Cork & Gabel is such a beautiful new restaurant in Corktown! When you enter through its huge steel door, you are greeted with colorful graffiti that then leads you to a beautiful wood, steel, brick open layout restaurant. I made a reservation for Thursday 5 PM for 4, and the restaurant was mostly empty, but quickly filled up as the night went on. The menu has a mix of Italian, German, and Irish influences, and they had an extensive beer and cocktail menu. We ordered the Piog An Aoire and Fried Dubliner Cheese as appetizers, and I ordered the Schnitzel BLT as my entrée, which came with a side of fries. We enjoyed our appetizers, even though the Fried Dubliner Cheese was basically glorified mozzarella triangles with a little bit of honey. The Schnitzel BLT was good, but it was definitely too large to eat as a sandwich. In addition, I thought my entrée and fries were quite bland? I just didn't get any flavor, and my honest opinion was that the food was nothing special. Service was slightly strange. Our waiter was pleasant, but he didn't seem to know much about the menu, nor the history of the building. While I wasn't too impressed with my first visit, I think the space has immense potential and I'm going to give the restaurant a second try, especially as the waiter said that they were coming out with a new spring menu. read more

What a great space you enter into via a really cool and different entrance. We came in on a Friday evening during prime time and was seated right away. They were busy, but were not packed at all. There were tables and bar seats available. Our waitress was amazing, friendly, and helpful throughout our stay which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. The beer menu was good. My wife had the cocktail Shift Drink and was very complimentary of it. She enjoyed it and recommends it to others. We started off with the Piog An Aoire appetizer. It was so amazing you may want to order two! Both of our appetizers were quite delicious. The C&G Buger was one of the better burger sandwiches I have ever had. All three of the sausages in the Sausage Sandwich Sampler were excellent. Each sausage was a unique flavor as you would expect for the regions they were based upon. They were quite tender and cooked just right. We topped off the meal experience sharing the Irish Waffle Bomb. All the flavors came through and combined into an amazing dessert. We went to Cork & Gabel for brunch on Easter. Everything was fantastic. I had the open face schnitzel. It was kind of like a spin on a benedict dish and the sausage gravy was some of the best I've had. We ordered the cinnamon rolls for the table. They were light and airy, sweet and delicious! I loved the ambiance, decor, food, and service. However, I do have some pet peeves. The restaurant is a pebble's throw from the renovated Michigan Central, so the restaurant is frequented by many senior citizens like me who visit the Central to rekindle their memories of the place during its heyday. Why does the C&G not have table menus? Many of us may not be facile with QR codes and small fonts on smart phones (or even own one). Are y'all trying to make a statement of some sort? Also, G&C doesn't have non-sugar sweetener for us diabetics to use in our coffee and tea. Is G&C trying to make some statement again? And finally, no anchovies for an otherwise wonderful Caesar salad. Hmmmm. But y'all are forgiven. :-) read more

Wife and I stopped here while bouncing around Corktown. We were impressed from the start. The entry appears to be an old large silo of some sort and really makes a statement as you enter the building. Must see! We sat at the bar because it is very inviting. If you sit facing the back of the building the the view out the window is the old Detroit Train Station and the Ambassador Bridge. Very cool view!! The inside itself looks very nice but overly fancy where you would need to be dressed to kill. It was cold out so we had jeans, winter coat, hat and we didn't feel under dressed. You could also come dressed up and not feel out of place. It has that unique feel. Bartender was great; really knew the menu and drinks! (very important for a new place). He told us all about the building, the owners, and some of the local history. We ordered a few craft cocktails and they were right on spot so we ordered a few more :) Menu looked good and had lots of Irish food but we had just eaten so only ordered the cheese appetizer which was delish. Basically fancy cheese sticks but much much better and drizzled with honey. Quality cheese too! Look forward to some of their cocktails and other meals. Decided to come for brunch based on a friends recommendation and we were not disappointed. We were lucky enough to arrive at a time where we didn't have to wait for a table. Ordered Spanish coffee which tasted perfectly made and visually lovely. Used our phones to order which is cool since their menu changes depending on what's available locally. Everything looked and tasted great. The seasoning on the potatoes was perfectly balanced so that even my foodie friend didn't think it needed anything more. I wished