I went here on a rainy day. I came here for a coffee and breakfast sandwich. This place is so quaint and cozy. There is comfortable seating on two levels with a bar type seating arrangement on one level. I had plenty of space to eat and use my laptop. The coffee served here puts Starbucks to shame. By far my absolute favorite home away from home coffee house! From the decor to the staff to the products - this place has it all! Their iced coffee made a hot day cool and comfortable. My youngest loved the vanilla chai. Hubby liked the coffee and didn't hesitate to let us get him some since we were going their anyway. Stopped in for a hot coffee after a walk by the mansions in Newport to take off the chill. The employees at the counter were very friendly and were helpful in suggesting some items to try. I ordered a Caffe Americano and my wife got a large hot cold brew coffee with steamed milk. Not the most extensive selection of drinks but the menu has all of the basics that you would expect. We also ordered lemon cake pond cake, pumpkin cake, and a Reeses peanut butter cookie. The coffees were pretty decent, but not the best I've ever had. The sweets were delicious.They roast coffee beans right in the shop which I found really cool. The big roaster in the middle of the shop was neat to see. They have several types of coffee beans available for sale and roasting and I plan to try some out. They do coffee tastings 1-3 pm on Sturdays. The atmosphere was really cozy on a cold early winter day. Bottom line, solid coffee shop with enough variety and things going on to be worth the trip. I will be back. read more

delicious chai tea and love the iced mocha! coffee is superb quality and I get my special beans ground for my French press here. staff is always nice and polite. Hip atmosphere, you can also sit outside on the patio. They have some food items but nothing gluten free/friendly. read more

Great coffee! I had a cappuccino. I have tasted many coffee beans around the world, so I am no novice...it was an awesome cup! It was my first time so I didn't know my way around, so the guy at the register had to explain things to me. He was thorough but I could tell by the look on his face and tone of voice that he was a bit irritated...so I give this place four stars. Though, a lady staff that brought the coffee to me was nice :). After all, a place needs to be rated for not only what they serve but also customer service. Excellent drinks, a bit pricey and a great selection of coffees of the day including a dark roast coffee of the day! It can be tricky to get a seat here some days, the shop is smaller than it appears. The parking lot is a bit of a fiasco as well. There are breakfast, lunch and snack options here. read more

I have been going here since I started working on island in 2006. The quality of their coffee and service continues to get better with age. Their by the pound coffee is arguably the best in the state, and certainly the best on the island. The cold brewed iced coffee is just what you need to jump start your day. I do not have a negative thing to say about Custom House Coffee. My only request would be to sell some extra dark roasted to the edge coffee beans once in a while, I'll buy em. read more

We came here today from Branford, CT for a snack. Had a med. Strawberry Smoothie, a Cafe au lait (medium roast) and a Strawberry/blueberry Yogurt parfait. Delicious! Ambiance was very comfy and homey. Service was great, too.We will be back. read more

I have tried many varieties of the beans from Custom House Coffee. I drive 30 minutes to come here and so do other members of my family. I buy whole beans but they will custom grind to your brewing method. The coffees are amazing! They are worth every penny and when you consider that you are getting a full pound of coffee, an average of $15.00 is not bad at all. Wish there was one closer but that won't stop me from coming here. With a military ID coffee is half price on Monday's. read more

CHC is a cute coffee shop in Middletown that roasts their own coffee and offers a selection of what appears to be some pretty delicious pastries. Their coffee is good but pricier than Starbucks -- I paid something like $2.71 for a large hot coffee as compared to $2.41 for the same at Starbucks in Seekonk. I'll go to CHC whenever I'm visiting my parents as I like to support local businesses, but I wouldn't use them for my daily coffee as they're a little pricey. read more

So far this is my favorite coffee spot on Aquidneck island. When you walk in you experience the immediate sensory overload that comes with most mom and pop coffee shops. However that is also usually paired with a promise for good coffee and food and Custom House delivers. The decor is typical with local artist works and the high school sports teams. Still, the photography from those local artists is powerful and whimsical. I really enjoyed admiring the pieces and would actually purchase some of it. I had the Naughty spiced chai. That's a cold pressed coffee with chai. Smooth, not too sweet, just perfect. The quiche was ok, but like pizza, just ok quiche is still good. Next time I'll try something else. Used to love going here, now I don't find myself wanting to go at all lately. Every time I have gone over the past few months something is wrong with my order. You want iced, you'll get hot. You want a decaf, you won't get it. And the thing that upsets me the most is when they don't give you the milk that you ordered. If you are vegan or dairy free in any sort you have to be VERY thorough in making sure they do not put dairy milk in your drink because if not, you will end up drinking it. I just can't be bothered with the hassle anymore and wondering if I'm really drinking what I ordered. read more

