City Garage price gouging for un-needed repair.... Took Toyota Camry in for air conditioning inspection regarding new squeaking sound in the engine (appointment on July 29, 2015). After inspection, City Garage calls to tell me I need to replace the entire air conditioning compressor and the price quote is $1,439.84 + tax ($1,558.62). City Garage wants me to authorize the work. I say that I would like a second opinion. The City Garage employee says "You don't need a second opinion. You need a new a/c compressor." City Garage charged me $110 + tax ($111.62) for one hour of "work" when I picked up the car to take it to another mechanic for a second opinion. Be aware that the City Garage labor rate is very high ($110 per hour). I went online and saw that most auto repair shops charge about $800 - $1,000 for the Toyota Camry a/c compressor and install. I find yourmechanic.com and get a hard quote for $856.11 for the exact same a/c compressor installation. Booked the yourmechanic.com service online - they come to my house at a time that I chose. The yourmechanic.com shows up a few minutes early (very promptly). Inspects the air conditioning system and says "What makes you think you need a new air compressor?" I tell him that City Garage said I needed a new compressor. He tells me that I do not need a new a/c compressor. He tells me that Toyota a/c compressors are built solid and wear well. He says, "You have a squeaky belt on your alternator". He replaces the belt for $72.95. Problem fixed. The yourmechanic.com mechanic inspects the rest of the Toyota Camry, makes some suggestions, and sends me immediate written quotes for each suggestion. No high pressure selling tactics. The yourmechanic.com mechanic says you can decide later and book anything you want to do at your convenience. I will be using yourmechanic.com from now on. You schedule yourmechanic.com and they come to your house to make the repairs. Run, do not walk, away from City Garage. City Garage quoted me $1,558.62 for work I did not need done, when a yourmechanic.com mechanic fixed the issue for $72.95. read more

Was quoted $1200 to change spark plugs and radiator hoses. Once they realized I was smart enough not to allow them to rip me off they got a bit agitated. Later that day, I went down the street to Carrollton Complete Auto and was quoted $700 for same services...the choice was an obvious one. I have brought my cars to City Garage in Plano for many years. When it comes to car repair, my number one criteria is honesty. And these guys are honest. I have been told more than once that 'you don't really need that' when it comes to suggested repairs or maintenance. They could have easily done extra repairs/maintenance and charged me for it and I would be none the wiser. The guys performed a 34 point inspection done on my truck and told me the truck check out perfect and my water pump was not making any noise or leak , he recommended that I didn't need anything done at the moment. First tried City Garage this summer for an oil/filter change. They had a coupon online that brought a full-synthetic Valvoline oil change to $39.99, which is very good for anywhere in Collin County. I made an appointment the day before to bring my car in the next day after work. I arrived about 8 minutes before my 4:30PM appointment, but that didn't seem to be a problem. After entering my information into their system, they immediately took my car in. The lounge was undergoing remodeling, but was still very clean and well-lit. My car was done around 4:50PM and I signed and paid for my oil change. The staff event went as far as to update my maintenance reminder on my car's onboard navigation system. One thing I really like about this place is that they don't lie. Anyone who knows anything about vehicles these days know that modern-day oil AND engine technology allows vehicles to go longer on oil changes. In fact, most owners manuals now state about 5,000-10,000 mile oil change intervals, depending on vehicle and use. Despite this, many places such as NTB, Meineke, and Midas tend to stick with the clearly outdated 3,000 mile oil change. DON'T FALL FOR IT. City Garage was honest and put a 7,500 mile oil change sticker on my car, which is what I planned on doing anyways. read more

