I enjoy generic breakfast. But for some reason, a good 'generic' breakfast, for me at least, is really hard to find. Excessive grease, soggy bread, etc. I can go on for a minute. CJ's comes through for me. I base my breakfast's 'goodness' off of my bacon. Yes my bacon. If it's flimsy I stare at the rest of my food as if it was all equally prepared. So naturally, I observe that the bacon is crispy and realize the rest of my food looks as if it will compliment it well. And boy do they. Like I said, I like everything generic, so I can mix my food a little bit. Dab my English Muffin in my over-easy eggs, and let the yolk run into my potatoes, humbling the flavor of the grilled onions that were tossed on the 'taters. Prompt, friendly service accompanies the meal, with servers who are on their game. Every time I'm there I'm greeted with a smile, and I leave with an ever bigger one. These people are on their game! It always seems to be packed, but I usually find a spot immediately. The prices are good, and I have yet to try the rest of their stuff, and based on the bacon and eggs I order every time, I'm going to assume most if not everything on the menu is pretty good. Sometimes ya just need a cheapy breakfast or a cheapy burger or 2 fried pork chops, some grits, scrambled eggs and an English muffin for around $6. On other days, maybe some goat stew sounds good, or maybe a burrito with tongue or some carne asada is what has your tummy yelling at you for it's fix. On any of those days, I highly recommend CJ's. It's no 8th culinary wonder of the world, but it is a fine example of a diner-esque love child made of soul food, mexican, breakfast and beyond. This is a very cute little, homey cafe that we stumbled upon one afternoon while early for an appointment. We were just looking for a place to wait and maybe a cup of coffee. Mid-afternoon and the place was empty but the employees were busily cleaning - and it shows. This place is clean as a whistle. Impressive. Even though we weren't hungry, we perused the menu and special boards scattered throughout the restaurant. Everything looked delicious. We decided to get some chips and salsa with our coffee and both were fresh and tasty. I'm really looking forward to going back to CJ's and having a meal. The menu combines two of my favorite types of food -- Mexican and southern food. And the service couldn't have been more efficient or friendly. It was Sunday morning before church and had to find a breakfast spot, quick! So around this neighborhood we found CJ's. This place was packed and we were able to get our seats right away. What's ordered: - Waffle 3pc. special (chicken wings). I opted not to go with eggs so that made it a dollar cheaper. The waffle was ok. They were soft and fluffy, maple syrup on these is a must. I was disappointed on the fried chicken, they weren't as tasty as it looked, it was crispy but not seasoned, it was bland. Again, maple syrup for flavor. - Chilaquiles con Huevos. Tortilla chips fried w/red sauce, topped with eggs, Mexican cream, onions, and cheese. Served with rice, beans and tortillas. This was a good choice. It was made tasty and it was Chilaquiles simplified. Friendly service here. Also we got our orders quick! I could tell this is were the locals go. CJ's burger sucks. I realized that CJ's is a breakfast joint, but I had breakfast already and just couldn't do eggs again for lunch. I noticed that they served fresh squeeze juice, so I was really hopeful that the food would be fresh and tasty since they are rated high on Yelp. I'm not a big fan of fries cut like CJ's, but they were ok. Service was meh. I had to ask for mustard 3 times, and it took awhile for me to get my check. Oh, I noticed a waitress adjusting the pancakes on a plate with her hands. I don't care if she just washed her hand, she should wear gloves or use a utensil. If you're dining with a friend, I suggest you sit outside because it gets really LOUD inside. The breakfast food looks like standard diner food -nothing to get all excited unless you want grit, catfish -soul or Mexican breakfast food. Forget Toast and all those trendy so-so, long line hyped up places in the area. This is a gem I have been hiding from you for years. We literally go here EVERY weekend. It never gets boring, old, or tired. Huge menu, lots of options that never disappoint and the service and food is impressive. My top 2 items are the Huevos Rancheros "Tiana Style" and the Tuna Melt. Orange Pineapple smoothie is amazing and all their juices and fresh. As a early breakfast or a mid-day brunch or lunch CJ's never lets me down. The outside seating if the way to go. I prefer the seats facing Pico since you get more shade, great people watching and its just a personal preference. I've never sat inside. Ever. LA has great weather, why not enjoy it. Perfect meal pre-movies at the Grove on a weekend. Bring your dog and sit outside :) Free parking in back or plenty of street parking. The staff is friendly, fast, will accommodate any request and will remember you after a few visits and make you feel like family. There are several regulars and everyone is so friendly. The only time there is a wait is the after church crowd on Sundays around 11-12. PRICE! The two of us including drinks and meals always comes out under $20. Can;t beat that! read more

