I honestly dream about this place on days where I want a delicious sandwich. My friend and I found this place while we were visiting Virginia during the summer and it was such a cute spot to have brunch. I got their chicken salad sandwich which came on a super soft brioche bread and pickled Onions while my friend got there pancakes. Both meals were super delicious and I could not stop saying how upset I was with my sandwich we both paired our meal with some delicious coffee. I was so obsessed with this place we came here a second time, I got the same thing while my friend got a breakfast bowl which had eggs, meat and some other stuff which was also delicious. Again we paired our meals with some delicious coffee. A most visit if you're in Virginia. HOLY YUM!!! This place is amazing!!! I was originally attracted by another yelpers post of $5 breakfast and coffee however the sadly don't do that anymore. They do however offer military discount. I love that everything there is locally grown and they support local businesses! They also have a bakery across the street which I need to go by and try! I enjoyed my chai tea a lot (they sadly don't have cinnamon haha). If you're into very earthy chai tea you'll love it! The breakfast sandwich was AMAZING. I loved the over easy egg paired with the soft sweet potatoes and the soft bun. Just amazing. The paired sauce went very nicely and complimented the sandwich perfectly. The four of us (2 Adults and 2 kids) shared the fried rice bowl, which is enormous, and the vedge sandwich, hash tots, zucchini fritters (with goat cheese, corn and heirloom tomatoes) and fruit fritters. Each fritter "small plate" came with 6 big fritters (similar to donut holes) Kids shared the watermelon juice which was delicious. Tastes just like liquified watermelon. Grabbed breakfast here on a busy Sunday morning. They have a small attached parking lot we were able to score a spot in. We were told by the hostess that it would be thirty minutes for a table, or we could be seated immediately at the window bar. We opted for the latter - big mistake. I have never been so uncomfortable in a restaurant. The sun was beating down on us through the window, and there was no shade or any way to relieve ourselves. The backless seats and tiny eating surface just seemed sub standard. And a table was ready next to us not ten minutes later. The whole thing was a terrible setup, partially caused by us, but they need to do something about those seats in the window. Anyway, service was OK, our waitress disappeared halfway through but was replaced by someone else who was very kind, apologetic and attentive. We originally came based on the vegetarian strength of their menu. All the food was just ok - my breakfast sandwich had runnier eggs than I would like and my wife's salad was a weird mix of cold crudite and warm roasted veggies. And our coffee never arrived. I really wanted to like this place, and they were clearly trying. Had we waited for a normal table I'm sure our experience would have been better. read more

Really good, but not the best. I got their egg benedict, but I didn't want the ham. I wanted spinach. They told me they don't have it in their restaurant so I opted for tomatoes instead. It was good, just not the best I've ever had. It comes on a bed of greens. Instead of the usual English muffins, it was biscuit as a base for the benedict. I did enjoy it regardless. The hubs got their breakfast sandwich with short stack pancakes. He was pleased with his breakfast. The kid got egg with "fruit" only to find out it's just peaches. If it's peaches, why doesn't it say peach on the menu instead of "fruit". I had thought it meant assorted fruits. Oh well. Since he didn't want the fruit, we got a pancake for him and he was happy. 4 stars because options were limited especially in their coffee department. Found this place on Yelp. It was number one on the list of breakfast spots in the area and I see why. It is a farm to table establishment so they only serve locally sourced food from VA, NC, and MD (not sure about MD). Therefore, they don't serve things like orange justice because it is not locally sourced. There is community seating so different parties may be at the same table. The decor is great and the staff was welcoming and informative. To start we had the zucchini squash fritters. My husband and son had pancakes with blackberry compote and bacon and I had a bowl. My son had peach milk. We all really enjoyed our food. Keep in mind that because the food is local, the menu changes regularly. read more

The biscuit was horrible but the chicken sausage was very good. The hollandaise sauce was ok. Also ordered a latte with a croissant which took 15 min to get to us even though it was not busy at all. Delicious dishes with meticulous service! This was my first time eating brunch at Commune after hearing so many wonderful things about the venue. It's a beautiful spot with yummy food and a very comfortable and modern atmosphere. Situated right by the oceanfront, the cafe has small, accessible parking alongside the Esoteric Craft Beer and Restaurant. A special highlight of Commune is its healthy, local, and seasonally fresh ingredients and produce, which you can taste right off of your plate. While entering and exiting, you can even sneak a peek at their lovely growing garden. As soon as my friend and I stepped foot into the cafe, we were greeted with energetic staff, mouthwatering aromas, and a gorgeous, rustic interior embellished with cleanliness and picturesque seating. Our server was amiable and attentive; she explained a bit of the menu to us since she knew it was our first time at Commune. My friend ordered a Burnt Honey Latte, while I ordered a Lavender Latte; we were incredibly impressed with the delightful quality and pleasantness of our fresh coffee. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and my friend ordered the Heirloom Cornmeal Waffles. Not only was it immensely fresh, but it was also hot, refreshing, delicious. Our dishes were filling with the presentation touchingly and carefully crafted. What a cool restaurant in Virginia Beach! I found this place through the help of Yelp and it did not disappoint. We came here for a late brunch on a Sunday and the place was packed. Once we drove up we knew we were at the right place because the line was out the door. After about 20 minutes of waiting we were able to get seats at the bar space by the windows for the three of us. I started with an iced Lavender Latte, which was superb! They make their own syrups and use a coffee roaster from the DC area, so loved that everything from the beginning was locally-sourced. The menu had many intriguing items and it took us a bit to figure out what to order, but I finally decided on the Seafood Stew, and added a housemade biscuit to go with. The biscuit was soft, tender and butter-y, which was what I had hoped for. And the Seafood Stew was solid. I loved the chunks of cod and fresh shrimp in it, especially with a poached egg, adding a creamy texture from the yolk. If you like seafood then it's a good stew to try, with fresh and light ingredients. The only setback was that I wish the sauce had been more thick versus liquid-y/broth-like, as it seemed to serve more as a soup than a stew. But, it had good flavor and was a solid dish, especially for a cold day. Seating at the bar space by the windows is super narrow and cramped. They have succulents and lamps on the space, too, which added to the limited table space. Fortunately, our server was great about getting empty dishes and glasses outta the way, which helped. I wouldn't recommend sitting with company at the bar space though because it's cramped and the place was loud on a Sunday afternoon with how busy the place was, so it was hard of hearing. I'd be willing to wait a little longer for a table next time, if I'm dining with others during peak hours. All in all - this place is a must-try when you're in Virginia Beach. I loved the aesthetic and farm-to-table philosophy, which reminded me of good ol' Seattle. read more

