My friends and I came for the 35 dollar DineLA menu and we were impressed by the quality and quantity of food and service for the price. The atmosphere was dim with a romantic ambiance. A perfect place for a date. For the first course we got the salad and cheese bread and for the entree we got the petite filet with a huge baked potato and for dessert we got the key lime pie which we had to take to go since we were so stuffed. We came on a Wednesday afternoon. The service was a bit slow but that was because there were only 1-2 servers for the whole restaurant. Aside from that our server was super attentive and accommodating even though she was swamped with other tables. Everything was served table side. The salad was super fresh and I loved the blue cheese dressing as well as the house made ranch. The filet mignon was perfectly cooked and tender. The baked potato was huge and went well with all the sour cream, cheese, and chives. We were so full that we had to take dessert home. I was a bit concerned when my friend suggested this place as it looked a bit older on the outside, however walking closer to the door, I could smell something delicious. It was really dark but the holiday lights brightened it up nicely. This place has been around for a long time and I soon realized why. This was an old school steakhouse with reddish/brown interior with comfortable seating. The staff are formal in their presentation of food. I appreciated not having to think too much about sides to order as the signature cuts - rib eye includes a house salad, cabbage, baked potato and cheese bread. It was suggested to mix some cabbage with the salad which was excellent. The cheese bread was addicting. I was worried that I would be too full for the rib eye! The waiter set up the cart pouring vodka onto the steak to light it on fire to finish it off! Such a great presentation. I was impressed! I couldn't believe how perfect my steak was prepared - a perfect medium rare! It was delicious! Melted in my mouth so tender. I haven't had this good of a rib eye in a long time at a restaurant. The food at this restaurant is amazingly delicious. Everything I've ordered throughout the many years visiting have been the best. All entrees have been seasoned to perfection !. The shrimp on a skewer the steaks are made perfect and so fresh. the taste is special. The salads they serve have the best blue cheese ever . They are also famous for their pickled red cabbage salads. Lots of people I see stop by and order salad and cabbage to go. Its their special cabbage. their cheese bread is superb !! The baked potatoes are also a specialty of their's with great fillings to order. I love their cheese butter!! The fish, Grilled Halibut and Mahi-Mahi are fresh and tasteful. The hospitality and conversation she brings really brings the experience together. The dim lighting and good food make for a relaxing evening. Shirley has that personality that could draw you in even if you had dinner in the dining area you want to stop by the bar to grab a quick drink and conversation. What a deal! $40 a person, 3 course pre fixed menu, with bottomless mimosa, champagne, wine and fruit juice. Let me tell you, when they say bottomless, they really mean it! The interior reminds me of the Regal Beagle from Three's Company. This place is a literal time capsule. Very cool, medieval, rustic vibes. The cocktail lounge had live music. There was a fountain in the middle of the main dining room that reminded me of the Tiki Room at Disneyland. Albert was our server and he was awesome. All staff were friendly. Service was good, but did feel slightly understaffed for a busy Friday night. The food was tasty and plentiful. Seriously, come hungry. You get unlimited cheese breads which is like a Texas toast, delicious! Every protein selection comes with salad, red cabbage (which you add to the salad), several dressings come to the table in this tripod serving dish. Clearman's Steak 'n Stein looks like an old time steak house time warped from what we stereotypically expect from the end of the 19th century.  It's a comfortable cocoon.  "Tiffany" glass lamps, lots of red pleather, "oil paintings", one depicting a Renoir style lady possibly habitué of the demimonde. So dark it takes the eyes time to adjust from the midday sun. 1) Big portion of grilled cheddar cheese, butter, garlic bread is tasty goodness to accompany the salad that comes right after.  2) Caesar Salad: Hearts of Romaine, dressed in mostly creamy Italian dressing. Sprinkled with dry, machine julienned parmesan cheese. I thought the regular salad with lightly brined & pickled red cabbage to be more refreshing that was ordered by Super Yelper Isobel L. 3 kinds of salad dressing enough for 8 people! 3) Calamari Fritti: Huge pile of ethereally light crispy, crunchy, thin fried batter surrounds meaty, moist, slightly sweet rings of squid tasting of fresh, untainted oil. Good cocktail sauce & lemon added gastrique to counter the oil & carbs.   Just out of the fryer. Best Calamari Fritti in ages. Used the 3 salad dressings for more varied flavours. Hats off to the fry chef. A must get if seafood is your thing.  4) Jumbo Scallops: I asked if I could have half of them fried & half grilled. Fried won out for the same reason as the Calamari. An aromatic herb batter was a nice, subtle touch. Grilled was ok but lacked that kiss of sea sweetness and texture was a bit stiff.  4a) Ginormous baked russet potato is squished, fluffed, cut, & opened so it can be stuffed with as many pats of butter as requested. Condiments of chopped green onion-cucumber mix; warm, cheddar, puréed vegetal sauce; thick sour cream.  I saved this to be eaten the next day converting it to a cold Vichyssoise soup for summer since the bread, salad, Calamari stuffed me up like the baked potato. I didn't need the side of clarified butter either that was included.  5) Rum Chocolate Sundae had two scoops of average vanilla ice cream, slug of Hershey's choco syrup, but the rum is a more neutral spirit that I couldn't taste it.   Perhaps bourbon with its toasty, vanilla, caramel, oaky, warm tones would have augmented better to the chocolate.  1-5) Standard iced tea which was constantly refilled by Alyssa who was spot on in her services...kind, thoughtful, attentive, efficient, unobtrusive.   Food here is done in mega quantities to show hospitality & generosity, but it also invites food waste in a world where many have food insecurity as well as inviting our waistlines to ever increasing horizons. Perhaps a quality not quantity philosophy would help us maintain better health.  Excellent Calamari & fried Scallops were the highlights. The high calorie & cholesterol levels of this meal remind me that it is for only very rare occasions.  4- stars read more

