I came to this place for the first time with a group of girlfriends this morning for Sunday brunch, and I'm sad to only give this establishment three stars because it has such great potential to be a 5-star restaurant! The three stars are for the location/decor/ambiance, as it is such a unique building with such a storied history, and the restaurant had a really cool vibe. But the service was definitely lacking. Our server was... let's see... rude might be too strong of a word... Sardonic? Moody? Cold? Irritable? Maybe a combination of those. I told him something smelled delicious and if he had any idea what it was. He looked at me like I was crazy and said "it's called breakfast." Ok cranky. Maybe his dog just died or something. He also didn't seem to be very knowledgeable about the menu. By the end of our meal, his tone was softer but he had already pissed me off. The food was also just okay. I ordered an omelette and it was very runny. Maybe some people like that sort of thing, but I was left with a bunch of veggies in a puddle of eggs when it was all said and done. Food reviews from my friends include: egg white omelette was just okay, the stuffed French toast was like cake (so if you're into that, maybe that's a good thing for you) and the lamb benne was excellent. Cork & Gabel has been on my list of places to visit downtown. My boyfriend and I have been looking forward to it and finally made reservations to have dinner there at 7pm on Saturday. We called to confirm our reservation earlier in the day and they never made it but it wasn't a problem and because when we got there it was just around half full. I was surprised it wasn't busier considering Gold Cash Gold was packed. The service was incredible! Our server showed us historical pictures of the building and gave us a little history of the architecture around the restaurant. She asked us about our day and what we had planned for the night, she was so sweet! I also like that they have a little scavenger hunt on the back of the menu, something to do while you are waiting for your food that is interactive so everyone doesn't end up on their phones. Our food was just ok, we were hoping for a little more for the money. The prices are high which concerns me for when the Ford employees move in. There is going to be a huge lunch crowd and they aren't going to pay these prices. At the end of the day, I would recommend Cork & Gabel to a friend. read more

Visited last night with friends. BJ our waiter was very helpful with both the beverage and the food menu. If you want a quiet romantic dinner, this probably isn't the place for you, lots of atmosphere and fun people. Also, they will sit parties together, so if you are shy and retiring, this also might not be the place for you. We asked the server how spicy the cajan chicken pasta said and he said you will barely know if is cajan. It was so hot could barely eat it. Came for brunch and it was a sure winner. To be honest, it was a bit of a 'destination' meal as we sweated it out walking through cork town on a hot and muggy Detroit day. Nevertheless, it was worth it as we were greeted with smiles when we entered the gigantic tanker that they call an entrance. As for the food? Filling and flavorful! It's a good spot to stray away from classic and do a legit pork schnitzel with a couple of eggs on top. Their bennies are for real too. Go with the pork belly. And the spicy Bloody Mary hit the spot too. It's all in the accoutrements. FYI-I've been next door to the Two James Distillery and it kicks butt too! Stopped in for dinner and drinks at the bar last Friday. Service was outstanding, but it was also eerily empty when we went. Started with the Fried Dubliner Cheese. It was good, but like almost Irish food I found it lacking the sharp flavor I like in cheeses. I had the mushroom risotto which was good, and my husband had the veggie burger. After a great bike ride on Belle Isle, my friend and I always choose a different eatery. Now I had been here for dinner but never considered lunch , but what the heck. We were pleasantly surprised by the brunch menu. I especially liked the choices for different eggs "bennies". My friend chose the vegan omelet. I chose the Lamb Bennie. Both were presented well and more than enough quantity. Service was also attentive and courteous and patient since my friend is blind and the menu obviously had to be explained. Visited Cork and Gabel last night before touring Michigan Central, it was delightful and delicious. We were seated right on time for our reservation, food came out fast. The server was either having a bad night or doesn't enjoy her job, she was not friendly at all. The chef and kitchen staff were lovely, kindly came over to discuss a request for an adjustment and it was fun to be able to see into the open kitchen. I tried the wild mushroom ravioli which was delicious with lots of wild mushrooms within and on top, the pub salad was creative and satisfying with a delicious dressing and lots of fresh, delicious vegetable add ons, not your basic restaurant salad. Other meals in our group were shrimp and lobster-great, the fish and chips good but a lot, the only disappointment was the Schnitzel BLT which was a bit dry. The produce in the dishes is locally sourced from a nearby organic farm and tasted like it - really fresh and flavorful. Our only negative was the cranky (or tired) server, and it was pretty loud due to the open ceiling/architecture, which is part of the charm of the former bakery building but somewhat challenging for conversation. Overall, highly recommend, especially given its location and the quality of the food and skillful kitchen staff. read more

