Copra: being a South Indian myself, I had to try this unique take on South Indian dishes by Chef Srijith Gopinathan. I do have to say I'm a vegetarian, and the menu seemed heavy on meat dishes in general. But of the items we tried, the crispy sambal peppers was out of this world. The Dahi Vada was decent. As main item we had kurma, Kerala porotta and appam, porotta was spectacular. Kurma was ok, I feel it would've been better just to have the authentic Kerala kurma. My son had plain dosa and it was wonderful, so was the coconut chutney that came with it. I also loved the filter coffee. I did not like my cocktail (some jaggery cocoa thingy) much. As dessert my son had the peach sorbet which he enjoyed, we also tried another item which had a cardamom taste, my husband enjoyed it. Customer service is slow but respectable. Overall promising and unique take on South Indian food.

The ambiance is great! Very aesthetically pleasing and decorated beautifully. The service was also pretty fast. The restaurant itself is pretty hard to get into so make sure to have a reservation well in advance. For apps, we got recommended the Rasam poori, Vadai chat and shrimp vennai roast. We thought the Rasam poori was okay. The chat and shrimp were definitely worth getting. For the entrees, we got the black cod, gongura korma and masala dosa and chicken biryani. The gongura dish surprised us all and became our favorite! Second would be the fish and then Malasa dosa. The chicken biryani wasn't our favorite. Overall, good place to try for sure! Pricing can be around 25-30 per entree and $15-20 for the apps so definitely recommend going in a group so you can try multiple things.

I've had dinner at Copra multiple times and have tried at least half of the dishes on the menu. Everything I've tasted so far has all been delicious. You really can't go wrong here. The food here is innovative, full of flavor, and high quality. Cocktails are pretty unique and tasty as well. Ambiance is elevated, although I prefer the main lower level floor more than upstairs. Highly highly recommend making a reservation because this place does get booked up.

I am always a bit skeptical about expensive indian cuisine - however I really did enjoy the food here! The sauces were amazing and a good amount of vegetarian options. For two it was close to $150 so it is pricy. I don't know if I would go back but it was great to try once. Lots of ceiling on two floors and very beautiful interior. The service is great as well.

For me, the restaurant week menu was really disappointing. At $90 (the priciest option of all), I was expecting so much more. The crab vada (not pictured) was literally the size of a half dollar coin. It was basically a tiny crab cake. I thought the poori were tasty, but someone in my party said it tasted like "drinking salsa" and I have to agree. It was nice there were a few bonus courses (benne dosa and a green mango thogayial). I liked the maddur vada the most, but the dish overall was too salty. I was excited for asparagus benne dosa to highlight the spring produce, but it was very bland. The tomato sauce rescued the dish, but the other sauces were not my favorite. Finally, the black cod pollichatu was very tender. But, it had literally maybe two bites of protein total. The sauce was also extremely spicy, so some people in my group couldn't even stomach it. The sauce was flecked with whole spices that were unpleasant to bite into (green cardamon and cloves). The jigarthanda had an off putting smokey flavor, which I think was from the nannari (the waitress said it was like root beer). To be fair, it may be the case that I just don't really enjoy this genre of cuisine. The textures of each dish and flavors were not enjoyable for me. The ambience would make for a good date night or special occasion dinner. The service was very friendly and fast, but I personally won't be back.

Was taken here with family over the weekend. The interior design was beautiful and the staff was amazing. However, if you're looking for options with minimal spiciness with food, you might want to go elsewhere. I really appreciated that the person serving us tried their best to help some of us try lease spicy food but aside from some of the bread/rice dishes I wasn't able to experience the food as best I could. I know that's not their fault since I was brought here by family. My only other biggest complaint was being seated near a rowdy family that let their kids scream and run all over the place which ruined the experience at times. I wish there was more that could've been done or asked the parents or something. Other than that, it wasn't too bad.

Fine dining Indian food in San Francisco right across the street from AMC/ Japantown. High ceilings with beautiful earthy decor. We came in on a Friday around 8:30 pm and was able to snag a table for two immediately. It was packed more lively than intimate. The food had the pops of spice and flavor that you would expect in Indian cuisine. Each dish was beautifully presented. It is on the higher end of price but I've seen higher in the city. Staff was friendly and welcoming. Not pretentious. Parking can be tricky. I was able to find street parking a couple streets down. There is a parking garage but it was full by the time we got there.

Hello. Are you craving Indian food and want to try something new? Come with me to experience Copra in San Francisco. The first thing to order is the family style. This will give you an introduction to a variety of many Indian home cooked meals. First two dishes are the Gunpowder Goli Vada and Rasam Poori. I find that these dishes had so much spice and flavor. Next up, we have The Thattukada Fried Chicken. It was very crispy and savory. After that, we had the Dindigul Style Chicken Biryani, the Kerala Shrimp Marigo Curry, and the Beef Ularthiyathu. Every dish in this family style option was delicious and memorable. At the end of the course, we tried Cardamom Pave dessert. It was very sweet. We also tried a few drinks, such as the Honey Dove, Jaggery Sour, Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger 21 Riesling, and Watalappan. Overall, I recommend you come here with your special someone for a birthday celebration or an anniversary. Tina's Tip: Here is my tip. Make sure you reserve ahead of time as it can get very busy. Also, I would recommend doing the family style, so you can try more dishes. It's worth it.

