One of the best donuts I've ever had. Rivals the quality of Blue Star for half the price. Not quite as wacky and adventurous as Blue Star or Voodoo, but the donut itself more than made up for the lack of unique dressing. I had the chocolate glazed with shredded coconut topping. The outside was crisp, the inside was soft and just sweet enough, a perfectly cooked donut. It was cheap too! Just a bit over a dollar for one donut. I also had an iced coffee, and while it wasn't the best I've had, I can't be too hard on them for it, it was just iced coffee like you'd get anywhere, but it didn't bring ruin my experience or anything. I've been interested in trying these donuts for years, but they wee always closed when I happened to be downtown or near one. But alas, I was finally chosen to taste one of these elusive treats one blissful afternoon! The Safeway by my house use to have delicious donuts cooked to perfection for a small price, then a new baker took over and it all went downhill. I'm big on the textures of my sweets, and I especially don't like burnt bottoms on my donuts. The whole donut should be soft and fluffy, which was exactly what these were. They were so light, yet so fulfilling! Voodoo Donuts is frequently hailed as the king of donuts out here, but all the wacky ingredient combos in the world could never make up for quality donuts. Donuts that aren't too sweet, improperly cooked, or stale. To top it off, they were rather cheaply priced ($1-$2), which I did not expect. Will be hopefully coming back for more! read more

Yum!!! The shop is super cute: it's very bright and happy with kind employees and donuts that are as beautiful as they are delicious. I highly recommend their mochi donuts: I can't pick a favorite, but the black sesame, cinnamon sugar, strawberry, and chocolate flavors are all wonderful. I had to get off the MAX to try this place & was glad I did. On the way back from the zoo, we stopped at the PGE park for a snack & was very surprised to find how cute it was inside. The donuts were fresh & delightful. I had the chocolate glaze & the cake was airy. My son had the chocolate sprinkles & he gobbled it up in under 1 minute. My husband had the boston creme & the old fashion chocolate & he loved both of them. People were very friendly & pets were allowed inside. I was glad we made the stop to support this local business. I suggest that you offer newspapers, magazine racks, flat screen, or a wireless hot spot, so that people would want to stay for a little bit longer. Thanks to the stranger who pointed us to this place when she saw us standing outside a closed Blue Star Donuts. They don't have crazy flavors but the texture of their donuts are perfect and they are not overwhelmingly sweet. I got the lavender donut and lavender hot chocolate and loved both of them! Not very perfumey at all but you can definitely taste the lavender. I also tried my boyfriend's apple fritter and it had a crispy outside but very soft inside. Come here if you're looking for quality and tasty classic donuts and great coffee/hot chocolate that are not overpriced. read more

Fabulously fresh and delicious donuts with just enough variety to keep me interested. The staff here are always friendly and move the line quickly. My favorite is a tie between the maple bar and the lavender glazed. Their yeast donuts are so fluffy and soft without having that 'shortening' flavor. The Coffee that was being served at Coco Donuts near Providence Park is what brought me In to Coco Donuts. It is Taaasty. I did NOT get a Doughnut. They were Out of my favorites when I was there at about 1:35 PM. This Neighborhood has changed A LOT since I first moved to Portland, Oregon in 2001. Also, when I was inside Coco Donuts, I noted that they had Honey,... should you prefer that as your sweetener of Choice in your Coffee. I walked Downtown with my Coffee, I felt like taking a walk on that afternoon. It's not THAT far to the Central Library anyway. The MAX and a few Buses drive right Past this Coco Donuts location as well. The best thing about Coco Donuts? The close proximity to the MAX platform at Jeld-Wen Field. If I'm on track to get to the office a little early, I can hop off the train, stuff my face with a tasty donut, and catch the next train to Workville, bing, bang, boom. The decor of the place is a little too fussy for me. Donut shops should be kind of dingy and grody. I mean, you're taking your life in your hands eating those delicious little grease balls, so the shop should look a little hazardous to your health. I'm just sayin'. I've had coffee and a doughnut at their smaller, very cool outlet in downtown Portland. Even though this is much closer to my house (just three blocks away), I've never visited or had their delicious coffee or doughnuts. i have now rectified that mistake and can see this as a go-to place very much for the future. When I first walked in, I was amazed at how immaculately clean AND attractive the shop is as a whole. I like the color scheme, found it very relaxing, and everybody there at the time was relaxed and just chatting or reading or working purposefully behind the counter. I was greeted immediately by a friendly behind-the-counter young lady who took my order and got everything out to me correctly and quickly. I had my usual buttermilk bar (perfectly made with soft inside slightly crisp exterior) and a cup of Americano (Stumptown) and relaxed and read the paper. I don't take the paper at home, so to have the time to read it and have a cup of coffee is one of life's sweet little luxuries. As I was finishing up the coffee and reading the paper, a group of several young men (15 or 20 I think) came in. They were very polite and quite noise-free. Another young woman came out to help and without breaking a sweat the two counter people filled their orders and the young men were right back out the door again. Kudos to these two young ladies for doing such a fine job of serving a large-ish group. Whether you're a neighbor like myself or you're passing through on MAX and need a break or a treat, do stop by for friendly service and excellent coffee and doughnuts. read more

