Lounge chairs are cool. Jalepenos on the side were mild but the salsa was hot. ?!! Great tasting ground beef, and effort in presentation.

I was homesick for Mom's pozole yesterday so on the way to the office I decided to make a detour near Cuquita's. Only my second trip here since the original location on Henderson was bought out by corporate whoremongers, and I had not ordered pozole here. Got it to go and opened it at the office. The pozole was in a decent size giant styrofoam cup and steaming hot. Also came with 3 tortillas (flour or corn) and a small container of shredded cabbage, diced onion, and a lime wedge. But what struck me was the neon orange color of the broth. I don't ever recall seeing it in my order from the original location. Just taking off the foil and lid from the cup and I had orange oil all over my hands and fingers. It was like Cheetos - wouldn't wipe off with a napkin - had to soap up at the sink. The broth also wasn't as spicy as I remembered, just a little tart as if they had already squeezed lime before it was served. One of the best in Dallas. Do not go expecting El Fenix cookie cutter type Mexican fare. And not that there is anything wrong with that but this is different. The star dish here is the pozole soup. It is absolutely amazing. Texas Monthly is correct in saying it is one of the best dishes in Texas. Slow braised pork shoulder in a wonderful pepper broth along with hominy. It is pure goodness. Wonderful tortillas and I love the salsas and chips. The beans are wonderful and full of pork flavor and the rice is moist and cooked with broth. I love reading the reviews of people who have no idea of what they are talking about regarding Mexican food. If you think all Mexican food is supposed to taste like Mi Cocina, you might not love Cuquita's. read more

Really good, quality Mexican food. This place is pretty authentic. I went for the first time, and was very pleased with the authenticity of the food. The pozole and gorditas were amazing. I highly recommend both dishes. Their tortillas are home made. Only reason they don't get 5 stars was their chips, you can tell are store bought, and their salsas were just okay. Cuquita's is what Mexican food is all about. It's a Mex-leaning version of Tex-Mex (example: you can get an enchilada plate, but not with brown chili; you can choose red or green sauce instead). I have never had anything on the menu that was not fresh and delicious. The food is served in generous portions by efficient, unobtrusive servers in a homey, family-friendly, thoroughly unpretentious setting. Prices are more than reasonable. Do not miss the hot, fresh corn tortillas with butter and house-made salsas, served as a free appetizer with dinner. Our favorite entrees: tacos al carbon, flautas, enchiladas, posole. I've seen some Yelper complaints that the food is bland. These are evidently amateurs with no understanding of what to do with that terrific homemade salsa. Use it! Oh, and they serve a delicious Mexican breakfast, too. This is the whole package. read more

I absolutely love this place. When you are seated at your table, they provide you with chips and two different hot sauces with handmade tortillas and butter. Staff is always very friendly and your food is brought to you promptly. The margaritas are amazing.The atmosphere is very pleasant and their prices are reasonable. I always put this restaurant on my list of to-do's in Dallas every time I go visit my family there. First, it always starts out with a flour tortilla with butter, and that is always yummy! Then it is the variety of things that they have on their menu. They prepare their items fresh, and that's including their flour tortillas that they prepare there. I am aware that they have a couple more of these in the Metroplex, but this one has a great ambiance and their restaurant is well decorated. On the weekends, it is a long wait, but sure it is well worth it. Their service is great and overall quality is great. I would say that it is one of the Mexican restaurants that have been the best for me outside the US obviously. California has a lot of joints, but I know that Texas does not have as many as in California, which makes it a bit unique. I know that Cuquita's is well worth it!! My husband and I ate here for dinner yesterday. It is always so busy that we had hope. Unfortunately we discovered that it appeared so busy because there is no table turnover due to the amount of time it takes to place your order and actually get your food. We waited almost 1 hour between placing our order and getting our food. The quality of the meat was very poor. My husband looked like he was trying to saw wood with a butter knife. I had the tacos carbon and could not bite through some of the pieces of beef. We got no butter with our tortillas which were served halfway through the meal. Some tables were getting 2 types of salsa we initially got 1 and close to the end of the meal when she refilled it our waitress brought the other. We were extremely disappointed. read more

I go here about once a week as I live close by. Since discovering this location last year, I have been here tens of times. It is really a hit or miss on the food. I have gotten some items that I loved and some I don't care too much for. The food is simple and cheap. I enjoy the Langua Tacos and enchiladas are great too. Disappointing. We went on a Friday around 3:30- there were a fair number of customers. The salsa was so watered down it tasted like tomato juice mixed with water- no spice or flavor. Chips were stale. I ordered three chicken enchiladas with green sauce- I received it with red enchilada sauce. The food was barely warm. The refried beans and rice were flavorless. The enchiladas were average- nothing special. Our waitress disappeared and we finally had to ask another server for the check. Definitely will not return. read more

Only came here on Sunday night because every other Mexican joint was closed, and what a disappointment. Their menu is very limited, not even tortas are on it. My meat dish was swimming in some soup, as well as was my shredded lettuce on the side, while it was supposed to be some salsa sauce, and had so much fat on it. The chicken fajitas were so generic, you get better at taco cabana. They consisted of small random pieces of chicken (breast) with very minimal shreds of bell pepper and onion and not anything close to long strips like one would expect. They looked and tasted pan fried, nothing authentic, I can make better myself, and they won't be so bland. To top this off, customer service was far from standard, but I don't usually complain about that, as I'm more than willing to put up with bad service for good food. None of this existed here. Will never come back again. Come on, manager, tell your chef this is not how you cook Mexican fajitas! I was surprised to see parking lot full of cars and they are pretty packed. Very disappointed. My friend and I were anxious to try Cuquita's after reading about it in Texas Monthly. What a huge mistake. My relleno was tough and the breading was like eating fried dough - gross! I wanted salsa verde on top but got some kind of bright green bland sauce. The rice & beans were okay and the tortilla they give you before the meal was good. Chips were stale and the hot sauce (what little of it there was) was not hot enough - no kick at all. My friend wasn't happy with her enchiladas either. Overall, wasted our money & our lunch hour. Will definitely NOT be going back. read more

This place is fucking awesome. I think these are some of my favorite enchiladas, the chicken enchiladas with verde sauce. It's a huge plate, with a couple of appetizer tortillas, two different salsas and some chips and it's about 10 bucks after tip. They give chips and salsa at the beginning of your visit and they are stale and the salsa is very very watery. The food wasn't exactly flavorful and the waitress seemed unusually sad. About halfway into the meal a friend showed up to greet us. Yes, a cockroach came out of the wall and watched us eat. Unfortunately for him we decided we didn't want anymore. I've been to Cuquita's many times since I moved into the area. It started off as a really great place with decent food. The past few times however, it has really gone downhill. My most recent visit, I ordered chicken fajitas. They were out to me very quickly but looked as if they were re-served from another persons meal or had sat in the kitchen for a while. The chicken was cold and hard with a waxy texture to it, and the vegetables were barely cooked, hardly what you expect from a sizzling fajita dish. The wait staff there is always subpar and barely pays attention to what you need. I went an entire meal without a drink refill or so much as a stop by of our waitress. When I told her she could take my meal, that barely a few bites were taken out of, she didn't say a thing. I hate to say anything when this happens but I told her about the issues and all she offered was to make me another meal. I had already been there for 30 minutes, I wasn't going to wait for another meal since now my appetite had been ruined. My wife's meal was ok and she ate most of it. I would have turned down a refund but I would have at least liked to see it offered. I just don't feel like they care when you are eating there. read more