To start off, I normally go to Clearman's Northwoods Inn so I decided to change it up and try Steak N Stein. The menu differs from Northwoods and catered to my liking more. The menu at Northwoods has more sandwiches and handhelds compared to Steak N Stein that had primarily steak/seafood entrees which gave more steak options in a more affordable price range in my opinion. My fiance and I came here to celebrate his birthday. Our reservation was at 7:15pm, we checked in at 7:09pm, seated at 7:25pm. The entry way was full of people and unfortunately we were seated roughly around the time where parties of 8+ were being seated too, which definitely played into the part of our service for the rest of the visit. The ambiance here felt the same compared to Northwoods. It's dimly lit and had an intimate feeling, but definitely loud when the restaurant is packed. My fiance ordered the Clearman's combo that came with steak brochette, scallops, and chicken. I ordered the 20oz boneless prime rib. Each entree comes with a massive baked potato and onion rings which differs to Northwoods' baked potato and rice. Before entrees, the salad, cabbage and bread was served. The salad and cabbage came out in smaller dishes than Northwoods; however, the salad came undressed. They give you three dressings for your salad that you can serve yourself on the table: bleu cheese, ranch, and house dressing. We didn't receive our entrees until about 8:30pm. All dishes served are on a cart that the wait staff comes with for table side service. My fiance's entree was on a mini grill that was lit before serving for the last minute char and our baked potatoes are prepared right then and there too. It was definitely cool to watch the fire and having our potatoes prepared table side. The food came out really delicious and the portions are generous. Our waiter, Miguel, was also very kind and attentive. We wanted to order dessert which looked amazing everytime a dessert passed by, but unfortunately we were on a time crunch and had to leave at a certain time. Overall, our visit here was pretty good. Live music on weekends (bar area), an intimate feeling, and generous portions would definitely best describe the whole night. My only downside was the wait time of our visit. I came here with reservations on a Wednesday night with my best friend for DineLA. We were seated immediately and given both the regular and DineLA menu. The place is dimly lit and it was kinda hard to read the menu but were able to get over that. We both ordered a lemon raspberry drop martini, which was very generous on the liquor and we enjoyed it. We each got the clearmans house salad, which came with the best cheese bread and yummy red cabbage. Then my friend ordered the fliet mignon and shrimp, which was also cooked very well, to our specification, as well as the new York steak and scallops. I had the chocolate mousse cake and from experience, desserts are never good at steakhouses but this one was superb. One thing I will say, normally restaurants decrease the portion sizes on the plates for DineLA but wow, Clearmans was super generous. The amount of food was massive and the food was delicious. We decided last minute to check this place out.To put it short, my husband was racially profiled at this establishment. We were told the wait would be 40 minutes and we sat down in the lobby waiting area for our turn. It was pretty packed and the majority were walk in like ourselves. They waited 10 minutes and were then taken to a table meanwhile we were still there waiting. I've been coming here since 1976. My family and I have enjoyed our birthdays here every year. I remember I used to always want to work at Clearmans because of the servers outfits and because everyone was so friendly. Well times have changed, but the one thing that hasn't changed is the friendliness and the amazing food and cocktails. They remodeled it and expanded it a couple years ago, it looks great! Not going to lie. It has been our tradition for over 7 years to come here for Valentines Day. This year was a complete let down. In the dining room that is. So let's start off with the positives! If I could rate just the bar (Matt, Edgar, Tiffany ,etc) they would get all 5 stars. They bust their butts back there and handle not only bar services but those dining in the bar area as well. Not to mention their patience and having to always be "on" personality wise. We should have just stayed and ate at the bar.....Matt was our server in the prior years a few times and was excellent. This experience we had Jessica in the dining area. She was nice and all but it just was a completely off experience. From the area we were in and asking for things we have always been accommodated over the years, she wouldn't and wouldn't even ask if they could. Then we have the Valentines special menu that whoever changed this menu should not be employed there any longer. No one cares about a long stem rose when you have taken out a desert course. One doesnt equal the other. Additionally the choices for the entrees have really no thought process. 20 0z prime rib? Lmao. On valentines? Who is downing 20 0zs of prime rib and not in a full ass coma? Lmao. I used to be able to get sea bass or my rib eye..... they no longer have the label of clarified butter. Its pads of butter and when u ask for more as its a rather large potatoes that is dry. Its like rationed to the point u feel like you're begging. We ended up not finishing half our meal. Potatoes were a no go with them being so dry and asking for butter we never got. What sucks is they made these changes to their menu and yet its still $90 per person $180 a couple before drinks. This year definitely not worth it. I've never had a disappointment in all the years coming here even before our "tradition" of valentnes. We used to watch here often. They renovated the bar area years ago and its great! But someone needs to come help them with the flow of the areas and with their menu options for such a popular "holiday". Its not like we are taking them off our list, but we will be either dining at the bar or looking for Matt. However, if the Valentines special menu doesnt improve, we will just be doing a la carte. There has never been a moment when I visit where it ends in disappointment. The service is fantastic, the food is delicious and beyond filling. All steaks come with a huge loaded baked potato and onion rings as well as a salad. My favorite of all things is that the Texas toast is bottomless. The whole vibe is dark and dim and a little throwback to a dark maroon 70's/80's feel. I've been coming here for years now, for many events and occasions. I never get tired of this place.
