I'm usually not a huge donut person, but I really enjoyed the smaller size of these. It made it easy to try several different flavors without feeling like it was too much, and I loved the variety. I also tried their chai matcha special and really enjoyed it! I will definitely bring friends or family who are visiting to try these out!

Texture wise, between the density of the brioche vs old fashioned. They hold up the best after a day; in fact, the employee said that she liked it better after a day and I could see why - the oil perhaps keeps it not stale and fades away a little. Chocolate bergamot old fashioned: my favorite. Just the way I like my old fashioned as crisp fried exterior with an indulgent dense interior. More dense than the cake donuts. The flavor was deep but not too sweet with a glaze. After a day, it wasn't stale but the crispiness faded. They do TGTG and I would totally do this if I lived in Portland.

A line outside is a common sight, together with a guard who controls the limit of customers from entering. Inside, you'll see merchandise and a huge donut on the ceiling. Various donuts are displayed in revolving glass cases. Also the prices vary too, depending on the donut. We bought 4 to try at the hotel and we came to the consensus that the apple fritters $4.99 were the best and they were huge. It had a slight crisp to it where the sugar caramelized and although sweet, it was delicious with a cup of tea/coffee. We managed to make another trip and bought a box for the plane. And it was still good the next day when left on the counter. Chilling it will melt the sugar. Instead, I opted for the Mango Tango doughnut. It was good and super sweet. I should've gotten some of the favorites too but held myself back. One thing I really enjoyed was the spinning carousel displays featuring a variety of specialty doughnuts. Fortunately, I didn't encounter a long line during my visit. The staff was friendly and moved things along quickly. The shop itself is pretty much standing-room-only, with no tables inside, but there's a large plaza and alley area right outside where you can sit or stand and enjoy your doughnuts. There's lot of art on the walls and a huge doughnut art piece hanging from the ceiling. Just outside the front door is the Ankeny Alley Stage, a small outdoor stage where buskers, bands, and other performers provide live entertainment. A nearby sign features a QR code with the performance schedule. During my visit, a musician was riffing on his guitar. Seemed as though he was warming up and he was really good! Definitely a fun and uniquely Portland stop--and of course, I'm glad to have experienced the original!

There's a cavernous gap right in the center that's filled with a sickly sweet melted sugar syrup. It's unpleasantly sweet and very cloying. The puffed and filled area is large enough that it compresses the other layers so the kouign amann is dense. I've never had a kouign amann quite this sweet before. (3/5) Meyer Lemon Olive Oil Cake with Thyme ($5.50) - This cake is so moist and rich, thick and dense, fatty and rich, that it feels like I"m eating a slab of butter. It's not too sweet and has an excellent high quality blueberry fragrance, creating an exceptionally strong blueberry taste. The jam is not too thick and is somewhat syrupy from sugar. The donut itself is really soft and extremely airy. It's the fluffiest donut I've eaten in a long time. (5/5) Raspberry Rose Cruffin ($8.50) - This pastry has some fun dehydrated raspberries sprinkled right on top of a light and fluffy cream that's not too sweet. Their donuts are really yummy but found out this morning that you can only get 3 donuts of any one kind of donut. If I am buying donuts and want 4 twist donuts - i can only get 3? I get that they want to keep a variety, but if someone is willing to pay for and wants donuts - you really are going to limit the how many donuts they can get? I received a dozen donuts on #NationalDonutDay and I couldn't decide which one I liked the best! I was pleasantly surprised as I had not heard of Coco's before this experience. It seems like a lot of folks who had sub-par experiences were stopping by later in the day, but I was fortunate enough to have tried out fresh donuts an hour after they had opened around 8:00 a.m. Unlike my favorite donut shop in Portland -- Blue Star Donuts, Coco Donuts flavors were not nearly as interesting. However, the basic flavors here do not disappoint. I would gladly stop by again for a donut or two.

My one issue was with the almond croissant. Of the two in the display, both lacked that kind of puffiness that I like in a croissant. But I still bought one and it had plenty of almond filling. I'll be back.
