This restaurant has not been improved or updated since the early 90s when I first visited. I was shocked to see rusty and old plumbing exposed under the sink, the toilet wouldn't flush unless you held the handle, and there were no paper towels in lieu of the hand dryer that did not work. Customer service was lacking and the potatoes were greasy. I was disappointed with the lack of care the owners put into the ambiance and aesthetics. Came here for lunch and as usual it was packed! They don't have reservations but they do have a list to write your name on for a seating. We waited about 10 minutes for a seat. The chips and salsa were a hit! They are not complimentary so you have to ask for them for an additional $4. I never mind because they are worth it! We ordered and Despite the huge crowd our order came out in minutes. The waiter was very attentive and efficient. Several people were picking up placed takeout orders and I was surprised to see them in and out the door in under 6 minutes with everything perfectly hot and secure. I ordered the enchilada and the sauce is oh so yummy! A must try! Everything I try here is so good and the menu is huge and very inexpensive! We're regulars here, what can I say? If there's one thing I'll order, other than tacos, at a Mexican restaurant-- it's enchiladas. More specifically, cheese enchiladas. My friends and I joke that I could easily be a vegetarian since I don't care much for meat sometimes... but of course, I can't live without tacos either. Every time I go to this establishment, as much as I say I'd like to try something new, something different-- I always end up ordering these cheese enchiladas. There's no way. I crave that sauce at least once a month, if not more. I neeeeed to know how it's done!! Their rice and beans are really good as well. Add their spicy salsa (it's not that spicy but I love the flavor) and it's the perfect meal paired with a nice, refreshing, fizzy coke! They do not offer complimentary chips & salsa, but that's okay. The amount of food is plenty! The service is quick, the servers are as nice as they can be, and there's plenty of seating available... but they do have their moments and fill up so you'll be waiting in line, but not for too long, just jot your name down. Because they are in such a small, hidden location, parking may be sparse... Aside from the alley parking behind them, I usually park in the next neighborhood over, a very short walk. My trick to trying something new is to invite as many different people there with me as I can because they will try other things on the menu and I can nibble off them... win-win! I've tried their Chilaquiles, Chile Relleno, Ground Beef Taco, Chorizo and eggs plate, and Pozole. That's all I can remember at the moment. Some pictured, some not. All very good, yes, even the taco. It's not the typical, authentic tacos we're used to but it was still good... wouldn't be my first choice though. Who are we kidding... we all know my first choice! Cheese Enchis for the win! We had dinner there with my mom she is 85 years old . We ordered cheese enchiladas all three of are orders were awful . The tortillas were hard . I told the waitress her name was Nancy.That our order was bad. She responded, well.We have not had any complaints all day today. I ordered two chicken enchiladas , and one cheese enchilada with a side of rice and beans. The corn tortillas were stale and chewy, and the beans and rice tasted far from fresh. Not long after eating, I began to feel nauseous. The ingredients were low quality, and the dish relied heavily on cheap cheddar cheese to cover up the lack of seasoning and freshness. Given the price, the meal felt like a rip-off or a scam. I did not receive the quality advertised and left feeling disappointed and physically unwell. The restaurant appeared to be falling apart, from the floors, to the cracks in the ceiling, and to the food stained walls were absolutely disgusting and I will not be coming back. read more

