I had almost lost all hope - I needed to pick up a pretty birthday cake at the last second, and I didn't have time to preorder it. Yelp came to the rescue, showing me D'ange with reasonably priced cakes on display for takeaway. Once I saw reviews on their cakes being not too sweet, I was sold. I stopped by around 1-ish on a Thursday, when parking was aplenty in the small parking lot. Walking in, I noticed some nice seating that could be perfect for catching up with friends or taking some quiet time to enjoy a pastry in peace. When I got to the display cases, I was a little disappointed to see a lot of cakes already sold out; however, I can't complain much - I needed something last minute, and they still had a few options to choose from. While I was browsing, the lady there offered me a piece of Japanese cheesecake to try. When I say "piece," I mean a PIECE - it was literally the size of my hand. I was pleasantly surprised by the generous sample, but not as surprised by how delicious it was! I'm not usually a fan of Japanese cheesecake, but I've been dreaming about theirs ever since then. Love at first bite, apparently? I'm definitely going to go back for a couple of those :) In addition to cakes, I noticed they sold a bunch of breads, pastries, slices of cakes, and drinks. Back to my reason for being there: I ended up going with the tiramisu ($35.) She boxed it up, along with a plastic "happy birthday" stick (there are 2 colors: pink & blue) and a matching candle. Not only was the cake itself beautiful, but the packaging was also aesthetically pleasing - both of which made me an extremely happy camper. Taste-wise, all the other reviews were right: perfectly sweet, airy texture, and an overall delicious cake. The lady fingers on the sides were a little stale, but I think their main purpose was more for decoration. My only warning is to be careful when eating the tiramisu, because a few people we served later that night choked on the thick layer of loose cocoa powder the cake's topped with lol Service was fast, helpful, and friendly. Leaving a review mainly because of great customer service from Vivian who had helped me order the customized cake. She was full of energy and really helpful/knowledgable in their variety of cakes. They also able to take same day order and we were able to pick up at the end of the day. We also purchased some bread and egg tarts. The egg tarts were perfect, not too sweet and lots of filling. Not giving 5 stars because the bread was good and soft, but lacked fillings, also the customized cake was delicious, but its shape did not hold and the cake broke apart when we got back home. I tried a bunch of buns here, they range in price from about $1.65 - 1.85. This seems a little pricey compared to the $1.25-1.50 range I see in Northern California or Ohio, OR the $0.75-1.25 in New York's Chinatown! Maybe this price range is more common in Alhambra. Still, the bread is soft (none of that starchy business that the Kee Wah in Northern Calfiornia does with their buns). The buns I recommend are: the green tea butter cream bun (lovely slightly bitter matcha green tea taste), the curry buns (it's hard to find good curry buns!), and the vegetable bun. The bun that I wouldn't recommend is the BBQ pork bun. They make it particularly sweet with the pineapple crust, and BBQ pork buns are nicer just savory. I had a slice of sesame cake too. It is so, so good! The black sesame is strong and the cream is light, quite complimentary. Also the Macau egg tart is nice. The outside is more coconut/crunchy rather than flaky like the usual Asian egg tart, but it tastes quite good. The egg part is well done: flan-like consistency, eggy, buttery, sugary, and sweet. WIFI is password protected. I didn't need it so didn't ask about it. Bathroom is for employees only. There are four tables, nice for a bit of studying. The place is quite prettily decorated, a dark-wood tables + shimmery overhanging lights & decorations kind of place. They play top-40s music from a radio station. $20 minimum for credit card use. read more

I've past by this place many times and never thought much of it and always ended up down the street at 85c for my bread needs. But boy was I wrong! I came here because I wanted cake and I just so happen saw that this place has lychee and black sesame cake so that spiked my interest so I decided to give this place a try. Also I saw the many post of the taro pineapple bun so that definitely made me wanna give this place a try. We get there and it's definitely very small but you're welcomed by the warm smell of fresh baked bread. We ordered our cakes and a coffee. The cakes were decent. Nothing to amazing but what BLEW US AWAY was the fact that we had asked for a taro pineapple bun but the baker said he actually wouldn't have any for a while. And we were quite bummed out and he asked how many we wanted and when we needed them by. We told him we just wanted to try it since we weren't sure if well like it or not. And we fully expected to pay for this bread in order to try it. Out of no where the baker comes out with one and said he's baking more right now and that he only had one to spare. So then he starts cutting it up to give us a sample! AN ASIAN BAKERY GIVING A FREE SAMPLE. never in my life. I was blown away!! But seriously guys. THIS TARO PINEAPPLE BUN IS THE BEES KNEES. And there is a taro filling inside. Immediately after taking one bite we told the baker well order 6 more and he was more then happy to make more for us and told us to