The recently opened Circa at the Boro is part of the local hospitality team Metropolitan Hospitality Group (https://www.eatmhg.com). I've been a long time fan of the the Circa at Foggy Bottom (https://www.yelp.com/biz/circa-at-foggy-bottom-washington-2?sort_by=date_asc), having patronized that location numerous times before shows at the Kennedy Center, as well as for lunch outings when my office was still down in DC.
This newest Circa location at The Boro, is something this ever burgeoning section of Tysons desperately needs. There is a dearth of quality dining options in Tysons which not only offer tasty food, but also provide great service at a value price point. IMHO, Circa checks all those boxes.
I met up with a friend for a HH and was thoroughly impressed by the experience. Be forewarned, that the HH (which runs from 4-7pm) is extremely popular and the compact (translation: small) bar area fills up quickly.
In fact, the only real detraction I have for this location is the footprint of the space, which is noticeably smaller than their other restaurants. Upon walking in, the main dining room is off to the left, with the bar taking up the other half to the right. The interior is decidedly modern with muted brown being the dominant color scheme, soft off white illumination from pendant lighting, and reserved print floor tiles completing the look. I will say, that because of the choice of flooring, during peak dining times, the decibel level is elevated (in the bar area anyway) and you'll likely have to raise your voice to be heard.
The crowd for HH will be the usual suspects of business casual attired and lanyard wearing folks - many of whom likely are employed or draw their employment in some form or fashion from the US government.
While I typically enjoy a cold beer after a long day (of which there is an extensive list of $5 draft beers during HH), of late, I've rediscovered bourbon and wanted to try their Old Fashioned. True to my Asian palate, I enjoy an Old Fashioned because has that "sweet but not too sweet" flavor profile. Circa prepares a superior Old Fashioned, because you can detect the sweetness from the sugar and slight bitterness from the bitters with being able to make out the caramel and vanilla flavor from the bourbon.
Food wise, small plates and flatbreads are $2 during HH, and 2-3 plates should be PLENTY as a light to full meal. We ordered the hummus with ground wagyu beef, chicken wings, and rustic Italian flatbread. Again, I've always like the food at Circa, and would characterize it as "Contemporary American fare." I would hesitate to even call this bar food, since everything was competently prepared and well seasoned.
Good chicken wings should never be greasy, and these were not. A spicy, slightly sweet apricot glaze were applied to the meaty wings and were served with the requisite carrot and celery sticks; The house blue cheese dressing was great! The hummus definitely had notes of tahini and the picked chilis and pine nuts gave it a good crunch. I kind of wish we had taken our server suggestion and gotten the spiced cauliflower option, since I found the ground up wagyu beef to be a bit dry - it was still a good appetizer since the accompanying garlic naan bread was perfect for dipping.
The flatbread is a real deal at $13. Hand stretched dough is baked in a high heat oven and topped with sopressata, local Italian sausage, roasted red peppers, mozzarella, and a light marina sauce. I love a pizza/flatbread that doesn't skimp on toppings, and Circa loads them on here. The Italian meats had a nice spice mixture and saltiness, which contrasted nicely with the chewy/crispy crust.
Service was also top-notch with various bartenders and servers popping by to remove plates, refill water glasses, and check up on us. And don't forget to get your parking ticket validated at the front desk, if you parked in one of the nearby garages.
I usually avoid Tysons during rush hour because of the horrific traffic, but Circa may make me reevaluate that position. read more
