Great flavors, big portions. We came with a reservation and were seated immediately. They were super accommodating with us adding another person to the original reservation. The ambiance was nice too, although it could get pretty loud. FOOD Kale chaat (5/5): Fresh, crunchy, and flavorful. Must try. Pork belly bhutwa (4/5): I like the char and crunch of the pork belly, but I'm not sure if I liked the sauce (or the combination of the pork belly and sauce). Chicken momo (3.5/5): I was a bit disappointed by this dish since it seemed like a signature item! It was still good, but maybe since I haven't had Nepalese food before, I didn't know what to expect. It was similar to a dumpling, with a thick tomato-y sauce. Dhadhing chicken (5/5): My favorite curry. It was a thinner curry, and reminded me a bit of a Burmese curry from Burma Superstar. So flavorful, and the chicken was tender. Butter chicken (5/5): Really good. It was heavier and definitely the more overpowering of the four curries that we tried. But still, flavors were great. Saag curry with paneer (4/5): A creamier curry. It was a little less strong in flavor compared to the two curries above, but it was pretty good. Baigun tarkari (4/5): Solid curry, but not as memorable compared to the others. Overall, great food experience. But although the service was mostly good, I was a little surprised that the machine automatically calculated the tip % to be on top of the subtotal + tax, which I hadn't seen before. I stopped by for Sunday lunch with a few friends and we ordered almost everything vegetarian. Kale Salad: this was unexpectedly nice. I couldn't even believe it had kale in it. I liked the freshness and texture of this salad/chaat. Paneer Sekuwa: I was a bit disappointed with this dish. It's literally 4 small cubes of paneer served with some onion and bell peppers. Good but not worth my buck. Samosa Tarkari: the samosas weren't very oily which was good, they seemed fresh and crisp. The chole with it tasted nice as well. I'd recommend this dish. Steamed Veggie Momos: I liked the momos with the sauce. The wrapper seemed a bit chewy but I guess it could be because it was sitting on table for couple mins. Dal Makhani: I liked the buttery part of daal, but it seemed like chef had focused only on the butter part. I felt it was low on the flavor from spices. Bhindi Tarkari: I really really liked Bhindi. Crisp with onions and garlic. I surely recommend this item. Garlic naans were fresh and fluffy, no comments for that. I only want to point out that the service is pretty slow. Just a beer can take up to 15 mins. From the staff perspective it seemed there was one chef and one server which could make things really slow on a Sunday afternoon. read more

We went a little close to closing time so we were really worried that the Currys and naan would just be reheated, but the chicken curry was honestly the freshest out of them all! The chicken was so fresh. The spicy cauliflower was really good, very spicy and crunchy! Kale chaat was actually one of my favorite dishes there, super delicious and fresh! I don't love kale, but I really liked this. Chicken momos were delicious and the orange sauce was delightful and acidic- balanced well with the flavorful momos. Garlic naan was very VERY fresh, seriously!!! The only thing I didn't really like that much was the chicken curry itself, again the chicken was very fresh, but I thought the curry lacked in some flavor. Originally when we walked in, i thought this place gave a much more date-night type of vibe, but after taking a better look at the clientele it didn't seem to be the case. Everything we ordered we shared and we really enjoyed the food. The momos, biryani, and goat curry, were especially good and easily recommend those dishes. The fried spicy cauliflower was the surprise of the bunch, it was not at all what I was expecting, in the best way. The naans and samosas are solid dishes that are a cut above average. It feels like Dancing Yak has fallen from grace as one of the most hyped and popular restaurants in town. We went around 9 PM last night and the overall experience was lackluster m; from the service to the food. The hostess seated us, the server took out our order (never saw her again until we closed) and another server shoved the food on our table and scurried away without saying a word. Definitely did not get the "care and attention to customers" vibe. As for the food, the Naan was overcooked, the Seafood Curry was a disappointment, and the Momos did have decent flavor but the filling easily slipped out of the dough. I just was not feeling the overall experience but would be open to another visit to hopefully enjoy Dancing Yak as I did two years ago during my first visit. read more

