Man, we were excited to come here for my son's graduation dinner. We last came here for his 16th birthday and it was amazing. WHAT HAPPENED? This isn't the place we fell in love with. The dining room is freezing. The tortillas are random and although it fits the Tex Mex theme, it was not what we expected or wanted. The appetizers were mediocre. The steaks were NOT the highest quality. I cook steaks and these were Waffle House meats and certainly not "Prime" quality. I think there was one bartender working. First round of drinks came when dinner got there. The second round came when we were all done with the food. The dessert options were cheesecake and key lime pie. Again, disappointing. The worst part is that our bill was over $600 before the tip. That is crazy. The only thing that was working well for them are the hostess and servers. We went on a Tuesday night for our anniversary dinner. It was our first time being there. The parking lot is a little hard to find and navigate but once you find it you're good. I was worried at first that it would be really loud because of the outside music but when you get inside it isn't loud at all. The atmosphere is really nice, food was awesome, my husband ate everything on his plate. The serving portion was pretty good too, not skimping at all. Our server was Angie, she was very nice and attentive. All of the people there were awesome. It's a little pricey but good food and good service are well worth it. Word to the wise, this is NOT the Culpepper's of past. If you haven't been since the new owners took over beware, this is no longer an exclusive steakhouse. My daughter had heard it was back open under new ownership so we decided to give it a try with hopes of what it used to be. What we got, the good, the bad and the ugly. The good: cocktails were on point, service was great and oddly, good tortillas. The bad: appetizers were mostly good (the firecracker shrimp was oddly good but didn't really fit the Tex Mex/steakhouse menu) and were very overpriced for the portion sizes, the steaks are no longer good quality steaks and are more comparable to what you'd get at places like Applebee's or Luby's, the temperature of the dining room was FREEZING , the Mexican food they now serve is nothing to brag about. The ugly: they have replaced the wonderful bread they used to serve, with tortillas, the perfectly prepared calamari is a thing of the past, the queso is Campbell Soup quality, the shrimp tacos were nothing to write home about AND lastly, this is not a $525 worthy restaurant (our bill plus tip). For that price, a trip to Nick and Sam's or Bob's chop house would have been way more satisfying. Save your money and make the trip else where. read more

AMAZING!!!!! I make it a habit to try different steak houses, this is by far my new favorite. They rolled out a new menu tonight and it absolutely was a success. Everything was cook perfectly. The salad was even full of flavor, each garnish had a flavor and they all complimented each other so well. The steak was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, especially with the Oscar crab! The Mac & cheese actually had lobster flavor and was so creamy and rich! The mushrooms was huge and so flavorful. Blown away by the flavors! We had a rocky start... being sat in the center was not an option for me and asked to sit in the booth across from the table being sat at. I got a look that was piercing from the hostess and then I said please... she accommodated us. Brittany was our server! She is such an amazing person and server. This was my third time eating here in the last 6 months. The first time was incredible, hence the next two visits. At our first visit, our party of 10 had a great experience, enjoyed the food, & the service was timely, kind, helpful. We had a couple of different appetizers, including the onion shoestrings, which were complimentary for our first visit. Everyone at the table ordered something different, & everyone enjoyed it. Our second visit was with my family from out of town. I raved about our experience & they wanted to try it for themselves. This experience was the opposite of our first. While the food was good & the server was kind, she was never nearby & 2 of my party of 5 didn't get their food until everyone else was finished. A manager discounted some of the food, although that wasn't the goal. We just really wanted him to know that perhaps some of the staff needed a little extra training. Our third visit was a party of 8 for Father's Day. We were sat outside where it was incredibly hot & the sun beamed on us the entire meal. Our server was very sweet, but also a little hard to find when we needed her. We never did get the tortillas & butter we were supposed to get before the meal, although it was mentioned many times. One person ordered the special & received his food long before the rest of us. He finished before anyone else got salads. We ordered a queso appetizer, & when it finally came out about 20 minutes later, they didn't bring us any chips. That took another 5 minutes. I want to reiterate that the server was very kind. I just think she may have needed a little extra help! Fast forward to when we get our salads, the meals came out almost immediately afterwards. That wouldn't be that big of a deal, but 3 out of 6 meals (the 7th has already been eaten) were very cold. The food had to have been ready for quite some time & just never brought to us. I'm writing a review because this wasn't something that I wanted a discount for, or something that I wanted to make a big stink about. I do think that there are some very big kinks in the service department that need to be worked out. I hope this improves, because the food really is good. read more

We ordered Togo deserts : as instructed they said give 15 minutes to pickup then call when outside . I did as instructed them waited 20 minutes after arriving. When I got home I opened the dishes. They look like something thrown in a bowl . Terrible. We called manager and he said he would make it right the next time we go there. How does he know we will ever go back? We celebrated our 10th anniversary last night. We were greeted with free vallet and enjoyed a cocktail at the bar. One of the employees offered to work with the hostess to get us a table. (We had originally planned on happy hour and having dinner at home.) The martini was priced right, and it came with fresh blue cheese stuffed olives. They also served freshly made warm tortillas with butter. Our steaks were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. We finished up sharing a Crem Brule for dessert. The whole experience was incredible. Culpepper's used to be our family go-to back in the 90's and early 2000's but as the food got more expensive and lower quality, we quit going. I was thrilled that it had changed ownership and heard rumors that maybe they were really coming into their own again but we were disappointed in the food and the prices. The service and ambiance were great however. The starter tortillas with butter were a bit ridiculous instead of their former dinner rolls...only one of us got a steak, the 8 oz sirloin, which she said was so tough, she could hardly chew. I got the coconut shrimp, which was ok, others got the salmon and the chicken fried steak, again only ok. The salads were right out of a Kroger bag, but at least the entrees came with a side and salad to help justify the price. It was wonderfully nostalgic, but not someplace I'd go back to very often. read more

