I've had Coco Ichibanya so many times in Japan and I'm so happy that we have it here in San Diego. The service is great because all the workers are quick to greet, help, and also refilling waters as well without us asking. 5/5 service Went on a Sunday night and the parking lot was full. The server said it would be a 25 minute wait. You have to scan the QR code on the wall to get on the waiting list. The tablet at the front is for take out orders only. Even though we were told 25 minutes we only waited 15 minutes then was called to get seated. Plenty of seats, you're not sitting close to other parties, plenty of walking space and good lighting. I got the Chicken Cutlet Curry with cheese level 4 and normal rice. Chicken was really good and the curry with cheese is a game changer it's a must. The spice level is a nice kick and not spicy to the point you're sweating. 5/5 Please try the Fukujinzuke. It's a must with the curry 5/5 Chicken cutlet Curry udon was also very delicious. Service 5/5 -Staff was friendly and told us to scan the QR code to get on the waitlist, there were about 8 parties in front of us. The broth was a blend of curry and soup, udon carried the broth nicely and the chicken cutlet soaked in the curry but remained crispy. Especially if you add a pinch of the pickled radish they provide, the hot soft and cold crunchy combo is so good. I've only ordered takeout/delivery from this location since it is always a large line when busy. And parking is very scarce in this lot, for all of the businesses that are located here. Generally I've received their amazing compartmeted takeout containers with their delicious goods. A couple of times over the years I seemed to get some backup supplies for packaging, probably because there was a non-stop flow of curry leaving the place. But the flavor is unmatched. I had been craving the delicious Curry House since I moved back to SD from O'ahu over a decade ago. There were several Curry House locations available to fill the void at any meal, and multiple competitors that offered similar fare. Then around covid this gem popped up. I haven't found any business, anywhere, that can nail the Curry House style meal as consistently as they can for decades now. Somewhat limited but offers some of the basics that any foodie would appreciate. I enjoyed the Vegetable Curry on baseballs opening weekend '26. Great flavor and a little bit of heat. I came here for dinner with my daughter tonight and absolutely loved it here! The food was amazing and service was really great. We arrived at 6pm and scored a parking space directly in front of the restaurant and we beat the long line. By the time we left, the line was wrapped around the front of the restaurant. As soon was we stepped inside the restaurant, we could smell the delicious curry aroma. We knew right away that we would be in for quite a treat! We ordered the chicken cutlet with omelette added and the nan keenan curry (upgraded to garlic naan). What's interesting about this restaurant is you have to pay extra if you want your curry spicy. The spicier you make it, the more you pay. Mild and regular are free. If you update to a spice level of 1, you pay 20 cents; level 2 is 40 cents; level 3 is 60 cents; level 4 is 80 cents; and level 5 or above is $1. We ordered a level 4 on the keema curry and a 5 on the chicken cutlet. Both levels were good and there wasn't too much of a difference. Both dishes were absolutely yummy and the serving size was huge. We didn't finish our food, so we'll have some nice leftovers for tomorrow. I still don't understand why we keep coming here, but every once in a while, my husband gets a craving so we pit stop when in the area. I still say that the Irvine location is better than the San Diego location. We were not greeted with the typical "いらっしゃいませ" greeting, but we were seated fairly quick as we had just beat the dinner rush. I noticed prices were significantly raised, but that 100% did not match the quality, service or food portions we received. They give less food (even rice) and the kids meal was a joke with a few soggy fries and overcooked nuggets and corn dogs. We weren't checked on once during the meal, waited forever to get containers and the bill because we finally had to press the button for service as we were being passed by and ignored for basically the whole duration of our visit. We took my mom here for Japanese curry because she is afraid of hot spice. The Japanese curry here is delicious and savory and not spicy unless you add spice to your order, which is an option. Both the rice and udon dishes were so yummy. It is the same curry. But you get to choose your base, protein, vegetables, and can add omelette and spice level. One of my favorite curry restaurants is Coco Ichibanya. The curry is delicious and you can customize any dish that they have. We enjoyed the fries and love dipping the naan in the curry sauce. They also have delicious pickles on the table to add in. They have a hint of sweetness to them. The only issue here is trying to park. First time we tried coco was in Japan so we were excited to try this location close to home. It was busy on a Saturday afternoon but you are able to get on a waitlist with your phone number. The curry itself was okay. The flavor is pretty spot on to the Japan location but the consistency was more watery. There's no way I can review this without comparing it to CoCo Ichibanya in Japan. And, ooohh boy, where do I begin? The fried "teriyaki chicken" is horrendous. Not super surprising, as the item doesn't exist in Japan. Which is....also not surprising since teriyaki chicken is about as Japanese as orange