The restaurant is a couple blocks west of the beach but not too far, there is a parking lot if you plan on driving. Was feeling quite hungry so i ordered the chicken and waffles. My boyfriend and I went last night for the Modern Day Hootenanny event and we had a blast. It was an open mic night with a limited menu for the event. We tried all of the snacks which consisted of pimento cheese, a pretzel, and cornbread. So you want 5 STARS, this is how you earn it! I've heard about Commune's opening for almost a year. The concept of a true "farm to table" such a buzz phrase these days had me intrigued. But how far would they go with this commitment of embracing a difficult concept to implement. The location is only a few blocks from the oceanfront. They are a true beach restaurant in my book. They are in the same building as Esoteric due to open this week as well. Parking is beside the businesses. Not large but hours will not overlap. There is plenty of off street parking as well. Lot was clear of debris. On a rainy day I hit their front door for the first time having no expectations of just how awesome they would prove to be. The area in front of the door was clean and I loved the trendy wood plank facade across both of the restaurants entrances. I was greeted by some yum looking bakery items in their window at the bar. When I gave that first glance across the dining room I must have been grinning and in aw of just how ridiculously cool it was.Open air ceilings, concrete floors, wooden picnic style tables and a bar across the side with additional counter space in the corner for people watching. Huge black & white drop lighting caught my eye immediately. A menu board is to your right as you walk in and paper menus by the register. Okay you have my attention, I'm in love with the decorator. I ended up running into Yelp buddy Andrew C. who works there. He informed me I could grab a menu and sit down and someone would be with me shortly. The breakfast options looked terrific from some bowls of grits to a breakfast sandwich to even crepes. Price points amazing! What the hell, it's my first time I'm going large this morning, no one has crepes. It did not take long for Amber to greet me and I knew her from another restaurant she works and loved her so much that I'm now going to stalk her here. I ordered a Caramel Apple Crepe, oatmeal waffles & coffee. I hit the restroom which is around the back beside the kitchen. The solo use rooms are designated by gender. Spacious clean facilities greeted me. All the proper supplies and everything in working order. My recommendation is have them unisex to prevent back ups during peak times. While waiting for my breakfast Andrew pointed out the owner Kevin who was sitting at the bar like a regular Joe enjoying his coffee and chatting up with those around him. I did not want to bother him, but was dying to know more about the business. My coffee was already out when I sat back at the table. Cream is at the left corner of the bar. There is an area for self bus just beyond. It was really solid tasting coffee, very impressed. When putting cream in I asked Andrew where they get it from. Believe it or not it's Haitian with a roaster in DC. A few sips after my cream and I was like man this is really good! I did not even know Haitian coffee was available. My Carmel Apple Crepe was delivered to the table first upon request in less than 10 minutes. Lots of flavor, great texture as this can be an issue with being tough. A great amount of apples inside. I'm a fan. My waffles came out around several minutes after which was timed great with licking up the Carmel off my plate. Visually stunning huge dish with fried egg cooked to perfection. The butter and hickory maple syrup was already applied to the waffles in the kitchen. Three nice size patties of sausage looked scrumptious. As good as it looked, it tasted even better. Temperatures correct on all items. It was great to have the owner Kevin come check on me.as I finished my meal and enjoy their delicious coffee. He shared with me how Commune is as close to farm to table as you can get. As a matter of fact he is so conscious of what he does that he estimates a conservative 90% is fresh off the farm. He joked the he currently order six items from Sysco, items like salt & pepper. If you look just beyond their parking lot you will see a decent size garden plot they share with Esoteric. He was quick to tell me of the team effort led by Chef Barry from Eurasia. Per Kevin everyone working at the Commune has the same passion for food as he does. Kevin is not an ordinary business owner. He is an impressive environmentalist that has a passion for sustainable foods. He has the academic background in food security and the experience in farming. He believes everyone should eat great food and not have to pay an arm and leg for it to be farm to table. An example of his passion for protecting the environment and building an economy was in my mug. Kevin has been traveling to Haiti since 97 to plant trees, build parks and bring back coffee to the countries GNP. RUN, don't walk to the best new find I have found in a year. The fact they are taking the road less traveled, a tough road mind you is a reason to admire Kevin and his staff with Chef Barry. Thought I already reviewed this place but I guess not. I will give them four stars and the fifth star is missing because I think they could do a little better on the coffee side. Why? I prefer cream versus milk and the coffee was a little weak, also my wife wanted subway and they didn't have that. Maybe they have stronger Coffee and I just didn't know... well, they are a very strong four! We had a fabulous meal here, I had a breakfast sandwich with ham and a side of prosciutto. The eggs were perfectly prepared to make this a great sandwich. My daughter had the breakfast sandwich with bacon and it was also delicious.