BEWARE !!! Coco Doughnuts uses a credit card processing company, Square, that may put your personal information at risk! We used a brand new, never used before, AMEX card to purchase a few breakfast items at Coco. Almost immediately our card number was used in Toronto, Canada. Funny since we live in Oregon. Then, the email account that Coco emailed our receipt to, via Square, just happened to be our iTunes email address, had an attempt to reset out login info. Coincidence? I think not. Yesterday my family and I were a bit blue (see what I did there?) with our other Portland donut shop stop. We consulted Yelp to research other places to appease our donut obsession other than Voodoo. Coco Donuts came up with their 4.5 rating at their 6th Street location. Excited by the prospect of more donuts ahead, we stopped by the 6th street location after an afternoon spent at the Alder food trucks. It was less than a 10 minute walk away. Unfortunately when we arrived, around 2:30ish, all the donuts were sold out. n00b move, I guess they sell out frequently. The friendly employee was kind enough to call up the other shop on 17th to see if there were any donuts left. They were running out too and only had half a pan left, but agreed to hold their last three raised donuts for us - a chocolate bar, a chocolate donut with peanuts on top, and a glazed lavendar. Woohoo! We ended up adding a glazed cake donut topped with crumbled donut to our order when we arrived. All the donuts were fresh, even with it being close to 3 in the afternoon. The donuts were fairly priced at less than $2. And the employees were star quality, they took the extra time to cut up our donuts so it would be easier to share. An added plus, no long tourist line! A nice little donut shop in a pretty tough location. They have a great selection of basic donuts, all of them fresh and airy and pretty. I had a bavarian creme filled, it was as good as I would have hoped. The right amount of creme and soft, fresh dough. The glazed ring I bought was also delicious. Fluffy and sweet, just as you'd hope. The lady working there was very friendly and happy to talk about her business and the neighborhood. She was sincerely happy to see me in her shop and I have a feeling she'll remember me if I return any time soon. Since I live just across the street, it shouldn't take too long. I'm just going to start out by saying that I am not an adventurous donut lover. I prefer the classics. Give me a glazed old fashioned or maple bar any day over some very strange, cereal-encrusted object that is supposed to pass for a donut. I know, I know. It's heretical to admit such things in Stumptown but there you have it. Classics rule and with that, if you're going to make no-fuss donuts...you had better be good at it. Yay! After seeing so many going out of business signs, It is nice to see new places opening up around the neighborhood. I stopped in on a walk downtown just to give a try. The donut I had was very tasty - fresh and light. I am not a fan of the heavy, dense donuts that you can get other places around town. Just give me a simple, well-made donut and I will be a happy girl. Unfortunately, I only had one dollar cash and they don't take cards. (I asked the lady who was there and she said they didn't plan on getting a credit card machine set up...she said it was a way to keep donut prices lower.) However what I hate is that every time I walk in, they're out of donuts. Gone. Empty. Zip. Zero. NONE! They're called coco DONUTS. 3 out of 5 visits there are no donuts. I arrived here at 2:30 pm in the afternoon, and they close at 4. The staff member was really awesome and said they have a $2 deal for a small coffee and a donut, so I latched on to that idea and stuck with it. The staff member was actually really nice and cutting deals for everybody who walked into the store for the last hour in an effort to get rid of his daily donut supply. The coffee is stumptown, so it was inherently good. I didn't have any special drinks there, so I can't comment on the quality of the barista. The donuts were good - they didn't seem spectacular to me, but I only had a chocolate bar so maybe I'm not eating what they're famous for. It was a nice, quiet place to sit and read. Possibly even get some studying done. Unfortunately the hours don't accomodate people who can only stop by after work. Actually, that might be a good thing because who needs donuts/sugar rush in the afternoon - keep that for the morning time! bottom line - i'd come back if i was in the area, but it didn't strike any fancy for me. read more

Forget Blue Star. Forget Voodoo. These are the PDX doughnuts you should be consuming. Not only are they cheaper than Blue Star, but they taste much better. Many of your traditional varieties, plus a few fun new twists on things. Their apple fritter is a beautiful braided pastry, instead of the chopped up blob that most other places serve (as delicious as it may be - let's be honest, most aren't pretty). First star: they are conveniently located just next to the MAX stop at Jeld-Wen formerly known as PGE Park. Second star: one does not have to stand in line for a couple hours with tourists because Food Network and Man vs. Food have yet to make a visit. Third star: they serve Stumptown coffee. Stopped in while running errands for a half dozen. Woman at the counter was super nice, and the donuts were possibly my favorite in the area. We noticed that they're not as dense as some places, more light a fluffy with an appropriate crisp on the outside. I think the maple old fashioned was the favorite. The donut itself was the perfect texture, and the maple frosting tasted like real maple, rather than some sugar coating with a hint of fake maple flavoring. We'll be back. read more

