Nothing about this hole in the wall place was a miss, well maybe the lack of space is. Anyway, the hit is of course the food. We ordered two favorite dishes, the fish tacos and the shrimp burrito. Both very flavorful and filling. Since there's no space to eat, we ended up dining in the car. Each dish is a Cali-Mex with fresh veggies and fresh fish (although very tasty, I'm not sure if the shrimp is fresh out of the Hawaiian waters.). This is the hidden gem on Kauai. Doesn't like much since it's a hole in the wall next to a weed dispensary, but it had amazing food. Big servings, and very cheap. The reviews here are what dragged us to this place and we're kind of shocked that it's so highly rated. While I wonder if this is just because there is not a lot of Mexican food on the island, I question what all the other places taste like. For cheap food near the beach, this is where it's at. I highly recommend you order on the website so you don't have to wait in line, then wait for your food. We just drove up and grabbed our food and headed to the beach while the line was like 15 deep. I didn't wait even a minute. You can even order for a time in the future if you plan to pick up later. My veggie burrito was okay but would've liked more flavor in the beans. They were out of black beans (so I got pinto) and the only rice option for vegetarians/vegans is a plain brown rice... kinda boring. They were out of chips, too. The cabbage is good and the lava is spicy, but not unbearable. I liked the sriracha sour cream and had that put on the side. After running out of options for food since everything closes on the island before 9pm we gave this Mexican taqueria stand a shot. Needless to say they close at 8pm so beware but we went back a couple days later and ordered 2 burritos. One pork which was Kalua pork and one that was fish (Ahi). We were pretty disappointed first because I guess they sautéed the fish and I could hardly taste it and it was upwards of $17! And the pork was better but again had very little flavor. Actually given all the add ons like spicy sauces, beans, etc both were pretty no gos. They just didn't have flavor. And the bill came out to some $35 dollars with tip. The one thing they should def not do is be careful when they use their pico de gallo since if you add too much liquid it will make the burrito soggy and almost unable to eat by hand. Also there is no where to sit. It is simply a window next to a little market in a small strip mall. Overall we were kinda disappointed so we never went back again. Oh man our family LOVES da crack. We come here every time we visit Kauai. The burritos are massive and so delicious. We like the chicken and pork. One of the better burritos place I've been to, and probably the best that the island has to over and for a very good reason. The burritos are mighty tasty and mighty huge. You will get your money's worth and they even have shrimp as a meat option, but it costs a little extra. Also, as it is almost everywhere, guac is extra. They don't serve beer, but head next door to the supermarket and buy some there. The biggest issue here is that there is nowhere to really sit and eat. They should have a few tables or something. Blogs, friends, etc. but still, we tried to come levelheaded with little expectations. So we ordered 1 fish taco, 1 shrimp taco. I ordered Mexican rice. Had a bite of my friend's pinto beans. The garlic shrimp taco was descent. It was my favorite part of the meal. Mild is not spicy at all, which is totally fine. But I've had far better shrimp tacos. The fish (marlin today) taco was awful. It was dry. So dry. Not seasoned well. Oh my goodness. I just don't know what people were raving about. The pinto beans were dry and flavorless. The rice wasn't really Mexican rice. It was just okay. Okay is being generous. The line was medium long. We waited about 20 minutes. I don't think it's worth it. Service was good though! We're heading to get a makeup dinner now. read more
