It's been awhile since we've been here. We came here before their renovation and only once afterwards. Hubs and I decided to return to check this place out, again. We were immediately seated after arriving. Hubs ordered the Veggie omelet with home fries and rye bread. He said that the home fries were nicely seasoned. The omelet was pretty good and a healthy alternative. I ordered pork roll with fried egg and American cheese on a roll. I thought the pork roll was a little salty but it was pretty good. This place still looks the same but a lot nicer and cleaner looking. Service was friendly and quick. Will return to try other items on the menu. read more

Updating my review from awhile ago. New owners took over and it shows. Our food took a lot longer then normal, I asked for sliced tomato as a substitute from potatoes. They were so thinly sliced and not as much as before. Our waitress didn't visit us that often and took over 5 minutes to get a menu. I hope they read this and take the feedback. Training is needed and I am worried as good as this place was, it's about to change. read more

A throwback luncheonette where sitting at the counter is not a punishment. Any style eggs and hash browns in a flash with a cheeseburger chaser for your companion. This is the kind of local joint where the regulars settle in to bitch about politics and the numbskulls who comprise local government (and who just might be sitting on the next stool.) If you value your safety I do not recommend you patronize this place. The owner is a loose canon and potentially violent. Today I questioned his waitress daughter why I only got two strips of bacon for 4.00 when 3 slices were previously served. I was told they cut back. Nothing wrong with my inquiry and I politely paid the bill. After I got home he called me and was very rude. He believed I insulted his daughter. He treatened me that if I ever returned he would throw me through the glass window. I was surprised he got my number and suspect he tracked it from my name on my credit card. Invasion of privacy? Threatening physical harm? Harassment? These are the new managers. Very rude, crazy high price increases, and poor food quality. His voicemail to me documents all of the above. Stay away! read more

I love places like this, with a counter that gives a view into the grille area - such a nod to classic lunch counters of the past. We were greeted as soon as we entered by the owner, who was extremely friendly and cheerful. She made sure to tell us that the kitchen was a one-man operation (not sure if that is every day or just this particular day, but it didn't matter to us!) in case we were in a hurry. We weren't - and I'm glad because the breakfast was FANTASTIC. I had a mushroom and cheese omelette, and my partner had pancakes and eggs. The coffee was good too, and they seemed to have a fair amount of iced coffee and "fancy" coffee options, although those aren't our scene. I just ate breakfast at CCS and I have to say besides the food being great(I had the Irish omelette w/ a side of French toast) the staff was the absolute friendliest staff I have ever seen. I'm new to the Howell area back in NJ from Florida and I felt like I was back in the south based on how friendly everyone was. I worked and managed bars and restaurants all over the country for over 20 years and I have never been blessed with such a happy staff of employees that I witnessed this morning. Howell is lucky to have this diamond in the rough called Colonial Coffee Shop and I'm glad I only live a few minutes away. I will definitely be back and become a new regular. read more

I'm surprised that I've never stopped in here after living in the area so long. Colonial is tucked away in a strip mall between a Chinese and Italian restaurant. I frankly never noticed it. Friends suggested it and five of us stopped in for lunch. To me Colonial seems like a luncheonette in the old sense of the term. As you walk in there is a counter at the right and booths on the left. The kitchen is behind the counter. We were seated and brought menus. They have a pretty nice $5.50 lunch menu that's pretty hard to beat, typically it's a good size sandwich and fries. We had to ask for that menu. I don't know if it's for regulars only, or they forgot to tell us. I ordered the turkey blast which was a turkey, bacon, cheese, with russian dressing on a pita. I didn't want fries so I asked if they could substitute something. Our waitress suggested fresh fruit. I said, "sure." The sandwich was very good and the fruit consisted of a good portion of sliced strawberries and bananas. Nice! This is a nice family run place with a friendly vibe; worth checking out. read more

If you can't get home to Mom's for a delicious homemade breakfast, then make your way to the Colonial Coffee Shoppe. The first thing you'll notice is a greeting from the owner, Pete, a friendly guy who's a master at the grille. It's a very busy place, but you'll always get a table, and you can watch Pete work his magic. I ordered a 3-egg Swiss cheese omelet with bacon, fried and white toast, my favorite breakfast. I smiled big when my meal came. It looked perfect. Could it taste as good as it looked? I was not disappointed, believe me. I had to force myself to eat slowly because I wanted to savor every bite. The eggs were perfectly blended into the omelet, which had just the right amount of cheese in it. The bacon was crispy (I don't like chewy bacon!) and the home fries were tender and very well seasoned. I was a happy diner. At a happy diner. That's a win win in my book. Stop in on purpose. Normally pretty good but this time we ordered on DoorDash as a group (5 different meals) and any meal that was SUPPOSED to come with bacon did not. The only one we got bacon with was the one we paid extra money for more and got a normal amount. Kind of annoyed when that's the part we were excited for most. I don't really see where some of these negative reviews are coming from. I am a big fan of Colonial. It is family run, as many others have noted, and definitely has a warm, family feel. Great breakfast, all your typical staples are offered and the plates are big enough to share. The omelettes and home fries are delicious and all the ingredients taste super fresh. Quick disclaimer: I am friendly with the family who owns Colonial, but my review is purely based on my eating experience here. I am a breakfast lover and couldn't avoid not sharing the love with everyone in the NJ area who NEEDS to try it here! I'm shocked there are so few reviews for this place - it is one of my favorites. It is so hard to come by a great, family owned, traditional diner these days. Colonial takes the cake for me in the NJ area for so many reasons. The family that runs this place built their lives on hard work, and while they suffered a huge loss with the fire damage, they arose from the ashes like phoenixes. I love the family feel and how they welcome in customers like they are welcoming them into their own family. The food here is fantastic. Everything is fresh, served quickly, and the portions are very generous. The menu offers a wide variety of your breakfast favorites, and every now and then, you'll get some eclectic specials to mix things up. I always order the same thing - a pork roll breakfast sandwich on sourdough, because I have an unhealthy obsession with it and it makes my heart sing. You will not be disappointed by your experience here. Come visit the amazing staff who are quick, attentive, and friendly. The new design post-fire is warm and welcoming, so feel free to stay awhile. It's always a great way to start your day. We go here often, the food is always delicious, the staff is always attentive and smiling.

This is probably my favorite place to get breakfast. The food is fresh, good quality, and quickly made. The wait staff is courteous. A huge plus is the coffee (regular or iced if you ask) is REALLY GOOD for a small breakfast place. (And I'm a coffee snob ;) I've been here with friends, with my husband, and with my husband and kids. There hasn't been a time yet where any of us were disappointed. Have to say, the place looks older than the strip mall it's located in. Everything in there is dated, but that's one of the things I like!! My husband and I took our daughter here for breskfast. We ordered our food and no more than a minute passed before it was placed in front of us. Now I have heard of fast service before but this was implying that our food was sitting for us to call it's name. We said "that was fast" and the waitress just laughed and walked away. The coffee was gross. The food was cold and my husband found two peices of hair in his food. The toast and pancakes had the syrup and butter packets on them which is gross since we dont know where they had been. None of the people behind the counter cooking were wearing hair nets which explains the hair in the food. We would love to support small bussiness' and give it an awesome review but our experience was very disappointing. To say the least, we will never be returning. read more