return in a few hours. We came to pick them up and they were fresh and HOT. I will be returning many many many more times for this amazing bun and to try your other amazing breads. Come here and try the taro pineapple bun. Oh My Pan used to be my favorite bakery in SGV but D'ange has outperformed them. The very first thing I tried at D'ange was coffee pistachio bread. It is the combination of soft coffee bread covered with crispy sugar layer. Inside the bread is pistachio and shredded coconut. The bread texture is soft like cake. It's also not too sweet. My second favorite is cream cheese danish. I'm a big fan of cream cheese. This danish can satisfy my taste bud. The shell is soft and flakey. Cream cheese is given generously. One thing I like most about this place is most of their pastries are not too sweet. Service: 3/5 They're very nice and helpful. The baker seemed very proud of his products since he kept telling me how special his pastries were. It's kinda funny but I like that. They're actually very good :D. Price: 3/5 Kinda pricey. All of the pastries on the shelf are $1.50 and above. The other special stuff like danish or cranberry milky toast are displayed on the other side next to the cashier. This time he got me 8 different things.. 3 Pastries: Pizza pastry - I like savory things more than sweet so this was probably my fave..also got a cheese roll, let's see if it's better than Porto's, and the blueberry pastry! The black sesame cake..cake was dry but the flavor was strong! Lychee cake, I didn't like this..instead of cream/frosting they use custard of some sort on top! But they do put in the canned lychees which i love! Matcha green tea, gross skip this! But it is the prettiest one! Chesnut/Hazelnut - not sure which one, but this is probably takes second place! I came here with a group of friends a bit hungry and the instant i walked in, the place smelled like heavenly bread, or as my friends would say BUTTER. I was aching for egg tarts and came in only to get those but everything smelled so delicious. First thing i noticed is that this place is a bit expensive ($1.70 for an egg tart). I found the egg tart to be somewhat delicious but not the best i ever had, questioning if it is worth the price (most egg tarts around $0.50-$1.00). I tried the hot dog and cheese pastry i found it rather greasy and the mushrooms didnt seem to add a significant value to the pastry. A bit overpriced compared to other asian bakeries ($2.70 vs. $0.85 to $1.00) The taro bun was pretty delicious - I brought a few home to my roommates and they also enjoyed them, but the buns went bad in a few days, not a huge deal since they don't use preservatives. read more

Came here for the $4 after noon tea special which includes coffee/tea and a slice of cake. The three of us got two sets- lychee cake and pistachio coffee mousse cake. The lychee cake was alright. I wasn't expecting it to be so.. standard. It has around 4 alternating layers of regular sponge cake, and whole lychee with a top layer of a lychee flavored jello. The lychee flavor was refreshing and prominent. But the bite/texture of the cake was nothing to rave about. I was disappointed when the layers fell apart as you fork up each bite. The pistachio coffee mousse cake was decent. Both of the cakes we got were not overly sweet at all. While we were eating the cakes and sipping coffee there, the staffs were pulling out loaves of freshly baked bread out from the oven- the smell of fresh bread tempted us into buying a few of their bread home. (: I decided on the taro buo lo bread and the black sesame mochi bread. I am really happy about these two! I don't usually eat taro.. but the taro bread was good! The exterior of the bread was crisp like how buo lo bread is suppose to be.. and it's filled with velvety mashed taro! The black sesame mochi was like eating a black sesame tong yuen! The whole center was filled with black sesame paste and mochi. Both breads were again not overly sweet. Lunch Break Heaven :) ! Drinks: (following comments are based on my co-worker's comments/reactions) One coworker got a taro smoothie, while the other got a pineapple smoothie. Both of them agreed that it was really good and not overly sweet. For $4 or so, they thought it was steal because the portions were huge and on top of that the fruit smoothie was made with fresh fruits. After returning back to the office, I kind of regretted not getting one for myself ! Cakes/ Desserts: I ordered the chestnut cake and my coworkers ordered the creme brulee and lychee cake. We all decided to sample each others and all agreed that the chestnut cake tasted the best! Chestnut cake: The outer layer/ cream was not too much, it was slightly sweetened and tasted really light. I am usually not one too eat cream on cake but this one was worth the calories. As for the cake itself, it was super moist and the chestnut came in the form of a paste. Delicious ! Lychee cake: This slice of cake was pretty interesting, it did not have cream on the outside. Instead there was just a thin layer of lychee pudding on top and the cream was actually found in the middle. The cream resembled that of the chestnut cake but had some lychee in it which was a nice surprise. This too was not too sweet, so if you are a lychee fan this can be a fitting choice. Creme brulee: The custard was like any other but the sugar on top was not caramelized, so that was disappointing. I am so happy I found this little bakery!! It is dangerously good. My husband and I went to Golden Deli for