I was truly impressed by everything, from the interior design to the food and service. From the outside, it looks like an ordinary vacant building, but the moment you step through the doors, it feels like you've been transported to a whimsical wonderland. We were seated upstairs, and our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the drinks, food, and desserts. We ended up ordering nearly everything they recommended, and every dish was not only delicious but beautifully presented. Each plate felt like a work of art. There honestly wasn't a single thing I didn't enjoy. I'm usually not much of a dessert person, but their sorbet was hands down the best I've ever had.

Love the ambience & decoration here, very tasteful & elegant. The service was good, food came in a timely manner. They never brought one of our dishes though... - The drinks were good, new flavors & tasty. Favorite was Darjeeling Bling. Lemon chilli was spicy & good, and Copra bloody had a good good flavor too. - Rasam Poori: it was tasty but too many nests for amount of goodies. It was a bit too cute. - Shrimp Vennai Roast: great flavor. Spicy but not too much, perfectly cooked & soft. Really enjoyed it. - Mysore Masala Dosa: good bread and potatoes. One of the chutney was great, one was ok and last one wasn't our flavor. - Chicken Biryani: we've had better. It had good flavors. The chicken was juicy & great flavor. It came with a sauce that added more flavor to it. - Lamb Shoulder Chettinad: it was cooked just right with good flavors & perfect amount of spicy for us. The parotta was so tasty we got a 2nd one. - Watalappan & Cardamon Pave: both deserts were good.

10/10 must try elevated Indian cuisine experience in San Francisco. We were so impressed with the ambiance, beautiful high ceiling and natural decor. Well lit and open. The service we received was incredible and everyone was very attentive to our needs. Drinks menu was comprehensive and they have a beautifully staged bar. The non-alcoholic cocktail menu was the most impressive I've seen. Actual thought out mocktails served in real cocktail glassware - you don't even miss the alcohol. The honey dove was fantastic and the white Amrit as well. The cherry lift was also good. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. Each dish is so thoughtfully curated with accoutrements like raita, chutney, or something special. Each dish is brought to the table with an explanation and instructions of the best way to enjoy it. Some of our favorites were: black cod, lamb, black truffle appam, rasam poori, the lettuce wrap appetizer, and all of the desserts. They even surprised us with a birthday scoop of peach sorbet ice cream with a candle and that was also yummy! Overall a lot of thought and care has gone into the menu, cocktails, hospitality experience, and vibe of this restaurant. We cannot wait to dine here again!

One of my favorite restaurants in SF. Consistently delicious, great service & ambiance, and I often bring out-of-towners here, as it's not too difficult to get a last-minute reservation. Must order dishes: - Perigord Black Truffle Soft Egg Appam - Black Cod Pollichathu - Rasam Poori - Vegetable of the day (3 dishes) - great flavors, love the variety paired with the other dishes

    Ask the Community - Copra

How much does an average dinner cost? Appetizer, main, dessert.

    $150+

Asking for a friend...does Copra do take-out or is it only dine-in?

Definitely done-in. I think takeout is also available. However we dined in.

Could a person dine alone here? Or are the dishes all family style?

You can dine alone, for sure. Some of the plates are bigger than others, but all the food is reasonable size.

For the dinner menu, is it a 3 course meal and you choose one item from each section? Does each item…

No, the menu is a la carte

Looking for a Safe parking place around?

Across the street at the Japan Centre parking garage

What kind of Jain options do they have (no onion, no garlic, no potatoes)?

    Not much

Is this restaurant kid / toddler friendly?

Hello, there wasn't a children's menu available, but I took both my kids (ages 7 and 2) and they had a wonderful time. The staff were welcoming and attentive to the kids. The restaurant is roomy and the noise level is loud so that helps.

    Do they have vegan items?

yes - you need to ask when ordering

    Do they serve halal?

Yes we do. Everything is certified Halal with the exception of the Bone Marrow & Rabbit dish. Please ask your server upon arrival as menu items do change and this information is current as of 9.20.23.

"Authentic" is one of those words that gets thrown around in reviews of ethnic restaurants without…read moremuch thought behind it. People use it to mean tasty, or familiar, or just different from a chain. That's not what I mean when I use it. To me, authentic means the food isn't pretending to be something it's not, that the flavors and intention come from a real place: heritage, roots, memory. My benchmark is simple. When someone who grew up eating this food says it tastes like home, that's the review that matters. That's the one I trust. Keeva earns that word. Rita is the heart of it, but Keeva is a family labor of love and you feel that from the moment you walk in. When the restaurant first opened she told us about the dream they had to bring the taste of home to the people of San Francisco, and you could feel it. Her kids were often playing in the restaurant when we'd stop by. That kind of detail tells you everything about what this place is. What made me a regular wasn't just the food, which is delicious, it was Rita coming to every table, checking in, teasing us about why she hadn't seen us in a while, steering you toward something you hadn't tried yet. She didn't do this selectively for certain customers. She did it for everyone. That kind of warmth is rare, and it's the whole reason eating out is worth doing in the first place. The dishes are made with intention. You can taste the difference between food that was assembled and food that was cooked with purpose. Keeva is the latter. And if you ask for spicy, prepare yourself. I used to live about a block away and this was my go-to. Moving out of the Inner Richmond meant leaving Keeva behind, and I genuinely miss it. If you're in the neighborhood, what are you waiting for? If you're not, it's worth the trip!
