Pricing- 4 stars, food is reasonable for Napa pricing. Location 3 stars, in central part of Napa but the restaurant was tucked away somewhere deep in the complex of the plaza so we had to refer to Google maps a few times for the walking path. Parking- 3 starts street and garage parkings. Cleanliness- 5 Stars, very clean COVID friendly and outdoor heating available. Service- 5 Stars, attentive waiter good vibe. Knowledgeable of menu. Food- 3 Stars, nothing really unique about the burgers. We had pork belly burger and it was good, not bad or not extremely good enough to be memorable. We had another opportunity to dine at Compline this week and again, it was a great experience. We had service from both the manager and our waiter, which worked out just fine as the restaurant filled up. We had the Crudo again, this time Mt Lassen Trout. Well presented and the flavor was wonderful. Next we shared the Superior lamb chops and snap peas with fresh mint. Again, lamb cooked and seasoned beautifully and the snap peas had a nice blister yet were crisp and yummy. We finished with a rhubarb upside down cake. Small portion, a little sweet, I was looking for that balanced tart from the rhubarb, but still tasty. We love that Compline uses a conscientious approach to food sourcing and uses the service charge approach so they can provide living wages and health insurance for all the staff, including the kitchen folks. read more

We initially made lunch reservation for a party of 5, but we were still full from the previous wine tasting with snacks. Instead, we ordered appetizers with cocktails and wine. We ordered duck fat fries, chicken liver mousse and crudo. The duck fat fries was so delicious that we ordered another one. Our server was really nice and knowledgable about her wine. Tucked in behind the hustle and bustle of First St in Napa, you'll find this amazing restaurant. Super cool vibe, but the food? Definitely put down the shopping bags and step inside. I had the crudo which tonight was big eye tuna, plum and arugula - with a dash of Calabrian chili. Melt in your mouth amazing, while the chili left a nice kick. Whatever you do, DO NOT say no to the duck fat fries. O.M.G. And that little dipping sauce is.... Addicting. Super fun, very eclectic wine list, with some local wines... but try branching out! I love trying new restaurants and will sometimes even try a new restaurant despite single star reviews (like this place). I really wanted to like this (over priced) place that I selected for my sister's birthday dinner but Compline was a total disappointment from beginning to end. A credit card is required to make the reservation and I have no objection to this, but my expectation is that I will be seated at my table upon (or close to) my arrival. After waiting 25 minutes we ended up eating at a wall near the bar. The waiter eventually brought water and takes our wine order. We eventually received our wine and our food orders were taken. The wine was very good as were the duck fries we'd ordered as an appetizer. Once the dinner finally arrived, I ordered another glass of wine (that never arrived). My sister had the rye cavatelli (small portion with too much duck for the amount of pasta). I had the new york strip (cold, lacking seasoning, served in a flavorless sauce, next to a disappointing root tian). After attempting to choke my meal down, I pushed the plate aside and chatted with my sister as she finished her meal. The waiter was never seen again until I asked another server to bring a box (so I could take the rare meat to my dog) and the check. The only good things I can say is this place has nice ambiance, nice extensive wine list, and tasty duck fries. After picking up our wine club supply from Artesa, Gayle and I wandered over to Napa town for Lunch at Compline. I had made reservations a couple days before on Open Table, as I also wanted to make sure that the restaurant was dog-friendly. Downtown was pretty busy and maybe a little more so due to a peaceful Pride/BLM rally in front of City Hall. Hence, we kept our masks on until comfortably seated outside and pretty well shielded from yesterday's gusty winds. Tables were easily 6 feet apart, all the staff were masked, and when the first serving of water was brought (via dish) to the dog, we knew that we were going to have an enjoyable early afternoon. Gayle and I both chose "The Burger" (sans bun for her) and a shared order of Duck Fat Fries. Both were delicious and so much so that putting ketchup on either of them almost seemed like a culinary crime. OK, lock me up! To drink, there was refreshing sparkling water on the table, plus our adult beverage choices of Brother Thelonius (North Coast) beer for me and a very nice Mac Forbes Pinot. Our only complaint of our stay was the occasional screeching of a kids playing in the courtyard as the parents enjoyed Lunch. However, that eventually subsided and after the shade umbrellas were secured a bit better (wind related), Gayle and I had a fine time hanging out together. read more

