We ended with the Shaved Ice dessert and that was actually very good as well. They are walking distance from the beach and afterwards we walked over to the beach. Came here on a Sunday night for dinner with some friends. They recommended it since they saw the restaurant on the Michelin Guide, and wow it did not disappoint. We came with a party of 6 so we got to try a lot of things on the menu, which I would recommend doing. The portions are smaller but it's still filling. We ordered the Kanpachi, Pork Dumplings, Curry Puffs, Nasi Goreng, Devil Chicken Curry, Butter Chicken and the Beef Short Rib. Everything was SO flavorful and unique, but my favorites were the Short Rib and Nasi Goreng. The Short Rib fell off the bones without having to use a knife and the Nasi Goreng was the star of the show. Not to mention, the restaurant is SO cute. When you enter, they have flowers all over the ceiling and the tables and silverware makes you feel like you're at a dinner party at a friend's house. This was an INCREDIBLE meal. First, the ambiance is so adorable and cute. Love the pink and all the flowers. The food was incredible, every single bite. We got the hamachi which was full of flavor. I was incredibly excited to try this unique fusion of southeast Asian dishes, and I'm happy to report that the food did not disappoint! The nasi goreng, which is Indonesian fried rice, was packed full of flavor, though quite spicy. It also came with a shrimp cracker, which is very commonly found throughout Indonesia. The dry aged Branzino was definitely the star of the meal, as the savory broth, smokiness of the fish, and refreshing mint and Thai basil toppings came together in a way that was satisfying yet light. The Thai tea pudding was very rich and decadent, and I really enjoyed the surprisingly complementing lemongrass pairing. The only criticism I have is that the center of the boba was hard (likely refrigerated rather than warm/soft/chewy/fresh). Pure poetry. Honestly, the best dining discovery I've had in a long time, and to be completely honest (and selfish), when I posted the experience on social media, I may have purposely neglected to name the restaurant for fear that I will have to fight for seating on future visits. Amazingly cozy, the atmosphere resonates with eclectic artistry. From the upside-down rose garden in the foyer, to the organized chaos of the dining furniture within, Cobi's is that new student in school that everyone notices, and simply wants to be friends with. I know my Indonesian, Thai, and Indian cuisine, both in their home countries as well as overseas. I love both street and fine-dining prepared foods, and I was simply dying to see how Cobi's played the tenuous link between High Street and Main Street. In a nutshell..... you can TASTE the training. You can TASTE the experience. In most Southeast Asian dishes, Street food is packed with simpler yet bolder flavors and spices, whereas fine-dining tends to blend the bold with refinements in either method or flavors. Cobi's food, especially the rendang (a dish I am an absolute expert in), is the first time I experienced undiscovered country. Rendang, especially the dry variety, typically has concentrated, bold flavor, which Cobi definitely has. Yet, they add an amazing gulai, which admittedly first raised an eyebrow, that introduced such a blending effect, that the bold had subtleties I have never experienced before. The interesting thing? Once I tasted it with all flavors, I couldn't go back to just enjoying the normal dish. Cobi's literally elevated my palate, and I can't go back to the way it was before. Branzino is one of my favorite go to dishes in general, and is appreciated for its simplicity. Cobi's managed to own this dish with an amazing subtle touch of their yellow curry. You get to still enjoy branzino in its own glory, but elevate it with flavors that normally wouldn't work for me. For the Vegans...... dal is a very difficult dish for me to love in most places. I've had the best overseas, but have never found a place in the US that is good enough. They are all 7s on a scale of 10. Cobi's Mr Dal is a very solid 9. I absolutely loved it! I swam four miles in the ocean and I was starving. I looked like a drown mouse; wet hair, runny nose, red eyes, t-shirt and cut offs (not a good look for a lovely restaurant). I asked if I could get a To Go order. I was gently escorted to the cashier who took my order. Then I was offered a seat in the dining room to wait. Reservation: Made a reservation online well in advance because of how popular this spot is. Also if you need to modify, email is the only way to do so as their phone number doesn't work/mailbox is full. Parking: typical Santa Monica so street parking only but luckily everything is 3 hour metered which is plenty for a dinner. Food: our friends have a quality taste palette and made up of foodies and everyone loved it! Short ribs, butter chicken, fried rice, curry puffs and kanpachi were the favorites! Also we did the pitcher of chai/soju/hibiscus and it was soooo