I wanted spark plugs changed on my V6 and was given an estimate of $358. Each plug costs about $15, $268 for labor is just ridiculous! I wanted to test their honesty on the cabin-air-filter and they gave me an estimate of $47. Enough said I guess. Dishonest shop, VERY bad time-wise, and incompetent mechanics. Inflates reviews on here by offering $100 service credit prize drawings in exchange for reviews. I regret giving them my email given how much "please review" emails I got. I've visited here twice and both times I regretted it. The first time was a simple oil change and it took them the entire day to do it (I dropped it off first thing in the morning and they didn't have it finished until the afternoon). The second time was a 4 day complete disaster. I came in to get a timing belt changed out because they were fairly low cost. You get what you pay for... I brought it in in first thing in the morning and they told they'd get it done that day. After I leave and head home they call me and tell me they were wrong and won't get done until noon the following day. At that point I didn't have a car to get back so I was stuck. They didn't even get around to it on time the following day and it was delayed again until the afternoon. Their excuse for the delays was that they broke something else when changing the timing belt - they kept changing their story a couple times so I'm not sure what, if anything, was actually broken. My wife picks up the car and the engine is making a TON of noise because they overtensioned the timing belt. Any good mechanic should have NEVER sent my wife home with the car. Should that timing belt have snapped due to the overtensioning it could have caused serious damage to the engine. I now wait until Monday to return since they're closed on Sunday. I take the car in (day 4 now) first thing in the morning Monday. The shop owner was working the desk and tells me they'll try to get it done by the end of the day but it might be a fifth day. I had to argue with him for a long time just to get him to put me up at the front of the line since I wasn't willing to wait at this point. What's worse was the shop owner (Patrick) kept changing his story as to the excuses for why the delays were happening. Another thing to note is the shop plays favorites. While sitting there on day 4 I got to see multiple customers come in, often for simple oil changes. The new customers were always told end of the day, whereas I saw two people come in that the shop owner recognized. Those people both jumped to the front of the line. If you're a new customer, do yourself a favor and don't come here. The timing belt was fixed eventually, but I regret coming here to save myself $100. I ended up having to pick up a rental car since the 4 hour job turned into a 4 day job due to their scheduling delays and incompetent mechanics all while putting my engine at serious risk since they incorrectly did the job. TLDR: Avoid this shop at all costs unless you like leaving your car all day in the hands of incompetent mechanics. They also inflate their reviews by offering $100 prize drawings. read more

Bait and switch place. They "misled" when I first enquired about the cost (over phone) and when they actually told me after dropping off the car. Front office guy confirmed on phone that AC checks "includes evacuation and re-charge" based on that I decided to take my car to "City Garage in Plano on Independence". After dropping off the car, they told "evacuation and re-charge is extra" when it was big hassle and additional cost for me to change the mechanic. Ripped off by approx. $200. They were able to get me a ride to my other vehicle while they figured out why my car was overheating and smoking. They were able to get repairs done next day and no surprise pricing! Clean, friendly, not intimidating; I definitely trust these mechanics, they don't fix what isn't in need of fixing (i.e., they don't recommend unnecessary repairs).This is where my husband and I always take our cars. Downside is that they want to keep the car all day, which is a problem if you don't have someone to pick you up. I understand why, as it lets them work on it when they can. I've never had them keep it longer than they said unless a part had to be ordered. I only had to take the car back once for a repair that was not done properly (the mechanic didn't tighten the belts enough after replacing them), and it was fixed immediately. If things are going to take a while they will let you know and keep you in the loop. Prices on some parts seem a bit high, but a lot of that may just be my being used to buying the parts directly. I've never been to City Garage before, but I wanted to sell my 02 Accord to a friend and City Garage is her main place to fix her car, so she wanted my car checked out before she decides to buy my car or not. I take care of my car pretty well, but its 10 years old, so normal wear and tear. The mechanic found some problems with my car fluid and "steering rack" with a pump that comes with it and when I heard the steering rack with the pump along with it cost 1k i knew something was fishy no way it could be that high. I have certified mechanic friends and I looked up online and the price for even a new steering rack along with the pump is less than 700, so City Garage is way off and ripping off their customers. I asked them about "testing out my battery" and he say $40 bucks, people don't be stupid go to AutoZone its freaking free just to check out your batter don't waste $40. The service is super friendly, but their prices are so high and for a normal Joe or Jane, they assumed they getting "quality repairs and prices" from City Garage, but you gotta be careful or you will be overcharge by $300. I rather go to Firestone to get my car fix or better yet go to Christian Brothers Automative these guys will be 100% with you about the prices and what's "really" wrong with your car. read more

So I took my car to City Garage in Plano for a simple oil change! I took my own oil and they stated that was fine. I took them a 5 qt jug of oil and my Honda Insight only takes 3.4 Gal of oil. The over filled it about 1 qt. The issue is if they would have done their job and check the oil after completing and realized they over filled it. The stated they checked it, but it was still about 1 qt over full. I questioned this when I got what was left and there was only about 1/2 qt left. If you checked the oil after completing the job, how is it still 1 qt over full??? So then I take it back and they drained some of it out - and they stated all is good now, is right on (according to his words). I now check it and it is 1/2 qt low. They stated they checked it and double checked it! But some how it is still 1/2 qt low. If you can't be trusted with little, you can't be trusted with much! Have some integrity and do your job - that is what your paid to do rather than get an attitude because you had to do something over! I won't be going back!!! read more

