They are usually making baos. You order from the desk with menu showing numbers. I always order #1 which is meat Bao with vegetables, they are large, not dried, tasty and a lot of ingredients stuffed correctly and nicely inside each large Bao. It's juicy, and meaty. #1 set box contains 6 baos and runs under $15, which is a great deal! The restaurant basically is very traditional food court style. Offers basics, so it's mostly to go or you eat at tables provided by HMart. By the way it's called Gook Hwa House. It's worth a trip if you visit HMart in Diamond bar. This review is just for their King Steamed Pork Dumpling ($13 for six pieces). These pork dumplings are so good! There is so much filling inside and the breading is just the right thickness! I don't know why these are called dumplings, they seem more like baos to me. Each order comes with their pickled radish and it is so good when you eat it together with the dumpling. I have yet to try other fillings, but I think the pork is my go-to. One dumpling is enough to fill me up and I think this is great to have on the go or for lunch. I prefer to steam it up at home, but microwave works as long as you put a moistened paper towel on it while heating. This place is a hidden gem! Ok so mixed bag here: Like a lot of people said, service is iffy. Cashier was impatient and huffy. Minus a star there. The menu I thought was confusing but I'm looking at the photos on Yelp and I didn't realize they had a second menu tucked in back behind the kitchen, I was looking at all the signage right in front. Also, based on the photo, the full menu is hard to see anyways, so they're just pushing their promo/ad items. Minus a star there. Minimum card charge of $15, but it's Rowland heights so I came prepared with cash. Inflation has also hit here: the daikon radish is no longer 50 cents but $1 to buy on the side. I bought two buns to test the water and they were $3 each. The Bao/dumpling: 5 stars all the way there, I liked the flavor, slight sweetness and leeks and all. It is very much a Korean taste; if you've had the dumplings at Kaju tofu or any other mandoo, that's the exact taste of the meat in the bun, but now you get a whole gang of it. The radish was nice crunch and tartness with that spice from the jalapeño, and was nice to cut through the sweetness of the meat and density of the bun. Admittedly the bottom of the bun was a little soggy but didn't detract from my enjoyment of the bun. Quality pork, chopped wood ear fungus, vermicelli, scallions, and spices are used for the fillings. When eaten together, the dough and filling complement each other and makes the meat bao a winning package that's hard to come by. Personally, I enjoy the pork that's used for the filling because it is high in quality: at other eateries the pork filling tend to have minced joints imbedded within or the filling tend to carry a musk and pungentness that's inherent in low-quality pork. From high schooler to a veteran high school teacher...wild times. What has me writing this review now was that I stopped by Diamond Bar last night and had some of these buns for dinner. I bought extra and saved some for lunch today. That used to be a staple when I lived closer, now I consider it a delicacy worth traveling out for. These buns ain't just fueled by nostalgia but also big flavor and quality price point. The buns have that nice fluffy texture and neither too wet or dry. Some parts of the buns might be damp from the juices from the filling, but I just use that as a guide on where to bite in to the bun first. Take it to go. Eat them, save em for the next day. Here are my thoughts: * Ambiance/Service (5/5): First of all, it's in a market, so it's definitely no place for a date night but that's also what makes it perfect for grabbing on the go or after some good ol' grocery shopping. They're busy because they know what they're doing and doing it well. We've had friendly and quick service each visit. It's a little confusing in that they look like two different storefronts (one for dumplings/savory items and one for desserts), but note that they are one and the same, owned by a Korean family. * Food (5/5 overall): As a Cantonese Chinese American, their Korean steamed baos are not the kind I grew up with, but I like that it's equally flavorful with probably way fewer calories--more veggies and vermicelli noodles mixed in with the meat to give it more varied texture and chew. The pork ones are my favorite and I feel like there's a nice bit of spice in it! Some other highlights on things we've tried: - Taiyaki (6/5): THISSS. GET THIS. I know it's called Cr8zy Bao, but my husband and I are crazy for their taiyaki. Hands down THE BEST taiyaki we've ever had, and we've tried a lot of different ones in OC and LA. Their taiyakis are way better than Somisomi and other Korean taiyaki places in crunch, mochi-chewy-goodness and filling amount/flavor. We've tried all their fillings and our personal favorites are custard and sweet potato (extra delicious and comforting on cold nights). If it's one thing you must try, it's their taiyaki!!! You will NOT regret it. We also like their mini taiyakis which are perfect for gifting in a box to in-laws and friends. They're almost too cute to eat. - Kimchi dumplings (5/5): Great amount of filling and the flavors combine really well. I usually dip all my dumplings in sauce, but these are really good all on their own that I skip the sauce. - Spicy Shrimp Dumplings (5/5): So, so good and my personal favorite of all their dumplings. They're the best when freshly steamed and eaten. They are bursting with umami flavor and perfect for those who like spicy seafood dishes like jjampong. - Red Bean (5/5): They really pack in the filling and it's one of their more popular baos for a reason. Perfect for those with a sweet tooth and for those who love red bean. They're especially good while they're still hot (or reheated) with a glass of milk or hot tea! I was walking through H Mart and the food strip in the plaza and couldn't decide what to eat. I found the pork buns super appetizing from their photos and had to try it. They were about $12 for 6 pieces, and I knew I could only eat half. Fortunately, someone noticed my dilemma and decided to split with me, and we both took 3. Overall, I think the pork fillings tasted great, with a good mixture of sweet and salty, reminded me of bulgogi while having thinly cut noodles that reminded me of japchae. Sans filling though, the bun was quite dry and bland other than the bottom which was soggy. I think that overall, the tastes and texture didn't go well together and was quite disappointed. To make matters worse, the minimum charge for card was $15, and with not many other enticing options that could be added to make the extra $3 difference, I reluctantly took the extra 50-cent charge. The cashier was also quite short with me and the kind stranger who split with me. It's just okay, definitely not as great as I remember. We used to come here all the time for the king veggie and king red bean dumplings, but now, the bun doesn't taste as soft and pillowy and the stuffing isn't as flavorful. The buns have a yellowish tinge, they used to be white. Service is okay and it's inside the H Mart so not much seating either. If you do go, I would recommend eating it right away. We ordered the Garlic Soy Chicken Wings to eat at the food court prior to shopping at H-mart. We liked the crispiness, and true to its name, the garlic and soy are definitely present. You can smell and taste the flavors on each bite. The chicken skin is crispy despite all the sauce all over it. And the inside of the wings and drumsticks are so juicy. I think I'll try the boneless chicken next time because it seems more convenient to eat. Don't be scared to get your hands dirty, though.