The design & decor are also a charm. There is seating inside & out as well as a bar. & the wine isn't so bad, depending on your price range. It's affordable. The fact that there's small bites on the menu gives this place an extra oomph factor. The employees aren't so bad either. They engaged in conversation & are friendly. I found Compline in the Michelin guide, and it received decent reviews at a reasonable price point for wine and dinner with friends after a round of golf. Although they were able to seat us about 10 minutes after we arrived (promptly at the time of our reservation), we hoped for a nice opportunity to eat and drink together. We ordered two bottles of wine, and then our waitress disappeared for about an hour. Although, someone kept refilling our waters. In fact, we drank a lot of water. I would guess that they refilled our water at least 6 times. We kept watching our waitress show up to the tables around us, but not us. I went inside to complain, and asked for a new server and was promised a new server. I explained that we had waited for nearly an hour and had not yet even received the first bottle of wine, nor had anyone visited us to take our order. Around the one hour mark, our original waitress returned with two bottles of wine. We were afraid that it would take an hour before even our first appetizer would arrive, so we decided to simply leave. Several of us flew from across the country to celebrate our friend's 40th birthday, and Compline disappointed. For a casual meal, we expected casual service--but we did expect service. The menu looked nice, and the wine selection seemed okay. We discovered that the restaurant closes at 9...perhaps our waitress didn't want to stay long enough to serve us. Very disappointing. Really wanted to like this place but it fell short for three reasons. 1) The wine pours are very low for the price (think taster pour size). 2) The steak and chicken portions are extremely small. 3) Upon getting the bill we were informed that the a 15% gratuity was added and our bartender told us it was for health insurance for back of the house so it implied we had to trip him as well (while we ate at the bar). Are we supposed to tip 30% - that seems ridiculous. First time here and tried it for lunch. Fried chicken sandwich, strawberry shortcake and a glass of a French Bourgogne (Pinot) I was not familiar with. Chicken sandwich was *very* good. It was a little smaller than I expected for $18, but was very tasty. Breading was light, which I enjoyed - sometimes the breading is so thick and overpowering but not the case here. Was a little greasy - but in a good way. Wine was ok. Napa Pinot noirs are more my style. Strawberry shortcake was good - not overly sweet. The location was not busy, and when we called to cancel because we were running late after a wine tasting, they informed us it would cost us $25 per person to cancel the reservation and made it sound like it was going to be a challenge to accommodate us later. There had maybe 20% of the tables seated when we arrived. Service was awesome. Cheese board - excellent. Cheddar polenta - excellent. Delicata squash - excellent. Duck fat fries- excellent. Hangar steak - awful. It was beyond salty and I adore salt. Garlic sauce - extreme garlic and I'm a garlic lover. Smallest portions ever. Menu did not say it was tapas. This should be your expectation.. Wine selection is marginal. Pilsner was excellent. Amazing server but when he split the bill, it wasn't a smooth transaction. In short, go somewhere else. Good appetizers you can find anywhere. I'm sure this server will end up at another establishment when this one closes for marginal food. I just celebrated my birthday today at Compline, and I must express my disappointment regarding the experience. Having eagerly anticipated the visit after watching a positive review on YouTube, my excitement was unfortunately marred by an incident involving the service. Estevan, the waiter at the bar, assisted us throughout the evening. However, when he returned the check for me to sign, my credit card was missing. This situation caused considerable distress, especially since I was visiting from out of town, and all my transactions were tied to that particular credit card. The search for the card took about 30 minutes, and Estevan and the manager said they were looking for it however, they were busy attending to other guests and despite their efforts, my card was nowhere to be found. Then out of the blue their front desk receptionist informed me that another guest had found my card on the floor and she gave it to me. Which now makes me think how my card even got there in the standard open area and we were sitting at the bar and payment transactions were also processed there. While I appreciate the recovery of my card, I couldn't help but feel uneasy about the potential risk to my personal information, considering the prevalence of cyber crimes. The manager assured me that their staff would not engage in such behavior, but my concern lies in the initial mishandling of the situation and their lack of urgency attending to this matter. I even ask Estevan to review their CCTV but said they did not have it in that area but I saw one there by the counter where they process payment. In a busy restaurant, losing a credit card is an unfortunate oversight, and the lack of a genuine apology