After 3 bites of bread I opened the bun and went back to the counter and asked if this was a regular or a small? They said regular. They asked if I wanted it remade and I said yes. She snatched it out of my hand and the replacement was no better. I sent a email to corporate customer service and asked how to attach pictures and got a form letter back saying "we will file this comment" with no way to attach. A solid 2 inches of sugar in the bottom of each of our teas. Parts of the sugar were still almost dry. It's like it was dumped in prior to ice and tea being poured in. When I called to complain the manager said he doesn't see how that could be possible, maybe the bottom of the urn... no this was literally a solid two fingers of pure sugar. I grew up in Greensboro and this was the Cook Out I used to go to when I was a kid. Coming back to NC after 16 years I was really looking forward to coming back to Cookout especially since there aren't any in California. I was extremely disappointed by my spicy chicken sandwich, the patty itself was really thin and dry. The customer service was not great, I was ask to hold at the drive thru speaker for over 5 minutes with no updates and a line of cars behind me. You'll find all these things at pretty much any Cook-Out location, this one is not an exception to that. Though I have found at this location, the quality of the service can vary wildly. This spot seems the most busy as an after-hours Cook Out option. From dinner time to 3 in the morning, it is jumping, and you're going to have to wait a long time to get food. Sometimes the line even spills out onto the main street. There is no dine-in option at this location. You can either do the double drive-thru, which is very tight for larger vehicles in the outside lane, or you can walk up to the window. read more

We are not from North Carolina and so we are staying at a hotel close to the Gate City location. The drive-through attendant was very rude to us. They didn't have something at this location that one of us wanted and so it took us a minute to figure out what we wanted. The attendant started rushing us (with attitude) so we didn't even get the correct order to her because we were all flustered with how rude she was being. She didn't read the order back to us, didn't give us any napkins, straws or spoons for the items we ordered and didn't ask if we needed sauce for our chicken tenders. Wow - Avoid this location of this restaurant chain...talk about a miserable experience!! Not sure what's up with the moral at this place, but in my opinion, adding just a basic level of nice would be a huge improvement and major step forward! Just think, what if, they actually attempted to show some appreciation for their customers!! This is primarily a North Carolina chain, with a few spots in Tennessee, Virginia, and South Carolina. It was started in Greensboro, and now has over 100 locations. They specialize in char-grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, NC BBQ, milkshakes, no inside seating, and double sided drive thru windows that are a nightmare for the old, the young, and those hung over. The hamburgers are pretty darn good, with just enough grease to make it interesting. Go with the "Cook-Out" style; leave the "Western" style alone. The hot dogs are also char-grilled, and are actually pretty good - nice chili. But they are served in those Styrofoam coffins - dogs should be properly, lovingly wrapped - foil, wax paper, or even napkin - but no Styrofoam. The NC BBQ is not bad, but definitely not prepared in house, and nowhere near NC's best - some folks might want to make note of that, and try NC BBQ at a real NC BBQ joint. As to the milkshake, just go with the Hershey's Chocolate, everything else is second place, at best. read more

This is literally the worst cookout I have ever been to. We was in the line for over 45 minuets. They couldn't take an order right. Had to repeat it multiple times. They cut the speaker off in the middle of us ordering and started taking the other lines order. Once we got our food, they didn't give us our drinks or milkshake and acted like we didn't even order it. They don't know how to make sweet tea. I got a burnt ass grilled chicken sandwich (and it was supposed to be a crispy chicken sandwich) and soggy ass fries. The only thing they seemed to know how to do right was corn dogs, which isn't hard considering they are frozen anyways. Anyone who rates Cook Out as lower than five stars is clearly some kind of kitten-hating Communist*. These are the best burgers I've ever eaten. It beats In-N-Out, Shake Shack, 5 Napkin - you name me any burger joint and Cook Out blows it out of the water. I don't care if they're doing pagan sacrifices inside those tiny buildings, if that is what's making the food so delicious. The burgers are TDF (I go all-out and order my burger "Carolina style," with chili, onions, and mustard. But they're also amazing with all the normal fixings), the hot dogs are amazing (and the corndogs too), and the sides are all the most delicious, greasy, awesome sides you can possibly invent. The hush puppies in particular are INCREDIBLE. And the milkshakes! They must have at least twenty flavors, with a few seasonal ones thrown in. I wouldn't recommend getting a burger and a shake, as it might kill you, but damn...those are some excellent milkshakes. My favorite is the Mint Chocolate Chip (after eating all the milkshake part, there's a good two inches of chocolate shavings too big to go up the straw hiding in the bottom of the cup - yummmmm). So what if the buildings are small and you only have the option of walking up to the window and placing your order, or going to the drive-thru? It's worth it! Cook-Out on Summit was the go-to spot when I was a student at NC A&T State University. Nothing helped fuel all-night study sessions more than a Carolina dog tray with rings and fries(always had to add the Cajun seasoning for that extra kick!) with one of their wicked Oreo, Snickers or M&M shakes alongside. The dogs are chargrilled(of course) and easily beat out the legendary Yum Yums on Spring Garden. The burgers??? Man, oh, manishewitz.. Forget that McDonalds, Wendy's and Burger King(and I'm assuming Sonic is still there) are all within a stone's throw. Cook Out has the best burgers on the strip hands-down! I always order mine the same way-add grilled onions, lettuce, ketchup and mayo. Thick, homestyle and juicy, they make the neighbors look absolutely miserly. What kept this review from being a 5-star sweep? I love BBQ, and I guess my affinity for Stamey's and Short Sugars(Reidsville) swayed my tastebuds. Cook Out's BBQ lacked flavor and was pretty dry.
