SCAMMERS!!! Had a booth at Home Depot, were offering to waive the diagnostic fee ($99) if I signed up then. I specifically asked if it was waived if they didn't find anything wrong with my furnace. Assured "even if you don't need it". When they called to schedule, was told there was a $99 fee. I explained that I had signed-up at Home Depot, so the fee was waived. Nope... only if you have repairs done the day of diagnostic. I specifically asked if they weren't able to do it that day was it still waived and was assured "they can fix it that same day, the vans are fully stocked". Really? Hmmm. They carry every part for every furnace? They diagnosed the problem, and was told they couldn't fix it that day (the tech looked at me like I was crazy... of course they don't have every part they might need with them so they would have to schedule to come back), and I was charged $99. I called their office and asked if they would deduct the fee from the total when the work was done SINCE IT WAS THEIR FAULT IT COULDN'T BE FIXED "THE SAME DAY", and was told Absolutely Not. What a great scam.... they would NEVER be able to fix it the same day in order to get the $99 diagnostic exam paid. AVOID THIS COMPANY. Even if the estimate to repair is reasonable, I WILL NOT USE OR RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY. Dave Whispell is the guy to have come out and quote you on your HVAC project. In 2015 Columbia NW installed a tankless water heater, new furnace and new electric panel in our mid-century ranch-style home. We didn't have the money then to install central AC, but we made it happen this week and our home finally is nice a cool! I've had other companies provide quotes, but it never felt right and the decision was always to go with Columbia NW. Very knowledgable, always friendly, professional and fair. So much so, we're getting ready to relocate to a new property and will definitely have them help us with our next HVAC project. read more

Due to the nature of our furnace, paying more was likely going to yield diminishing returns. Martin was a pleasure to work with and explained our options well. We have now been waiting for over 5 weeks for a coil replacement for our Mitsubishi mini-split heat pump/AC. Not only is it supposed to cost over $2,000 , but every time I call they tell me that the part has to be made to order at the factory in China and there is no telling how long it will take. After almost dying of heat exhaustion last summer while working from home (yes I'm being dramatic lol) I decided I was going to get central air. I got bids from multiple companies and although this was not cheapest place (also not the highest) I felt most comfortable with this company. From start to finish I was extremely happy. We were in the middle of selling our condo in Hayden Island while living in NYC. We needed to install a mini split before closing. To add to the complexity, the condo association just got new exteriors done so the HVAC unit had to be installed a very specific way. Phil figured how to install the unit to align to the HOA rules and was super diligent in making sure it was done in time. The buyer ended up asking us to move it elsewhere and Phil was very accommodating with our change request and moved the unit for us before we had to close. Expertise with top notch service is hard to come by. I couldn't recommend Phil and Columbia NW more. They were crucial in getting us out of this pickle and now we have successfully sold our condo. This company did come by our residence and try and price gouge us for something that could have cost a whole lot cheaper. We have proof of your visit and saying your technician was not here, is just not correct. But calling my wife a liar is not what you should have done. 1 star from me aswell. Columbia NW Heating installed a heat pump for us about 7 years ago. We have had to spend a minimum of $1500 each of the ;ast several years. Tonight, at abot 10:15, my heat pump came on, ran for a couple of minutes, and shut off, only to do it again a few minutes later. If I could find out how to turn off the heat pump without shutting off ny furnace (it's below 30 degrees outside), I could wait till tomorrow to have someone come to the house, The company's ad says they offer service 24/7. I just called. only to be put on hold for 30 minutes. The person who answered was from an answering service and said he couldn't promise that anyone would call me back before tomorrow. So much for 24/7 emergency service! I really wish we had never heard of or bought anything from them, and, if asked, I will tell people to stay as far away from them as possible! Please see our response to their reply!! Home advisor said heat pump full installation would be $2,700-11,000 high end with average of $4,000-8,000. You can buy full systems for $3,000-4,500. They quoted us $12,000-15,000 and everything is already ran for ductwork, etc. asked about Geothermal heat pump but home advisors says $3,000-25,000 high end and he quoted us $35,000. Very frustrating when you feel they are trying to rip you off just because you have a nice home. He was very nice, here on time but it we are disappointed. Also, he kept telling me running auxiliary heat was the same as a regular electric furnace - no, it is not, you are using 4-5 times the electric to use the heating coils in heat pump. . Welp, getting a fireplace put in for $5,000. $150-200 for regular electric heat or $400+ for auxiliary. Also, said the heat pump would be around $30 month to heat our home - only forgot to mention the $200 month heat pump financing payments would bring a usual $113-160 bill up to $230ish. Please base your price on the product and not the cost of the home and remodeling done. Now we understand why we couldn't get a quote based off the size of our home. Sigh. In reply to the response: you are blatantly lying!! We live in Rainier, Oregon and my husband is Ian. I would take a picture of your business card but we threw it away after you tried to price gouge us. I would highly suggest you check those records again. Service response is terrible. Installed Trane heat pump November 2022, system has malfunctioned several times since. Service calls are scheduled one to two weeks in the future. Today (1/30/23) it quit again, service scheduled for 2/13. Outside temp is 17 degrees. So, two weeks without heat. Used this company because it is local, but would not recommend it. read more