We came here the other night with 5 people night so we were able to try much of the menu. Amongst the stand-outs the goat curry came out on top. Goat can be dry and d stringy at times, but this was as tender as they come. The curry itself was the best of the curries we had(although all were outstanding). The kale chaat was so flavor intensive every single person at the table was delighted. It comes covered with some powder so you really aren't sure what you're eating, but whatever it is, give me more! Better yet, that dish was thrown in as a freebie, which is always nice touch. We came here on Sunday for dinner around 7. There were no tables left, so we sat at the bar. We ordered the dhading chicken, garlic naan, white rice, and baigun takari. Everything was really delicious. The dhading chicken was very tender, and had a delicious sauce with a runny texture. The baigun takari was also really scrumptious with a strong roasted eggplant flavor; it had a more scoopable texture. I could eat both of these sauces by the spoonful. Service was a bit tricky: they wouldn't seat me without my date and were insistent upon it (I know this is standard at some places but I was ready to start eating). I took a good while (15 mins) to be noticed once we were seated. It was pretty busy though, so our experience might have been a one off. The food: We ordered a little bit of everything and it was all hits and no misses. Absolutely delicious. Our personal favorites are the butter chicken and the goat curry. We came in shambly from a rainstorm and noticed we accidentally counted wrong for our reservation (1 more person) and they were so nice and accommodating! The food was great and very flavorful in all the right ways. The momos are really good! I was pretty impressed by them and they come 4 dumplings to a $9 order which is nice for sharing. For dinner we had 3 curries and an order of Biryani - the curries were so flavorful and aromatic but extremely mild in spice which was surprising to me. I think I would have preferred a little spice but maybe that's just how the dishes are supposed to be? The biryani did have some kick behind it though, which I thought was delightful while my friends found themselves reaching for water and an extra scoop of the raita. The curries did not come with rice included, but we ate them with naan instead. -- we had 3 curries and 2 naan BUT we had to order an extra naan half way through... so I think you really need **1 Naan per Curry** as a good proportion if you decide to forego rice... Or maybe my friends and I are just bread goblins idk. Now, the only unfortunate thing about our night - and my reason for not giving 5 stars - was that we very specifically asked for accomodations around a nut allergy... Unfortunately, when the biryani came out, it had been garnished with a mix containing 2 small cashews (!!) - rendering the BEAUTIFUL looking and smelling dish completely inedible for our party. ---- Thankfully the kitchen did immediately fix it for us by remaking it and I am really grateful for their service - but it was still a little careless, and almost caused a big scene if not for my friends eagle-eyed catch. The chicken tikka and naan were very yummy but also pretty standard; the stars were the pork belly and the momos. The pork belly was crispy but juicy, loved the seasoning on them, and the tomato chutney was a perfect pairing to helpto cut the grease from the fatty parts of the pork. The chicken momos and the creamy dipping sauce were so well paired, and I appreciated how the filling was super well seasoned and juicy, and the skin of the momos were thin but not soggy. 10/10 would come here again to try more Nepalese dishes!! After moving to San Francisco, Dancing Yak has been a place that I regular! Usually, you can make a same day reservation online, and there is no cancellation fee unlike many other places in the city, which I really like. Don't arrive too late though! The restaurant is always busy with a waitlist. But, if you have a reservation, you are seated very quickly. The service here is truly A+. Everyone is friendly and fast, and the waiters/waitresses have great recommendations. You cannot go wrong with the butter chicken and a side of garlic naan. I have taken multiple groups of friends here, and that dish is always a crowd favorite. The chicken is tender with a slightly grilled and smoky flavor, and the sauce is decadent and delicious--not to mention, the naan is warm and fragrant. The corn side dish is also really good.
