Aug. 2023 we stopped in for lunch. It was not real busy mid afternoon. We ordered a Rueben on rye with French fries. Service was good but the sandwich was great. It was real corned beef not that package stuff. I have a hard time bitting through a lot of meat on sandwiches but not this one. The meat was so tender. The rye was a dark rye and very tasty. But the clincher was the fries were hot! We love hot French fries so we ate those first. Our server came by several times to check on us so I sure can't complain about service. Took a friend out for her birthday; only 2 in our party. My friend asked for no tomato on her hamburger and waitress came back and stated the cook said "No...you have to have it the way he makes it". Also took an hour to get our food. French fries were burnt and cold and the hamburger meat was red and raw looking. Utensils were dirty and restaurant appeared not clean. Restaurant was mostly empty; only 3 tables of customers and that includes our table. Will not return. read more

Most Manly Sandwich Ever Created By A Woman was rather tall. They stick two onion rings inside the sandwich so you can't possibly get it all in your mouth. The brisket on the sandwich wasn't that great. I'm not sure it was house smoked. The slaw and sauce are amazing though. They put enough sauce on it that you can dip your fries in it as well. It has a good kick but not too hot. 3.5 Stars California burger was good. It comes with two prawns on the top which don't really go with the burger at all, but I will never turn away extra prawns. It needs a signature sauce to go with it, the pico isn't enough. 4 Stars The restaurant has an unobstructed view of the bay which is gorgeous at sunset. You can't get a better view! Service was fine. Food was great. I had the beer battered prawn and cod with fries. Pretty tasty and was fresh. My husband had the Caesar salad, and to our surprise, adding chicken was an additional $10.95. Wowza. The simple chicken Caesar ended up being a $24 salad. Oh well. Our fault for not taking a closer look at the menu. That's pretty much our only complaint. My kids said they had the best chicken tenders, and they're picky about their chicken tenders lol. Everything else was great, especially the service. Awesome that they let us bring our dog on the patio to dine with us. Service was very nice but really slow. $62 for two orders of fish and chips, two beers and tip. Service was just ok. Saturday early afternoon and the first few things we ordered were not in stock. The main thing about this place that blows my mind is that the kitchen will not allow ANY changes. I'm not talking high maintenance stuff like trying to completely change their menu. I'm talking asking them to not sprinkle bacon on the Caesar salad. Server said the kitchen would refuse. My friend hates coleslaw and asked to exclude it from his plate. NOPE! Server said kitchen can't do that. I understand no substitutions to a certain extent- but no exclusions? The main thing going for this restaurant is its proximity to the bay and a spacious deck area (though we ate inside, we could still enjoy the view). Our waitress was attentive and personable. There were a fair bit of older ladies enjoying lunch inside as well. I ordered a very delicious Mediterranean flatbread with zesty hummus, beats that made me realize I like beats, and flavorful red onions. The avocados were especially beautiful. Even my partner who does not like avocado admitted it was good. He ordered the "most manly sandwich ever made by a woman." Horrible service please allow me to give some examples. While waiting for a table we decided to sit in the bar. Our order was two Arnold Palmers and a tap beer. The bar tender explained no tap beer due to the fact she had no clean glasses. Said she could possibly make the A.P.'s We never were asked if we needed anything more from the bartender. When asked if we could transfer our drink ticket to our dinner service she stated that wasn't possible. When finally seated 45 minutes later we sat for 10 minutes then we were asked if f we needed to see a menu. After our orders arrived we were asked if we needed silverware or napkins. Great folks. Relatives came down to visit from Canada and we hung out all day and chatted. The staff was friendly and accommodating to allow us to visit for hours and didn't try to run us off!!! Around the corner from Semiahmoo, Birch Bay can seem on first blush like a rather downmarket beachfront community that is hoping for a 'bump' that will never come. Nonetheless, it as a certain comfortable appeal, as it lacks the frenetic trendiness of a LaConner or Langley. You can also find some real 'diamonds-in-the-rough' here, and CJ's Beach House is one of those... THE ROSES: The restaurant just exudes the right atmosphere! It fairly SCREAMS 'Beach Joint'! While it is well-maintained and clean, you can tell it is a lot older than it looks. Most of the tables have a superb view of Birch Bay. It turns out it is a roadhouse that dates back over a century, and was even once a bordello! I'm not saying it's haunted, but some of the staff suggest that earlier employees never left, ifyouknowwhatImean! We were here for breakfast, and while nothing was that fancy, they really shone in service and execution of their dishes; hearty, filling, and generous portions. Many items that lesser restaurants would simply get off a SYSCO truck are made from scratch here. THE THORNS: They either need to inspect their dishwasher or not fill it so full; much of our cutlery wasn't that clean; otherwise, a great job! TOP TIP: (to management): Add a 'Captain's Platter' of deep-fried seafood and chips to your menu; that's the one obvious hole in your offerings, and if you make it as good as you do everything else, I may well haunt you as surely as your other alleged resident ghosts! THE VERDICT: CJ's Beach House is a blue-collar roadhouse that is seriously punching well above its weight class; by all means check them out!! read more

Excellent fish and chips--crispy outside and seasoned well on the fish. The chips are deliciously seasoned thin fries-- perfectly fried.
