I have been helping my mother do a remodel on her home. In doing so, I found her heating/cooling system was in need of some serious help. Our furnace blower couldn't start. Checked it and thought it was a capacitor issue (I saw the jet flame and heard the click sound on the fan, but it did not start). Don could come the next morning so I gave the work to him. I was told he will charge $95 service fee plus parts cost. Sounded reasonable. Here are my two complaints: 1. After his initial investigation, he did not tell me what he is going to do or what the cost will be to replace the necessary parts and finished/left in less than an hour. 2. I was shocked about the significant markup on the parts. On the receipt I saw these: - A $9 GE 97F9002 10uf Capacitor on amazon was charged for $62! - A $95 Honeywell Universal Furnace Control Board was charged for $312. (If I were given a chance, I would question this replacement as the board was only replaced a few years ago. ) - The $95 service fee is not contributed to the parts cost. I regret I did not do enough homework so I share the lesson. read more

I've worked with other HVAC companies before and this has been the best experience! The first time Don came out, he came out on time, spent time searching for the problem and then told me he had to order a couple of parts and then come back. Parts were ordered and he came back on a SUNDAY!!! (how many AC guys are that dedicated to their job that they would come out on a weekend when they got the part???). Again, he was on time for the second time and once the AC was fixed, he went through every vent in the house, explained what he had done and made sure that the AC was working correctly before he left. Our heater died just as the cold snap arrived. Our A/C unit outside was soon to require replacement because the plastic housing was deteriorating in the sun and weather. We weren't receiving enough heat or cooling upstairs, either. Hector arrived promptly to provide an estimate that was cheaper than the others, but what sold me on his services was that he noticed that the A/C unit was on a pad that was not level and agreed to check the air return vent connections. I ended up waiting an extra week for his services, but it was well worth it. He installed a new, more compact heater and A/C with a metal housing. He checked the vents and took pictures of the vent tubing that was disconnected because it had only been taped into place and the tape had aged out. Also, it seems that the plate connecting the tubing to the the air return had been cut about 2 inches too small and wasn't returning as much air as possible. He repaired both conditions. Now, we have adequate heat and cool air flowing upstairs, as well as current versions of furnace, A/C and air cleaner. He and his associate were courteous and respectful of the property. Don and Chris replaced our unit last Saturday for over 2k but the new ac unit stopped working less than 3 days. Turns out they didn't install a unit that works with our home electric system. They refuse to fix the issue, and just left. Now we paid for a new AC but have no AC working and a burn circuit board. Highly recommend to stay away from them. Either they don't know what they were doing and made serious technical mistake, or they are dishonest. read more

Long story short, they told me I needed a new compressor and quoted $4,500. Wow!! Love these guys! I might break the AC or furnace just to have them back out again. AC crapped out this last weekend - on a day that was 106°. I made no less than 10 calls - most didn't bother answering and almost all of the ones that went to voicemail had full voicemail boxes. One of the guys that answered told me that if I was willing (sight unseen) to just replace the unit (~$5k), he'd come out that day - otherwise it would be 6 weeks. Another one had an outgoing message that said "we're so busy that we probably won't return your call." And another said it would be at least a month for a service call - emergency or not. Chris responded to my online request for a quote within an hour. He was super friendly and professional. He said that he and Don would be available two days later. I was seriously ecstatic! Today, they were at my house within 30 minutes or so of the beginning of the time window. They were again very friendly and professional. Within minutes, they'd determined that it was the capacitor and related fuses - and that I certainly didn't need a whole new unit. The total bill came to less than $200. A bargain, in my book. Colbalt has come out to my place several times. Twice to replace the capacitor on my A/C over a 5 year period. During this time, it was 100 degrees and all of the HVAC guys were taking 5 days before they could show up. Colbalt showed up the next day each time. On their third visit, I needed to have my Nest Thermostat installed which went without a hitch and charged a very reasonable rate. Will continue to recommend Colbalt to family and friends and will be using them the next time I have an HVAC problem read more

