My husband and I were in Santa Monica this past Saturday morning and looked for a new place to try, and Cobi's popped up as one of the more interesting restaurants in the area. Having a Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction to their name, we decided to drop by for brunch. It did not disappoint. First of all, we reserved a table in their dining room (the patio looked lovely too and a lot recommend sitting there, but just our personal preference to stay inside), and it was so cute! Love the cozy decor and it felt like you were eating in a grandmother's living room. My husband and I ordered several dishes to share: the Cobi's Fried Chicken, the Nasi Goreng with Crispy Pork Belly, the Rendang Roti Wraps, and lastly the Kaya French Toast for dessert. It was a little too much food and we ended up not finishing everything, but we were excited to try them all as we like Southeast Asian food (and not so many options for this close to us). Every dish was delicious and we would not hesitate to order them again. The fried chicken was crunchy, spicy, savory, and sweet (this was the best dish for my husband among what we ordered) - we ate it with the fried rice too. Loved the crunchy pork belly on the fried rice, and the egg perfectly went with the rice. The beef rendang was tender and flavorful, and the roti was yummy with a good grilled texture. I loved the Kaya French Toast (this was my favorite dish). I did not really taste the Kaya part, but I really enjoyed it. Perfectly crunchy and sweet, this was not your usual run of the mill French Toast. The berries and the condensed milk were the perfect touch. Service was a little slow, not really sure why as there were only a few guests the time we were there. The delicious food made up for it though. TL:DR - Very tasty food, but pricey, and small portions. Cobi's from the outside could easily be mistaken for a house, but that's not necessarily a bad thing because the inside gives off a cozy lived in vibe. The plates and silverware all look like they come from your grandmother's house and the waiters exude a welcoming energy. The menu has a wide variety of foods and we got a handful of the dishes. Kanpachi: We started off with this appetizer which was quite unusual, but tasty. Bathed in coconut milk and a little bit of chili and lime, this is not how I usually eat kanpachi, but was pleasantly surprised by it's flavor. The fish tasted even fresher and the coconut milk gave it a nice silky finish. Beef rendang: This had a peanuty spicy flavor to it that went well with the beef. It's texture is similar to a watery curry and was a nice contrast to the kanpachi earlier. Butter chicken: The butter chicken was incredible. Another very flavorful dish that was smooth and tasty. I can't quite identify all the spices used, but it was just like an explosion in my mouth. We got roti with this dish and it's oily fried texture just brought it all together. Nasi Goreng: This was probably my favorite dish of the night. The egg was cooked perfectly and its yolk coated the rice in it's deliciousness. The crispy chip at the top also added a whole other level of complexity. Even though it might look like fried rice, it's flavor went beyond it. Thai tea pannacotta: this is the quintessential taste of thai tea boba, it even comes with boba! The taste is exactly like thai tea, but the texture is a soft custardy firmness. I loved it! If you're a fan of thai tea, then you definitely have to get this dish. Overall, Cobi's food was very delicious and each dish brought some new flavor to my mouth. My only complaint would be the size of the dish. For the price of each dish, I kind of expected to get more food, especially since they encourage everyone to share. That being said, if you like South-East Asian food, Cobi's is worth the visit. read more

Some of the best south East Asian food I have had in a very long time. I ended up ordering the butter chicken which was really good. I also got the Kanpachi which was actually the best thing I tried in a long time. It's sort of a hamachi crudo like dish. It has a perfect coconut cream sauce with a hint of lime. The perfect dish on a hot summer day. It was probably my favorite thin I had. Also word to the wise if you are going to sit inside west light breathable clothing it can get pretty warm in there and I don't remember seeing any fans and there was no AC in the small inside dining area. Maybe just opt to sit on the patio outside or garden as it might make you meal more enjoyable and less sweaty. I was very disappointed that they were out of the fried chicken an hour before brunch service closed, on a Saturday. Seems like they could predict this better, but I guess come earlier if you would like to try this. I ordered the chicken satay in place, and figured they'd cap out at a 4 star review due to this - how wrong I was. The chicken satay was incredible and may have been my favorite item, with the dal roti really challenging for top spot. I wasn't as keen on the beef roti though this was elevated by adding a little of the acidic slaw that came with the chicken satay. Our meal was rounded out by the pretty tasty nasi goreng with pork belly and the amazing Bali banana pancakes. Incredible food. The service was a little slow at first, to get the order in but they seemed to really pick up the pace after and were very kind and considerate. We had a great