When I first went inside of the coffee shop I was surprised how it looked similar to a greenhouse with all of the plants and a Starbucks combined. I love the atmosphere and everything is so clean and nice. I can tell it's very crowded in there because it is a very popular place to go in Milwaukee. I really enjoyed the sandwich special which was the tomato mozzarella as well as their wide selected menu items. I also saw my first gospel choir which was magnificent. Love it! I was pleasantly surpised that this place was MUCH larger and more comfortable than it appeared from outside. There is not much I can say about Alterra's coffee that hasn't already been said.....it ROCKS! Seriously good!! My fav! I love going to all of the Alterra's (including General Mitchell International) but I like the Prospect location for plugging in the laptop and getting some work done on a cold day! Lots of outlets (which the Riverwest location lacks...even though in the spring/summer that patio IS fantastic!) People are nice and the baristas are friendly and treat their coffee lovingly! One of my all-time favorite coffee shops for a very simple reason: I love reading in coffee shops but hate smelling like coffee afterward. At this Alterra you can sit in the garage-like area for hours and use the wi-fi but leave without smelling like coffee. It's also a perfect spot in the summer because you're not outside in the brutal sun but you're not stuck indoors. read more

The drinks are excellent here, and the food is surprisingly great. I'm a little bit in love with their smoked salmon breakfast sandwich and the tomato basil turkey sandwich. Delicious flavor profiles on beautifully textured bread (soft, but with a tiny bit of toasty crunch). Their chai tea isn't over-sweetened (unlike most chais I run into these days), and their espresso shakes have a lovely blend of ice cream and coffee flavors. The only real problem I have with this particular location is that the seating is a bit limited. For the popularity of this location, I wish they had more indoor tables. read more

This is my favorite Colectivo location (out of the 4 I visited while in town). The atmosphere, natural light, plants, and unique space (was this an old car repair garage?) set it apart from the bigger footprint locations. Now... I only stumbled upon the location because I was going to something nearby, so I can't speak to the convenience. But Milwaukee is not a sprawling town. If you're within a few miles and want coffee/lunch, try this Colectivo location. Why do I think I am qualified to write this review? Always an excellent experience at this Alterra. My morning routine requires an extra large regular coffee and ham and cheese croissant. The coffee is strong and gives the necessary buzz to get the morning started. Far superior then the swill at Starbucks or Caribou. Of course at rush hours there is a line, but the employees always seem to be extra efficient. If you are looking for other breakfast or lunch options, there is always a great selection of fresh and handmade sandwiches and baked goods. The outside seating is comfy with cushioned chairs and some great people watching on prospect. read more

One of my favorite coffee shops I've been to ever! We absolutely loved this place, they source everything locally, have a really unique menu with a lot of healthy options. Came here twice for their Back Room concerts which are really good. Would love to give them 5 stars but the chairs are the most uncomfortable metal folding chairs that they put a cut out piece of plywood on the seat area. Most likely won't come back again until they change those seats. Two hours of my ass on hard plywood makes me unhappy. Bring a seat cushion if you go. read more

Excellent local coffee & tea spot. Loved the teas, especially the chai that's made from the actual tea leaves (there's another name they have for it). Great atmosphere, high ceilings. Gave it 4 stars because their white bean chili wasn't as good as I'd hoped, but the tea made up for it. read more

Every time I visit this place they mess up my order and I wait a very long time for food or coffee. Also, the staff is pretty unfriendly.

My husband & I were passing through Milwaukee on our way to Port Washington. We passed an Alterra Coffee and decided to stop in for a coffee since I had heard of them before. I have to say that the espresso that I ordered was not good. First of all, since when is a single shot of espresso the equivalent of 1/4 of an espresso cup? The espresso tasted burned and bitter, almost as bad as Starbuck's espresso. I think I'll stick to Intelligentsia to satisfy my espresso cravings. On a positive note, I did like the ambiance, very urban and trendy. Maybe we went during an off time, but it didn't seem packed at all; we were able to find a table right away. read more

Coffee is great but you need to set aside a half hour of your day just to get it. Everytime I go there it takes FOREVER to get your drink, even an iced coffee was a process. Last two times I was there the employees were bantering back and forth about how they do things in Tosa v. Eastside. This isn't an East vs. West dilemma, just make the damn coffee. read more

Never enough seating. Tried this Colectivo and the lakefront one on a Saturday evening and a Sunday afternoon. We could not find one spot. However, they'd locked a room off with extra seating. It's annoying having to come and leave a place when you're trying to start studying. read more

I came here so I can get a cup of coffee and do homework before I had to work tonight. I figured getting out ot the dorm to get some work done would help me be more efficient. However, after I ordered my two muffins and 2 cups of coffee for me and my girlfriend, I realized the internet is completely unreliable and stopping at colectivo was a huge waste of my time. I am a computer science major and know how to connect to wifi and know it is not a problem with my laptop. I have worked in the computer industry for 4+ years. I would not even consider coming to colectivo again. I have been to roast coffee and rochambo multiple times and they have always been helpful and reliable. Definitely would not recommend colectivo to anyone if they wanted to get work done. They have good coffee but DO NOT go here to work on your computer read more

I love this place and it's a great place to get work done; however, I'm confused as to why there isn't an option to tip when using a credit card at some of the locations but not at others. I usually go to the lakefront or Bay View shop and I always feel like a POS for not carrying cash on me for a tip. Meanwhile, Shorewood (and possibly other ones) allow you that option. Seems a little unfair to your employees. Not many people carry cash anymore! read more

Okay so, I'm not the first to review this Alterra. What I'm really reviewing are the Prospect location's recent renovations. Aside from the fact that Milwaukee has a local player that can stomp Starbucks, the design of their locations is truly something to behold. I have always felt that a key to their success has been that each location is unique and inviting. When the roasting operations moved from Prospect to their current Riverwest headquarters, it left a void at it's prior location. What was special about the Prospect Alterra now that the hustle and bustle of roasting was gone? Well, they figured it out. The loading dock was transformed into a terraced indoor/outdoor space. Flooded with natural light, a glass garage door, sky lights and tropical plants let Milwaukeeans feel they can stretch their beloved summers out just a little more. read more

We came here for a podcast live event. Loved the look of this place. Had a great layout for a small venue. Love the style of the place. One drawback was the noise that was coming from the coffee shop and kitchen area. The walls between the coffee shop and their venue space don't go all the way to the ceiling so there was a lot of background noise that was distracting at times. The wine selection wasn't very good.