dinner yesterday (it was amazing!), it was our first time there and we decided to explore the area after. We saw this little bakery across the street and got curious. We were greeted by a very nice lady. We walked and a looked around. I swear the intention was just to look around!! But then the lady gave me a cottage cheese danish to try, and I could not leave without it. It was one of the most amazing pieces of pastry I've ever had!! It was soft, moist, and yeasty, as all terribly good pastry should be. The cottage cheese was a bit salty which complimented sugar powder on top. It's breakfast time now here in Pasadena and I am happily eating my danish while writing this review. They pack all of their pastry in cute plastic bags which helps it not to get dry. Unfortunately, my husband is gluten intolerant and he has an egg allergy. He was just smelling the danish this time. But we thought if he ever decides to cheat this will be the place to go. Definitely worth cheating! The only thing I will add, I am not a cake person, so I probably won't ever try their cakes. But they were looking very average and not that much interesting. I found this place through a quick search on yelp while looking for bakeries that sells a variety of cake! I came here with my sister, mother, and of course, me. At first appearance, I was honestly shocked how nice and fancy looking the bakery is. As I walk in expecting some fancy-smancy atmosphere, my mind became so confused when Chinese music was playing. However, I really thought it was funny and ironic. Thus, I really liked the place setting, looks, and the twist of the typical Asian bakery in a non-Asian bakery setting. I came in around 7pm, when there was nobody in the bakery except my family. Service was great; we were greeted by two workers when walking in, and got our cake ASAP! Quick and easy. To my surprise, I was able to find the blueberry cake (8 inch) that I saw on one of the yelp reviews (which was like a year ago?)! I did come here looking for a birthday cake, and I quickly chose that cake since it was a first time I ever saw a blueberry cake. There was other cake choices, disappointingly not a lot of differences between each one of them unless you buy those mini slices. TASTE: The taste of the cake was a unique combo, the cake itself was chocolate (I believe), but it wasn't a heavy taste of chocolate. The cake was kind-of dry, but the blueberry cream made up for it's dryness. The presentation of the cake is great, had fruits with glaze and a few macaroons (3). PRICE: The prices in this bakery is on the pricey side. Every cake is ~$33 each. Mini slices of cake was around ~$3.60 (not exact price). They do have the offer of 10% off on birthday cakes if you check in yelp also! *Side note: The design of the cake box is appealing and eye-catching with their black box and red shoe-lace ribbon! *Side note 2: English is not their first language! It might be a little hard to understand! Although my family did not prefer the cake and its unique combo, I like it! If you were to order the blueberry cake, I'd recommend you to get it if you like odd combination foods and a not too sweet chocolate cake. My cousin and I drove to the LA area wanting to try some new and authentic Asian restaurants. After going to an excellent Chinese restaurant we decided to check out the Asian bakeries for dessert. After going to two bakeries we stumbled upon this place. Staffed by older foreign-born Asians we had a bit of fun trying to communicating with the nice older staff. The young cashier was very friendly. Seems to be a mom and pop bakery. We ordered different desserts and pastries. The service was excellent. Presentation was beautiful with above average quality. I just found this bakery the other day via the help of Yelp. They have a nice selection of 6" and 8" cakes ready to go. My favorite so far is the mango cake. This is my FAVORITE bakery in the SGV area! This is probably one of the priciest ones but the quality is TOP-KNOTCH! Favorites for sharing: - Jalapeno and ham bread loaf - these are usually on display behind the glass because they come out hot and usually sell out really quickly! It's a thick, delicious white bread with delicate amounts of cheese throughout, and some sprinklings of jalapeno and ham chunks to keep the flavor going. The outside is crispy and the inside is filled with a blueberry paste that goes wonderfully with the white bread - Also a huge fan of the taro mochi bun! How can you go wrong when you pair high quality bread, fresh taro, and just the right amount of mochi all together? - The Korean kimchi bun is a little too sweet for my taste, but it's definitely a change from the usual savory options you find in asian bakeries - The chicken pie is also good if you like your flaky goodness. But note, the sauce they use with the chicken is also on the sweeter side. What I avoid: - The Mexican coffee bun. I LOVE anything coffee flavored, but this one was disappointing. The coffee taste wasn't that intense, and the filling was kinda chunky and dry. WHY?! I really wanted to love you, coffee bun! - The Portugese egg tarts - lacking in crispiness and overcompensating in greasiness. Reserved parking in the lot behind the bakery for bakery patrons! Major downside to D'ange is the hours - they don't open until 9am, so if you're working or even a student, don't even bother dropping by in the mornings to get fresh bread because they're not even open until after you're at work/at school (unless you work abnormal hours).
