Rice cake skewer- Delicious, spicy, slightly sweet and crunchy. 10/10 would get this again. Pork belly skewer- YUM. Chicken feet skewer- Pretty good. Shumai skewer - ... this tasted like the frozen shumai you'd get in the freezer aisle. Spongy, bland and overall wouldn't get it again Scallop skewer - Ordered this but never got it. Hanwoo beef skewer - Also YUM Vienna sausage skewer - I'd skip on this. It wasn't too memorable. Spicy chicken skewer- Chicken is tender with just the right amount of spice. Chicken skewer - Tasty and not dry: Black sausage skewer- Plump. Strong flavor with no metallic taste ( positive). Beef short rib skewer- YES. Tender pork skewer - Definitely try this one too. We never got our scallop skewers but if they charged us for it, we can't tell because they don't provide an itemized receipt when the bill arrives. Overall definitely worth coming for skewers and the grunge ambiance but keep in mind this place is BUSY. Items might get lost in all the movement. Came on a Sunday night & it was pretty busy. But thankfully we got seated pretty quickly, like 15 mins this was at 5:30pm. The inside is really dim but it's an interesting experience. When you get seated, they give you a soup. Which was pretty good since it was raining. We chose a few different skewers, all the beef skewers were yummy. And got one bottle of soju. Came in late on a Tuesday night, went with a party of four; and they called our name but we weren't there but they accommodated and made us next in the line! They have a valet, but if you want to park in the street, it's almost impossible on a busy summer night. Karen was our server, she was great and very attentive, but noticed that after asking her to give us a little more time in our order, she didn't end up coming back until about 10-20 minutes later, but she recognized she took a little longer and we thought that was very attentive of her. Thank you Karen! Ordered the Ddeokbokki, Red Snapper Sashimi, Chicken Gangjung, and Fried Dumplings. We ordered some skewers too, but in order to get them you have to buy an alcoholic beverage. The interior is dark, the vibe is late night eats. The walls are littered with personality and character; not so much vandalism as it is charming. For the prices too, this place is great for large groups with large portions and after a Dodger game or a busy night at the club. Inside is very dark, rustic looking, it can get crowded for two people but for groups of like 5-6 they do have booth tables. Service is super efficient and since the space is small its super easy to get the waiters attention. You MUST order an alcoholic drink in order to get the order sheet for 1.99 skewers (beer offered). Then you get the order sheet for the first round and order via waiter for the entrees you'd like- which they have a lot. If you want more, you'll have to flag down the waiter and put the order in. They give free cut veg with ranch and a spicy clear soup at the beginning as "free banchan". You can get full with skewers. I love the variety they have! My favorites were the beef and spicy rice cake ( actually does have a kick). The scallops are smaller than typically expected but everything tasted fresh. The mushrooms are button :(. The only thing is that sometimes the chicken/beef can be overcooked so its a hit or miss. They do have the grill flavor but not the charcoal flavor of true Japanese yakitori u may crave. It's been well over ten years since I last reviewed my favorite Korean spot in LA. A lot has changed since then with me drinking way less than my college days and most importantly, going plant based. Does Dan Sung Sa still hold up to being my favorite K-spot in town? I can wipe away a tear because yes, yes it did. And I am so glad the vibes and food are still top notch. This spot has gotten so popular in the last decade. I took some out-of-town friends recently and was shocked at how busy its become. I've seen it be featured on No Reservations and the advent of social media popularizing places, so I was worried they'd be too 'gentrified.' Luckily, food is still solid here. They still serve their complimentary radish soup, the portions are still huge, and the menu still vast. The staff were able to help me identify some vegan friendly options and while limited, there were some big hits here including: - Tofu with Topping: fresh, sliced tofu topped with a spicy dressing which they said was vegan - Mung Bean Jelly Salad: a refreshing bed of greens with mung bean and a similar sauce as the former My entire group loved these two even though they had the items I once ordered such as the crispy chicken and the tteokbukki. Some other big changes now - there is no longer smoking indoors (thank goodness) and babies are allowed. Yeah, let that sink in just a bit. While it's not exactly the same as it once was, DSS still holds up to expectations and my friends and I had a wonderful experience. I'd be happy to return once again in the near future. read more