I go to CJ's every weekend-the food is the best of the best and very affordable, the people are amazing, and it cures hangovers. What else do you need in life? When my friends are visiting from out of town, I always make sure to bring them here. They ask me what is good and I tell them, everything! Let's see..the chicken wings are good, their bacon, their waffles, their mexican breakfast, their mac n cheese, their bacon avo cheeseburger, their chile verde burrito, their biscuits..yeah everything. This place is pretty good. It is a Mexican brunch diner spot. We came here on a Sunday morning and it was pretty busy. We waited around 15 minutes for a table for 2. I forget what I ordered, but it is pictured below. My bf got huevos rancheros. Both are similar in that they both include rice and beans. His came with churiso and mine came with eggs (sunny side up). It was pretty good and VERY filling. The portions are huge! I was so full I couldn't finish my food. The service was quick and we were in and out pretty quickly. They also offer American breakfast but I think they are more known for their Mexican brunch. I want to come back to try more of their brunch options. I feel like I didn't really get a variety of food having ordered two similar dishes. A brunch for two costed around $23. read more

During the weekends, whenever I go out for a morning stroll, there always seems to be a long line for CJ's and finally after my first visit I realized just why so many people flock to this fantastic cafe. CJ's offers a pretty diverse selection of items, from your traditional breakfast platters, stretching over to some Mexican favorites, as well as sandwiches, and even soul food. CJ's does have a private parking lot, which is fantastic, but if you're not lucky enough to find parking then there's plenty of street parking. The cafe itself is decently sized, although it can get extremely crammed. The staff is friendly, they're quick to serve, and most importantly the food is extremely delicious. During my visit my girlfriend and I were craving some good Mexican food, so my girlfriend ended up ordering a shrimp dish and I ordered a chili releno with egg platter. Although my girlfriend wasn't blown away with her selection, she still was satisfied with her meal. As for me, I personally thought that my selection was quite delicious. Trying roasted chilies for the first time was interesting and I'll surely try it again! The chilies were smothered in cheese, eggs and a red sauce that was either made from tomatoes or chilies. And to top things off the refried beans and rice was off the charts. Hands down some of the best beans and rice I ever had. The beans were creamy and perfectly seasoned and it melted in my mouth, and the rice was fluffy and flavorful. I only wish every other Mexican restaurant could make their rice and beans like they do at CJ's. The food at CJ's is reasonably priced, and portions are pretty large. Overall CJ's Cafe is an awesome dining spot for anyone who's looking for a great meal. But get here early because CJ's is not open late and lines begin to form pretty quickly. I have been eating at CJ's for so many years and sorry that it took so long to post this review. Since the pandemic my daughter orders from here using different delivery services. Their breakfast food is hardy and most yummy. Some restaurants even though in person their food is most delicious when you order through one of the popular delivery services and it arrives just does not taste the same. Not so with CJ's! It tastes just as scrumptious as in person altho we do pop the fantastic flavorful french toast in the toaster for a hot minute to crisp it up a little. Who knew? Walking distance from my house, I only *just* found CJ's. It's a diner joint in the neighborhood and serves all kinds of breakfasts, sandwiches, burgers, Mexican food, and a few soul food options. Go figure. I have some friends who swear by the Mexican food. But my friend got a chili omelette that was awesome. Basically it tastes like chili fries without the fries. My girl's corned beef hash was right outta the can, but good for what it was. The caldo de pollo was killer, and my two eggs and turkey sausage completely hit the spot. Pretty awesome greasy spoon, and right on pico. Update: stick with regular greasy spoon and Mexican fare. Don't go for the fried chicken. I have been coming here for years. It is my neighborhood breakfast joint. It isn't fancy & it gets really crowded on weekends. It is a mix crowd of family people, hipsters, gangsters, gays, straights, all ethnicities, my kind of place! They make the best pancakes really light & fluffy.