We were celebrating a significant anniversary with another couple who suggested Culpepper Cattle. After a conversation with the waitperson about the steak quality, we followed his suggestion and both couples ordered the Prime Ribeye. WHAT a DISAPPOINTMENT!! I had cooked a nice Prime Tenderloin at home with meat from a supermarket just a few days before and have had Prime beef often. To paraphrase texas legend Lloyd Benson, I know prime beef; Prime beef is a friend of mine, but sir, this was NOT Prime beef. Our steaks were full of gristle and looked liked they had been " tenderized" with a mallet given it an odd appearance. So, I failed to mention the nice atmosphere and nice music, all top notch. If they let me come back and bring my own meat, I might try it again. We mentioned it twice to the waiter who said he would tell the manager. As we were walking out she asked " how was everything?" I her told basically that their Prime steak would not match an average choice steak. ( BTW, I would have preferred a hamburger steak, at least I could chew it without spitting out the gristle.) I have tried Culpeppers twice since the reopening and have been disappointed both times. Ordered fried shrimp and house salad. The salad came out first and then the shrimp second. The shrimp were in just a bowl, no sauce, no garnish, just a bowl of shrimp. Asked if they had sauce and was told no tartar sauce or cocktail sauce but they had steak sauce......so just a bowl of fried shrimp for $19. read more

The new ownership has really turned around Culpeppers. It's such a unique venue, but the food at the original incarnation was not good. Since the new ownership took over we've been to Culpeppers 3 times. Each time our cocktails were terrific, the steaks were perfectly medium rare just like we like them and the service was above and beyond. On the weekends there's usually a band playing as well, which I enjoy. You should definitely check it out! read more

Arrived around 7pm on a Sunday here's my take: Structure- the building is very large and is going for the "log cabin lodge look" lots of wood, dead animals on the walls etc. There are "sections" of the restaurant with each one having its own small bar or saloon which was pretty cool. However, the place smells terribly musty and sort of like moth balls We were sat immediately in the corner of one of the sections directly across from a large party with screaming children. I made the comment loudly to my husband for the hostess to hear - "oh look you're favorite, screaming children" to which the hostess responded "yeah, we weren't anticipating them" but still sat us near them. (They screamed & ran around the entire time) so incredibly annoying, especially when you're paying an exorbitant amount of money there. PS.. there were maybe 20 guests in the entire place. Pretty empty Service - we ordered cocktails and our server went to a different bar to collect them verses the one 4 feet away. Regardless, they were delicious and absolutely needed to deal with those screaming children. However we had empty glasses wayyyy to long with our server no where in sight. Our server didn't deliver our appetizer or entrees. Different person each time. It was as though we were an after thought. Once our server finally came back I ordered a double Bombay Sapphire and tonic which arrived after I was finished my entree Food - bread with a delicious rich, whipped butter is complimentary. Appetizer- we ordered a shrimp cocktail which was the best part of the meal. 5 Huge prawns, incredibly fresh, spicy but not too spicy cocktail sauce. Thoughtful presentation! Entrees- I ordered the 7 ounce filet for $45 and added Oscar style for an additional $23 which included asparagus, crab meat & bearnaise sauce with mashed potatoes as a side. Meh- not nearly enough crab, bearnaise sauce was the best part Husband ordered the "chefs special of trio of New York's for $49" which included 3 small New York's strips prepared 3 different ways with 4 different sauces on the side. Steaks were nothing special however the sauces were decent. Beautiful presentation I have to say.. the plate of food was gorgeous with the different color of sauces being the highlight. Price/value - WAYYYY overpriced. For the amount you spend here you certainly deserve more. At the VERY least deserve top notch service. Theirs is mediocre at best. Side note: we had to have the hostess track down our server to pay Overall - HARD PASS truthfully I would of rather saved $240 and gone to McDonald's read more

I think they did a great job with the remodel and new menu. This place is a staple in Rockwall and they did a fantastic job with keeping the same rustic/cabin feel with a little facelift (it feels more open, lighter inside, new spaces to sit and eat etc). Food was good but what I really want to mention is the service. From the greeting from 3 hostesses, the manager stopping by to see how everything was and the star of the show....our waiter, Brent. He was absolutely amazing and made our visit perfection!!! Service has gone down so much lately....it was obvious they are striving to create a better experience for their customers. Great job!!! I was here for a large family gathering, maybe 100 people. The restaurant did a terrible job of coordinating the meal. By that, I mean they put out chafing dishes of food and then walked away. Worse still, even though we paid for more people than showed up, they ran out of food before all the guests were served. The food we did get was ok to good, with the beef being the best. Maybe this is an OK place if you're going for a meal, and that's not something I ever expect to experience. However, you may want to look elsewhere if you're hosting a significant event. read more

Decided to try them after their reopening, started with a Caesar salad and it was hot! I mean spicy hot. Why? Ordered a filet 10 oz medium rare, it came closer to raw to rare, could not eat it. My friend ordered shrimp tacos, the brought him grilled shrimp, not what he ordered. The used to be famous for their fried lobster, the old version was better than the newer version.
