The waitstaff Great you right at the door. Today there was a woman who Accidentally drop her drink. the wait staff had no problem showing this person compassion, Giving them a new drink, and even assisting the woman to the car with her drink. I tried one of the quiches( cheese and broccoli). They cook it up for me and it was very tasty. The crust was actually still crunchy. My favorite was actually a smoothie. When my husband and I came up here for a military weekend seminar back in January, we knew we had to find a great coffee shop that serves both outstanding coffee as well as chai tea. This is it! My husband prefers hot chai tea lattes, so he opts for the powder over liquid--which they have and he loves it! The coffee is also pretty amazing! I love the iced Zombie Killer--which is cold brew with caramel, vanilla, and your choice of milk (I went with almond milk. Perfection!). We love that it is veteran owned, they roast their own beans (they even have special Veteran Coffee Roasters blends you can purchase with a portion being donated back to wounded and disabled vets), they use powder for their chai teas, and they have delicious GF options (this is especially amazing since I cannot eat gluten)! This will be our go to when we're back in town! read more

Veteran owned local coffee shop that roasts its own coffee and offers a 10% military discount daily and a 50% off discount for military on Mondays. I lived near Seattle and love a good Americano. Typically, most places char the beans and use automatics which ruin the flavor. I end up having to add sugar or cream to cut the burnt bitterness. Here, I ordered an Americano and for the first time I left Japan and Washington, I really enjoyed my Americano without anything added. I also had the quiche which was a great choice. Sometimes quiche can be hard like a brick or way to soft like over easy eggs. This was the ideal soft cheese top, tender bacon and egg mix on top of what tasted like a home made crust. Since its a Saturday morning, I think I might go back for a cup, I really enjoyed this place and it seems like it is hugely popular based on the large crowd on a Friday at 10am. read more

I have never written a review but their coffee is so delicious, I just had to leave a review. Came to Newport on a weekend trip. This place had great reviews so decided to check it out. We got the zombie killer and dirty espresso chai. Both are absolutely amazing. The dirty chai is the best I've ever had. Couldn't have enough of it. The staff was super nice and helpful. I was told about this gem by a co-worker, so I decided to give it a shot. Yes, I was your typical Starbucks person until I came here. The girls at the counter were extremely pleasant and offered suggestions since it was my first time there. They also have a great variety of baked goods, lunch items and breakfast sandwiches! This is a nice little spot not too far from my office and while I'm not the biggest coffee drinker, this place does make a very good chai latte (I have enjoyed both the regular and iced versions). I tend to favor the vanilla flavored one but the spiced one is also quite tasty. I've noticed on my stops in that they have a pretty decent selection of pastries and breakfast foods but haven't had a chance to try any of them yet. Depending what time you swing by this place can get pretty busy in the morning. It's definitely the type of place locals seem to frequent for their daily cup of coffee, so be prepared for a little wait. The people working behind the counter are usually pretty friendly but at times can seem a little overwhelmed if there is a big morning rush. Overall, if you are in need of a cup of fresh coffee or a delicious chai and find yourself in the Middletown area, then give Custom House a try. read more

This place knows how to brew their coffee. No acidity or over powering after taste in their coffee. They sell +15 types of coffee beans here also. The staff is amazingly nice and walked my buddy of mine through the ingredient list and they even knew WHERE their coffee beans come from (which is a rarity). Adorable coffee shop with tons of seating. They have rice AND almond milk for non-dairy alternatives, which is great since I try to avoid nuts as well. I was able to sub in almond milk which was great and it was the perfect balance of a frozen treat and coffee. It was not too sweet which is what I look for in these frozen drinks because I love the taste of coffee just prefer it frozen. Used to love this place but they stopped making their best drink, the frozen cappuccino, for no clear reason and not too nice about it. So will no longer be going. Particularly odd since it is an employee-based company and it is the middle of summer. Oh well! Thanks Jessica!! Good to know. We actually have called and came in, and were told that you no longer made frozen drinks, but we were offered no explanation as to why when we asked. Really nice coffee house that was just a couple blocks from our Air B&B. We discovered that Middletown requires a car because 2 blocks = a highway and a shopping plaza, but we had fun waiting out the rain in CHC, then hiking back to our cave when it slowed down. The coffee was quite good, full of flavor. Very friendly, too. Locals obviously know each other here and it was nice to sit on the porch pooch-watching while folks with dogs came in and out. read more

This is my coffee spot more than once a week, I'm addicted! The staff are so nice greeting with a smile no matter what time a day or how busy they are. The best part you ask? Proceeds go to Wounded Warrior Foundation plus they always give discounts to all branches of military (active, retired, reserves, and spouses). One time my daughter was allowed to help bag and seal our own coffee to bring home. Being preschool age, that is fun and a big deal. The best drink in my opinion no less is the naughty chai spiced with almond milk hot or iced. We have brought some other ground coffee beans home, that stuff is not like the fake grocery market canned goods. Overall, support a local veteran own and run business rather than a chain coffee shop. read more

First time here and I've lived right down the street for the past year. I needed a place to study so I yelped local coffee houses and this popped up. Parking was plentiful, the staff is very friendly, and since I've been cutting down on coffee I ordered a Tropical Green Iced Tea which is phenomenal. I added my own honey which I prefer because some places don't put enough. I also grabbed a cranberry-nut cake which they placed on a plate for me and was very moist and delish! I sat all the way towards the windows in the back to study and the atmosphere was just awesome. Definitely coming back! I think I just found my new cozy cafe to study in. :) read more

I stopped in and it was clean, friendly and the coffee was great. I got an iced medium roast black coffee and it was very smooth and definitely not watered down. Eeekkk! I think I just found my new favorite place! Custom House Coffee is such a warm, friendly atmosphere. On top of that, they have great employees (my husband and I met Lynn, Gail, Adelia, and Bob who were incredibly nice). On top of that, they are right down the street from my house. On top of THAT....they have amazing coffee! I ordered a small Almond Joy Latte with skim. Pipping hot, just like I like it. Good strength brew; not weak and watery like other places. Perfect amount of sweetness; not overloaded with sugar. Plus, a cute little design in the foam on top! These guys have it down to a science. And I would go back again and again. Coffee is good. Customer service is lacking. I was here in Rhode Island last year at this time and experienced employees talking rudely about other employees who were not present at the time. Employees do not smile and are not friendly or accommodating. I came back to Custom House this past weekend exactly one year later and brought visitors and experienced the exact same thing. Employees running the front line gossiping and talking rudely about other employees whom were not present. Also treated very rudely when asking for straws for our drinks. Clearly, clearly straws were visible behind this employee and she stated, "sorry we don't have any straws. If you need one you have to buy a reusable one." What coffee shop does not have straws in this time of covid. I'm not wanting to put my mouth on a lid cover after someone's dirty hands have touched it while placing it on my cup. Really? So, I'm thinking I need to find a different coffee shop as nothing much has changed since I visited a year ago. read more
