I have super fond memories of going to city cafe after nights out in college and I hate to say it's just not the same, what were huge delicious sandwiches are pretty average these days. I suppose hoping the modern version was foolish and never going to live up to nostalgia. But after getting back to my hotel I'm pretty disappointed. The final straw however was asking for ranch when I ordered only to get back to our room to realize not only do we not have ranch, but no ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard salt pepper plasticware or napkins. A great place to eat for our family with so many different dietary needs. We were able to download the extensive menu before arriving. Otherwise, we would have been reading for many minutes trying to decide. Three of us decided on a create your own omelet and the fourth chose a breakfast off the menu. Typical diner: get them in, take orders, feed them, and send them on the way. Service was ok and prompt. Everyone seemed really busy even though there weren't many in the diner at 8:45 on a Monday morning. Portions were beyond huge. Two of us requested take-out boxes. Not an eating establishment for lingering although we certainly could have stayed a bit to have one of the many desserts if we hadn't been full. Our server is the only highlight of this meal. The gravy was watery and looked congealed. You can tell that this place works from all frozen food. The pancakes we frost burned on the side and not warm in the middle. While the desserts looked good, you couldn't talk how long they had been there. This would not even be a place I would go after a night out for a midnight snack. It was cramped with people that it seemed like people were standing over your table waiting for you to leave. Stopped here after visiting the bookstore across the street. We were promptly seated and got down to business looking at their enormous menu. Not before we walked past their huge display of desserts. They all looked amazing and rich. After going through the many pages of the menu we ordered and luckily didn't have a long time to wait for our food. The good came out piping hot and huge portions. Honestly we could've shared a meal. I had the chicken quesadilla which included extra sides including salsa which I love dipping my quesadilla in. My dad has cheesecake which was dense and pretty good but I wished that the topping was less artificial. The strawberries were good but the sauce seemed too sugary. Prompt service and a clean restaurant. Parking is ok as it's attached to a hotel. Was pretty busy while we were there but not a long wait. Not a bad place to get a meal. read more

So good we ended up at another location. Our vacation took an odd turn and we had to change where we were staying- which was 3 minutes from this location! Late night dinner and dessert- yes please! And they were packed! Again- the diner is attached to a hotel, and the hotels were booked solid in the area. So we had to park on the side of the hotel- the lot was full! We were sat right away- but service was slower, thanks to how busy they were. We sat somewhere near the phone- because it rang the entire hour and half we were there! I ordered meatball parmesan sandwich and John got pastrami on rye. I had tried to talk him into splitting a sandwich because I know I just don't finish my meals- but he was insistent that he was really hungry and wanted his own plate. BUT- he wanted cake too and we browsed the cake menu over and over throughout the entire time we were there. I was laughing at how many different chocolate cakes they had! Death by chocolate, New York blackout cake, midnight cravings, seven sins cake, million dollar cake.... just insanity. So- MR. I'm so hungry I need my own sandwich- yeah, he filled up and told me to yell at him next time (which won't work, but I'll keep trying). We got the New York Blackout cake to go- because there was no eating anything else. We asked for 2 sets of utensils and a couple of togo cups- because we were in a hotel room and actually had milk in the fridge- but no cups. The server, who was way too busy, only put on set of utensils in the bag and no cups. We probably could have been done and out the door in 30 minutes- but with the crazy busy night- we were there for much longer than I wanted. Great food at a fair price. I have eaten here a few times over the years and I guess I have never got around to doing a Yelp review. My wife and I were in the mood for a big Sunday breakfast. We were greeted and seated right away. I ordered 2 sunny side eggs over corn beef hash, toast, home fries, and coffee. My wife ordered 2 eggs, home fries, bagel, and pork chop. All arrived shortly thereafter. Freshly prepared and enormous portions. My corn beef hash was a little salty but otherwise it was a good hearty meal. I couldn't finish because of the portion size. I tasted my wife's pork chop and it was quite tasty and tender. My wife couldn't finish her plate either. Overall, service was good and the staff polite. We ate at the downtown location a few times when we moved here but never this location, even though we live in Ooltewah. We went all of 2014 without a City Cafe meal and decided yesterday that we missed it. I had the fried catfish and have never seen catfish fillets as big as I got. Before taking a bite, I figured it couldn't be catfish-somehow it was though. I chose the seafood bisque to go with my meal and it was excellent. If loving City Cafe Diner is wrong, then I don't wanna be right, y'all. I'm weirdly a big diner fan. I married a New Yorker, and frankly he doesn't get it, because diners are literally everywhere up there, and most Yankees think of it as "meh" food. But they aren't common down south, and truthfully I guess I've always been spoiled, because City Cafe is a cut above most of the NY and PA diners I've visited, where some dishes can be hit or miss. Despite offering a menu the size of a chapter book, as most diners do, I've never had a bad or disappointing thing here - and I used to frequent the downtown location quite a bit, back in my high school days. We're Chattanoogans again now (just moved back after 12 years in Nashville), and our new house is 5 mins from this location. Danger zone. I was stoked to try it out last Saturday, visions of mile high cakes and corned beef hash danced in my head. The Lee Hwy location is clearly newer and quite a bit nicer in terms of decor and cleanliness. Same friendly service I'm used to, and their food is just as delicious as ever. my husband had his yearly review with VA on Shallowford, we decided to go to City Cafe Lee Hwy. I'm on a Walker, we had to go around the stairs to get to ramp, that was just when it got worse. Entered restaurant it took 15 minutes for them to decide where they would seat us. They were not busy until later. Server took immediate dislike to me??? My husband ordered wings which were hard as a brick. i wanted steak, baked potato, and steamed veggies, she kept trying to get me to order the Sirloin $24.95, I declined. The steak was full of grizzle and fat, was supposed to be medium, was charred black, $16.95, the veggies were poured from bag and hot water run over them, hard as a rock, not eatable. she gave me 1/2 glass of water with one cube of ice, she got mad when I asked for full ice and water. $50.95 don't go there no service and bad food. read more

We stayed at the hotel that contains this restaurant. We actually picked the hotel without even considering the restaurant. When we checked in, they said show your room key at the restaurant and get 10% off. We liked it so well, we had dinner and breakfast. To say the menu was extensive is to make an understatement. I don't think there was one item that wasn't on the menu. Something for everyone. Everything we ordered was awesome and the waitstaff was attentive. I noticed most of the patrons were local and that bodes well. Definitely give this place a chance I think you'll not regret it.
