Could have been an off night but the only time he seemed interested was when it was time to bring the check and give him his tip. We had the bruschetta, which was really nice. I had a small chopped salad which was nothing special. My friend has the garlic shrimp pasta dish. Shrimp was good but not much garlic flavor and a bit bland. Nice wine selection and cute little place. May deserve one more chance but wonder if so empty because early or because I'm not the only one who wasn't super impressed? read more

It's been a few years since I last reviewed this neat little restaurant. And, the reason why I even went back was the happen chance to meet the current chef Daniel Hunt. He is a friend of mines high school buddy from Bastrop. The Suzimeister is in her childhood hood, so while the cat is away the mice will play. I hooked up with my best mate Ade and off we went to enjoy a wonderful meal. The nice thing about dining here without my honey, is that I can eat all the things which she cannot. Mainly shell fish. I started with their mussels. When they arrived I asked that they bring us some spoons. Ade looked at me puzzled and I mentioned, it was to slurp out the jus... It was a great starter. That was followed by green neck mussels with pasta and venison sausage. Awesome! We finished with an awesome cheese plate. It was a night and day difference since I first went and ate her a few years back, it is definitely the work of the new chef. Our server, can't recall his name was a little distracted, but in all he got the job done. I'll grab the wife and head on back again to enjoy another great meal, I can see this becoming another great little hang out for us. read more

Simply the worst customer service experience ever! After receiving great news that her cancer treatment was working, my 83 year old mother had but one wish. - to go out to a restaurant and celebrate. (Yes she's vaccinated). A major milestone since she hasn't left our house or had any visitors to speak of in over 6 months, probably 12 months. After calling Cipollina at 5:50 to confirm that 5 of us could come and that we could sit inside, we agreed to be there by 6:20. So we packed everyone up in their respective wheel chairs for stroll through the neighborhood giddy at the opportunity that lay ahead. Upon arrival we were turned away. They claim that we didn't call ahead. I assure you we did and showed them my phone log to prove it. They were unimpressed and continued to refuse service. More concerned with wondering who I talked to then the customers in front of them. I wish I could remember, but certainly they are in charge of their reservation process. I will never forget the disappointment on my mother's face. read more

My lunch at Cipollina was just fine - it's a cute spot that happened to be blocks away from my next appointment. We arrived near noon to a mostly empty restaurant, but by the time we left they were pretty full. The menu has a good selection of wood fired pizzas, pastas, sandwiches and salads. I went on the lighter side and had an order of the white bean dip which was served with "crostini and fresh vegetables". The dip was delicious but the only veg served with was broccoli which seemed a little odd. I would have liked a bit more variety, but not a big deal. The person I was with picked a special "chopped salad" - what arrived wasn't in any way "chopped". There were large pieces of romaine (like in a Caesar salad), big chunks of cheese and large slices of salami. For $17, not really impressed. Tango dancing on Thursdays here is talked about around town, and there's no judgment on skill as long as the love of the Tango is apparent. So you could say I enjoyed it. Our service was great and we didn't have a wait on a Monday night but I will say the night time environment isn't anything fancy or special. As some of you know the Foolish boys set out on a short local Foolish Tour on Saturday. My memory of many years ago remembered a coffee/desert place on West Lynn. Well as it turns out my memory was on the fritz. Me bad! So we headed over to West Lynn to look for it, I remember it being near Jeffery's on the other side of the street. As it turns out it was Cipollina. We stopped and went in; well guess what it is now a pizza place must have been too many years ago that it was something else. Bummer we talked to the wait staff about it and looked at their menu to see if any desert they had was what we were looking for. Sorry it wasn't, one of our team saw that they had crème brûlée (pronounced as creme ber-lee). We all had a laugh over it. We all decided to leave without eating anything; we were looking for a different kind of desert. The pizza smelled good and we will return at some point to try the pizza. The wait staff was very nice and under stood why we left. So my ratings are on atmosphere and wait staff only. Would I go back? Yes to try the pizza. read more

Came here for girls night on Saturday and had a blast. As primi we had risotto w/ caramelized fennel, apple, tarragon and the tagliatelle con funghi. The risotto wasn't great, but the tagliatelle con funghi was delicioussssss. I only wish there had been more on the plate. We got the prosciutto pizza (mozzarella, tallegio, arugula) and the pancetta affumicata pizza (caramelized onions, bacon, spinach, mozzarella, gorgonzola). The Pancetta affumicata pizza was amazing!!! I will go back for just this dish. The prosciutto pizza was also good! But definitely the second favorite on the table. For dessert we had honey toasted creme brulee, pumpkin affogato and the peanut butter marsarpone cheesecake. They were all delicious and complimented one another. This looks like a cute little neighborhood gem. Everybody in our party of 9 loved their food. Our Waitress was appropriately attentive and had great suggestions on what to order. The spaghetti and meatballs was perfectly al dente; we wished it had a bit more sauce, though. All our pizzas were crisp and tasty. The arancini was so good we ordered a second plate for the table.