It's been too long since we ate here, but managed to enjoy two late lunches in the past week. Consistency brings longevity and the food here has changed little over the years. Generous portions, well-prepared, not too spicy (but mild & spicy salsa versions are both offered. They stay busy; mid-afternoon, mid-week and the main dining room was full. As we were leaving, at nearly 4:00, newly-arriving customers necessitated the side room to open. Service was great, attentive & efficient. We can recommend the ground beef taco (3) plate with beans & rice, also the shredded beef tacos, chili rellenos, and cheese enchiladas. Plates are brought piping hot to the table, another plus. Boy this is our go to place especially when we have out of town visiting! But we went yesterday it was very disappointing the service was slow! Which I'm not blaming the service people because she was great after we were waited on. The food was not as good as it was usually. We had a very big order to go and ours as well! While there's a lot to like here and the food was good, I likely will not return. The service was excellent and I don't think I'd ever had a more keyed in waitress but the location just isn't acceptable. It's too packed out, too exposed parking on the street and it appears that getting your car side swiped here is highly likely. The 'line' to get a table feels like you're in a police 'line up' to be identified for some crime. You sign in and wait up against a wall. The restaurant is packed out. The food is inexpensive and pretty good. The value is incredible, actually. The combo: chicken taco, shredded beef, enchilada, tamale with rice and beans hit the spot but I didn't eat some of it because it just wasn't flavorful. The tamale was better than some places put out but I wouldn't have it twice. It was lukewarm at best. The enchilada sauce was GREAT but the chicken taco was lack luster and mostly left uneaten. The chicken was tasteless. A sad, first-world decision and I was not interested in taking anything home. The hashbrowns were soggy, thick and not very tasty. Would NOT get those again either. my plate was good overall, i ordered the "divorced eggs" or "huevos divorciados". two eggs how you want them topped with chile verde and chili colorado, the eggs are "separated" on each side of the plate haha, also get potatoes, refried beans. i think the flavor was really good but the meat to the chili colorado was rubbery but the flavor was yummy. i think the flavor was really good but the chile verde sauce is very juicy like water and i dont like that. the salsa or chili in the bottle is really good too not hot just flavorful. this place is on belmont so be aware of that for the neighborhood where most people would park due to the small lot in the back is always packed and i dont want to get stuck back there with the terrible parking jobs some people do. read more

This popular eatery in Southeast Fresno has been prominently featured on ABC30's Dine and Dish. The current owners kept the old restaurant name, which was an American-style diner, in the early 90's and has been serving delicious Mexican or Mexican-American food to its legions of loyal patrons since. My go-to dish at a dine-in Mexican restaurant is usually the enchilada and taco combination plate. Although I feel there are few things better than authentic street-style tacos, I love when restaurants offer this combination platter with the gringo style hard-shelled corn tacos which are served with seasoned ground beef or shredded beef or chicken - along with chopped tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and shredded cheddar cheese. The old Mexican restaurants where I grew up dining at with family in Sacramento always served them this way so it has much to do with the nostalgia factor as it is a personal preference. I like to order this combination with beef tacos and chicken enchiladas. The enchilada was prepared with a Tex-Mex style brown sauce. It was filled with juicy, well-seasoned chicken and salsa. The tortilla did not fall apart too quickly in the sauce or get too soggy and it was covered with melted cheese. The ground beef of the hard-shelled taco was also well-seasoned and the meat was juicy. The hard-shelled corn tortilla was flaky, crunchy, and good-sized, which helped to keep all that meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese inside and intact as you bit into the taco without it falling apart. The plate was served with delicious rice and refried beans, along with both green and red salsas and complimentary chips and pico de gallo. The combination plate was solid: tasty, comforting, no-frills. The flavors were not something that "blew your socks off" but I would order both the taco and enchiladas again. The menudo, on the other hand, was a real pleasant surprise. This Mexican stew prepared with beef tripe is usually only served on the weekends. The red chili pepper and tomatoey base had a deep flavor and also had just the right amount of hominy and diced onions, and a garlicky essence. Good menudo always starts with the tripe. I noticed it was thoroughly cleaned and well prepared here from the taste and color. Cut into bite-sized chunks, the tripe was very tender and infused with the flavors of the broth and the hominy. It was not foul-smelling, slimy, or overly chewy which is often associated with bad or poorly cooked tripe. Chopped cilantro and lemon slices were provided to garnish and squeeze into the soup and served with piping hot flour or corn tortillas. It was delicious, maybe the best bowl of menudo I have had so far in Fresno. Family-owned and operated. You can tell the dishes are home recipes and served with a lot of pride. Excellent customer service and the prices are all very reasonably priced. Expect a long line during peak lunch hours. The restaurant also closes at 7 p.m., about an hour earlier than most other restaurants nearby. They open at 6 a.m., however, which makes them an ideal spot for both American-style breakfast or Mexican desayuno. read more

Great food, but very bad customer service from the older waitress today. I was charged nearly double the price for having my food placed in separate containers on a to-go order. I have been to this restaurant before for both dine-in and takeout, and I have never been charged extra just for having my food separated onto two plates or containers. The elderly waitress used her own discretion to charge me this way, and she made it a point to say that she wrote it up that way when I asked about it. The waitress who rang me up seemed confused by the charge, but she was kind, sympathetic, and apologized for the way I was charged. read more
