I came here on Monday after some serious rain early in the morning...perfect weather for pho. It was about 12:30pm and things were starting to slow down from the lunch rush. I waited in line to be seated. The workers are quick and efficient to get everything cleared to seat new customers. I ordered a large Pho Tai (rare steak pho). My glass of water and bowl of soup came soon after I ordered. The broth was piping hot (which was exactly what I needed), the beef was rare and tender (cooking perfectly in the hot broth), and it came with a side of lime, bean sprouts, jalapeno, cilantro...but I was seriously missing the basil!!! WHERE WAS THE BASIL?!? After I was handed my soup and water, it was about impossible to flag anyone down for any service. My water was never refilled. I also didn't have a little side dish for dipping my beef in hoisin and sriracha sauces! I ate my bowl of soup, paid up front, and left feeling incomplete. The portion was good and I paid a total of $9 (which is cheaper than what I find at other pho places in the area)...however, the lack of service and not being able to fully enjoy my pho the way I like to enjoy it was a complete turn off to me. I've been here a few times now so I should write my review. Place is big and airy. Doesn't smell like a typical dirty asian restaurant. The food is ok. I've had better pho and rice dishes elswhere but it isn't totally bad either. The staff is hit or miss. Sometimes they're nice and attentive and other times even when it's not busy they just don't seem to come around. The rice plates and portions are a bit small. Sure big plates but small portions. I really enjoy this place. I have never eaten there, only ordered to-go. Sometimes it is hard to order over the phone because 1. They can't hear me and 2. I can't hear them, but they still get my order right. Pros: They get my order correct. Pretty quick. About 15 - 20 minutes. Reasonable prices. Con: Sometimes they forget to give the sauce on the to-go order. I love the shrimp pho, but the shrimp are never fully deveined, which I think is really gross so I end up doing it. Which takes some time and makes them a little cold. Very small amount of parking. It is a private lot, but the lot is tight. Overall I really do enjoy their food. It does look like a nice restaurant to sit down in. It's not fancy or anything, but it does look like they did some updating. We decided to finally try this place since I was fighting a cold. I got the chicken pho soup and it was just ok. The broth did not have a ton of flavor. The noodles were ok but a bit thin and tons of white chicken but did not have a ton of flavor. I have had better pho at Pho lyn or in Cupertino. Hubby got the beef and he said the same tons of food but didn't excite him in taste. Spring rolls were just ok as well needed something. Service was very quick and prices were reasonable. I love this place because it gives you what you expect. I expected tasty, low cost complete meals (like rice plates) with extremely fast service. No frills, no schmoozing with customers. Just fast food to feed my hungry belly and not rob me of the cash I need for gas. I got exactly what I wanted. I usually get rice plates and at other places have either had flavorless or beef-jerky-like meat, or waaay tooo salty broth, or not enough pickled vegetables or weird tasting fish sauce. It's so disappointing when you eat Vietnamese food when one thing is off. Everything has to be eaten in a combination, so when one thing is off, it just utterly sucks. I love this place. I don't know if it changes anything, but my Vietnamese husband dislikes it. It was really big, nice and clean for a Com Tam place, though I know Com Tam was pretty much not the only kind of food they served. I remember ordering #13 & #14, and we both loved the food. The price was reasonable, the service was bloody good, the staffs were all friendly and nice. I really liked the place. I'm not sure why in other reviews, people said that this place doesn't accept credit cards(?!) because indeed the cashier did accept my friend's. As a regular, I know they have great broken rice dishes. That's their specialty after all. #30 is my go-to dish, and I rarely go a month without a visit or two. I love the pork chop, steamed pork cake, etc. The rolls are good too, fresh or fried. Pick one of the rice porridges on a cold rainy day, but stay away from the pho. It is mediocre at best, especially in a city bustling with pho shops. I really want to give a higher rating but I just can't. The service is generally rushed and inattentive. If you need something, you will have to get out of your seat and chase someone down for assistance. That being said, there are 2 big positives here besides the food: 1- You can't beat the location. Just another day at work. We get lunches at work but we decided to go out (and fill up my tires, another adventure for another time) and get some Vietnamese rice places. My friend TUAN TUAN knows all the good places and called in our order ahead of time. We made our way over to the place, a good 15 minutes away. When we got there, our food was neatly stacked into four stacks, 11 plates in all. I peeked and the bill came out to $84 (for 11 lunches?? A DEAL!). The only thing most notable here is that although NO PEANUTS was requested multiple times, there was no note of it on the check and ....there was peanuts. A serious food faux pas, especially to those with nut allergies. To the rest of us nut lovers (ha. ha), our food was great! I'm currently nursing a food coma which is probably going to hit in our upcoming very important meeting in 20 minutes. I got the pork chop with egg AND that special Vietnamese egg-cake-thing-that-reminds-me-of-an-omelette-smushed-together. It also had a good amount of rice with a good ratio of fish sauce, pickled vegetables, and one really mothereffer hot green chilli pepper (gave that away. I used to come here all the time after class at SJCC. Come here for the rice plates, not the pho. Pho needs more nuoc mam, imo. You can almost never go wrong with broken rice plates if you go for the pork-egg meatloaf, shredded pork, and/or pork chops. This might not have been the best place to eat after a workout session, but it's down the street from my gym and it's convenient. Plus we were craving some pho... I was here last night with a couple of my workout buddies (2nd time for 2 of us) and really enjoyed the food and