Wow, this was a pleasant surprise! My husband was given a gift certificate to Coco Bistro and we finally found a night to give it a try. We were skeptical because we saw that it was previously called Cafe Havana...and it just seemed like maybe they slapped some new paint and changed the name to get new reviews. Boy, were we wrong. It was a rainy night, so when we first drove into the parking lot, we both thought, oh geez, a dressed up diner. When we entered the doors, we were surprised to see a well-appointed outdoor patio. Up the stairs to the main restaurant;cozy, warm, absolutely lovely! Staff was friendly and efficient and got us seated right away. Thankfully we had made reservations because the place was packed! It's loud. It's expensive. It is Soooooooo good!!!!! I have to say, the staff was exceptional. We were so well cared for and the wait staff worked like a well rehearsed dance troop. The waiter would leave, the bus-people would attend to water, bringing food, etc., and all with a smile and lovely personality. I love when an establishment's staff is happy. It tells me that they are passionate, and take pride in their job, which is a positive reflection on management. We shared the coconut shrimp and crab/avocado salad for apps. The shrimp live up to their reputation-crispy, not greasy at all, well seasoned, and cooked to perfection. The sauce was on the sweet side for both of us, so we added a squeeze of lime from the crab salad-perfect! The crab salad was expensive at $24 but it was a healthy portion of super fresh, delicately seasoned crab, perfect avocado and accouterment of mango/tomato salsa. Honestly, I was full at this point, but food was still coming... Entrees: I had the "Island Salmon." I asked for it cooked medium and subbed out the black beans for veggies. I had low expectations because I can't remember the last time I had well-cooked salmon, but I love it so, and was willing to give it a shot WOW! I don't know how they did it. the outside was seared to a crisp outer crust, the inside was moist, juicy and cooked to perfection. Deftly seasoned with a hint of lemon atop a non-intrusive dollop of pesto. Served with a heaping mound of coconut rice that was SO good. Not sweet or tacky or gloppy. Just perfectly cooked rice with a smooth finish and fragrance of coconut. Veggies were simple zucchini and broccoli. Again, cooked to still have a fresh snap and tasty. Husband had the Perino Asada. I don't eat meat, so I didn't try it, but he was oohing and aahing as much as I was. He said the meat was so tender, it fell apart, and the flavor was deep and magnificent. He pretty much cleaned the plate. For dessert, we shared the coconut pie with vanilla Icecream. It was different than what we expected. Almost more like a flan texture than a custard, but very light and not overly sweet. The crust was also light and airy with a hint of salt that opened the palate. We ordered two coffee drinks: peppermint patty and buttered rum. They were both so delectable, we would take a sip, and swap! I forgot to mention; with our meal I had two glasses of the California Chardonnay, and my husband had two martinis--the cucumber mint and a traditional. Both were exceptional. As an app, we ordered nachos & guac, and for the entree, I ordered Arroz con pollo. It was good- the portions are perfect;not too much, and it left room for dessert! We had coffee & we all shared the chocolate lava & ice cream- it was sooo good! Very rich, so I definitely recommend sharing it. The service was great too & the ambiance was trendy. I'll be honest I'm very Cuban and I am super pleased with the entire experience I had here at Cafe Havana. The parking lot is large enough to park, the inside is very inviting warm and tropical feeling. The doors lead you upstairs to a more intimate date setting with a fabulous bar, dining area and side rooms for larger parties. I am very impressed with the bar area, good vibes, clean and clean smelling, wallpaper with green palms, two TVs and beautiful candlelight. Let's get down to the dinner portion. The drinks- fantastic, the apps, seriously couldn't get enough they were to die for, the dinner was delicious and authentic, it does have that Puerto Rican added twist, and the most beloved cuban deserts such as Flan, dulce de leche, and more! Our first impression was what a large restaurant. When you first walk in, a beautiful semi-outdoor patio you can eat on. Proceed inside and up the stairs for the bar and main dining areas. A little darker than we like in a restaurant. Appetizers: The Mango wings were flavorful, with a perfect crunch when you bite into them. The Meatball Wellington was large, and excellent, served on a bed of red sauce. And the Crab Cakes garnished with guacamole and Mango - delicious. They just needed to be slightly more fried on the outside, for an outer crunch. For dinner, I had the Seafood Mofongo, which was excellent. My husband had the steak, which he didn't enjoy. While the food was good, we ordered a Cuban sandwich and were handed a burger and gaslit by our server into believing the burger was a Cuban sandwich with the wrong bread, she came w the bill afterwards and apologized saying she in fact did give us a burger but that hopefully she "put us onto something new" didn't offer to make it right in any way, she was clearly new because anyone who's ever even served a Cuban sandwich knows it's