This restaurant is a great place to come to with a group of friends for drinks and to enjoy the ambiance. Personally I thought the food was average, not bad but nothing special. I got the Johnny sandwich for brunch and it was just okay, I liked the salad more that came with it. They have a nice drink selection and I loved the rooftop. One thing to note though is that they definitely were not following social distancing guidelines for COVID. The tables were really close to one another. I walked in I got a table right away, however, the server was not friendly and she only came back to the table with 2 mimosas when we ordered four. The service was not all that great. Overall, there was not a good brunch vibe, there was no music. It was hard for me to see the waitress throughout our meals. I was somewhat disappointed considering that it was brunch time. It may have seemed like they may have been short staffed. The steak was very small and there seems to have been cross-contamination because I didn't order onions and peppers and there was onions and peppers on my plate. They had no grape jelly which is my favorite but overall the food was alright it was good nothing too special. Brunch is also $10 per glass most brunch places I've been to they offer a pitcher or something of some sort but it's $10 for every glass of mimosa so be aware when you start feeling nice and start going crazy ordering mimosas. Came here on a Monday night for some burgers since there were some mentions from previous Yelp reviews that the burgers were good. It was around 4:30 and not busy. Service was good. I have to agree. I had the Chimichurri burger and my husband had the Bistro burger. Both were delicious BUT I wish the chimichurri burger had some chimichurri. :( It wasn't in the description but it's in the name of the burger! My husband thought the Bistro burger was also very good - just wished it had more Bistro sauce. Fries were thin cut fries and came out hot and nicely cooked. We also had the special tartufo - which had pistaschio ice cream and was very good. My husband order Strawberry Fields Forever cocktail which was very strong and needed a touch more sweetness. Knocking my original review down to 4 stars because the last time we went, we had to eat on the roof because we didn't make reservations. That's fine, as the food is the same, but the Bloody Mary is half the size, served in a tiny plastic cup when they have regular-sized plastic cups at the bar (you can see them from where you sit) that are roughly the same size as the ones you get downstairs in actual glasses. Finally came back to try the dinner because of their Monday night half off the entire menu all night special. To start, we had the pork/veal meatballs. These were AMAZING. I think they might even be the best meatballs I've had in Hoboken. It came with a perfectly grilled/toasted piece of bread that was perfect for sopping up all the sauce. Next, we ordered four crostinis. We thought they would be small, but this really came out to eight pieces. We had the Steak (goat cheese, chimichurri), two of the Wild Mushroom (pesto, burrata) and Ricotta (honey, truffle oil, pine nuts). All of the toppings were good, but the bread was not. It was a thick piece of bread that wasn't even toasted. It felt more like a little sandwich than a crostini. I wish they used the bread from the meatballs instead. My favorite was the ricotta, which I did not expect to like as much as I did. For the entree, I went with the Sweet Sausage Pizza (broccoli rabe, red onions, garlic olive oil, chili flakes, mozzarella). This was very meh. The crust was too thick and chewy for my liking. So it seems like anything that involves bread, isn't too great. But I definitely don't mind coming back to try some of their pastas and apps (and of course the pork/veal meatballs) Tip - only catch to half off Mondays is that they automatically include a 20% gratuity pre-discount to your bill. A little underwhelming. Food - we ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and the grilled Skirt steak & eggs. I liked the grilled chicken sandwich, only downside was that the chicken was a little burnt. It came with a large side of fries. The grilled Skirt steak was over cooked so it was hard fo eat. Drinks - I was so excited about the $4 brunch cocktails (mimosas, Bellinis, bloody Mary's) but my Bellini literally just tasted like juice. You can't convince me that there was any alcohol in it. I decided to order one of the signature brunch cocktails after that ($10). I originally ordered the Sunday Runner (I can't resist a rum drink) but they said they were out? Bummer. I settled for the City Mosa, which was fine. Service - our server was very sweet and checked on us throughout the meal. First time at City Bistro. I went for brunch. It was 4 people so we ordered a little of everything. I had the wings and a salad both were good and everyone else said their dishes were good such a the avocado toast and their was another dish with shrimp all in all everyone was please with the food. The drinks were ok. What the don't tell you is that when you are on the rooftop some drink aren't available so there is a separate drink menu downstairs which I didn't like because I was limited also the stairs is a bit much so they should definitely have accommodations if you want to order something from the other menu.They also have this cute back drop of sunflowers picture worthy. read more