From the estimate that wasn't clear to the install that was far from code. They didn't listen to my concerns.

Found them though Home Depot. I needed a quote for a new furnace. Straight out he told me about how there was a deal that was "ending today" which was a red flag for me...I told him that I was looking for a quote for an installation maybe 2 months from now which was probably a red flag for him also because after I told him that he said something on the lines of "So when I leave today I'm not getting your business, correct?". He started offering deals and discounts for stuff that other companies had as a standard package deal. Also: He also mentioned how he gauges customer's financial abilities based on how they look. People's finances aren't based on what their hair looks like or how they dress like. If that's part of your company's training, you should at least tell your reps to keep that biased thought to themselves. Even though he still talked about the more-expensive model, at that point it felt like patronization. So...No...big PASS on this one. I don't support businesses that sets a sense of panic, deadline, and customer bias for something that will cost me at least $3,500. read more

Friendly workers BUT the (one) electrician they have had us within minutes of our house burning down. (See pics) The details? We have a 1951 house that (at the time) had 100amp service and the wires from PGE are only rated to 70amps. I asked before hiring, after hiring and during installation "shouldn't we upgrade to 200 amp before installing another 220 breaker to our already full box? Electrician all three times "Nope, you're good we do this all the time" Flash forward after one summer of using said AC, the 70 amp rates wires heated up, melted the meter, melted the shielding and the two 240amp wires you do not want to touch, started touching. And arching. And smoking. And "oh now the meter is on fire, call 911!!!" Welp. 911 came (see pic) and couldn't do a thing but call PGE to cut the power and tell us to call the fire dept back out if the house catches on fire before PGE can cut the power to our house. I sent the family away and watched the power lines arching for an hour before..... this part doesn't matter. I had to spend thousands to get our power back. This company tried to refer me back to Home Depot alluding any responsibility for almost burning our house down and I will never ever recommend ANYONE use them!!!!!!! Dangerous and lacking in morals and responsibility in order to make a buck partnering with Home Depot. read more

Such a great choice for me! From start to finish and beyond. I chose Columbia Northwest Heating to install a new heater and air conditioner in my home. The man with the information on my options came to my home first. He sat down with me and explained very clearly and without prejudice which units were best for my home and why. He laid out the features of each unit along with the cost. He left me to make my choice with NO PRESSURE. It was a very pleasant experience. After I made my decision he found financing for me, waited for approval, and scheduled an appointment for installation. Once the date arrived for installation the crew was on time and extremely efficient. They were out with multiple trucks and within the first day the unit was installed. No hassle, no fuss, down to business. This equipment was installed in August of 2017. Since then there have been one or two small problems with the unit. I called the office and they were out the next day to fix the problems at no cost to me. Again, very prompt, efficient, no hassle and friendly. I am very pleased, great experience. The furnace stopped and our regular furnace go-to company couldn't come out for more than a week. We tried to live for two days with space heaters. 1910 house, all single pane windows...yeah, nope. So I searched and ended up at Columbia NW Heating. The man who answered was very friendly and helpful, he put me on the schedule for the same day and kept me updated with texts. The tech, Drew, was very nice, super fast and fixed it in minutes for way less than I was expecting to spend. I was so happy I just went ahead and had him do the regular annual service as well since he was here and it was less time to fix than expected. I feel pretty good that we are ready for winter. Called them on a Friday for a thermostat repair. Showed up Monday late and they were there for 90 minutes to unwrap a piece of insulation from a gas fireplace and replace the thermostat. Charged me $695. Technician set the fan to keep running all the time in hopes of me having to call him back again which I did. Said it would cost another $195 to come out on the weekend. Thermostat replacement generally costs $250. Part is $25. read more

