Who wants to talk to their dining companions when the food is this good anyway? Once you begin eating, all is forgiven. One standout dish (among many) is the Pollo alla Caprese. Perfectly thin crisp and juicy chicken breast accompanied by a fresh, vibrant salad of mozzarella, tomatoes, onions, and arugula. So simple, but so inredibly prepared. So glad a good Italian restaurant is in my hometown. I like that the waiters and maitr'd are Italians who speak Italiano. It just makes it more authentic on the experience. The cucina is delicious from the tri-colore salad to the homemade gnocchi alla Gennaro which has shrimp, asparagus and scallops in a tomato cream sauce to the tiramisu. Good portion on the gnocchi too as this meal in particular was fulfilling and I got leftovers to take home. The place is packed on Thurs night - good sign that this restaurant serves good food. Will come back for sure ...too bad it's not kid friendly (the seating is too tight and the chairs can easily fall backwards. Many years ago, a British colleague opined that a reataurant is only as good as its Creme Brulee. How eccentric, I thought at the time, but irrelevant as I could care less about dessert in 99 of 100 events. We've been here twice and loved it both times- food preparation was excellent, service was attentive yet not overbearing, ambiance is very warm and comfortable although noise level was a bit more than we would have liked. As is case in many NJ restaurants, it's BYOB which is a real advantage for us, we can have great wines without a corkage fee. Been to D'oro twice, and both times I have left very happy. It's a bit pricey, especially since the portion sizes aren't huge, but overall the quality is good enough that you don't feel like it is a rip-off. And when I say the portions aren't huge, that really just means that they are not overwhelming like a lot of restaurants. Since it is BYOB, the price evens out in the end, anyway. Extraordinary experience not only because the tiramisu and coffee were outstanding, but also because the service was better than average -- in fact, quite attentive, except for not offering coffee refills. Ate there tonight. From my understanding and feedback from others, this was an off night, but since it was my first and LAST time there, I can't give it the benefit of the doubt. Beside the place being small and FAR too over packed, you can't move in there. It took 40 minutes to just get bread. Another 10 before we heard the specials. Another 15 before we could order. Another 25 for our apps to come out. ALL SALADS and one meatball special app. How long can that take? Another 30 for our main courses. Mine was recommended. It was cold and flavorless. Not once did any server come and ask if our food was ok. Not once did they come around for more water. I had to ask 3 times for water. When we asked what the hold up was in the kitchen, our server was snippy and defensive when answering. That's fine... others can go and try this place. They certainly lay can have my spot. Stumbled in after an exhausting trip to the Short Hills Mall. Very surprised at the quality of the food and the service. As I normally do for my first visit, had a very simple meal, with salad and pasta amatriciana. Both were perfect. The service was on time and deferential. Will be back very soon. If you need a bottle of wine, there is a liquor store with a credible wine department 150 feet from the restaurant's back door. Very convenient. Moderate in price. read more

Went last night. Yes the place is packed and loud, but I like that! It has a real city vibe; the decor is simple and pretty and the place has a great energy. As said in other reviews, it's a BYOB which is great. The good is very tasty. Their cheeses are really good with all of the dishes and the food is fresh. Delicious cappuccino and dessert-lava cake is so rich I couldn't even finish it! Definitely share the dessert :) Service is fine, not overly personal (but I like that when on a date) but water was always full and plates were cleared immediately. This restaurant is amazing. Everything, from the ambience, to the food, to the owner himself. As if the restaurant wasn't amazing on it's own, Sammy, the owner, exceeds all expectations. He greets every guest with the utmost pleasure that it makes the experience that much better. The food is cooked to perfection, the waiters are quick and attentive and the prices are very reasonable for an Italian restaurant. I come all the way here from New York City because it is worth it. You feel like you are part of a family due to the treatment and how full and satisfied you leave. If you haven't already visited, please do so, you will not regret it. So many better choices in the area- Went on a Monday night since many places are closed. Was truly hoping this place was going to be good for that reason. But, it missed on so many levels. First the service.... where is it? I guess it's the owner that also waits tables and had one busboy with him? Come on- to many tables to pull this off. Needless to say, this place turned what would have been a 1hr in and out dining experience into a 2 hr saga- Now the food, we had three appetizers -caprese salad with what was said to be buffalo mozz (no shot) this was ordinary run of the mill mozz. The portion was so skimpy 2 pieces of mozz on two under ripened tomato and two strips of sweet peppers for $10? Come on man! Also, a stuffed Portobello, which was totally bland and not seasoned at all, and the calamari, which was pretty good. We had the strip with peppers and potato, which was cooked perfect and had nice flavors, Gnocchi that were plain awful. So chewy and dense. We skipped dessert since to that point it had been over 2 hrs. When we asked for the check. The waiter/host/owner told us the credit card machine went down. So, I walked next door to the bank and got cash and we were out. Maybe a bad night for them, but we will not be back to see what a good night looks like. read more