For context, we were a party of 10 that made a reservation looking for a nice brunch. Unfortunately there aren't many nice things to say about City Bistro other than the rooftop is a nice space. However there's no view of anything due to the plants they've put in. Poor landscaping design that gives a claustrophobic feel. The $10 Bloody Mary/Mimosa/Bellini special was pre-mixed alcohol included (so no alcohol choice) and served in 7oz cups. They were also all warm because they were pre made, alcohol included, sitting in pitchers on the bar top. You could see the mimosa starting to separate from the heat. At one point we just ordered a bottle of orange juice, a bottle of champagne (the only bottle they had in the restaurant) and a bucket of ice to our table because we wanted cold drinks. Both beers I ordered needed to be taken back to the bar (myself) because they were warm by the time they made it to the table. The food was beyond extremely disappointing and the biggest reason why we'll never be going back. The "Brisket Burger" was ground beef and had zero brisket. When she asked how I'd like the meat cooked it sent up a red flag because brisket is either cooked or not cooked. I said this to her and she responded "medium rare is my favorite". I'm also still waiting on my extra cup of ketchup... The avocado toast was so hard you could have chipped a tooth, however the bread was warm. The "frittata" (if you can call it that) was an omelette dumped into a bowl with two rock hard, yet cold, slices of bread. The potato's on the side were also half cooked and swimming in oil. The chicken sandwich's chicken was pounded so thin there were sections of only breading holding the sandwich together. The sweet potatoes fries were all one big mush pile that couldn't even hold their shape being dipped into ketchup. The Chicken Caesar salad was still soaking wet from the lettuce being washed to the point there was water dripping off the plate as it was being delivered to our table. The caesar "dressing on the side" also didn't make it to our table until she came back to ask "how are things?". Only then, and after a reminder, did we get the dressing. Speaking of wait staff... They were beyond slow. It's a good thing they don't enforce their own 1.5 hour limit because it took us over an hour after we ordered to receive our food. It's as if she knew that she had the 20% tip baked in to our party larger than 6 because she barely gave us the time of day. We'd also have to ask her multiple times for the same thing because she'd return with none or only half our drink orders. I give her credit though because she didn't make excuses. She just gave us an "oh yeah!" kind of look and went to get it (still at a snails pace). I counted because I'm like that... she was helping 2 other tables at the time she was helping us. All in all, if you're going for a place to just booze, you can do worse. Just don't sit on the rooftop as it appears to be on the restaurant's back burner. However, if you do decide to come here you most certainly won't run into any of our party of 10. City Bistro has been taken off all of our and soon-to-be everyone we know in the Hoboken/JC area's radar. No one got sick so it gets 2/5 and not one star purely for that reason. I went with the grilled skirt steak and my girlfriend had the prosciutto and arugula pizza. The skirt steak was okay, and came with a lot of potatoes, carrots and a good amount of chimichurri sauce on top. The pizza was way too salty and difficult to eat. The crust is also hard and dense. I remember they had some short rib on the menu a couple of years ago and it was great. Hopefully they'll bring that back. For now, this is strictly a drinking bar. read more

This used to be my go to (especially on 1/2 off Monday nights), but with the most recent menu change, I really can't see myself coming for food all that much anymore. The menu has completed changed from American fare (ribs, steaks, sandwiches, tacos) to Italian options (think salads, meatballs, pizzas, pastas) as if this town doesn't have enough Italian options already. I get that a more limited menu is easier for the kitchen to handle, but I miss the standard new American feel of the food options! Luckily this is still a go to during warmer weather months for the outdoor roof area - I just wish they would prohibit guests from smoking on the roof too. He forgot about our drinks and didn't get them to us until after our food was served way later? He also got our drinks orders wrong thinking we ordered an extra drink and one of us ordered sweetened iced tea, because he specifically asked "would you like it sweetened or unsweetened", but gave her an unsweetened iced tea with sugar packs to sweeten it herself. That's not an issue but why did he ask if she wanted it sweetened then rather than just letting her know in advance that the iced teas all come unsweetened and we have to use sugar packs? He also seemed very clueless about the menu because he