    collard greens

CRAPPER BARREL! The WORST restaurant experience I've ever had. Restaurant was filthy, service was slow, and food tasted like it came out of a trash can. I'm not exaggerating. First of all I asked for green beans as my side with my chicken and dumplings, I received collard greens. Anyways, the chicken and dumplings were horrible, plain bread had more flavor than that monstrosity. The only flavor was from the pepper I had to add. Now on to the worst part of this prison meal... the collard greens. They didn't even taste edible. I can imagine if you took a bite of out a smokers couch it would taste the same, and that's being nice. Pancakes were gross.

Eggs were perfect ! The chef really did a great job on the food. Waitress was good also. Everyone was so nice and helpful. . I stopped Mike and asked him for butter . While he was carrying dishes.. He came back with a handful.

Wait time was about 25 minutes, which is not abnormal when we come to a Cracker Barrel restaurant. The temperature is very cold outside and pretty much inside. The first table we asked to be moved because of the draft coming through. I ordered fresh hot coffee, turnip greens, potato casserole, and the fried chicken. My sweetheart, ordered their new potato casserole shepherds pie. The fried chicken was hot however the breading is too thick to my liking. If you enjoy double fried very hard crispy chicken skin then this is for you. The turnip greens and potato casserole was lukewarm, but tasty. My sweetheart stated the shepherds pie was OK could've used more of the potato casserole versus the mashed potatoes as it was advertised. The pot roast was tender and quite tasty and it was served in the cute cast-iron skillet. Coffee was fresh and hot. However, the spoon that was given to me was not properly cleaned. The biscuits were fresh, plush and delicious. They actually melted in my mouth. Our waitress was very sweet and friendly. I will give her a four stars. The restrooms on the other hand were horrific. Smelly and trashy. I will be sure to let management know on our way out. Overall experience was three stars .

The parking lot was almost empty, which I mentioned but then thought maybe because it's 3pm. Although Golden Corral next door was packed. Google gave this place a 4.2 stars, I wish I had looked at yelp first because I definitely would not have eaten here. The food was awful breakfast casserole very greasy and I got the Shepards pie which I could not eat much of, and started having a stomach ache after eating some of it. Who puts tomatoes and sour cream on Shepards pie? But not just that it was not good at all.

The menu also has so many food options, making it easy to find something for everyone. The food overall was great and very enjoyable. However, I would not recommend the brownie and chocolate sundae dessert. The brownie and cookie were cold and hard, which made the dessert disappointing. On the positive side, the carrot cake was huge and definitely worth sharing -- easily enough for 3-4 people. The service was excellent as well. Our waiter was very attentive throughout the meal and made sure everything was taken care of. Overall, Second Street American delivers great food variety, strong service, and a family-friendly atmosphere, with just a few misses on dessert.

We have not not dined, or even spent much time at CW since the pandemic. After a hike behind Bassett Hall my wife and I enjoyed lunch. We arrived at noon and were promptly seated in an empty room. Around 20 minutes later the first floor was full. The atmosphere was cool and authentic. Nothing has changed since my previous visit. Our friendly waitress got menus and waters. I started off with an Apple Jack Old Fashioned utilizing Virginia Gentleman bourbon. We reviewed items on the menu that may have been served in the period. We started with apps. I got a salad, or "To Make a Fine Sallet". My wife crab croquettes. They pushed out first and we enjoyed. For mains. I got the pork shank, or "To Stew a Shoat in the French Way". My wife had "Chicken Hash", it was like a thick soup. The plating was beautiful and the taste matched. The old fashioned was disappointing because it was so weak. Service was decent, but not much attention. For dessert I got the bread pudding and wife chocolate tart. Both were outstanding! The bill was dropped on the table. It was around $150 w/ tip. Although pricey we had fun and felt like tourist just an hour from home. I would recommend.

We opted for the dessert and soup add-on. I ordered the peanut soup which was very creamy and rich. I enjoyed it very much. For a main, I ordered the pork shank which was very dense meat on a large bone served on top of what appeared to be polenta with pomegranate seeds. This was a very filling dish and I could not finish it. It didn't have a lot of flavor. I finished off with a pecan pie, which was delicious. During dinner, we were briefly serenaded by a performer, dressed in period garb. Although I wasn't rushed, it seemed that it was a very brief dinner with the food coming out very quickly. The tavern was what I expected to be with candlelight and decorations from an earlier century. There was just something missing with the vibe. My husband ordered the onion pie and the bread pudding.

While we can't promise *you* won't have a similar experience, we can say that in this case the executive chef personally responded promptly to a respectful polite email and then handled it all very appropriately once informed. And for that alone, we revise to 4 stars. Perhaps ours was an isolated incident. Regardless, a big thank you to the executive chef for the response and swift refund. Much appreciated. We *think* any executive chef would want to KNOW what was going on, perhaps in their absence, right? YMMV. Thanks again. ORIGINAL 1 star review: New Years Eve dinner at Terrace Room. The photo shows "pan-seared" scallops with a ... risotto-like substance. Heh. $50. Uh huh. Scallops: No sear. Super chewy. Hard to even cut. Risotto was like mushy oatmeal stuff and zero seasoning or flavor. Maybe something was wrong in the kitchen, I dunno. Ack. We both ordered this and left most of it. Also a bottle of wine (white) that had to be chilled in front of us for a while before the server could/would pour it. Hm. $110 for that. Note: the *service* was excellent! It is never a waiter's "fault" when the food is awful. We tipped the excellent waiter accordingly, BTW. Just sharing our experience at this place on this particular night. Hope it helps. Be aware. Maybe it's "iffy."
