I once saw an all-girl punk band play at the Coaster. They were loud and good and I fell in love--I always fall in love with girls I admire--with each one of them. I had a great time at the Coaster, but I'm hesitant to give it a raving review because I think the band had more to do with my good time than the bar did. The bar itself is a beachy dive bar. Came here on a whim because all others bars were closing due to covid 19 curfew...Cuba and Cheryl were working. Cuba at first was extremely dry and made us feel unwelcome although there were only 6 other people in the entire restaurant at the time...he warmed up a bit toward the end but whatever. Dead end road there. Cheryl had a very rude demeanor about "rules" - again making us feel unwelcome. Telling us we can't do this or we did this wrong (regarding masks and smoking a vape in a patio location) but saying it in passing and coming off pretty irritated and aggressive. When your restaurant is THIS dead you think you'd be grateful for patrons coming in. I have been bartending for a good 8 years and will never understand why ownership puts up with this standoffish behavior. Especially during a time that you should be grateful to be open and making money. We will not be returning. read more

We ordered the family style party of two platter, which had chicken, pulled pork, and brisket... for our sides we chose two orders of fries and one order of corn. The corn was elote style, next time I'll probably ask them to just make it plain. The chicken was supposed to be chicken breast, but we asked them to switch it to dark meat, so they gave us chicken thighs. I must say... the brisket was the best brisket I've ever had! It was so melt in your mouth tender, no need for a knife at all! The pulled pork was also very tender and juicy. No dry meat found here! The meat was so good, we didn't even need the bbq sauce. To be honest, at first when I saw the platter I wished there was more meat... but our family of three finished the meal full and satisfied. I will gladly return if I am in the area again. read more

The Managers and co-managers, bartenders, and staff are quick with a smile and there to help make sure your drinks and meal are top notch. We have been patronizing Coasters for over 25 years. Every time we visit San Diego we head there to rekindle old friendships or make new friends. All the food is great, and the presentation is appealing to the eye. Breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday mornings are huge and so reasonable. The mac and cheese, wow, so good. My favorite bar/restaurant in the mission beach area. The service is always amazing (especially Marilee), and the food always comes out perfectly cooked. The chicken strips are hand battered and hands down the best ones in town. The skinny chix is also a good choice and comes with sides. They also have a deal on champagne on sundays: $10 for a bottle that comes on ice. The setting and atmosphere is fun and casual. We especially like the outside area, which is a great place to watch a baseball game on their projector or play games like big Jenga. The decor (car on top/captain America) is also fun, too. CARL is the best! My buddies and I come here fairly regularly and always have a good time. The giant beers are cheap and the food is pretty good. My only issue is that they have Chive TV on the giant projector which triggers my ADD super hard and I end up having to switch seats to keep my back to it so I don't get lost in a random video compilation for minutes at a time. read more

But then I recall Coaster Saloon in mission beach got a new sheriff in town by the name of Chef Tim. So I head down there, walked in the rest was history. Server Victoria (Tori) was on it from the drinks to the extra sauces. Checked in every 5-8 minutes on us after Chef Tim blessed us with a smorgasbord of heavenly BBQ. Smoked brisket, chicken breast, baby back ribs, pulled pork, Mac and Cheese, beans, fried green bell pepper rings and awhhh yeah CORN BREAD! Rib meat fell right off the bone, and the brisket you could cut up with a fork. Their sauce was a sweet initial hit with a lingering heat afterward. Perfect. I'm sure we were out of there happy and full by the time we would've been seated at Phil's. Chef takes pride in his food and his kitchen and especially his customers. Absolutely the best food and service we have had in San Diego. We liked it so much we went back a second time! The smoked chicken was perfect. Juicy with lots of flavor. The brisket chili was also phenomenal. But the best item is their homemade pickles. Now who would think pickles would be reviewed, but let me tell you I asked for more! I highly recommend this place. We got kids meals with cheeseburgers and fries, hot wings, two TJ 's (pepper jack, fried jalapenos, chipotle aioli, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles) and a dranky drank. The food was so good. Well, the hot wings were kinda smoky, so they were okay. But everything else was good. The burgers are made with a mix of brisket, chuck, & short rib and the meat is never frozen. We had Shawn as our waiter and everything he recommended was great! The local Coronado Orange Ave Wit Beer was one I highly recommend and i looked for the whole trip at other establishments. We had the Brisket and the Big O burger... Probably one of the best burgers I have ever had. Cooked to perfection! Our daughter loved the Mac and Cheese! We ordered The Coaster burger and some Garbage Fries with the additional Brisket for a dollar more. My wife and I shared and devoured the burger and fries. Washed it down with a pint of Blood Orange IPA. Mission accomplished. Only reason for the 4 star rating was the food took a while to arrive and the server seemed out of it.