Food was delicious. Waiters were nice. But a few flaws. The waiters have hardcore accents so when he asked if i wanted water somehow i got a bottle of it that cost $8.... when i asked for cheese on my food, the waiter oddly said to me "the chef doesn't recommend cheese". Very strange comment. I don't care what the chef recommends, i asked for cheese. Also the portion of pasta in the shrimp scampi that i paid $30 for was tiny. Other then that. Two weeks ago, we had requested a table near window for our party of four because two of us have hearing problems and the main dining room is extremely noisy.. We were told it could not be reserved, was available on first come basis. So we arrived early, the table was free, but we were told it was reserved and was only for a party of five anyway. Minutes later it was given to a party of four. The owner told me the table he gave us was quiet. It was very noisy. He had lied to us. With arrogance. Terrible. The food was bland. The spaghetti was practically raw and the owner called it al dente, then tried to blame us for not telling him we wanted it well done. Who orders their pasta well done?! The worst part was that this place is bring your own and the table with five women next to us was out of control yet the waiters kept pouring them more wine. They were throwing the flowers on the table at each other and shouting. When we finally asked them to calm down, they threatened to 'jump us in the parking lot'. We had a few senior citizens in our party (80+) who got very scared. We alerted the owner they they threatened us with assault and he shrugged his shoulders and said there was nothing he could do. I tried to tell him that he was responsible since he kept serving them more wine and it was his establishment and he just waved my concerns away. Sam is super friendly, and will always accomodate almost any special request. They did an excellent job of renovating this space (which was the old 'Danielle's') and the room now offers tall ceilings, spacious seating and a nice decor. The food is fantastic, starting with the pesto oil spread that comes with the bread. Apps are all great, and the little seafood pot is a great mix. Straticella soup is very good, as is the pasta fagoli. I love the veal franchaise, the pork chop, all of their pasta dishes, and their daily seafood special is always fresh and cooked to perfection. Warm, friendly, attentive staff always sends us home with a little sip of some local spirits from their country. We frequent this establishment weekly, and I always look forward to the food as well as the experience! read more

Started with the buffalo mozzarella which I thought was quite good. Ordered as my main the New York strip. I found the steak to be a bit overcharred on the outside although it was cooked properly. What I didn't like was the "Italian French fries" that came with it. It was just over fried greasy potato chips and this pepper onion mix with it. The plate looked a mess. The good before the bad...very nice inside, the decor is "rustic" and soothing with lots of yellow and creams. They have a very nice mural. They seat you right away and the food literally all came out within ten minutes, and that included appetizers too. The bad - BECAUSE it was brought out fast, my food was not completely cooked. I ordered rigatoni bolognese and the pasta was still very hard. The sauce for it was very good though. Lastly, we had no one check on us for the longest time. We kept signaling to get our check from anybody that was even passing our table but they kept attending to the other tables until we physically had to get up and ask the nearest waiter. read more

I must say I was surprised by our experience at D'Oro, and not in a good way. When we first walked in, there was no host/hostess so we ended up waiting for 10 mins and then tried to walk through the dining room just in an attempt to find someone to seat us for our reservation and were then told to go back to where we were waiting and wait again...still, no host/hostess. They should have some sort of signage like "Please wait to be seated". After finally being seated, it was clear this place was not following Covid guidelines. The tables were crammed together and the place was packed, the few waiters that were working (2) were wearing gloves but they were absolutely filthy, the waiters kept touching and lifting their masks, and they kept putting their hands on the tops of all the glasses. We even tried to politely order bottled water instead as the waitress originally handed us our water glasses while touching the rim of the glasses with her hands, then when she came to deliver the bottled water + new glasses she touched the rim of those too. They just seemed totally overwhelmed and careless. The food, unfortunately, was mediocre Italian. Overall, pretty disappointed by the food/atmosphere/service. read more