good! Ambience- so so cute, aesthetic is everything these days and this place nailed it. Saw this place on the Michelin guide, and my sister made reservations for this place. I tried to call them before to let them know that we are celebrating my sister's birthday, but the phone kept ringing. No problem, I understand that all restaurants can be busy. We showed up and the hostess was kind to us. I mentioned that we are celebrating my sister's birthday, in case that mattered to them. She responded with an "of course, it matters! I will make a note and let the server know." I didn't want to say it again to our waitress, so I just went ahead and ordered what we wanted for the table. Our server (I think her name was Sathilda?) was kind and was always smiling at us. That said, we would often have to flag her down or have to reach out to her if we had a follow-up question, because she was often running from table to table. She is definitely not the type of waitress to chat with her customers. Decor: such a sweet and cozy vibe! It honestly feels like you were dining at a bed-and-breakfast or a cozy home. They really nailed the decor. In the entrance, there are hanging flowers everywhere. Even the bathroom looks really sweet. That is not something I usually say lol. Food: Food was pretty darn good. We ordered the Kanpachi, grilled prawns, curry puffs, beef short ribs, butter chciken, rice, roti, Thai tea pudding. Honestly, all the dishes were outstanding. The beef short ribs were really salty, and I was not a big fan of them, but my sister really liked them. I also probably wouldn't have ordered the grilled prawns again. OK, I'm basically listing all of them again :-) The cost of the food is pretty reasonable for the quality that you get. That said, let's talk about the service and the manager. We received our bill, which was fine, but I thought it was a little disappointing that they did not do anything for my sister's birthday. Our friend flagflagged down the waitress who got the manager. The manager arrived and abruptly said, "is there a problem here?" Even from the very onset, the tone and the nature of the way he had asked that question, unfortunately set the brusque tone for the remainder of our conversation. I mentioned that we had told the hostess about the birthday, but it seemed as though the waitress had no idea. He confirmed that the waitress had no idea and then said that he had checked, and that my sister's birthday is actually a week from today, and not today. I had no idea what to do with that information, and it almost felt as though he was making us feel guilty for requesting a birthday celebration when her birthday is a week from today. I was put in a position where I felt like I had to defend myself, and I explained that, I only see my sister once or twice a year, and I'm unfortunately unable to see her on her actual birthday. He said that he would be able to take the dessert off of our bill. He mentioned that maybe the next time he could arrange for a couple items off of the bill. I was really put off by his tone and unapologetic manner, and asked for his name and the number of years that he has been managing this place. His name is David and apparently he's been managing this place for a year. I told him that I was really put off by this whole interaction, and I really had wanted to sing to my sister and asked if there was something he could bring. He ended up bringing out ice cream and a candle, but again was not apologetic at all. The ice cream was a bit lack luster. If this place was indeed truly on Michelin guide, I would've expected different service. I would've expected the manager to approach us and check to see how we are doing first. Then, proceed and check in to see if there was anything that he could help us with. Then, I would've expected him to ask a question similar to that of, "I am so sorry that that happened, how can I make this right?" Or come up with suggestions besides "I can take the dessert off of the bill." I feel like Applebees would have offered the same thing, and we were not dining at Applebees (no offense to Applebees!) The decor and the quality of the food are outstanding, but unfortunately, the interaction with the manager left us with a sour taste in our mouths. --- Update: Another manager reached out to me and my sister. Flavor-wise is quite good (I am bias because I'm Indonesian). But my friend love it. It came with gluten free chips (which is not my favorite, but my friend loves it). Came here for our anniversary and they were so sweet! We got a card and some roses from the restaurant which was very thoughtful. The place itself is so cute and charming it is almost like a house that got converted into a restaurant with fairy vibes. The food was also good I really enjoyed the kanpachi appetizer. It was the first time I've had a sauce like that on raw fish. The fried rice was also crispy and amazing. The butter chicken was good but I would have liked the chicken to be more tender. We got roti with it which was small but good. Our