pork and pork is always well done and she came back and asked us what temp we wanted the sandwich 10 mins after we ordered it, first red flag I guess. The food was amazing. Steak was perfect texture and flavor. Brunch menu is just marvelous. Kelvin our waiter was attentive and very nice. He catered to our add ons and substitutions! Last night my husband and I arrived here around 7ish, our reservations were for 7:15, the nice hostess seated us within a few min of that time. Not too much has changed in the area we were seated and I wish I would have mentioned it was a special occasion bc I if I remember correctly when I came here when it was cafe havana the seating in the back room towards the bar area is nicer. Decor and ambiance was meh very plain it actually reminds me of when I vacationed in myrtle beach with my family in the early 00s, as which is a shame bc you can do so much with this location it's a unique space with a lot more aesthetic potential. Food though is spot on and that's always most important ! Food was spectacular and made the night all on its own. To start we ordered the chicken empanadas which we've had before when it was under the restaurant old name and they were fantastic as always. I tried their 43 berry margarita and that was delicious as well! For dinner I ordered the carne asada and my husband ordered the skirt steak. Both were incredible ! Cooked and seasoned perfectly to medium like we asked. Then we treated ourselves to dessert, in which normally we get cheesecake but we went out on a limb and tried their tres leches. I'm now calling it their "magic cake" seriously I'm still thinking about it! Absolutely the best dessert I've had ever and I'm not a big dessert person. It really takes me a lot to say that lol. We were excited to go down and check it out since they renovated it and since we were informed at our table whenever we are ready to go down we will be greeted with a on the house mojito. We were only to be greeted with the locked door and no free mojito. The DJ was late and while to others maybe this isn't a big deal but to a couple who is not normally out this late if you weren't here on time we weren't staying. We left by 8:45pm with the DJ still not showed up. Why is this ok? Don't put what time your event starts if your entertainment can't get there on time. I would have never signed up if this was the case. They made us wait upstairs when they probably could have let us wait in the lounge downstairs with the on the house mojito and they could have distracted the situation a lot better and maybe waiting wouldn't have been so bad like maybe an extra drink on the house get us feeling ok and softening the situation but then again the DJ still has to set up and that can take a while. So what was the point of coming over to our table and letting us know we can go down but then we can't ? I was super disappointed with the way my experience ended here, you don't find too many places like this on Long Island that actually have a separate lounge space for dancing and enjoying music like this. We are a young couple in our 30s trying to find new fun things to do while we don't have kids. Hoping if I give this lounge thing another chance next time it works out. We went to coco bistro for the first time last night and we were impressed with everything overall. The staff were so friendly and professional from the hostesses to the servers. Our particular waiter was Nick and he was excellent. He was professional , attentive and even offered us some suggestions when we were undecided on what to order. The food was absolutely delicious. Here's the Scoop: I brought my family here to celebrate Fathers Day. I was not happy. As we enter they tell us that the menu is limited and that it will be $68 per person. It was now 7pm I had made reservations and at this late hour where could we go. Begrudgingly we were escorted to the dining room. I was so upset because this needed to be said when I placed my reservation. It took me at least an 1/2 hr to cool down. I didn't want to completely ruin my honey's experience so I quickly regrouped. We ordered our meals. They arrived hot and the service friendly. I learned a valuable lesson during the pandemic and that is everyone is trying to get over and you must ask lots of questions because dining out is not the same. We've been to Coco Bistro for happy hours few times and really enjoyed the drinks and bar apps. We were looking for a place to take the family for brunch for my wife's birthday and a search surprisingly brought up CB. We checked out the impressive brunch menu and decided to book it. It was a great brunch experience! The majority of the family went for breakfast, and everyone really enjoyed their meal, whether it was the coquito French toast, the eggs Benedict, the berry waffles or the chocolate chip pancakes. I chose the skirt steak sandwich which was fantastic-a large portion with the great flavors of plantains and chimichuri. Julian was our server and was professional and very. attentive. He didn't miss a beat. The best waiter we've had in recent memory. We definitely recommend and will be going back to explore the rest of the menu! read more

