My friend and I went there to have lunch before going to work. We were sad quickly, but it took a while for somebody to come to the table. We gave the waitress our order and we waited a while for the food and beverage. I ordered a rare burger with the supposedly homemade beer, battered onion rings. I got a well-done burger with breaded onion rings. When I try to get help to fix this problem, I got a gentleman's attention another server who basically acknowledge me and walked by me to get the waitress. I guess they do not work together and pool tips. It's the it's not my table attitude when I finally got her to come back to fix it, it was sort of like she basically questioned me and whether I did order it rare, but my friend are shorter. I did I finally got the burger, and it looked like it had been mashed up with no flavor and gray. I took one bite of it and wrapped the rest to go. This used to be a great place with great burgers and service. It's totally gone downhill. I guess it's relying on its reputation where there's a tourist that will always walk in. I don't recommend it. Let me not forget the table next to me a four young men who wanted their check and ask the server for separate checks. Yes, I know in a busy place. It is annoying. They do not have an updated system where they can just split it evenly they are old-school still, and that's a pain he did it, but then he proceeded to complain in a side station to his associates about it and a manager on the floor, you should be careful about your surroundings and who can hear you. I am in the service industry and for me to get upset over something it takes a lot because I know we all make mistakes but teamwork in good communication would make this place work smoother and you would probably turn tables faster maybe with all the business you do you should upgrade your system that can expedite payment and be able to give people separate checks graciously. This was a total letdown. Also on your menu, please be honest take off the homemade and other adjectives to describe your food that are not true. Also, you do know it's illegal to charge a percentage for when people use debit cards to pay. I understand a percentage is on regular credit cards, but you cannot do that on debit cards. I would stop in here many moons ago to grab a burger and soup after completing a night shift at around 3am. Since then the hours have changed, and I can get lunch in full daylight hours. Old school is the vibe in this diner / coffee shop on Broadway between the Cooper Union and the NYU campuses. That includes much of the clientele. Unlike the Thai eatery I lunched in the other day, many customers looked to be older than me. This place looks old and New Yorky. The split pea soup was hearty with croutons, just as I remember. The burger was thick but not as flavorful as memory serves and was not juicy when bit into. Maybe not as fatty as would be ideal. With Cozy now closing at the end of the month after serving the neighborhood residents and students for over 50 years, it is another great institution that bites the dust due to rising rents. Patrons have been falling prey to the constant rising prices across board for every purchase including dining out. And even a longstanding neighborhood pillar that specializes in reasonably priced meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night eats will succumb to the greed of real estate companies. Foodies and the younger generations will not lose sleep over the loss of a diner that might not serve a wagyu burger or a pretty looking mediterranean bowl, but this NY classic has served those of us who graduated in the late 90s and early 2000s with warmth and hospitality over the years till the very end. Of course we had to try this as this is a famous restaurant and featured in several movies. This is definitely a typical diner experience. Their menu is quite extensive and they have a lot of food. Of course we had to try two of their soups. They were rather salty, but tasted good. Definitely the split pea was better than the butternut squash. There was a time when there were lines going out the door waiting to get a seat at Cozy Soup 'n' Burger but that era is long over. After the COVID pandemic, the crowds largely disappeared and never came back. Why? Hard to say, but sadly this means Cozy does not get anywhere near the business it used to and that is a damn shame. I have a very specific affinity for diners. Give me a long counter with several stools, booths and random tables filling in gaps in between. I love a menu that lets you order anything from an awesome breakfast to a tasty burger. Cozy checks off all these boxes and it is always a delight to visit. My last couple visits have been for breakfast. I generally have eggs with home fries, toast and a side of turkey sausage. Everything is always cooked perfectly, especially the eggs which I get over easy so the yolk is wonderfully runny (I like to spread it on the toast). They even add a small slice of orange which acts as a garnish and a sweet way to finish your meal. You would think a place that has been around since the 70's would be grungy and dirty but no, the owners have made it a point to keep the interior clean while updating the decor. Even the bathrooms got new sinks not too long ago (which honestly, they didn't really need but they look great). Cozy is an institution, and one that deserves to survive. This place is a gem. If you want a solid, some-frills, old school diner experience, this is it. NY has every niche food that you could possibly want--this is not that. But if you want a sandwich, a burger, an omelette, or a salad, come here. We got the patty melt with fries and a small Greek salad. The salad had oodles of feta and