they were smashed a little more so there was more crispy surface but that's just me being super picky. I guess they are understaffed per the website but we didn't notice an issue. Stopped in for brunch on a Sunday around noon. Not to busy surprisingly and we got a table right away. Very cool space next to Two James Distillery. I got the Spicy Pork Belly Benny- It was very tasty, despite not being spicy at all! It could have used some more Hollandaise but it was quite good overall! Girlfriend got the C&G Omelette which was basically a very good western omelette but smothered in sausage gravy. Potatoes were kind of just smashed potatoes, I liked them, gf didn't really. Service was pleasant, but not lightning fast.. Two things we found slightly annoying- 1-Had to ask for more sugar/cream, as they only give you two sachets and a small thing of cream. 2-Same thing with the ketchup. They give you this tiny little metal pot of ketchup. Maybe just put out bottles, or get normal ramekins so you can dip it. I get it, you want to have a clean appearance and a nice presentation, but it makes more work for not only the diners but servers as well. I want to start by saying Cork & gabel's atmosphere is everything you would want in a restaurant, but the food was lacking for the price point. We started with the caprese salad which was underwhelming, lacking flavor. The type of mozzarella that was used wasn't the typical for a caprese salad and the change didn't make an improvement to the dish. (You can find a great caprese salad at Cornerstone on Woodward) My dish was the C&G Chicken. The chicken was moist, but under seasoned. The overall dish was good but nothing memorable that will leave u wanting more. The other entree ordered was the Guinness braised short ribs. This dish was more like a stew than described on the menu. The meat was quality, but instead of using potatoes in the stew they used gnocchi which was a poor choice. The meal was also served with "soda bread" which I had never actually heard of but had a subtly sweet and black licorice flavor. Overall we won't be returning, mediocre food with a high price point for most dishes that just weren't worth it. read more

YUM YUM YUM!!!! I highly recommend the mushroom risotto. We also had a caprese salad which was just okay the tomatoes were pretty mushy... oh. The brownie is huge!!! And delicious but for some odd reason it had a chocolate sauce on it but it doesn't come with ice cream... So when I got there the outside was a little uninviting but when u walk in the atmosphere changed really quick, there was graffiti spray painted on the door which the entrance to this place 1500 gallon metallic drum which is really cool to see in person, the tables are made from an old bowling alley from the 1900s, the wood used in the restaurant was from the 1800s, I mean everything in this place had a story. They had hidden items throughout the restaurant u had to find either by walking around or using ur eyes. It was like a scavenger hunt with dinner provided. The waitress (Amy) was phenomenal and very informational. She helped us with drinks and food items of what people have had in the past and what people like. Then I got the KBS beer which is a rare beer to get ur hands on and of course that is a 5 star beer. Then I had the C&G burger, so I like my burger Medium Rare, more rare then medium, the burger was cooked to perfection, I have NEVER had a burger fill me up and make me feel like I was eating from Heavens Restaurant but there I was eating at the table like a God, we also had appetizers which was a type of fried cheese (I cant remember the name of it), it was so good it didn't even have that fried taste. #COVIDreview I went to Cork and Gabel twice in one week while my mom was in town: it's that good that we had to go back. Their cocktails, food, and staff are all amazing. First visit we had bangers and mash and some steak thing with Irish boxtys. The bangers were amazing. I think we've all had sausages that we of questionable origin and quality, but that is not what this was. It was like the best meats and seasonings all combined to form a superior meat product. The next surprise was the potatoes. The potatoes they use must be magic and/or ultra local heirloom potatoes: they are fluffy and creamy and earthy and fresh tasting. No overgrown Idaho spuds here. But that leads me to my one wish for C&G-- that the menu was more a la carte or flexible. I want a trio of all the potatoes they do-- I want to try their potato salad but I didn't want to give up my boxty or the main that that comes with. And maybe a sampler of their various sausages. Or half plates. I understand with COVID, restaurants have to have limited menus but I hope someday I can mix and match the ultimate smorgasbord here. This place. Oh boy. I'm attempting to put words together that can accurate depict the awesomeness that is Cork & Gable. I only hope by the end of this that I was successful. The building is so interesting from the outside. This was the entire reason we stopped at this place while making our way through Corktown. From the street, it catches