establishment. Here's why: (1) It's SUPER clean! Y'all know that some of these pho joints aren't always the cleanest of places. (2) They serve a good variety of rice plates as well as pho - good portions, too (3) They have a very attentive and friendly staff. Maybe it was the company I was with, but they tended to our every need and allowed us to take our time eating and even chatting. We were there for well over an hour and they kept checking up on us and refilling our hot tea. (4) Lastly, they probably have THE BEST peanut sauce I've tasted! They serve it WARM!!! Not to offend anyone or anything, but they actually English! Me and a large group of friends were heading over the hill on a Sunday morning to drop off one of our friends at the SJ airport. Essentially, we were trying squeeze in one last meal before his flight took off. To save time waiting for a seat, I gave the restaurant a call. I told them that we would need a table of 9 and he responded by giving me tables #34 & 35. At the time I had no idea what that meant but once I walked through the door, I told them we had tables 34 & 35 and everything was already set up. The menu itself was pretty large for a restaurant that has 'broken rice' in its name. They have pho, rice plates, vermicelli, and some other things. I read some of the other reviews and they highly suggested the rice plates, but I was in the mood for some pho instead. Just a heads up though, my friend ordered some deep fried spring rolls or something and she had found a hair that had fused with it (because it was deep fried). I told a staff member, he apologized immediately and went into the kitchen to cook us another batch. Not long after, my pho had arrived. The broth was good, it wasn't too strong so I added some of my own touches, but the thing that surprised me was that they only used a little if not any MSG. I came here today with a bunch of my co-workers for lunch on their grand opening day. The food and atmosphere is definitely better than the previous restaurant (Asian Garden). I ordered the pork, shrimp, and eggroll vermicelli. The eggroll was really good, everything else was average, and it only had two shrimps. The interesting thing was my other co-worker ordered pork & eggroll vermicelli, but the bowl was half the size of mine! I believe it was $1 difference, but I guess they decided to make up for just giving me 2 shrimps by giving me double the amount of noodles. Service definitely needs to be improved, but I'll give them a break since it's their first day. This place is A-OK. It's not as dirty as many pho joints in San Jose but still not the cleanest. It's a pretty big place, so even if I've ever had to wait it has not been more than 5-10 minutes. Campbell area has like NO Vietnamese restaurants (well no authentic tasting) around, and Com Tam Thanh is the one that comes the closest. With this being said, I do think that this place is a little bit saltier than some because they cater to a lot of Americans. The menu is pretty huge and they have a lot of selctions. Even Banh Uot which are rice rolls with toppings and fish sauce. There are also a few other very Vietnamese dishes other than just pho, but they taste okay. Nothing too special. The service here is so-so. The servers are nice and bring you what you need, but they're often busy running around to other tables and customers at the door so no one checks up on you until you flag them down for something. Pretty standard for a Vietnamese place. The tables are usually wiped dry, but sometimes I still see water or old spilled oup from the previous party. Overall this is ok, so I'm still giving it 3 stars, but it's a low 3/high 2 because they do not have com ga hai nam. If they had this dish (rice cooked with chicken broth and steamed chicken and fresh basil) then I maybe would rate this place 3.5. read more

This spot has a diverse menu that allows me to grab all my Viet cravings when I was a kid. I normally get the pho and broken rice plates from here. The only thing not giving this review a 5 star is the pho Ga (chicken pho) they use chicken breast instead of the legs, gizzards, heart, or liver. The middle aged and older staff don't seem to care about treating the customers with friendly service. Regarding the food, we ordered spring rolls to start, and all six of us liked them! The food came out very fast and the meal was exactly what we expected: hot, fresh, and tasty. Was aiming for a light lunch at Asia Garden, and found it had turned into Com Tam Thanh. Service was great-friendly, informative, and very quick. Had the soft spring rolls with shrimp. Tasty with the warm peanut sauce. Went with Pho (my wife had the beef, I had the chicken). Great broth and the meat had good flavor. My wife had the ice coffee - VERY strong (waiter said they'd rather add cream if asked than give a bland flavored coffee), which my wife said was the best she'd ever had (just add a shot of vodka, and it would be perfect). I had the thai ice tea. Also very nice. Glad to go there again. If you want a wider entre selection, try Vung Tau Restaurant in downtown.. Great location. Close to the highway (just south of 280 on Bascom), West San Jose, and most importantly, its close to my apartment. I've tried to order the Bánh Cun, but they didnt have it whenever I've asked. On second thought, it probably wouldnt be good there. I've only had amazing Ph once (Turtle Tower in SF), so although Cm Tm Thanh's Ph isnt amazing, it makes me happy. I really love to get it to go and eat it at home while watching a movie or an important game on TV. I am a fan of their Cm Tm plates. I order the plate with most goodies. Its in the name. I don't really have much to say about this place but it just seemed pretty typical of your average pho restaurant. The workers were pretty efficient, as they tried to take our order immediately but we needed more time. They also served us our food fast, and water as soon as we ordered. As for the food, the pho with meatballs was good. No complaint there. The regular sized pho felt like a large to me, and that's including the fact that I skipped breakfast that morning and was starving by the time it hit lunch hour. Also, I ordered the deep fried eggrolls (#11 on the menu) and it was the BEST eggrolls I have ever eaten! Crispy on the outside, and delicious filling on the inside. My cousin ordered a vermicelli dish, which she claimed was delicious as well. Oh, here's one tip.