olives--it also had carrots which I didn't expect, but I enjoyed! We asked for no anchovies. The patty melt was the perfect mix of salty and greasy, without being too much of either of those things. My husband got a real cherry coke--so sweet and refreshing! Terrible unfriendly service by a waiter who couldn't remember even the simplest of requests. Prices are INSANE. As I was flipping through the menu I was actually laughing at the prices. I was bored one day so I went on a free food tour (the tour was free but the food wasn't) of my city and this was one of the stops. We didn't have a choice of what to order and the option was split pea soup. We had to pay the guide beforehand so he could call in the order and it was $3. It came out (we were outside) and it was a TINY shot glass of soup. Absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!!! If I'm gonna pay $3 I want more than a sip. The soup itself was ok. Nothing to scream about. The croutons were WAY better than the soup and there were only two of them cause like I said, it was a small shot glass of soup. I later looked at the actual menu and was appalled by what I saw. I love the owner, food and ambiance of Cozy, but the last 2 times I went there, the owner lit some kind of incense that is reminiscent of the ones they use in a church - Frankincense? This (used) to be a 24/7 joint that delivered time and time again (snow storms, hurricanes, heat waves, blackouts ... didn't matter) and hit so well after a night of dancing, drinking, schmoozing, whatever. And the food was consistent whether it was 10p or 330a. Turkey burgers -- amazing. With or without cheese. Don't need the fries, though if you're in the mood for them, ask for the steak fries. Bonus, they know delivery and poke holes in the top of the container so you don't wind up with soggy food. The soups!!! Matzoh ball is hands down the best in the city. Better than 2nd Ave deli, Sarge's, Essen, etc. trust me. So good. Piping hot and still flavorful. Consistently delicious. Broth is seasoned and the matzoh balls are fluffy, tasty and melt in your mouth (or spoon so don't be so rough with each bite). Absolutely AMAZING!! Everything was so good I will eat here every single chance I get. I ordered the chicken club with fries and it was to die for! My eyes literally rolled back when I took the first bite! My friend ordered soup that was absolutely to die for with HOME MADE croutons! Everything was so good! We also hide the olive leaf wraps with rice. I have never had those before and I'm not sure if I'm saying that right but they were so good! They drizzled olive oil, and put fresh oregano on top. Highlights are the Club sandwiches and the soup. They also serve excellent breakfast. You can sit at the counter and stay a little longer in a booth. They say they are open 24 hours..but call to make sure. They offer take out and may deliver, but I am not sure. Must check this place out. Right near Astor place and NYU. read more

I had basically a Greek omelette except that I ordered the tomato and onion separately and it was $27 which is of course absurd for a tiny diner omelette. How is it that I have never been here??? We stopped in for a late breakfast/early lunch the other day and all I can say is WOW! The food was freaking awesome! The hubs and I split a split pea soup (should have gotten my own it was that good!). I opted for a cheddar cheese burger and since I like lettuce on mine AND I like steak fries..I got the deluxe. The burger reminded me of the one my dearly departed Mom used to make (we called them "Grandma's Hamburgers" because my Grandma owned a burger shack in Utah when my Mom was a kid). The burger was prob the best I have had and let me tell ya, I have eaten them at some of the top steakhouses in the country (Peter Luger and Keens to name a few). We LOVE Diners and sadly, they are a dying breed. We were running around town and were pleasantly surprised when we came across Cozy Soup 'n' Burger. Hubby ordered a patty melt and I ordered a corned beef reuben sandwich. They were both delicious. John was awesome! We were seated below the painting of him behind the counter. We had the honor of chatting with him and learned that this was a family business that was started by his father half a century ago. It was a tough time for them to stay in business throughout the pandemic and thankfully, they were able to survive. It was pretty busy the day we stopped in. You can tell that he really loves what he's doing - so much so, that he even danced for us at the table! We look forward to visiting again the next time we're in town. I love Cozy Soup n' Burger. They were a go-to many (many) years ago when I was an undergrad at NYU and have maintained a steady course in the neighborhood as a local diner with late hours, pancakes and eggs at any time of day, daily regular customers, and a consistent staff. Pre-pandemic, when you were looking for a place to catch up with a friend, or take the kids out for a quick burger, they were always there. The pandemic has hit Cozy Soup n' Burger hard. Diner food is best eaten in a diner atmosphere, all along the Cozy experience was about far more than the food. Unfortunately, with indoor dining prohibited, Cozy does not appear to come to the top of mind when considering takeout. They do have a small outdoor dining space, where a friend and I sat down for a meal of steak (her) and chicken souvlaki (me). But the business coming in from these few outdoor tables cannot possibly be enough to sustain them. I write this review to urge New Yorkers to remember Cozy's when ordering for delivery. They are open practically all day and have an expansive menu. The grilled chicken souvlaki was GREAT!! This place means too much to too many people.
