Cockeye has the potential to one day achieve Hot Dog Shoppe/Sunrise status in the Warren area. The bbq is absolutely amazing. Everything I have had there has been good, but the brisket especially is absolutely out of this world. The smoky flavor, burnt tips, and amazing sauce all come together to achieve perfection, and I'd recommend it both on a sandwich or as dinner meal. Be sure to combine it with their amazing cheesy potatoes. I moved away to CA, and Cockeye has joined Hot Dog Shoppe as one of the "must-do's" when I am home in Ohio. It is really nice seeing a local restaurant do well, and I am excited to see Cockeye become a Warren staple! read more

Yum Yum Yum..... We are from out of town (PA) and were in the area for the Thanksgiving Holiday and came across Cockeye's. We are so glad we did. I got the pulled bbq sandwich, my daughter got the fried chicken and my husband got the bbq platter w/ribs. Everyone enjoyed their lunch. When I eat at Cockeye BBQ, I think two things: 'this flavor IS Youngstown,' and 'I wonder how long this place can stick around,' but for the reasons that guests might not expect. One of the reasons that Cockeye BBQ has become my favorite place to go is that the atmosphere is welcoming and folkish: part antique, part modern, low-key, and all blue-collar. Globe string lights hang above the dining area, which is a testament to the art of barbecue with things such as steer skulls on the wall. There's a hint of vintage, but the wood-and-steel feel is all Mahoning Valley. The restaurant's crew operates on a line that's visible to guests, which is reminiscent of something between a classic diner and an assembly line. A variety of craft beers and craft sodas are offered, highlighted is Cheerwine. It's a testament to Cockeye BBQ's attention to detail. As top pasta houses might offer a wine to pair with their best bolognese sauce, Cockeye seems to have almost hand-selected a diverse range beverages, from the standard Coca-Cola to Jamaican Ginger Beer, to go with any of their dishes. Drinks are priced well: less than you'd expect from a restaurant, but on-par with what you might pay in a grocery store. But all prices are reflected like that; a standard meal will cost you a little less than you'd pay in a chain restaurant downtown--and you'll get larger portions here, no doubt. The drinks are enough of a reason to seek out Cockeye BBQ, but their food knocks the competition out of the water. As an enthusiast of smoked meats and bbq, I don't think that the competition is even close. I'm guilty of seeking out a good brisket, and their hand-held shaved brisket is and has been my go-to, but I've had everything from a smoked reuben (which was great with their cajun fries), a little-bit-of-everything mess plate, to their "two bones and a slice." The bread is soft and fresh. The meat is juicy, smoky, and tender. The ribs fall off the bone. In the six or so times I've been there, I've never had one dish that was full of fat or gristle, which is a much-welcomed rarity for this type of restaurant. The meat is worth the price of admission, but the 'real deal' at Cockeye BBQ is the sauce. Cockeye's standard barbeque sauce is a perfect blend of spicy, smoky, sweet and tangy. It has a taste and texture of honey. Nashville has their spicy sauce, Kentucky has their smoky sauce, Memphis has their sweet sauce... but Cockeye's sauce has defined a new flavor: Youngstown barbeque. It's a new breed, and it's as diverse as the Mahoning Valley. Outsiders comment on the grit that folks have around here, and this sauce reflects all of it. For those seeking a little extra kick, they offer a spicy variant, and they have other inventive bbq sauces as well, including a mustard sauce that's every bit as unique as it is flavorful. For the at-home enthusiast, their rubs and sauces are sold in jars. Another unique reason to love Cockeye BBQ is their 'clothesline specials' that are offered in addition to the standard menu. Crafty, creative items with their signature spin have included poutine to the aforementioned smoked reuben. For the enthusiast who likes something aside from the standard fare, the clothesline always has 'something different.' Not many start-ups are given a standing chance to "make it" in this area. This especially goes for local restaurants who have plenty of competition, but Cockeye BBQ certainly will make it. Their food is delicious, fairly priced, and dining in offers a great atmosphere. Cockeye BBQ buys many of their ingredients from local vendors, so they're helping other "small guys" succeed in our corner of the rust belt. Their attention to detail is all 'blue collar,' and even in a location just outside of downtown Warren, they stay remarkably (and understandably) busy. I wonder how long they can stick around, but only because I wonder if they'll have to move; before this particular brand of food, its sauce, the small-batch mentality and attention to customer service becomes mainstream, and the crew has to adopt a larger and possibly more central location. If you're in the valley, and you haven't already, stop by this place. It's a winner, if not the next big thing to come out of our valley. read more

I went for the first time yesterday. OMG the food is delicious. We had no idea of what to order, but the clerk she was sooooo helpful, she first asked if we wanted a hand held or an actual meal, then kept on going getting our likes and dislikes and we each got just what we were hungry for. I got the spare rib meal, and they just fell off the bone. I normally don't like hush puppies, but I'd eat these any day of the week. This is definately our BBQ joint from now on. We were first time customers today 3/26/21. I ordered a one meat dinner with turkey, green beans and cole slaw. I rec'd 4 slices of turkey from an incredibly salty institutional turkey roll. Not real turkey, not shredded, not smoked, just salt. The green beans were mushy and covered in a butter sauce so thick that I couldn't taste any bean flavor. Disgusting. The cole slaw was " o.k." The barbeque sauce was somewhat peppery, but that is a very individual preference for people. I literally threw my dinner away. I do not recommend this restaurant. read more

What an amazing experience at this local joint from the moment I walked in the assistant manager Ariel took great care of me at the register, advising me as a first-timer. Even something as simple as walking to the napkin dispenser an employee quickly pulled out three napkins to hand them to me, kudos to the owner and management for holding such a high standard.