My furnace stopped working last weekend and I called two of the service dealers advertised on the NW Natural Gas site and was quoted such outrageous prices, I had to let the public know that both Columbia NW and Sunset have mercenary practices. To replace my hot surface ignitor (this is the part that NW Natural Gas said was damaged and I told them that) Sunset wanted $160 for a diagnostic and $258 for the part, Columbia NW wanted $150 for the diagnostic and $191 for the part. I ultimately went to Garoken Energy and got the part myself for $40 (it's $24 at amazon.com). I am very disappointed that NW Natural Gas website recommends such mean and dishonest service people. When the rattling of our 35 year old furnace had us wondering how many cool Spring nights it would keep us warm, we called Dan from Columbia NW Heating & Cooling to get an estimate on a new heater (including air conditioning). He came over, sat down with us, and went over e-v-e-r-y option of what we thought we wanted. Afterwards, the sticker shock made us run down to Home Depot thinking we could be DIY-ers, but after much debate, we opted to let the professionals handle the job. We called Dan back, and together we figured out a system that realistically worked for us financially and efficiently. Boy, do we feel SMART! The job (Jake and Ivan) of Columbia NW did was worth every penny! So slick, so clean, so punctual, so professional, and personable too; it's just beautiful what they did! And, we can rest easy knowing that everything is done correctly and to code. Oh, and there was never any sales pitch or pressure to buy from them either... I highly recommend this company and can't say enough nice things about them! P.S. Their home office is in Scappoose, but they service all of the Pacific NW. read more

Realizing that mistakes were made by all parties involved they sent out a tech to install the new color wi fi honeywell thermostat I bought and they refunded me $90, im not exactly sure why they refunded me the money but im not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Their service is good and of high quality, they just get inundated with calls over the summer months. It's 90+ degrees today, and my AC stopped working yesterday. Did I mention that today is Sunday? This is going to be the worst day ever. I feel like I'm living on the sun, but with more humidity. Called these guys, the lady taking calls was nice and told me what to expect, and when the on-call guy called me back shortly after, he walked me through a few things to check. The best part, he didn't talk to me like I was a helpless tool interrupting football on TV. He walked me through what he would be checking first and asked if I was comfortable checking certain things on my own. We quickly narrowed down the issue, I ran to Home Depot to get the part, and the AC is back on. Hoooorrraaaaay! Seriously though, these guys were professional, helpful, and weren't trying to just run up a bill. I'll use them again. read more

