The Cockeye barbecue is simply the best barbecue restaurant I've eaten at in Ohio. In fact, being from Atlanta, it is easily competitive with the best barbecue restaurants in Atlanta or the Carolinas. I don't count Texas, because Texas barbecue is only passable in my honest opinion.I even went so far as to try the beef brisket, not a traditional Southeastern Q, and was insanely satisfied. The sandwich was on a fresh roll with pepper jack cheese and peppers, but the brisket itself was to rave about. The meet was incredibly moist, and the flavor of smoke was clear and evident with a salty fatty crunch in the meat itself. My wife on the other hand had a pork cheek taco made with smoked pork in a homemade teriyaki dressing served with a side of macaroni and cheese and onion rings. On top of that we had a set of fried green tomatoes that were salty tangy crispy and delicious served with a sauce that highlighted but not mask the flavor of the food. We love this restaurant, and found it only about six months ago, it's clean and has the feeling of the barbecue joints I'd frequent in North Atlanta and an array of sauce that shows reverence for all the regional cues. You come in, you order at the counter, you hope you find your seat and you get some of the best Q I've ever had. Without a doubt my number one go to spot in Northeast Ohio. read more

So glad we found this place. The prices are reasonable and the food is amazing. It was so good we went back the next day lol.. I really enjoyed the pig melt. Amazing! This restaurant was a great experience all around. The moment we walked in we were greeted by the owner who walked us through the menu and described how everything is prepared, an excellent first step for establishing trust in the quality of meat we would receive there. We were not disappointed! The pulled pork was nothing short of perfection. They encourage tasting the sauces, take them up on it, they are fantastic. I had the mess plate and have to say the macaroni and cheese was some of the best I have had at a BBQ location, they also use locally sourced ingredients which is a nice added touch. Excellent BBQ joint in the making. I got the wings with cajun dry rub and tried some of a friend's chicken and pulled pork. I have to say that everything was delicious but had a huge drawback. Both my wings, and my friend's chicken were, I believe, undercooked. I noticed my wings were on the pinkish side, but attributed this to the fact that smoking meat can sometimes give it a pink color (I was being optimistic as I think they actually fry them and don't smoke them). However, at the conclusion of eating both of our chicken dishes we noticed that the center of his chicken was downright bloody, meaning the pink color was most certainly from being undercooked. I did take a picture of this but it was quite unappetizing, so I am going to refrain from actually posting it. This would scare off most people, (and yes, we realize that eating undercooked chicken is not OK) but we tend to have iron stomachs, so we went with it. The 62 mile drive was worth every bite. We loved everything we tried from the pulled pork, meaty fall off the bone ribs, mac n cheese, baked beans, collard greens, fried cheesy gritts and a huge bag of freshly fried cajun pork rinds. It is rare to find a place that puts as much effort into their side dishes as they do their main menu items and we were very impressed! We made sure to pace ourselves and leave room for their home made award winning ice cream! And we were delighted to learn we could break a scoop into two flavors so we had more chances to sample the seasonal and staple flavors. I originally had a 5 star rating, but as this place grows in popularity, and as new employees come into the kitchen, the quality steadily slips. I have not felt the need to update my rating until now. I ordered the Polish Boy. The sausage itself was good but 1) there was very little Cole slaw on it, 2) the fries were cold and stale-ish, and 3) the bun was tough/chewy. I also had onion rings. Exactly 3 come with the order and to add insult to injury they were not even warm. I also ordered hush puppies. They were at least warm. Sadly I will not be visiting again. Just can't get enough! I have tried almost half the menu now and I must saw that everything is tasty and delicious. My current favorite are the baked beans. I always buy Large and take some home. Don't get me started on their small batch ice cream! Dark Chocolate Blackberry (with real berries). Buttermilk Pie and Butter Pecan are my hubby's favorite flavors. Be sure to try out their homemade blackberry sauce. I'm from TN and this is the best BBQ sauce I have ever eaten. Just can't say enough. Awesome! Some of the best pulled pork I have ever had. So many barbecue choices and they are all good. They had practically everything, even fried catfish! We only had to wait 5 minutes for our food, and I am not rounding literally 5 minutes. The only thing was that they didn't have chicken legs or thighs, they only had shredded chicken. Picked up a couple racks of ribs and various fixings. Sadly the ribs were so tough that we abandoned eating them. Need to be able to cut them with a fork but even with aggressive pulling, bone knawing and lots of chewing it just didn't work. BBQ sauce flavor was sweet with a heavy dose of vinegar. Mac n cheese was different. Not sure the flavoring (Chipotle?) added was something I like in Mac. Onion rings were fine. Texas toast had no garlic so it was just white toast with butter. The food that we order was not cooked right and when we asked the young lady about it she looked at us like we was crazy. Been to Cockeye several times and never had a bad experience. Have tried the Pulled Pork, Brisket, and the ribs: all fantastic. An important part of BBQ to me is the sides, and this place has several to choose from. The Mac n Cheese, Fries, Joe Joes, Hush Puppies, Cheesy potatoes, and more are all great. The food was great and definitely better than anything I've tried in the area when it comes to Barbeque food. The only complaint I have is that there is a really small dining place and since it seems to be a popular spot, it's a little cramped. Got the 3 meat to split- Brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken, side of fries and green beans. After a few bites we went back up to try the collard greens and onion rings too. My first visit to Warren for business, and had time for lunch. Lucky me, cuz I found Cockeye BBQ. When you walk in, no actually before you get in the door, you will be blown away by the aroma of the Smokey goodness cooking inside. I'm definitely coming back cuz I couldn't try everything.