Once you go inside you're instantly transported into what looks like a Korean street food restaurant. Limited options for sober folks. If you don't drink, you can't order items #1-26 on the food menu which honestly really ruined the experience for me. Doesn't matter if you're AA, allergic, or by choice, that's the rule they've set for their business. We order spicy pork bulgogi $17.99, and two spicy tuna hand rolls $2.99 each, and it was rather disappointing. Pork bulgogi was average and the hand rolls had very little filling (as expected due to the price point) but wasn't anything special. Service was a bit aggressive for a slow night, not gonna lie. We had so many people come up to us asking if we were ready to order when we were clearly still discussing what we wanted from the menu and it overwhelmed me like they were rushing us. Definitely more of a bar than a restaurant vibe and probably better to come with a larger group, with at least one person that drinks. This restaurant is located in a small shopping center which is really easy to pass by it. There is plenty of street parking available and couple of parking spots in the shopping center. Dan Sung Sa is a Koreatown staple, and it definitely delivers on the casual, late-night pub vibes. The ambiance really feels like an old-school Korean hole-in-the-wall pub, which adds to the experience--somewhat similar to Dwitgolmok. Just know that service can get a bit slow and the wait times can be long as it is quite the popular spot to hit. If you're coming for just dinner try to come a bit earlier even if it's on a weekday. Saero Soju & Kloud Beer - Saero at $19 a bottle feels a bit steep for Koreatown, which was surprising. Kimchi Handroll & Spicy Tuna Handroll - The kimchi handroll was surprisingly good considering it's just nori, rice, and kimchi--simple but flavorful. The spicy tuna handroll was solid as well. Hanwoo Beef Skewers - This was pretty mid. Didn't stand out, and honestly, I'm not sure why it's called Hanwoo beef when it's clearly not. It seemed more like a choice cut of beef (maybe skirt steak, but I could be wrong). Probably the weakest dish of the night. Pork Belly Skewers - A much better option than the beef skewers. Classic, reliable, and a good staple to order for the table. Black Sausage Skewers - Easily the best thing I had here. It's basically fried soondae served with a spicy dipping sauce, and it was extremely well executed. This will be a must-order every time I come back. Overall, Dan Sung Sa is a fun spot with some standout dishes, but not everything is a hit. If you go, definitely get the black sausage skewers and pork belly, and maybe skip the beef. This is a spot for great night eats and drinks. There is no digital waitlist system so you have to go in person and put your name on the list. You have to be there when they call your name to get seated. The wait is very long. Both time I came it has been about 2-3 hours. I would come out my name on the list, and go do other things. The food is very affordable and the portions are huge. I am a big fan of their seafood pancake and bossam. They also give you complementary cabbage soup which is refreshing and delicious. As for the skewers, you have to order alcoholic drinks to order the skewers. The place is very small and you may be seated very close to other parties. Service is not good here, but that's to be expected for a busy restaurant bar. If the person is not server, they will not help you. If you don't tip good, they will chase you down and ask why. My favorite out of all of the skewers is the short rib skewers. I have tried most things on the menu and they are all pretty good. Initially discovered this place because of an Instagram reel, and even though we live an hour away, totally worth the drive for the food. Servers are usually running around so it might take a minute to get your drinks and food. But it's what you'd expect at a popular, busy restaurant. Parking can be a bit rough. My friends and I all work in the food service industry so we 100% know how it is. However, the service here was so below average - we literally saw our server once. Then had to flag down other servers to get water and the bill because he flat out never came back to check on us. After paying, another server (who we didn't even interact with at all inside) chased us outside and demanded an explanation for why the tip was low? We saw this restaurant on IG and decided to come by for