compounded my frustration. Not only did this incident inconvenience me greatly, but it also prompted me to cancel my credit card for security reasons. I now find myself managing accounts where the card was linked, adding an extra layer of frustration to an already disappointing experience. To add to my disappointment, the food, particularly the carbonara, fell short of expectations--oversalted and lacking the anticipated flavor profile. This entire experience has left a negative impression, and regrettably, I cannot recommend this establishment based on my visit and will never come back. I sincerely hope they take this feedback constructively. Went on a Monday evening for a work dinner. Its quiet and cozy with a great vibe - would be a great date night location. We started with bread, a cheeseboard and deviled eggs - all amazing. The deviled eggs were uncomplicated and delicious. The cheeseboard was 3 cheeses and the right size for an appetizer for 3 or 4. I had the compline burger for dinner and it was fantastic. Often the fries aren't even cooked properly and sometimes they simply taste of vegetable oil. These had a rich duck flavor and were crisp throughout dinner. And my Porchetta!... Perfectly crisp skin that stuck to your teeth - the quandary is undercook pork belly and it's tough and chewy, overcook it and all that luscious connective tissue melts away leaving dry inner meat. The duck was perfectly cooked and flavored. The fish I ordered was a bit bland, nothing too impressive, but not horrible either. Texture wise for the fish, could have added something with a crisp or crunch to the dish. The duck fat fries are a must have!! Best fries ever. The dessert was excellent, not too sweet. As there are so many cool restaurants in Napa, it was unfortunate this was one of the few open late on Sunday so we decided to give it a try as my birthday dinner. Will provide my experience below. Initially - Open Table Reservation - easy and seamless, positive experience. -Hostess and initial ambiance top notch, she was attentive and paid attention to the notes that it was my birthday, and wished me a happy one. Upon being seated - we waited a good 10 minutes before we were addressed, and the hostess noticed (it wasn't crowded), so she came by and brought us water. Thank you again. Our waiter finally decided to show and didn't offer any advice or help on wines, so I asked for a glass of Sav Blanc and he was off. Halfway through dinner I asked about the Sunday "blind tasting" which I saw people around doing, which the waiter explained was a thing - and man I would have loved to do that! Why didn't he offer or suggest it? For food we tried the following: -Gazpacho - so much yes, I loved every single bite of this orange variety. Absolutely must get. -Duck Fat Fries - only because everyone raved about them. Honestly I was underwhelmed with all the hype. Basic fries with good aioli dipping sauce, wouldn't order again. -Lamb Meatballs - a little dry for my liking, even for lamb. Sauce wasn't anything special either. Wouldn't order again. -Pork Chop - came pre-sliced, which I thought was cool until I realized that one of the 6 slices (the biggest one) was just a bone. Um, thanks I guess? I will say the chipotle flavor was nice, and the pork was tender, but I wished I ordered something else. Service - it was so bad my bf almost complained, which never happens (and didn't happen). He came by a total of 4 times in an hour and a half meal. A runner actually got us fresh water as our carafe and glasses were empty for what seemed like forever. He never once mentioned the weekend specials, or explained any dishes. We had to ask if we had a question instead of him doing the typical experience, "have you been here? Do you want any recs?" etc. He seemed stressed, and he cared much more about his 2 four tops that he went above and beyond for about the bottles of wine they ordered. Sorry we are staying 30 mins away and one of us has to drive so we cannot order a bottle - I guess that makes us unimportant. He made no mention of my birthday or any offerings, I guess this isn't the place for that. I was disappointed bc another review mentioned spending their birthday there, and having a great time. That I guess is hit or miss and I missed it. The icing on the cake (that we didn't eat) was that he automatically charged us 15% gratuity. Not that we would have given less because we have class, but because it completely explained why he was so terrible - he knew he was getting a tip no matter what. What a total jerk. We decided to have dinner before our show around the corner. This place was clean and open. Our server was personable. The food was not good at all. We ate it all because it was EXPENSIVE for the portion, and I hate wasting food! The fettuccine needs black pepper, parmesan, and cream. The steak and its little sliver of potatoes were flavorless. Go somewhere else if you want good food. They charge 15% for service, so check your receipt before you double tip them. I didn't give them anything extra because that annoys me. They would've received 20% if they didn't automatically charge me 15%. They need to rethink their 15% service charge if they want their waiters to get more tips. But it's Napa, I'm sure there's a lot of people who go in there fine and come out buzzed, so they're getting over on them! read more