My friends and I joke about how every Long Island restaurant's reviews are so inflated compared to Queens, and ask each other is it a 'Long Island 4/5 star,' because that equals a Queens 2 star. Anyways I digress. Came to Cafe Havana at the recommendation of my friends mother, and figured why not? I love Cuban food and I must admit I did not have high expectations. I'm so glad I was pleasantly surprised! The restaurant itself is super cute, has nice ambiance and everyone was friendly. My friends and I started off with coconut shrimp- DELICIOUS, guava wings-really good, and totstones rellenos- delicious and unique! We all had cocktails and everyone enjoyed theirs (first and second rounds ) I had the skirt steak which was so flavorful and wonderful- albeit a bit salty, but Latin food always has a saltier flavor. My other friend had the permit which was also very good and thankfully not dry, my other friend had the crane asada and she enjoyed it. Last but not least my friend had the sweet potato Piccadillo, which I seriously like what are you thinking? But she absolutely loved it. Then we decided to switch seats at the bar because we were in the middle of servers getting drinks for the patrons at the table. The two young men behind the bar decided it was ok to come at our end and mix the drinks as a joke giggling and laughing . We decided not to order dinner and left. Absolutely fabulous! I was working in the area and meet my boss and a colleague here. The restaurant is gorgeous as you walk in. They have a very cool patio. Dining room was also well decorated. The food was amazing! We ordered the Coconut Shrimp, Sorullos and the Guacamole to start. All were great. For dinner I had the Ropa Vieja. The meat just melted into your mouth. My boss had the Wedge salad and it was huge! My colleague had the Pernil, which is a slow roasted pork shoulder. Again, meat was very tender and not overly salty, which can easily happen to this dish. Overall a great experience. I'll start off by saying the food is amazing and the service was extremely satisfying. Definitely a 5-star for sure. Drinks were also very flavorful and menu carried all types of tastes and interests to peak anyone's interest and culinary delights. So why a 4-star review? It may be minor details to most, but the fine line which defines a main-stream eatery to a top notch establishment. Here goes: 1. Couldn't find any pics on their website for the look or ambience of the place. The gallery only showed 3 pics (1 drink, 1 meat and 1 seafood dish). I had no idea if I was about to find a food truck at that location. I'd hope they revamp their website so people get a better idea of the dining room area, outdoor area and any additional places they have. 2. Maybe the reason they don't have pictures of their establishment is because it's dated and could use a facelift. Also, the two fake palm trees in front of their parking area looks silly. Their inside "outdoor" dining could also use a major overhaul. Maybe that was why they didn't seat anyone there unless you actually requested to dine there. Get a landscape designer in there. I have someone in kind that would spruce up that area. 3. And this bothered me the most in which I almost had it ruin an amazing dining experience. The height of chairs and tables seem to not be standard size. I'm an average sized man and my date was also average sized. The first thing we noticed was that the height of the table was too high. We chuckled and were going to ask for high chairs. Maybe it's a minor detail to some, but when you can't rest your arms on the table or feed yourself because you have to reach up for food, it was annoying. I felt like a scene in "Honey I shrink the diners" or how a child would react when sitting at a table. Now I understand why they toss their dishes. In conclusion: food, choices and service was top notch. You won't be disappointed and the portions are very generous. As for minor details, this could easily be one of my favorite places on the Island. So grab some yellow pages books or seat pillows and head there. The food and service can't be beat. read more

I have only had a handful of items on the menu since I am vegan but the handful I've had are delicious. I would understand if we had entered with 20 minutes to close? But 1 whole hour? We had been driving from Selden, excited because we had heard very good things about the place. I'd been dying to return to CH for some time. COVID had gotten in the way so I felt that now that I'm vaccinated, the time had arrived. My experience was very pleasant and the food... I mean... the food remains top notch! I did find a few of snags this time around that I had never dealt with before at this awesome restaurant. One was that the drinks were... meh. To be clear, for the cost of a drink at CH... I mean; c'mon! Bruh! Second, was that the pace at the bar was set at snail pace; it took forever just to get my first drink even though the place was virtually empty. My wife, who gets their Hemingway Mojitos and loves them, found herself thinking, "what happened after COVID?" They're rusty, I guess. And I must say... while I get that costs had to go up due to the shellacking the industry has received; our waiter kept pushing stuff at us like a used cars salesman pushes a scam! I mean... he kept going on and on about the different taste between patron and agave tequilas and how patron just gives that "extra kick" (yeah; to your wallet)! My friend totally bought into that crap and then felt like a soccer after the fact. LOL He tried that on me. Um, yeah... he tried. Yet, he kept on pushing other stuff.