couldn't answer any of the questions we asked. We also had to ask for water MULTIPLE times and the place wasn't busy. My friends' toasts came out burnt but by then we were already kind of tired with the service we were getting so they just didn't eat it instead of asking for new ones. After most of us were done they cleaned our table and just left us hanging for a good 10 minutes. We were wondering why they weren't giving us the bill when they already cleaned our entire table then one of them came over asking how we were? That's when we finally asked for the bill. Went to City Bistro for brunch with a couple of friends on a Saturday afternoon. This place definitely hit all of the expectations for ambiance and location. With a rooftop bar that serves drinks while you watch over Hoboken to the outdoor seating in front of the restaurant, this place is extremely cute and feels "brunchy" There is no bottomless brunch here so be mindful that you pay for each drink but at 4$ for mimosas, Bellinis and bloodys it's not too bad. The quality of these drinks though drastically varies between the rooftop bar and the dining room bar. On the rooftop drinks are extremely watered down and little care is taken into how they taste. The bloody Mary tasted like slightly spicy ocean water and the mimosas barely had orange flavor (which could be a perk to some champagne lovers). Downstairs though, the drinks are the same price but no longer served in plastic cups and taste much better. Good balances between all flavors. The food was also very good but definitely came in at a steep price point. For 12 dollars I would expect more from avocado toast (10dollars for toast 2 extra for adding an egg) and 2 pieces of French toast for 10 dollars is a bit better of a deal for all of the fruit that came with it but still a bit steep. A big downside of this restaurant is the host that works at this time. He seemed more preoccupied with his phone than helping customers. I asked about my table once and he basically said he didn't have us on the list properly (after waiting 20 minutes) and then a second time (30 more minutes) he said he had called us but the phone was off, which was untrue. We were gifted a GC to use here and we're pretty excited about trying it out. Our first attempt at eating here was in the winter time. We were greeted by a sign on the door saying it was closed due to poor staffing. We ended up at the Madison instead - great spot. The chicken sandwich felt plain and like it was missing something... a spice, sun dried tomatoes... something. The f'rose was actually pretty good - our second choice after they told us the frozen aperol spritz had melted. Our server was nice but overall spoke less than 20 words to us. Her stops at our table were far and few between. Could have been busy but she wasn't tending to her other tables either. We waited for our food for an above average length of time. We asked our server if everything was okay and she said they were getting bombarded with orders from the top deck. After eating, we actually waited 30-40 minutes for our check and to have our gift card processed. Some of the other customers sitting around us had also been waiting awhile and made commentary about how long we were waiting. We were polite though. After the first 25 painful minutes of being patient, we walked up to the host and asked if she could process our gift card and she said she would try but didn't know how. We finally found our server and she asked her and another server but also no luck. The hostess took a picture of the gift card information on her personal phone (you planning on using that? it's cool if you are - just let us know though.) They eventually tried to get the manager to help but after a total of 15 minutes just took a picture of our gift card and told us they would be processing it with a credit card fee (because she manually chose to input that amount, not because we were assessed a credit card fee within the system.) I called her out on it for the principle of it, and she rolled her eyes so I took the L and walked away. Not once did we get an apology or acknowledgement of the poor service we were put through. A little respect can go a long way. We don't ask for much. No chance we'd come back if we didn't have a gift card balance left here. read more

Terrible experience! They ruined a girls bday and manager Jose couldn't care less! Wouldn't even give a star! We wanted to celebrate a gathering for a 16 y/o and eight of her friends. We called several times, and they don't take reservations. We were waiting since 3 pm. (They said they opened the rooftop at 4, and they didn't mention that when we called.) Close to 4, we approached the hostess, and then the manager showed up and said it's been reserved (they don't take reservations). He just didn't want to. The event was at 7. He could easily accommodate us for an hour top. Incredible rude, I told him we were coming from 30 min away, wait for an hour, and nobody said anything about the rooftop being reserved. Hope they lose a lot of business for their lack of empathy and unfairness. He just didn't have these teens as they wouldn't consume hard liquor. This was racist and discriminatory.