main entree was a special, a fried fish I forgot what kind. But it was very good just a little too spicy. Finally I had the opportunity to try this restaurant after long time I was planning to. We came in on a Saturday night, after a rsv ( u definitely need one). Main: - Egg Noodles with pork belly, ginger relish, szechuan. Here our first and only disappointment. There was a very strong sauce flavor that we didn't go through... very savory. We didn't finished our plate. We ask our server about it and he said this was the plate. Then I suggested him next time to maybe tell customers, especially the one not very familiar with this amazing cuisine, about this strong and savory flavor. - Gai Jang Chicken with lemongrass marinade, shaved cabbage, burnt chili nam jim. My first time at Cobi to celebrate a friend's birthday. I noticed that it's Indian, Thai and Indonesian food and I think we ordered from all three types of cuisines. We started off with the curry puffs and they were delicious. A light, crispy outside with a curry filling was a nice start to our meal. We followed that up with the pork belly salad. The pork belly was cooked perfectly with a nice crunch. It had some heat to the dish but not overpowering. Our next courses were fried rice, beef rendang, branzino and roti. The beef had the texture of pulled pork. The roti bread was fresh and hot out of the oven. We finished off the meal and shared an ice cream sundae with chocolate cookies. The service was attentive but not overbearing. The decor gave the illusion of being in a tropical island with lots of plants. I think it's best to experience multiple different proteins and order a variety of different flavors, everything is quite delicious. Overall, Cobi's is a great place with delicious food. Restaurant is worth the hype! We made a reservation for 7pm on a Saturday and were seated quickly. My fiance ordered a glass of wine and I ordered the nasi goreng which was basically a fried rice dish with an egg and chicken. It was delicious and I HIGHLY recommend getting this. Additionally, we ordered the butter chicken and the Gai Yang Chicken. Both were good, my favorite was the chicken! The lemongrass marinade and shaved cabbage were so fresh and delightful. My #1 favorite restaurant in all of LA. Incredible food and ambiance. Cobi's is specific and unique in everything whether it be the decor, wine selection, menu items, plating/seating, I just love it! The food is amazing and actually got back me into Indian food. It's a mix of Indian-Indonesian food - I love the cuisine options and menu selections. My typical order is curry puffs, pork dumplings, beef rendeng, and butter chicken with rice and roti. You can taste the love and care that's put into the food - so so good! Serving size is generous especially if you order apps, I always go home with leftovers. The decor feels like you're in your grandmas Alice in wonderland house and garden. Bright florals, antique chairs/tables, assorted plates, exaggerated floral decor - it's so fun! Even the bathroom is adorable with pink walls and tiling and baby blue appliances. Cobis takes such care with design. Also wanted to mention the wine selection - also very unique and gets me out of my comfort zone. They have a lot of natural wines and have a long list of different varietals. The service is typically great! Celebrated my birthday dinner here and it surpassed my expectations. It is hard to achieve authentic flavors with different kinds of Asian cuisine while still being a trendy/high end spot to command a premium. Dishes ranged from fusion to Thai, Indian, and Indonesian. This is the what Cassia (another popular Asian fusion restaurant in Santa Monica) was aiming for but fell short of delivering. Nasi goreng - A must! I was initially skeptical as it's a standard Indonesian dish, but this was unique with different textures Chicken larb - Overall good, a bit on the salty side if you are not a fan of fish sauce I would skip. Beef rendang - Good but nothing too memorable Salmon crudo - the creamy mayo and shrimp chip combo flavors paired really well together Butter chicken - Definitely delicious but I felt like the flavors were a bit muted designed for the western palate ha. Butter chicken at Indian restaurants have more spices/more of a bite to it. Great with their roti Pandan shaved ice - YESSS! I love all things pandan. When we were recommended Cobi's, they described it as Indian food at grandmas house. That's exactly what it felt like from the decor to the service to the food. The servers welcome you into the family when you sit -- literally calling you family and make curated recommendations. We went with two dishes: - Butter Chicken: I have tried this at MANY different places and they do it very very well. Something different is that their chicken pieces are much smaller than most I've tried which made them more flavorful and super tender. - Shrimp and Short Rib Noodle Special: any restaurant with an interesting special gets extra points in my book and this dish was amazing!