Don and Chris are fantastic!! They are very approachable, kind and friendly! Pros: 1. They pick up the phone right away, no voicemail means no waiting 2. They gave me an appointment the next day 3. They were on time, arrived at the beginning of their window 3. They know what is wrong with my unit when I told them what is not working 4. They fixed the unit for me within an hour 5. Their price is reasonable. 6. They don't sell you stuff that you don't need. I asked them whether the unit needs to be serviced each year, they said no! That's honest business people. Cons: There is nothing to write about!!! I would refer them anytime!! They will get a call back from me if I need another heating and cooling job done. BTW, I disagree with the person giving them a one star. The $85 (or whatever the fee is now) is the service call fee. All technicians charge a fee for the service call no matter if they do a job for you or not. They went out to your place twice, and even if you are not satisfied with what they do, they still need to charge a service fee. Give a break to the technicians. You cannot ask the service fee back as a refund!! It is their gas money!! Please be fair. read more

We had less air flowing in our bedrooms. We called Cobalt based on recommendation from my realtor. They came and gave us an estimate of $500 to fix and took $85 for giving an estimate and told us that they will apply this as credit if we hired them to fix it. When I called them to hire, Don told me they would put me on the waiting list and would give me a call when their current job finished. I waited a month but they never called back. I called and scheduled appointment. They came and tried to fix. It improved but did not fully fix it. They asked for $200 more to fully fix it. Given that they had previously looked at the job, this did not seem right to me. But given the heat wave, and how busy everyone is running, I agreed. Don demanded the money for the work done, which I refused since job was not fully done. Don was really rude in his demeanor. He is a big man, and I felt a bit scared. They came again after requisite parts and tried to fix it. However, it only became worse. I wanted them to undo the last part, but Don went ahead and undid everything. While Chris was up the attic and undoing, I even told Don that I am willing to pay for the last time's work, and live with the way it was, but Don did not want to talk to Chris. This means, after spending $85 and taking time-off from work on two separate days, waiting for more than a month for them to fix it, we are back to where we were. I asked them to return the $85, which they refused. I can understand things turning out more complex than they imagined but not the rudeness. Given all the great reviews here, I can only speculate that they are too busy to care about customer service anymore. read more

The father and son team of Don and Chris replaced our AC unit with ninja like precision while working with our manic over-scheduled calendar without missing a beat. The unit they replaced was probably built by Neanderthals and installed by untrained Cro-Magnons who borrowed MacGyver's tools, paperclips, duct tape and toothpicks, to complete the job. Needless to say Don and Chris had some tough stuff to navigate around. In retrospect, if I had skipped over all phone calls, quotes and soul crushing research and just gone with the Cobalt family based on all the positive Yelp reviews in the first place, I could have saved a bunch of time and energy while still preserving a little bit more of my soul. We purchased a 1962 house and after our remodel we noticed that some rooms registers were not getting forced air. I diagnosed it to be a dislocated duct. I called Cobalt to give me a quote to fix the collapsed duct - something that was not DIY since my crawl space is pretty tight. Chris and DOn( father + son) came promptly. They gave me a quote for replacing the dislocated part OR redoing the entire home duct work with flex duct at $250/register. During this free on site quote - they fixed my thermostat, tightened a valve in my AC to prevent coolant back flow and in general were professional - clean and respectful. I chose to replace the entire duct work. I thought the price was fair for bay area and didn't seek multiple quotes. They took 6 hours to complete the work. Cleaned up after themselves --- took with them all the old ducts as opposed to leaving in crawl space. The vents work fine now - infact i register greater airflow than before. They were also kind enough to fix my return duct in the attic for free --- it didn't have insulation and was leaky in multiple locations. The return duct is alot quieter now that the leaks have been fixed. My one constructive criticism or area of improvement is for them to get the hardware to do a full fledged leak test after they replace ducts. They measured cfm at the registers but thats not very comprehensive. I will hire them again for HVAC problems. read more

Last year I called this company and they came out right away and fixed the problem within a few minutes and then today my furnace went out again and so they must have put a sticker on my furnace last year so I looked them up and saw how happy everyone was with the service forgetting that I used them last year. I called and Don said that they could be there in an hour and when he showed up at the door he mentioned that he's been here a year ago and even remembered what the problem was!!