I had lunch here with a friend. We read the menu outside of the restaurant and decided we would both order the same thing for lunch, which we did. It was very early 11:45 or so. After a very long wait, the waitress came back and said they were out of what we ordered. I then ordered the fried chicken sandwich. It was a dry, flavorless sandwich, way too salty. I asked for some additional aioli. After a very long wait the manager came to the table to say that additional aioli would cost $2.00. We are local but had never been and doubt we will again. We shared the pork and shrimp lumpia and each had a salad. Picture a regular sized lumpia, these were 1/3 the size, tasty but small. The salads: little gems salads with tiny bits of bacon, hard boiled egg, and cucumber. When the description said hard boiled egg, I pictured just that, a hard boiled egg, maybe sliced or ? But it was probably 1/2 of a boiled egg shredded. The "little gem" lettuce was 4 long leaves of lettuce with the other stuff on top, sort of labor intensive because we had to cut every bite. We are accustomed to the service charge addition at other places, but they did not disclose it anywhere until the end. Most places show it on the menu. We were still hungry but.... I think if you like wine, just go for the wine and have your meal at one of the other many restaurants in the vicinity. read more

I thought the food was just absolutely wonderful. Our table got a wide variety of dishes and to me, every dish was executed perfectly. On one of our winery tours, an employee who is local said they thought the burger here was the best around. It sounded like one of the least exciting options on the menu and was a simple burger but it was truly a way better burger than you get most places. Excellent juicy meat with great flavor, perfect artisan bun, wonderful cheese, and the grilled onions and aioli just set it over the top. Everything ordered by the group was amazing and I'd certainly mention this place to anyone visiting Napa. I really enjoyed the wine list as well. At first, I saw they didn't have a ton of Napa Valley wines on the by the glass. I had originally committed to only drinking Napa wines while here and while they had options for that, I thought about it for a moment. Then, I ordered a French wine. I figured after a whole week of drinking nothing but Napa, it would be nice to try a French wine and compare. It was a great wine. What food we had was very good. My fiancé picked this place because the last time he was there. They had amazing Duckfat fries which I do say are very good. Could barely understand our waiter. The bodega rock cod fish was very good and had a very nice sear on it. There was just a little too much oil in the plate left over for my liking. The server was very polite and the food was presented well. The thing that turned me off was the automatic 15% service fee, which has nothing to do with the tip. I understand the rising costs of food and doing business since I own my own business. Raise your prices to reflect that don't add on an automatic fee. On top of the 15% fee we were taxed on it. And then expected to add a tip on top of that so we're looking at about 35% extra fee to eat out. I'm sorry but I don't think we'll be back. read more

We were told that as soon as it was ready, we would be move to the table. We ordered wine, appetizers and our entrees and still we were never moved to our table. The wine was nice and the Duck Fat Fries were delicious! The rest of the meal was not worth the the inconvenience of sitting in a bar stool at a side table facing a wall or the price they charged for it. Our server was very pleasant at the start but towards the end of the evening his attitude and his lack of attentiveness became unacceptable. For how highly recommended Compline was, my friend and I were quite underwhelmed with the food and service. 1) We were seated in the indoor/outdoor space, which shockingly had quite a few flies. We had both eaten and done wine tasting outdoors without issue at any other business in Napa, but somehow only at Compline was our food and beverages under attack during our entire time at dinner. 2) Speaking of flies, our glasses were full (from an $80 bottle of champagne we had purchased from the restaurant) when flies attacked and died in our flutes. We pointed this out to our waitress, who changed out our full glasses with new empty ones, and did not attempt to compensate us for the undrinkable champagne for which we were charged in full. 3) We were surprised with a 15% mandatory gratuity on our bill, which had not been mentioned at the time of booking (on Open Table) nor on the menu. Our waitress informed us as she handed us the bill that the mandatory gratuity only went to front of house and the kitchen, and only an additional tip would go to her... 4) The food itself was fine, but nothing to write home about. Our favorite dish was the bread plate, which happened to be from Model Bakery down the street. The food did not warrant the high purchase prices. read more
