I went with a big group after a party last month and there was a decent crowd gathered around Star Tacos after 9:00 on a Thursday night. The truck was on Western and I parked, probably at the risk of getting towed, at the gas station on the nearest corner. We ate tacos and hung out on the sidewalk for almost two hours. The truck is hard to miss if you're looking on the right block of Western. It's a loud truck with lots of lights and there's a whole sidewalk set-up with plastic tables and chairs, as well as a huge condiment table and an al pastor station. Service was fast and friendly. I ordered three tacos: al pastor, carne asada, and barbacoa. The carne and barbacoa were decent, but the al pastor was by far the best of the bunch, juicy and flavorful with sweet slivers of pineapple. I helped myself to lime wedges and the various avocado and chile salsas. I also enjoyed some carne asada fries, as someone ordered them and they came in an enormous, packed takeout carton. They were addictive and the carne tasted better with the fries than in the taco. I washed down my meal with a sweet, refreshing, and comically large pineapple agua fresca. If you're looking for a good taco truck in this part of town, definitely check out Star Tacos. Get a plateload of the al pastor. You will not regret it.

So when I heard Roadside Tacos had partnered with El Ruso, I immediately drove my fat ass from Alhambra to Studio City to see what all the hype was about. By now, every LA foodie knows the El Ruso origin story. Parking lot. Food truck. Brick-and-mortar. The American Dream, but with tortillas. I'd seen countless Instagram videos of meat smoking over hot coals, giant ribeye steaks getting slapped onto fresh tortillas, and influencers taking one bite before looking like they'd just seen God. I ordered the ribeye, chicken, al pastor, chile colorado, and carne asada tacos. While I waited, I realized one thing: if you sit anywhere near the grill, you're leaving smelling like you spent the afternoon tending a campfire. Not necessarily a bad thing, just know your clothes are coming home medium rare. There's also a DIY salsa bar with onions, cilantro, pineapple, multiple salsas, pickled vegetables, and more. It had a constant line of people making repeat trips. I thought, This must be incredible. You pick your tacos up right next to the grill, so I grabbed my tray and loaded up on toppings... but I kept them on the side. After all those Instagram videos of people eating the tacos completely plain, I wanted the authentic experience. And... I'm just not that brave. The ribeye taco is essentially a giant slab of steak sitting on a tortilla. Unfortunately, a good chunk of that slab was fat. Not marbling. Fat. Like, am I supposed to eat this? Maybe that's completely authentic, and maybe I'm exposing myself as an Irish guy who trims every steak before eating it, but I just couldn't get past it. Why not trim it beforehand and give me a taco that's 100% edible? The chile colorado ended up being my favorite. Tender stewed beef in a rich red sauce. Extremely messy, but delicious. The al pastor was fine. The carne asada was okay. The chicken... let's just say I wouldn't order it again. Here's my biggest issue, though. Everything was surprisingly... flavorless. Even the salsas lacked punch. It honestly felt like everyone at the salsa bar was desperately searching for the flavor that never quite showed up. I thought maybe I was losing my mind, so I asked three different groups eating nearby what they thought. Every one of them said some version of, "Yeah... it's kind of bland." Maybe it was just an off night. Restaurants have those. The space itself is great. It's open, lively, has plenty of TVs for sports, and I genuinely love the El Ruso success story. I wanted to love this place. Unfortunately, the food just didn't live up to the hype for me. One other thing worth mentioning: I didn't see a tipping option because there's an automatic 15% service charge added to every bill. I personally don't mind that at all, but it's worth knowing since this isn't exactly a cheap meal. Five tacos and a soda came out to about $52. Will I go back? Probably. One disappointing meal isn't enough for me to completely write a place off, especially one with this much buzz. I'm hoping I simply caught them on an off night because I'd genuinely love to change my mind.