Because I'm a mad man soccer fan that often follows my team around, I've made the trip to Portland two years in a row now. The first time in July '11, I first made the touristy stop at Voodoo and overpaid for an alright doughnut. I inquired with some Timbers Army friends of mine that while Voodoo was cool, where they went instead. The next day, I was outside Jeld Wen and the MAX station at Coco and the love affair began then. My friends are cute, they all bundled together on Friday morning to wait in the line to pay their cash to the doughnut nazi at Voodoo. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the downtown free zone, on the other side of the red line, I was waltzing into Coco with my card and head held high. Decided to live a little, buying an old fashioned glazed to snack on later on in the day and a Coco and maple bar for right then. Alongside some of the wonderful Stumptown coffee they serve, I picked my usual spot from last year right next to the door and proceeded to om nom on my sugary treats. The coco was terrific, coco powder and chocolate chunks galore on a cake doughnut. Mixed in with a slosh of coffee, pure unadulterated food love. The maple bar was fantastic as well, no need for bacon on this bad boy, he was good alone. The old fashioned later on was perfect for what it was as well, even several hours later. I think my friends were still in line at Voodoo at this point though, poor souls. If only we had more doughnut shops like this in Kansas City. It was a rainy day a few months ago & I was a bit blue. I had passed the Coco Donuts downtown many a time but this time I stopped in. It almost closing time & few donuts were left. I mentioned to the gal at the counter it was my 1st time there. She had me pick out a donut, put it in a bag, grabbed another, and after putting it in the bag as well said they were on the house & to come back if I liked them. Her kindness made my day. But it was the donuts that have kept me coming back! The chocolate cake donut with chocolate glaze is now my go-to but all the donuts are great. I like that the cake donuts are actually cake like. I like that not once have I had that weird greasy layer to the roof of my mouth all day after eating a donut. I like that these donuts are simple & gratifying & quality. Even the last box of the day is better than a fresh donut at other places. Yes there is that one other place downtown with the pink boxes but Portlander's know they're not so great. Yes there's that one other place downtown with the gourmet label & prices to match. But for real good donuts that are special, not because of gimmicks, but because of quality & a touch of flair, I HIGHLY RECCOMMED Coco donuts. I discovered this place entirely by accident (I was riding the Max Red Line and stupidly got off on the wrong stop), but I'm so glad I did because it's probably my new go-to place for donuts. Coco Donuts offers a wide variety of traditional flavors for a relatively cheap price. The donuts aren't too greasy or doughy or messy, they're made just right and are perfect for on-the-go eating. The service has always been quick and efficient too. The building itself is somewhat small - not in a cramped way, but in a cozy sort of way. The area is clean, nice-looking, and a has a comfortable couch where you can relax while eating a donut and drinking coffee. The peppermint hot chocolate is pretty great as well (not sure if this is a full-time menu item or if it's only seasonal, so don't hold me accountable if you go there and it isn't available.) read more

So the doughnuts are very good, but every other aspect (other than convenient location) is kind of meh. There's no coffee shop vibe whatsoever so you're pretty much grabbing and going or fighting for one of the 4 seats they have. Also, the coffee was pretty underwhelming. I've lived in PDX for over a year now, I'm not just flipping my thumbs up "because Stumptown" anymore. There was no iced coffee option either, one of my biggest personal pet peeves for this kind of place. On the one hand, yes, the doughnuts are good. On the other hand, it's really hard to screw up fresh-baked doughnuts (though Dunkin Donuts are definitely onto something.) I feel like this place is getting a lot of credit for just not being VooDoo doughnuts when honestly, some of VooDoo's less dong-shaped gimmick donuts actually match up pretty well against Coco's stock. That being said, I get it. This place does have a lot going for it by comparison. Particularly the lack of tourists forming 10-mile lines and no g-strings with a doughnut shop's logo on the vaginal area hanging framed on the wall. And yet, at least VooDoo is open after the sun comes up (if the sun hypothetically did come up in PDX.) Coco is pretty much cleaned out by 3pm. In summary, good for what they do, but lots of room for improvement in almost all ancillary areas. Zeus forbid you have to fight to get through a hoard of football hooligans to get one of these doughnuts and they have the same problems as VooDoo but presented differently. read more

The donuts are cheaper than some of the other donut chains in Portland. My major complaint is that they are not open on Sunday! That is the best day to drink coffee and eat donuts. read more