After 10+ years of having Park Place Lexus serviced my cars, I ventured in trying an independent shop for a rear brake service on my wife's RX. With good reviews and being near my home, I went to City Garage Plano, but not until I have spoken with Graham and Denisha on 2 occasions during my due diligence. I was told both times that they only use OEM equivalent parts and warrant their work. Job was done in 2.5 hours and cost $262 with new pads and resurfaced rotors. I went home pleased, which unfortunately, was very short lived though. The next morning while backing out, the car now emanates a super loud high pitch squeak. After a few days, the squeak continued so brought the car back. Their diagnosis is that the brakes are glazing. They sprayed some chemical to fix the glazing, and was reassured that they will replace the pads under warranty should it continue to squeak. The spray didn't work. Brought the car back for a 3RD visit. Remember this is a simple rear brake job. Now, they are saying they will replace the pads under warranty, but the rotors will also need to be replaced, which will cost $250, which I declined. So after spending $262 and over 5 hours of wasted precious time for the 3 visits, I am left with a botched brake job. I brought the car to Park Place Lexus, who said the pads installed were too big and don't match the OEM specs of the car. Park Place had to re-do the job + resurfacing the rotors (note resurface not replace as City Garage wanted to do). Park Place maybe a bit more expensive but my horrible experience with City Garage taught me that it is money well spent. It is very convenient because all I need to do is drop off the car and drive out with a new loaner car that comes with free tolls and gas, Once the job is done, I return the loaner and drive off with my car already cleaned and washed. No wasted precious time and more importantly fully assured I won't get screwed! read more

This is the second time I have taken my Corvette in to City Garage. Both times have been good experiences. The mechanics are efficient, found the problem quickly and made the repairs. They didn't try to sell me a full brake package when all that was wrong was a loose bolt. This is the kind of neighborhood garage I have been looking for. PS I didn't get anything (no $100 kick back) for writing this review, and the manager is not by brother. I have used City Garage several times and they have always proven themselves honest and trustworthy. Last year I took my car to them after being told by another garage that it needed over 1500 in repairs to the car's steering system - said the tie rods were about to fall off. I had taken it in for an alighment after purchasing new tires. WRONG!! City Garage looked at them and yes, there were some repairs needed but the rods were not about to fall off and the repairs were under 500. Last week I took my son's 1999 truck to have the steering checked. Their assessment? Yes, they could do about 400 worth of work but didn't think it would really help the play in the steering and based on the age of the truck, they didn't feel it would be money well spent. REALLY??? WHEN has a mechanic told you that while things could be done, and they'd be happy to do them but they weren't really necessary. His comment? If it was my truck, I wouldn't spend it. The truck runs fine, it is safe, they tightened a few things and the steering feels much better. We did have them replace the door handle and do an oil change...and were out the door for about $170. My son had questioned why I was driving all the way to this particular shop - about 40 minutes from our home - he understands now. Finding an honest mechanic? Priceless. read more

This is a very detailed and lengthy review of my experience, but if you want specifics this is the review to read. Alright so my car has been leaking fluid for a while and I finally got the time to take it to the shop. This place seemed nice, I got referred here and read some reviews so I thought it would be worth a shot. I get my car over to the shop with my girlfriend accompanying me, and they charge the usual $60 "diagnostic fee" I know almost every shop does this (even though diagnostics are almost never worth that much) so I don't think much of it. I wait 4 hours or so to get a call back to be informed it would cost many hundreds more than they or any other shops had quoted me, not even the same ballpark. They also inform me that my tires are close to the end of their lifespan and say they just had to air up one of them. Now with the first issue, I've had this same part leak before and a family member had fixed it in under an hour. Although it did end up leaking again, it lasted me years and costed under $100. By this point I call right back and tell them I'm coming for the car, they don't seem surprised, the price was truly ridiculous. When I get there I go inside, pay for the diagnostic and walk out, happy to know I have a better quote a fraction of the price at another shop. When I get around to my car, a tire is completely flat. They claimed I did it on the way over, neglecting to say that they could have even possibly been at fault. After some looking it's discovered to be a nail straight through the center of the tread, normally an easy plug. They tell me they can't plug it, that all they can do is air it up or put on a spare. I ask for just a fill up on air so I can make it to the other shop. While they pump it full, they admit that the cost was high, but that it was because of the higher quality parts they used, and told me that my other quote was extremely low and that the shop I was going to was going to give me cheap parts at that price. I leave and huff it straight to the other shop, where I asked for an opinion on city garages quote for me. The guy was dumbfounded at the price, saying that was a blatant ripoff. I then ask what brand parts they would use for my repair, just to see, and sure enough it's the same "high quality" parts City Garage claimed to use. I'm almost certain that outragous price was given due to our age and the fact that we were new clients, and that, quite frankly, is something friendly attitude can't fix. read more