birthday celebration for Lissa G at Cobi. The service, ambiance, music, and food were all excellent. Rafael, the sommelier, pointed us in the right direction with a nice organic Chardonnay. Yes, all organic wines, love it! What I loved... The Beef Rendang is a hardy dish with delicious flavors. The sauce that accompanied it on the side was also perfect with the Nasi Goreng. Only shortcoming was the Beef Short Rib was a little over cooked, but still delicious. "Hired security" was very abrasive and was a total ass. The staff outside, the "hired security" was a total 180 from the staff inside. The inside the staff and food were 5 stars but the asshole outside really ruined my experience. Our party of 5 on a Saturday to celebrate a friend's birthday and they were having live music! It really set the mood for the restaurant. There is an outdoor patio, inside and bar seating outside the restaurant. We got a reservation at 1 and was able to push it back to 1:30PM on short notice! All the food that we ordered was so good in terms of flavor. However, a little on the pricey side for the portion size but we were all full by the end of the meal. The drinks that we ordered were all good and more importantly strong. Our favorite from the brunch menu was the pear puree cocktail! Overall, I would come back and try the dinner menu! read more

We could only get an 8pm reservation on a Monday, we booked that but were starving, so we went to have drinks and apps at another place beforehand. Anyhoo ambiance was cute. Thai and Indian are two of my favorite cuisines, and I was really hoping to like Cobi's, but sadly I just wasn't super impressed. The good- Service was solid, though the restaurant was a bit noisy, and it was difficult to hear the servers. The roti was delicious and we were all fans of it. The space is super cute, with unique decor and beautiful fresh flowers on a few tables. They also have a nice outdoor patio with several heaters. The bad- all the food was mediocre at best, nothing blew our minds. Food was heavy, and nowhere near as flavorful as the Thai and Indian I've had at authentic spots around the city. The dal came out cold and we had to send it back to have it re-heated. If you're someone who is all about ambiance, you'll like this place, but if you're also looking for great food, skip this spot in favor of somewhere else. read more

This place is super tasty! I love all the fresh flavors and herbs! We tried the Chef's Tasting Menu. The hamachi was fresh and the sauce was sooooo good 5/5. This was one of the best papaya salads I've had. I loved the dressing and the kick of spice 4.5/5. I am not a big fan of samosas. This was my least favorite dish. The only truly amazing ones I've had were at Farmhouse. It's on another level there. But I would give Cobi's a 3/5. The head on shrimp was good. I just wish they were meatier 3.5/5. One dish that was out of this world was the beef randang. I love the bread that was served with it 6/5. The shortribs were a bit dry but flavorful 4/5. Branzino was good but not the best I've had. 3.5/5. Some commented that the Thai Tea Pudding was too sweet. I thought it was perfect. Holy cow. This place was shockingly amazing. First, the way we discovered it was very new for us - it came up on our TikTok feed. My husband and I agreed that it was one of the most visually stunning places we had seen. When we looked at reviews, the consensus was the food was absolutely delicious. I must say, even then, I wasn't expecting anything special. We started with the kampachi, which is fresh, light, melt in your mouth with a great balance of acidity with creamy coconut The Malay/Indonesian style is unbelievable. We then had the curry puffs and papaya salad. Curry puffs reminded me of when I lived in Kuala Lumpur, so perfectly crispy but soft as you get toward the center. The papaya salad was nice and fresh, not too spicy at all. The mint cooled things down and was unusual yet delicious. The Nasi Goreng with crispy pork belly added was UNBELIEVABLE. Not only was the rice perfectly seasoned and flavorful, the pork belly was literally the perfect texture. Melt in your mouth with a perfectly crispy shell. Wow. Not a bite left. The Beef Rendang was also amazing, loved the creamy sauce it came with on the side. We ordered 2 sides of roti because it's so perfect, again, reminds me of being in Malaysia. For dessert, we had the boba and Thai tea pudding. I will be thinking about this dessert for a long time. Absolutely delicious, and not too sweet. Cocktails and skin contact wine were perfect as well. This elevated yet unpretentious restaurant is an absolute star. Or I just read "Chicken piccata so over-salted I hope the dog enjoys the leftovers tomorrow, I brought home most of the dish." Did they speak to their service? How could the restaurant learn that something was wrong when patrons even have their leftovers boxed to take home? As a dog owner, I want to take the writer and shake him or her really bad and say "You give over-salted food to your dog? Anyone with a bit of brain understands this is a horrible idea... I hope you agree. So If I had a say on this portal, I would offer just to see the ratings of my friends. So I would see what the ratings were by like-minded people. Sadly, I have no say. I try not to compare apples with oranges. A place like this does not correspond to "The Ritz". At first, I