I have been here a couple of times and it's always nice. The food/service is great and I love that the staff is knowledgeable about their wines! There is both indoor and outdoor seating. The inside is very dim and is perfect for date night or just going out to enjoy a drink. I love that it's not overly bright inside. This is probably my favorite spot in all of Napa. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable about wine the world over, the food is always excellent, the service is consistently cordial and helpful, and the ambience is relaxing and modern. This is a great date spot or a spot to actually converse with others in your party. Wonderful cocktails as well. They are one of the few spots in town that offer blind tastings that surprise, educate and inspire. They were able to accommodate our large party and suggested wonderful pairings for each course. Bonus points for having a large, heated, dog friendly patio. We have been regulars for a while now and have never ever had a negative experience here. You can also purchase bottles on site to take home since they have a (rather impressive) wine shop a few doors down. It doesn't get much better than that. The entire menu is delectable; just wish they would bring back the rabbit pasta! Don't sleep on their dessert pairings either. And admire their choice of glassware while you're at it :) read more

I had a great experience at this restaurant while in Napa! Out of all the places I ate at in Napa, this restaurant was superior. The flavors of the food were spectacular and unique. I ordered the gnocchi for my main meal and at first I didn't think the portions were big enough. However, with all our shared sides, I was very full by the end of the dinner. The gnocchi was extremely good; I've never had gnocchi like it before. I'd recommend coming here if you want a nice/fancy dinner. My party's table was reserved for 11:30 and we had an hour to walk around and visit the shops nearby. Ambiance was great and servers were nice. Food was mediocre. I was pretty disappointed considering the price of the place. My party ordered the following: Duck fat fries: This is a must try! Each fry was perfectly crisped, just how I like it. It's served with an aioli dipping sauce. Carbonara: This was okay! The pasta was delicious and you can tell was handmade. It was a little on the drier side for me and the pork belly meat was a bit tough. Burger: This was pretty good, the meat was very juicy and tender. The brioche bun it was served on was perfectly toasted on the inside which gave every bite a nice touch. Veggie burger: My mom said it was just okay. Cod? Aguachiles: Their own spin on aguachiles. This one tasted super fishy, which I'm not used to. The lime used typically cancels out the fishyness of this dish but not at this place. Would pass on this. Nice little family brunch at this place. Didn't feel like cooking so the husband and I happened upon Compline as we walked through the center downtown. Menu had a simple yet good variety for us so we gave it a chance. We were greeted warmly and seated right away. The staff was very attentive to our needs and very knowledgeable about the variety of wines from all over the world, not just Napa Valley. Loved the vibe. The dining area was super clean and there was a lot of Napa charm. Steak was cooked to perfection, the rockfish was outstanding, the squid escabeche was fresh and delightful and the duck fat French fries were delicious. Portion size was perfect because we saved room for dessert. The pistachio tiramisu and almond blueberry cake sealed the deal! We are definitely coming back! We loved our wine pairing so much we took home a few bottles. Cheers to Adam, the manager and the rest of the staff for providing a friendly and fantastic dining experience. Last visited about 10 months ago with a one star rating. The manager reached out and apologized and asked that I return for another try. Just made it back today on Memorial Day we entered at 515pm with no other customers. Female hostess was very personable and quickly seated us. We sat in the main dining area and ordered. There was a new item chicken pot pie croquettes and the regular standards. We ordered the croquettes and they were a flavor bomb and totally tasted like a chicken pot pie. I highly recommend them. We ordered the Cauliflower which was good but not memorable like the croquettes. We both ordered the hamburger medium rare and truffle French fries. FF we're spectacular, hot crispy and the right amount of truffle. Hamburgers always a winner except mine came way undercooked. I sent it back And it was re-delivered perfectly cooked. There was only one other couple in the dining area and our waitress was on the slow side. Place was impeccably clean as were the bathrooms. Wine list and beverage