a weeknight date night to try something new. Dan Sung Sa is located in a plaza in K-Town with a paid valet parking lot that's shared with a few other Korean restaurants and a karaoke bar. The place has a cool theme, as we saw online with grungy graffiti wooden walls, and servers dressed in Military uniforms. Our servers kept changing as they didn't seem to be assigned but everyone sharing all of the tables. The first thing we were notified was that the $2-5 skewers could only be purchased if you buy an alcoholic drink, which was unfortunate for us since we don't drink and were excited to try some of those out. We ended up ordering a beef bulgogi and glass noodle plate, pork belly with salad, and corn cheese coming out to about $50. The water came out in a teapot, and weirdly it was yellow, and yes it was water... The service was hit or miss as the food came quickly but we ended waiting over 20 minutes after eating for our check to arrive. The food was pretty good, but the bulgogi had jalapeño peppers in it, I've never seen that before so it was pretty spicy. Not sure if they meant to use bell pepper but chose jalapeños instead? The food here is very flavorful and was exactly what we were wanting after a concert! However, the customer service and atmosphere confused us and made it a less enjoyable diner. Parking lot is valet only so park on the street - at least thats what it was on a Saturday night. I tell him I don't see that anywhere on the menu we're just here for food. He tells us that this is policy and that if we don't drink we can't eat here. Just went 0 to 100, I thought we just couldn't order specific items now he's telling us we can't eat there anymore. We ask him if we move to an actual table would that be okay he said yeah. So when another server walks up to us asking if we're ready to order we ask her if she could move us to a table since we are not drinking, she walks away from us and comes back to tell us that anywhere in the restaurant we have to drink if we're going to order from the specific 1.99 menu. I tell her this is insane. I've been here before and I didn't drink and I was able to order from that menu. She snaps at me and tells me I'm a liar and that I need to order something to drink. She walks away from us mid convo. To avoid further conflict, we ordered a small sake. When the food arrived, one dish (squid stir-fry) was not as described and tasted spoiled. So when the Server came to check on us, I told him it tasted like it's gone bad I would like to return this. He said yeah no problem we can make you a new one. I tell him no that's OK. I don't want it anymore. I don't think the squid is fresh just take it off the bill pls. The server became aggressive, yelling and accusing us of trying to scam the restaurant. Telling us that we are not taking anything off the bill. You ordered this and now you don't want it how dare you come into this place and order food thinking you shouldn't have to pay. I tell him that is not the issue here I am willing to pay for my bill but I'm not going to pay for something that has clearly gone bad He starts yelling at us AGAIN. I couldn't even understand him. That's when my friend got upside and told the waiter you know what we need to speak to your manager. This is getting out of hand. The server starts yelling saying I'm not going to get the manager, you go get the manager, that's the manager right there, you go speak to her, you get up and talk to the manager. I'm guessing she saw this whole commotion and she comes up to us. We tell her Everything that has happened and she responds with, "yeah he's right that is our policy. You guys are just gonna have to pay for what you ordered". I tell her AGAIN about the food tasting expired, and she responds with an attitude saying well we've been selling this item the whole night and no one else has complained about it and I said well that's none of my business what other tables are willing to eat or not. She says listen we're just trying to be careful with people trying to scam us. My friend tells her you know what either you take that off the bill or we just don't pay at all since you wanna consider us scammers. Another back and forth happens.She leaves and comes back with a change in her tune saying that they're going to remove it off the bill and how sorry she is. We tell her we just want leave and pay for our bill. When we received the bill, it was handwritten and unclear. After requesting an itemized receipt, we discovered we had been double-charged for another item. Even after correcting it, the staff continued to show a poor attitude. Overall, we were pressured to drink, served questionable food, treated disrespectfully, and nearly overcharged.
