My husband and I drive a hour to eat at Cockeye BBQ! We love love love this place. The owners are wonderful. The staff is amazing . The food is also amazing. Clean, nice decor ! Since I love plants I love how there's one plant that is growing all over a pipe on the ceiling. They have a lot of cool beers and pop in a bottle to choose from. The deep fried grits is amazing ! Mmm I could eat that all the time. Now there's a ice cream store around on the side to enjoy desert after. I love family ran restaurants. Oh Em Gee. I was driving between Cleveland and Youngstown looking for a place to eat when I spy this restaurant with very high ratings on Yelp. Every single one of those 5 star ratings is deserved. Cockeye barbecue is a great place for at least a dozen reasons. Fast service, owner at the counter processing orders, Friendly and helpful staff, efficient food delivery system, the best brisket I've had in a long time, packed house full of happy customers, charming Decor and branding. I know that's only nine reasons, but if I went back again, I'm sure I could find three more. This is worth the hour drive from Cleveland. If you're looking for great BBQ, this is a place to consider. Tried this place for the first time. Driven by it several times over the past 3 years or so. It's true BBQ. Can't wait to stop in again while I visit my family but I'll grab some to go while on my way back to Cleveland. I didn't see wings on the menu but I see them on reviews so they have them but just not on our visit. I opted for a patty melt - it was huge but not a ton of flavor. Onion rings were bangin...... I brought some back with me so my partner (from North Carolina and Oklahoma) could try it and realize that Hill Country BBQ is only pretty good and somehow it all accidentally ended up missing. We found Cockeye BBQ a few months ago and we are addicted. We can't go anywhere else without wanting to go back to Cockeye. My favorite is the pulled pork sandwich with the toasted bun, but now I've tried the cajin catfish and shrimp and now I'm hooked. They have specials every month, like the tenderloin or mashed potatoes that will knock your socks off. Seriously, you will love this place. The best is the ice cream place next door, which is ran by their son I think, and he is a prodigy when it comes to ice cream. I'll be there tomorrow at 11am for more! read more

EAT HERE! My husband is very particular about his BBQ being from KC, and we consider ourselves foodies generally. He said the brisket and ribs here were some of the best he's had, and I agree, The meat was so tender and flavorful, but still held together for a nice bite to it. The sauces were all so good, and we bought both their seasoning and rub to take home to Arizona. We also had the hush puppies, Cajun fries, okra, Mac n cheese, and cheesy potatoes- all so good. We left totally stuffed because the portions were nice sized and we couldn't put the forks down! We would have tried dessert or the home made ice cream but we were just too full. First off don't get me wrong this is not a negative review. I thought the ribs could be a little more tender. Other than that everything was excellent. They have many delicious sides to choose from, and many sauces that I have never even heard of but were all sooo good. We had a craving for BBQ and drove up to Cockeye from Poland as we had heard such good things about them. It was well worth the 30+ minute trip. We each got a 2 meats/2 sides so we could maximize what we tried. Ended up with pulled pork, brisket, sausage and catfish with mac and cheese, cole slaw, baked beans and corn casserole as sides. Everything was really tasty and some of the better BBQ I have had anywhere and definitely the best in NE Ohio. The sausage was the best bite of the 4 things we tried with the pulled pork a close second. Our serving of pork was a little small as compared to the other 3 portions and I really wished it had been a tad bit bigger to share. Of the sides, the beans and casserole were the stars, the other two were good but nothing that you could not get elsewhere. Next visit we want to try the ribs as they looked great! The exterior of the building doesn't grab your attention but we're here for the food, right? When we walked in, we were promptly greeted by the super-friendly counter staff. Acknowledging we were first timers, the staff went over the menu, daily specials, & explained we were to obtain our beverages, place & pay for our order, then take a table where our food would be brought to us. The price points are average. The dining room is small but clean and decorated in a southern BBQ motif. Even the background music reflects a rural southern charm. Six or seven minutes later, we received our order in carryout containers. I ordered the "2 meat" dinner choosing sausage & turkey. Cheesy potatoes & corn casserole were my sides. The cheesy potatoes were excellent! The sausage has some spice which sneaks up on you. The turkey & corn casserole were a tad bit dry but nothing to get upset over. My wife had three ribs, baked potato & coleslaw. All were very good. The BBQ sauce has a blackberry base which some may find too sweet. Both of us liked it but anyone expecting a Sweet Baby Ray's type of sauce may be disappointed. I wish I had left room to try the strawberry-rhubarb pie. Overall, a good experience! read more

Holy moly, this place is astounding! I tried it for the first time less than a month ago and was totally blown away. My sister and her fiancee ordered takeout for the family and I was having a hard time trying to decide between the pulled pork, brisket melt and turkey, then I saw I could have all three in one with the Barnyard "handheld" sandwich, which is misleading because it was so massive I had to use a fork and knife. It was quite a challenge to put it all down, but I somehow managed to finish it on top of the onion rings I had on the side. The portions are very generous in relation to the price and I wouldn't be afraid to call this the best barbeque I've had in northeast Ohio. Decided not to eat in and just do take out. I had 2 meat and 2 sides (pulled pork and brisket) and it was fantastic! Sides were great too... everything tasted homemade; as if you were out at a family members home for a cookout and everyone made their best dish. The absolute only problem was that the meat had some sauce on it. Got the three meat plate with a side of burnt ends. Ribs were good, brisket was fine, pulled pork was moist with a good chew. Enjoyed the sauces - sweet and spicy. The burnt ends weren't burnt. they had barely been cooked. So tough I bit down as hard as I could, grabbed it with my hand and pulled so hard that the chunk of fat slipped out of my mouth, out of my fingers, and flew onto the floor. They needed probably another 24 hours in the smoker. The coleslaw was nice crisp cabbage with a flavorless milky white liquid on it. I was expecting/hoping for a nice vinegar slaw to counter the sweet in the BBQ sauces, but it was utterly bland. Given the positive reviews, I really wanted to like this place more, but messing up those two key dishes means it's only OK in my book. read more