It's been a year now and the Traine unit I purchased and had installed by Columbia still doesn't work properly(and never did from day one). But in the last few months they've been working hard to get my unit to function properly. The most frustrating problem has been fixed. I will update my review once everything is operating how it should. Update. It's been 2 years now and I'm sitting a 95 degree room with a still, non-working AC unit that costs tens of thousands of dollars. I deleted my original review because Columbia Northwest asked me to remove it and promised to get the bottom of my problems. But here we are an entire year after that and my unit hasn't functioned properly for longer than 2 weeks at time. I don't have the energy or time to waste on rewriting my original review and all the INSANE things I've gone through with this awful company. All I can say is that you should not work with these people as they are not capable of holding up their end of the deal and are down right slow and negligent. Here's another update: They've now canceled my service contract which they agreed to extend by one year which was their original al trade for me changing my Yelp review. So you can add liars and manipulators to the thievery. Tens of Thousands of dollars spent for a dead AC Unit that still doesn't work with no resolve. They refunded my service call charge. I was blown away! They actually sent 2 people from the company to bring me the refund and make amends for the service I received. My wife and I share ownership of a house with my retired dad in Hillsboro. When we moved in he wanted to replace the furnace (which wasn't necessary and which we still never use because we have wood burning stoves). So, I found a rep from Columbia NW at Home Depot and put him in contact with my dad. Long story short: the heater is installed but, soon after, the condensation unit malfunctioned (beeping alarm sounding constantly) and they wanted to charge $115 just to come look at it. Flash forward a few years to this Monday. Our water heater began to leak, so I called CNW for a new installation. Appointment was set for 2 days later (Wednesday at 4:30). The leak concerned me and I didn't want it to worsen or rupture completely, so I went to Home Depot (where they offer same day installation, btw). Bim Bam Boom, heater installed yesterday (Tuesday). So, I call CNW to cancel the appointment. The phone girl, Mackenzie I think, says "oh I called yesterday and talked to your dad and he didn't know anything about it so cancelled the appointment." "Why would you have called him?" I asked. "That's the contact number you gave us." "No, the contact number I gave you is ***-**** and its in my pocket and hasn't rung yet. You called the number of a person who didn't set up the appointment and yet allowed him to cancel the appointment without informing the person who actually made the appointment." I'm sorry, but that's the height of incompetence in my book. If I hadn't had the heater replaced yesterday I'd still be waiting for a visit from Columbia NW to come do the job! You don't allow someone who didn't set up an appointment to cancel it without informing the person who actually did!!! Needless to say I'll not be recommending you (much less using your company again) and you can rest in knowledge I'll pass along this story of your ineptitude. read more

This is one of the worst companies we've ever worked with, which is a huge drag when you've spent more than $17,000 on a product. Putting aside that their installers completely blocked access to our crawl space (and when we questioned them about it while they were doing it they insisted it was the only option, which we now know is untrue). The main problem, in our opinion, is their maintenance program. From start to finish it's unpleasant - the schedulers are rude, the supervisor is obnoxious & unhelpful, they overcharge for any / all services, and many of the techs are just plain unknowledgeable (one actually said "I think you have a rat" when he came out to replace a missing bolt that turned out to be part of a product recall which they never told us about b/c, as we we were informed, it was our job as homeowners to monitor product recalls despite the fact that we purchased a multi year maintenance plan from them and they'd been coming to our house twice/yr for 3 yrs). I'm sorry to say this b/c we prefer using local businesses whenever possible but this company stinks and we *strongly discourage* using them for anything at all. read more

Jim helped us with our old furnace last year and we asked for him again and felt lucky he was able to come! He is efficient, knowledgeable and professional and we trust him. He says good things about the company too; that they appreciate your good workers and reward them for excellence. I bought a new house and my only request was that the AC/Heating was in full working order. Columbia heating did the work prior to me moving in and i have the paperwork guarantee. I bought the house and the AC during the heat WAVE did not work. I called Columbia with my guarantee and they tell me I need a 2nd unit for a 2,500sq foot house. I know this is not the case as my house I just sold is 3,000sq ft and 1 unit worked amazing. I then get charged $100 for a service call AND on TOP of that he repairs a part of the unit for $450. At this point I now have AC downstairs only and trickle upstairs. I was told someone could come in a month (after the heat wave to take a look) Really? I have now paid for something the previous owners already paid for and now I have too. I have 0 faith in their work and what type of business they are running. I would recommend them for installing a heat pump system. But after 6 years mine started dripping on my hardwood floors. I called and they recommended a service technician come out. Twelve minutes and $99 later it just needed the drip filter cleaned (he did in one minute in my bathroom sink) which I could have done over the phone. read more

After buying and installing our new furnace, (nice salesman, nice installer), we didn't use the a/c for acouple years. When we finally used it, we found out that the insrtaller didn't use sealer tape on the seams, we were losing more air from the unit then what comes out of our vents. Then we found out that the circulate and fan options do not work, because they were never hooked up. This was one of the reasons we bought this unit, and paid for everything to work, (which was quite abit). When I called about the problem, they would not come out unless I had a 109.00 dollar check waiting for them as a service call. Doesn't matter that the unit wasn't installed properly, I guess I should have gotten a hvac license to properly check their work. I will never recommend this company. read more