Nice little place, and I wish the sister shop in Portsmouth didn't morph into a poorly executed version of a gastropub. I stopped in here to watch and play at a Friday night open mike session. Very cool, low key vibe, which is always a pleasure to find, and the owners were friendly and welcoming. They put out free appetizers for the open mike crowd, which was a nice touch. After having spent the day exploring Newport we were close to this coffee shop and wanted to load up with lattes for the road back to Norwood Mass. The ladies assisting were friendly and helpful - and had great knowledge on their coffee - which was really good. Would definitely recommend it! Custom house has excellent Cafe Mocha's and a great vibe to it. Best Coffee House feel on the Island. Coffees are excellent and the Veteran discount and blends earn them extra points! I have driven by many times without noticing this place. I don't know why I ever bothered to drink the swill from quick stops on that road (Aquidneck). The coffee is great and so far I have had a blondie and a breakfast sandwich and both were tasty! Very friendly people and great service. I am partial to staff people who don't treat me like either a leper or a pain in the a@$ because I have a (well-behaved) baby in tow. I can see how it probably gets full and could be hard to find a seat but so far it hasn't been an issue for me. read more

Staff was extremely friendly and helpful; when my order was accidentally mixed up (English muffin instead of a bagel on my breakfast sandwich) they went out of their way to apologize, even though the sandwich was still delicious. First yelp review I have written: I drive by this establishment "Custom House Coffee" weekly and today I thought I'd give it a try since it didn't seem busy. First, the woman impatiently asked me what I want... Overwhelmed that I hadn't even had a chance to look at what they had to offer, I quickly ordered MEDIUM ICED CHAI (this is in caps because it's important) and whatever type of panini I ended up ordering. She then replied with the poorest attitude "spiced or vanilla!?" I replied spice thinking to myself jeeze all because I took a minute to think. Then after the 10 minute wait... No joke for a chai tea.... The woman handed me a HOT TEA.... I politely told her I ordered iced... And she replied "oh you didn't order ice".... I think I would know what I ordered. And then as she was correcting her Mistake whispered to the other woman "I hate chai it's disgusting"...I could go on about how poor the customer service was at this shit hole but honestly I will never return and I would recommend if you're in a good mood and want to remain that way definitely don't go here. If I could do negative stars I would... Let me start off this feedback with the people there rude as all hell like wow our first time there we were very indecisive yes but of course we should be for the price of the drinks $5 for a "large" which is the size of a regular medium iced coffee at dunks. Any how my boyfriend and I ordered 1 "large" frozen drink mine was a mocha cap with almond milk- which they were very unsure and disoriented about, my boyfriend got the white chocolate mocha- I was very thrown off firstly when they told me they didn't know how to make mine because it's all powder that they use like ok ummm where's the coffee and cappuccino you use!!!? When I tried it all I could taste was that nasty powder taste the chalky kind you get when drinking a bad protein shake or something blah! And we also both got "fresh" made bacon egg and cheeses that were pre made for who knows how long in the fridge they said it's already fresh from the morning when they make it so it's fine (with a rude attitude) mind you it's the imitation egg you find at dunks. Anyway $22 later and both of us only a quarter into our drinks and food we ended up THROWING IT AWAY because my boyfriend felt such a horrible pain in his stomach (I didn't eat or drink enough to get to that point) he threw away most of his food and drink as I did all of mine! So needless to say I was very sad about our visit because we went there mainly on the amazing reviews we found here on yelp. Do yourself a favor and GO TO MAS DONUTS 24 hours down the street amazing, fresh, and super friendly staff.. This is one of the best coffee houses on the island, hands down. And if you like espresso, this is the place to go - it would make any Italian proud. Aside from making great coffee, they always have the absolute nicest people working there. The owner, Bob, is also very friendly and dedicated. The place is decorated with lots of coffee related nicknacks and antiques, and they roast their own blends in-house. Loved the variety of seating areas , delish breakfast sandwich and the variety of creative coffee drinks. Going back for happy hour for the half off frozen drinks. I would love to give this place 5 stars, unfortunately it's only getting 3 because of the rude young girls behind the counter. I ordered a drink to go and while the girl behind the counter was making the drink she was complaining the entire time about how annoying it was. When I reminded her that I wanted the drink to go she rudely exclaimed that that was not how the drink was made there. After a great deal of protesting on her part she finally decided to simply pour the drink into a cup. When I got to the car and tried the drink I noticed it was filled with coffee grinds. I came in half an hour before closing time to order a very basic coffee... 1/4 decaf and the rest regular... it took 4 tries for the girl to make it... she couldn't comprehend what I was asking for... and then after the 4th time of it being wrong was very rude and gave me an attitude asking how I live my life this way and I'm not a good person.... My wife and myself stopped here on our way to Newport. We ordered a buffalo, chicken panini sandwich and a bag of potato chips. The sandwich was awful. The chicken patty did not taste like real chicken. It was chewy and the only flavor came from the melted cheese that was not good. We could not eat it and threw out most of the sandwich.