selection were plentiful. All in all a vast improvement improvement from our last visit. Every employee was friendly and greeted us which is always a good feeling. We will definitely be back And recommend. First off this restaurant has an elevated ambiance. The vibe is definitely upscale. The waiters/waitresses are friendly and there to give you whatever you need. Unfortunately, much of the food fell short for me. The presentation was nice to look at but the flavors were vapid. My group of 3 started off with the market crudités and chicken croquettes. I actually found the market crudités to have the most flavor than anything else we ordered. The pickled cucumber when dipped in the sweet potato toum was very good. My mom loves salmon croquettes and was quite excited to try the chicken croquettes (pot pie). We found it lacked flavor and had to add more of the airy cheese on top to give it some taste. My mom and I ordered the bavette steak while my aunt ordered the baja golden spotted bass as our entrees. We were very excited to try the entrees but both dishes have missed the mark for us. Although we ordered the steak medium-well we had to give our jaws quite the exercise from all the chewing. My mom asked the kitchen if they could whip up some grilled onions just to add some flavor to the steak, the morels that already accompanied the steak hadn't supported the entree at all. The potatoes were prepared in a very interesting way that I never had before, but it lacked any interesting flavor. The seabass had a meaty texture and was deficient in the tender, moist, and buttery way it is usually prepared. Had a really great time here tonight (Saturday) for a 5pm reservation. We sat inside which was cozy, about ten tables plus the bar. I feel like they had more tables on the patio than inside (which were all dull when we left). At 5pm we had the place almost all to ourselves. We started with a glass of chateau southerlies which was so good! We usually have a moscato or a riesling so this was a nice intro to another sweet wine. We liked it so much that we bought a bottle on our way out. We tried the gespacho, shishito peppers, tomato salad, squid ink capellini, bavette steak, duck breast, eggplant and duck fat fries. Our favorites were the capellini. Duck breast and eggplant. Those had the most surprising flavors and textures. The capellini was imperious, buttery with crispy garlic bits, plump and soft mussels and squid as well as bursts of flavor from tomatoes. The duck breast had a crispy side with hints of Indian spices that went well with the sweet apricot. The breast was also juicy. The eggplant was very surprising, often you get very firm or overly soft eggplant. My Filipino grandparents always used to make talong(eggplant with a vinegar dipping sauce) but it was always extra a soft. The eggplant here really. Like rivals potatoes, firm enough with a slight crunch and savory flavor yet soft enough when you bite through. It's a great side that isn't too heavy like a starch but has enough best that you are satisfied. All in all We were very happy with our visit and look forward to visiting in the future. read more

Compline (Restaurant) is one of our favorite places to sit at the bar, learn about wine, and drink by the glass. They have an excellent selection of well curated by the glass and bottle options and there's always something new and interesting to try (and learn about!). They have some good food options as well. We also finally made it out to the wine shop a couple doors down, which just opened! What an absolutely stunning, open lounge/bar space up front where they offer different wines by the glass than the restaurant and possibly some flights as well. The bottle selection is absolutely stunning - you'll find sub-$50 Burgundy values next to $800 Ponsot (CdlR) and some really obscure varietals/regions as well. If you're into wine, you'll be absolutely astonished and word is, they're just getting started and will soon have even more bottles available for sale. Had the strawberry cheesecake for dessert. The strawberry cream was more like a yogurt based and not ice cream, but it's still pretty good. They're pretty famous for the burger, but I didn't feel it. Amazing experience! I am surprised this place has 3.5 stars honestly. Food - 5 stars. We had deviled eggs and the chestnut soup. Lamb Kefta was amazing!!!! As was the burger. Compline came highly recommended by a friend in the industry - she recommended it as both a wine shop and a restaurant. Their wine selection is great, but we had some bottles that needed drinking, and $25 was very reasonable for corkage. They have one larger table that's indoor/outdoor that we didn't manage to snag, but we had a nice table outside with enclosed walls and a heat lamp. To start: - Chicken croquettes: nicely fried with a smooth bechamel inside and a nice sprinkling of black pepper Mains: - Bavette steak: with sumac and shaved Brussels sprouts - Gnocchi: with interesting pickled pink oyster mushrooms and crab. I've never had pickled oyster mushrooms, but it balanced out the cream sauce nicely - Duck: confit and a breast, a generous portion, perfect with the burgundy we brought. The corn cake was nicely crisped, and it came with mustard greens - Red lentil cakes: a hearty vegetarian option with a mild curry sauce Sides: - Duck fat fries: great fries - even better using the romesco sauce from the leeks - Cauliflower gratin: fairly small but quite rich (served in a cast iron skillet) - Baby leeks: nicely charred, a unique side Service was great. The first time I discovered this place was from a food tasting tour which was really fun! Compline was one of the places we stopped at and tried the duck fat fries. They were sooo good I had to come back for more. I live in South San Jose and have made the drive just to come here. When ordering, I asked to start with Duck Fat fries as an appetizer and then we ordered a burger and fried chicken sandwich with a side salad. After sitting for 20 min still drinking water and watching the tables next to us receive their appetizers, we waited patiently under the assumption the kitchen was probably slow. Well, here come our burgers/sandwiches with no fries to complement them. Not even my dads side salad came with his sandwich when we noticed the table next to us receive the same dish with the salad served WITH the sandwich. Why the salad took as long as the fries? I have no clue. We were already half way done with our food by the time our appetizer came out. Although they apologized, removal of the fries from the bill would have been ideal. I wish I got a picture of our food but after waiting so long with no appetizer, we dove right in because we were starving! I honestly wont be back to dine in. Next time, I might order fries to-go and check out something new since there are so many other good places. The service was very good, but the list of wines by the glass weren't as impressive as I was hoping for given that it's supposed to be a wine forward place. Would get these every time for the table Compline Burger ($18) -served ala carte - I spilt this and the chicken sandwich with my girlfriend which was a great move. Cooked medium rare, the burger is topped with balsamic onions and cheese with a sesame seed bun. Simple, high quality meat with each bite packing in different flavors in your mouth. Fried Chicken Sandwich ($16)- with slaw on a brioche bun. Chicken has that fried, crispy flavor we all know and love while having the juiciness as well. Was in the area for work so decided to make some dinner reservations here at 8:30. The tables outside didn't have heat lamps but some overhead heaters which were cool. Only downside is some of them are connected and the table besides us was feeling hot so our server asked us if it was ok to turn ours down as well (I love the burn but I know that is just me) There is also a mandatory 15% tip which was fine as the service was great Duck fat fries: definitely yummy but nothing amazing either, just fries. Wish there was some parsley or a little garnish just to add some color to the plate -- 4/5 Squid ink capellini: I originally wanted to get the duck breast but they were out (of course this happens to me) but I love anything squid ink so it turned out ok. The dish was a little salty every now and then though and some of the noodles were a little clumpy. Didn't love it but I didn't hate it -- 3.5/5 Salmon: I really loved the corn and the beans just tasted like giant pinto beans. Felt like it could've used a sauce or something? Once you find it, you'll be rewarded with a casual upscale atmosphere you'll quickly settle into. For food choices we chose many dishes of their well crafted menu. Below are those menu items we enjoyed along with tasting notes for each. First Course: Pan Con Tomate - So good, better than what we had in Spain last year. The bread was perfect and the flavor of the tomatoes; out of this world. Terrine - The terrine was killer but the pickles that accompanied, wow, so bright and crisp. Daily Bread - A thing of beauty. Same bread celebrated amongst the other dishes. Second Course: Tostones - Covered in flavorfully moist chicken, this was an extremely cool riff on a tostada. Poached Egg - The egg was sitting on top of a creamy af polenta. Let the bread dunking commence. Third Course: Steak Special - We fell in love with this steak. If only it were on the menu full time. Perfectly medium rare, so tender and bursting with flavor. Gnocchi - This dish was unsuccessful on so many levels. From the bland sauce to the weird presentation, I'd steer clear.