I don't know what happened to this place. I used to come to cork and gabel twice a week -- once for dinner and once for brunch, because I live down the street and the food is amazing. The food is STILL amazing (love the shrimp and lobster ravioli and the chorizo breakfast bowl they have). Not to mention, their burgers, wings and desserts are amazing as well. Along with that, they have great drinks. I recommend the Southwest and the Fords Revival. Two of my favorite cocktails in the city. However, lately the staff has been so.... mean. The hostess (I think she started working there when the restaurant reopened after the pandemic closing -- but unsure) is just rude. She barely says hi, and instead of giving direction she just looks at you. Like, she told us to wait 10 minutes for a table. No problem. But then instead of telling us that we need to wait outside, she stared at us until I asked her. Friday, I came to the restaurant with my friend and the server was really short with us and always walked away while we were mid sentence. He seemed so annoyed with us, but once restaurant was less busy, he tried to be nice again. So maybe he was just kind of rude because he was busy and they may have been understaffed. The worst person of them all was the male host (I think he was the manager or something standing in for a host). He was incredibly rude and made us feel like we were inconveniencing him. Very short and curt. This is not to mention a couple weeks ago, my boyfriend came with his friends and witnessed a bartender screaming at one of the people at the bar. Cork & Gabel; great food; however very slow service on 6/19/24. Made reservations for 6:30 pm (6 people). Since I'm the one that made the reservations and I arrived at 6:15 pm. we are told we'd be seated at 6:30 pm - no problem. We did 20 minutes to get water still not too bad. 10 minutes later we were able to place our drink orders and we said we would like to place our dinner orders at the same time. We were told by the staff that they can't take your dinner order right now because we have a party of +40 and another large party. Then we're told we could order appetizers and place meal orders later; which was a little frustrating as I really wasn't planning on ordering an appetizer order. Trying to work with them we placed appetizer orders and then five minutes later were told you can place your dinner order now. So they did try to accommodate us as we were little upset about the situation. We placed our dinner orders; however, I got stuck paying for three additional appetizers for the table, which we really weren't looking to do. I do not blame the server. She was doing her best. So I guess I won't be going back there anytime soon, but there are many other new restaurants in downtown Detroit to explore! read more

Great experience! Cork and Gabel is excellent. We went on Black Friday after shopping downtown. First, we arrived an hour before our reservation and they accommodated us just the same. The atmosphere is very cool. Industrial and open. The drink menu is great with several signature cocktails and a large draft list. Our server, Ariana, was outstanding. We started with the Life of a Potato which was so good we almost had to order it again. We also enjoyed the Caprese and the feature sausage which were delicious as well. We sat at the bar and the bartender, Jake was AMAZING. He kept our glasses full (both water and cocktails) and provided awesome recommendations as well. This new Corktown spot gets a lot of things right. The building is beautiful, the food is delicious and there are a decent selection of drink options to suit everyone. Sitting by the kitchen was entertaining and offered a sneak peek at all the different dishes on the menu. Head Chef and owner Matt made sure we were well taken care of and gave us some interesting history about the building. As a native Irish speaker, I won't hold it against our server that he couldn't pronounce our appetizer (pióg an aoire) properly. It's not the easiest of languages. read more

The inside of this place has an awesome classic feel with a very artistic and cool entry. The bar staff are nice and the mixed drinks are great! The Southwest cocktail has a spicy/ sweet margarita taste and you can't go wrong with the County Cork. I can't comment on the food because we came for a late night cocktail, but we will definitely be return customers. This was our first time at Cork and Gabel, and we loved it! the building itself is worth a visit. When we entered through the interesting door, we were greeted in a friendly manner. We didn't have a reservation, and we were seated in the back room which had an excellent view of the old train station which looks beautiful! We ordered the dubliner cheese appetizer, the winter salad, and 2 entrees - mushroom ravioli and Irish Whiskey chicken with a peppercorn cream sauce - all delicious! Dessert was The Mayflower which are small ricotta donuts with 3 sauces - atwater decadent porter chocolate ganache, Slane Irish whiskey carmel, and Bavarian cream. The sauce amount is so minimal that you really can't taste the different flavors, and really not enough of it for 4 donuts. Please serve these with more sauce - my only complaint on a wonderful dining experience. Server Kendra was great, too. Note: they have their own parking lot! read more