assume that a restaurant is clean, they do not greet you with a gun - and they deliver whatever they promise. I do not give stars for things that are expected. In my rating scheme, three or more stars are awarded if they actually exceed my expectations. Four, if I am sure I will come back. Cutest Asian fusion restaurant in Santa Monica! Made reservations on Resy, arrived exactly at 6:15 pm and was seated immediately in the main dining room. There are 3 dining areas - indoor main, outdoor/covered and the garden patio. The entry area of the restaurant is adorned with flowers hanging from the ceiling - so beautiful! I was transformed into a garden setting - the main dining room had heavy floral wallpaper and this luscious ambiance- 5 stars. Ordered the gai yang chicken - tender, flavorful, pretty good. The winner dish is the Nasi Goreng with Shrimp- although the egg on top was over cooked, I like the runny egg oozing onto the rice, but overall excellent- a little spice in this dish and I highly recommend. The roti was so buttery, fluffy - delicious. Food-4 stars. Service - 5 stars. The server Suthida was very attentive, made sure our water was refilled, made great recommendations for the entrees, very happy she was our server. Cobi's really, truly delivers, on nearly every count: terrific Indonesian cuisine, warm, attentive service, and a homey Santa Monica vibe with a slight late Victorian feel. Appalling service and wait time for food. It took 52 minutes for the Gai Yang Chicken and Beef Rendang to hit our table. Both dishes were tasty but unremarkable. You can get similar rendang at The Park's Finest and chicken in Thai Town. Our server did not check on our table once in that hour. I had to flag him down to ask about our food after 45 minutes had passed since our last dish. The garden patio was nice and the Kampachi and Curry Puffs were delicious and came out quickly out of the kitchen. The roti was excellent and flaky. Jasmine rice was not cooked well, very clumpy and gummy. But our server was neither knowledgable, attentive, or hospitable. I don't know if they were short staffed today on a Wednesday night, but our server did not acknowledge the exuberant delay or offer any concessions. The curry puffs and kingfish small plates were my second favorite. The papaya salad was very refreshing and herbaceous. And the short ribs were literally fall off the bone tender. If you get the ribs, definitely get the sambal sampler - you need the extra flavor because the meat is by and large not so seasoned (but very high quality). Chef and crew consistently knock it out the park and I'm constantly finding myself craving the grilled prawns. Beef shortrib falls off the bone and when I dip the roti in the butter chicken there is always a moan of pleasure that escapes. Make a reservation and don't sleep on the wine list and dessert. Amazing family-style spot to come with friends! We've come twice with friends and loved it both times. Very social and eclectic environment with great service. The back patio is really nice as it's basically candle-lit and surrounded by plants, and inside, it feels like you're in a cozy grandma's house (if grandma had wild style). Across two visits, I tried almost everything on the menu and seriously loved it all. The fusion of Indonesian and Indian flavors comes together PERFECTLY. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, so bring a few extra friends and get it all! If you plan on getting the Devil Chicken Curry, be prepared for some spice! This was five stars no question. The food was to DIE for - kanapachi served first stole the show for me. I would drink that sauce. Pork dumplings followed and were also delicious - a bit spicy with another insanely flavorful sauce to pair with. Next up was the nasi goreng cooked with pork belly and topped with a fried egg - really good fried rice dish. We ended with butter chicken, beef rendang, and two sides of roti to dip. The chicken in the butter chicken was so tender (something hard to find in the era of delivery service Indian food) and the sauce incredibly flavorful. This was my boyfriends favorite dish, as he claimed he could eat it every day. The beef rendang was equally as good in my opinion. Pretty rich but really flavorful and sooo good topped on the roti. Our server recommended 5-6 dishes for two, but we with the 5 dishes pictured, were full and brought home leftovers. Do with that what you will. Definitely a bit pricey, but it was an enjoyable meal. What we got for 4: - Beef Short Ribs: This was sauced so generously and it was the perfect balance of charred and sweet. - Curry puffs: Highlight of the night! The curry filling was textured with soft veggies and curry paste, and the dipping sauce went very well with it. - Kanapachi: The least worth-it, based off of the smaller portion size and it was quite light compared to everything else so might have been overpowered. - Pork dumplings: Delicious! Skin was perfectly cooked and chewy, sauced nicely with chili oil. - Devil chicken curry: I think there were too many loose spices in the sauce that made the texture hard to swallow if that makes sense. It can be quite spicy depending on your tolerance! Wish the sauce was smoother but it still tasted nice. The interior decor was super cute and had nighttime cottagecore vibes. Our server was attentive without being overbearing and really appreciated that.