chicken is Chinese at this point, which is to say....not at all. The closest approximation on the Japanese menu might be the side item simply called "coco de chicken," which is the opposite of this abomination in every way. Coco de chicken is soft, juicy, tasty and has no sauce at all. Even the breading is soft with a slight crisp, but without being soggy. This "teriyaki chicken" is dry sawdust over-processed "all white meat" drowning in sauce and tastes like cat vomit. After that, I ordered chicken cutlet with vegetables like I usually do. The chicken katsu here is also not as good as the ones in the Japanese locations, even though it should theoretically be the same. The ones in Japan are thinner, but longer, and more tender. These are thicker, but shorter and chewy. Having said that, I think these cutlets are still pretty decent and certainly not in the same category as the "teriyaki chicken." Well okay, there was also one piece of cutlet at the end that was way overcooked and dry, so that's another strike. It's not all bad though. The curry, for one, tastes almost the same, and I assume it's the same basic mix out of the same boxes. Perhaps some chili or sauce they're using to make it spicy is different. Of course, the spice levels are dramatically lowered for wussy American palates, and that's already considering Japanese spice levels are not as insane as, say, Thai or Indonesian or Sichuan. I ordered the spice level 10 here. I would say it's equivalent to about a spice level 4-5 in Japan. In Japan, I've been ordering spice level 6 recently, so slightly more spicy than the level 10 here. Even that adjustment seems to be insufficient for some, as I already saw another Yelp review complaining that the spice levels 2 and 3 were way too spicy and ruined their meal. Lmao. The veggies and rice are very slightly different. The rice was perhaps slightly less absorbent, but I thought it was still good. Similarly, I can't taste much difference in the veggies. I like this counter since it feels like Japanese CoCo. It just faces a wall, which is probably off-putting to a lot of Americans, but is way more common in Japan. I also like the little square container of pickles, which looks identical to the ones in Japan, and I happily put some on my curry. Finally, this is significantly more expensive than in Japan. That's partly due to recent inflation and partly due to California. Ultimately, I complained about a lot of things, but aside from the "teriyaki chicken," I still kind of liked it. read more

I enjoyed the Curry Chicken Cutlet at their new Petco Park counter near Section 100-106. A lil spicy, but not unbearable. Large chunks of potatoes and carrots (you gotta ask for the katsu with veggies). Reminded me of my mom's curry beef stew that she and my dad sold on their Pua Mana luncheon back in the late 60s/early 70s along O'ahu's North Shore. I came here twice in 1 week, I was surprised by how much I craved it after the first time! The first time I got the pork cutlet + squid + green salad at level 4 spice. It was definitely spicier than I expected given that the scale goes up so high and it's a Japanese chain, but not totally unbearable. I think if you can comfortably eat a Shin ramen this will be doable for you. The flavors were really good and even though the pork cutlet is not really seasoned, the combination of flavor and texture with the curry is really tasty. I also was surprised by how tasty the squid was with the curry. Also for just $2 the green salad is a nice, healthy little app! Overall I think it's still on the pricey side, but I leave feeling full. The second time i got pork cutlet + croquettes + green salad at level 3 spice. This was a much more comfortable/easy spice level and will probably be my default. I enjoyed the combination of the crunchy croquettes and cutlet with the curry sauce. Highly recommend grabbing some pickles on the table as they provide some good sweetness, acidity, and crunch to an otherwise savory and dense dish. As other reviews have said, this place gets packed easily. The first time I went around 5pm on a Tuesday and it was pretty full, and the second time I went around 11:30am on Saturday and it was full with a line barely 15 minutes later. Plan accordingly! Writing a review for this place is somewhat difficult for me. The reason why is because I think there's nothing special about this place or the curry here. Additionally, I think it's kind of expensive. However, I don't know of any other curry place in San Diego that will make a spicy omelette curry with sausage and spinach. This place specializes in Japanese katsu curries. However, I just don't like katsu that much. I do enjoy the sausage and spinach curry. But you only get 3 tiny sausages so I always add in the omelette for more protein. On top of that I love spicy so I always do a spicy level 8-9. And guess what? They charge by spicy level, so the spicier you get, the more you get charged. A spicy level 8 sausage, spinach, and omelette curry is about $20 before tax and tip! But like I said, I don't know any other curry place in San Diego that will make this meal. So I'm stuck coming here even though the curry is not amazing and the price is high. Other notable things, the restaurant is middle in size. The restaurant's ambiance is busy most of the time I come here. If you come alone, you may be quickly seated at the bar. The parking sucks most of the time because it's Convoy and there's like 5 other restaurants in this plaza. If another restaurant in San Diego can make an omelette curry with sausage and spinach for a better price or taste, I would lower this to 3 stars. read more