the eye in the intriguing shape and massive size of the building. The door is an old oil tank. It draws you in from every angle. Walking in, we knew we had stopped in the right place. With Edison bulbs everywhere and a semi-industrial revolution feel, the vibes coming out of the place we're surreal. We were seated by the staff and began looking at the menu on our phones... Then the waitress came... And everything changed. This staff is hands down some of the greatest staff I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. They are all playful and friendly and appear to truly enjoy their jobs. The bartender stopped over to say hi to our table, and then proceeded to help us in our beer tasting adventure. We realized quickly that he was passionate about his job, so after our first round of beer we asked if he would want to make us some special drinks. "Surprise us," we said. And surprise us, he did. The drinks were different and delicious. And the excitement on his face when he presented his works of art made them all the more enjoyable. We stopped in to this place for a quick drink, and ended up staying for hours until it closed. The greatest of kudos to this place. Keep it up. Visited this restaurant while I was in town, the first week they were open after the COVID closing. The tables were adequately spaced out, servers and staff wore masks, and you got your menu on your phone after scanning a QR code. We started with the Dubliner Cheese. The marinara and cheese were great, slightly on the salty side. I got the Shnitzel BLT and my husband got the Bangers and Mashed. Both were amazing, great portions. The Sun was finally shining and so does this place. We have frequented it several times and always wonder why we don't more often. Only a couple vegan options but the one I had today I think I may dream about. The portabello bennie was not only well put together but loved the flavor. The building is so rich in history and well put together too! We have never had a bad server, always friendly, helpful and attentive. Our 4th visit to this establishment so we feel there is merit to this review. The good : Food has been mostly good. Prices fall in line with other competing fare. Our last visit included 2 other couples and 3 of the 6 loved their meals, the other 3 felt so-so. Drinks : Always very well made cocktails but VERY pricey - see The Bad. Location/Ambiance-Excellent. Owners did a tremendous job in putting this place together. Great bar and cool history. The bad: Like many reviewers, we have found the waitresses to be very rude and unappreciative, including the chef/owner. They give off a sense of take it or leave it. We drive out from the suburbs 42 miles away to come to YOUR restaurant, and we don't appreciate the attitude. We love supporting small businesses, especially in Detroit. From the moment you walk in here, you can tell that careful planning and attention to detail was put into this establishment from the very start. For starters, the entrance is an old submarine! VERY COOL!! Your greeted with lots of repurposed items. (Think Heilmann Project vibes.) This is definitely a farm-to-table restaurant. Tons of brews on tap, local, micro brews, and handcrafted cocktails. Our server was excellent, extremely knowledgeable on all the mixed drinks, brews, appetizers, menu items, and desserts, s well as a little history on the building. We spoke with the manager who further elaborated on the interesting history of the owners and location. Ask when you visit! I didn't get many pictures because we were very hungry since we changed establishments last minute because of wait times, but we got right in here on a Friday night, no wait and plenty of tables available. We decided on wings and tried 4 of their homemade sauces-all delicious!! They were big, piping hot, and full of flavor. Then our entrees came. He ordered the lamb gyro with fries, and I ordered the CB? burger and fries. We were sharing with eachother tonight, and I like medium rare and he likes well done, so we got medium. There was barely and pink and it was cooked too much for me and he wanted a a little more cooked for him. Compromise! lol The fries were handcut and delicious like my brothers fairground French Fry stand. Simple yet so good! There were onion rings, mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, pickles (on the side), and thick cut crispy bacon on it. (Everything!) Absolutely delicious!! First time at this groovy Detroit Corktown restaurant and it won't be my last. Good location with lots of back lot parking. Seated right away at 5:45 on a Friday night. Our waiter, B.J. made the night even better with excellent service and his charming personality. Drinks were perfect...not a beer drinker, but they had a good selection. Whiskey selection was great!! Had the pretzel sticks as a starter. I had the Mizzy's Mac and Cheese. It ain't your Mother's Mac and cheese...it was better. 4 cheeses with onions and bacon. Also on the table was ordered the mushroom risotto, which is what I'll try next time. Friday and Saturday they have fish and chips, we got that, too. Super yummy.
