My son asked me to take his car to be inspected and I wanted to go somewhere close to where he lives rather go all the way back near my place in Alexandria. After reading reviews of several shops I chose to to Dan's Merriifield Sunoco and I couldn't have been any happier. When I called it was getting close to the time they stop doing inspections but said if I could get there by 6pm they would inspect the car. My son also needed new wiper blades so when I arrived I asked if they would have time to do that do and the answer was, "Sure!" The service was prompt, professional and courteous. They even drove my son's car right to the door for me and thank me for coming in. I certainly will be stopping by Dan's to fuel up anytime I'm over in that area visiting my son. There are so many average or mediocre businesses that it is a pleasure to be able to support one that is excellent. I've been going to Dan's Sunoco for years to service our cars. I just happened upon them one day and have not gone to anyone else. My relationship with Chris has been one of trust and honesty. Chris has always treated me with respect and has given me time to discuss his experiences with cars and the issues a car may have. The quality of the work is also a reflection on Chris' integrity. I observe him speaking with his staff to ensure they understand what needs to be addressed. I usually call Chris if I have any questions and he always takes my calls and gives me the educated and honest response that I have come to expect as it relates to my cars. He also lets me know what I can do now and what I can wait for, which means that he's not looking to pull a fast one on me. That's truly what I have come to appreciate. Sure I've had my share of hefty service charges, but as long as I know what I'm paying for and it's explained to me and I don't have to come back for re-work, that's the reason I keep coming back. read more

I'm not sure how this location has so many good reviews. Until I saw a review saying that they offer discounts to customers who write a good review about them. I went to get my emissions and inspection done. Passed my emissions and failed my inspection for a broken lug nut, which I thought was a bit odd. I didn't get the guys name, but he said it was rusty and that's how it broke. Turns out they purposely broke my lug nut. They wanted to charge me $113. My brother-in-law spent less than $10 on the parts I needed and fixed it. He confirmed to me that the employees at Dan's Sunoco purposely broke it and my lug nut was not rusty/old at all. Complete rip off. Takes days to repair your car for minor items that other places will fix within 20 minutes. Says they will call you back in 3o minutes, or after they eat lunch, and you won't hear from them the rest of the day. Upcharges you for parts/emissions/inspections almost $300 difference from other places. If you want to over pay and wait days to get the results for your car then this is your place. read more

Not only did they fix a tire a chain store told my wife couldn't be repaired (and tried selling her on a full set), but they also reset sensors said tire store had jacked up (at no extra charge). Basically did great, yet inexpensive work, and just recommended wheels balance, rotation and alignment to extend tires' life. Need an inspection? ladies, if you are by yourself, do not come to this location. Went for an inspection today. My car is well prepared for the except of a crack in the center of the windshield. This crack did not obstruct the driver view nor did run end-to-end. What I read in the VA State Police manual tells me it should have pass. These inspections are very subjective. The gentleman I came with got passed. I called someone very familiar with these inspections and sent them a picture. I was told that it really could have passed. We have been going to Dan's Merrifield SUNOCO for over 20 years. We used to live right around the corner but now live over in Annadale and still make the drive over to have them maintain our cars. They have serviced 5 different cars for us: Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai. They are always welcoming and are very communicative. Chris and his team never try to upsell you on service and are honest about what work is needed and what can be deferred. When they fix something they actually fix it. I have not had to drive back to rework anything. I also love the fact that I can drop off or pick up our vehicles 24/7 which suits our busy schedule. I have been getting my car checked at this sunoco for over two years now and today was the last time. THEY ARE AWFUL! DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. This is WHY: There was never any consistency in the mechanics' assessment of my car. I took my car in for a regular oil change and inspection/safety test and when I picked up the car -- the noise the car makes when the doors are open wouldn't shut off. The owners (Dan) asked the mechanic who worked on the car to take a look and he said it may be an electrical issue. Then they asked another mechanic to take a look at the car and the noise by that point had turned off. So he automatically said well I guess there is nothing wrong with the car. Then the mechanic proceeded in saying that there must have been something wrong with the car when I brought it in the day before. I was fuming! There was absolutely nothing wrong with the car the day before. BUT I guess this is how Dan's Merrifield relieves itself of the responsibility of busting perfectly fine cars. btw - this is only one of many such incidents. Awesome service! I was a total mess this AM. I went to this place based on the good reviews I've seen on yelp. The state inspection line went pretty fast, only two cars ahead of me. Once I finally got up there I went inside to wait (they had two chairs in the food shop area), when I suddenly realized I didn't have my wallet, car was already on the lift and everything. Like the crazy woman I am I ran over and said sorry I need my car I have to come back I don't have my wAllet to pay! Mr Nguyen was totally nice and told me it was okay. First of, after you read the post below I'd like to direct your attention to an article in the Washington Post called "Its a Hot mess" dated July 12th, 2012. Its an article about repairmen (A/C repairmen in the case of the article) who dupe unsuspecting customers (people in dire need of a professional), i.e. customers who are none the wiser. The article applies to the majority of us. The following story is yet another example of a repairman trying to dupe a person in need. I give these folks two stars (a gift) because they all seemed courteous. Anyway, we towed our 02' BMW 325i in on Friday for overheating problems. On Monday, a comprehensive analysis showed a lot of repairs were REQUIRED. We asked for an itemized receipt. It had a bunch of this and that, i.e. we HAD to change both upper and lower radiator hoses $329 for parts and labor, HAD to replace the thermostat $276 for parts and labor, HAD to fix check engine light $178. Plus, a separate charge for an ANALYSIS (fancy way of saying "diagnostic") of overheating issues $203 US dollars. 30 dollars for one gallon of "BMW" coolant. In all, roughly 830 bucks. If we had stayed, I would have demanded to watch them empty an actual "BMW" coolant container into the radiator reservoir. I realize I sound mistrustful. Its not unfounded. This immediately set off red flags. My fiance had to repeatedly ask "WHAT are the items that are actually REQUIRED to be fixed??" They finally responded with -- both hoses, and the thermostat assembly. So, those plus the ANALYSIS came to about 650 bucks. By the way, most places do not even charge for the so-called ANALYSIS if you choose to repair the vehicle on-site. Even dealerships disclose that if they do a diagnostic and you decide to repair the car there, the fee is waived. NOT AT DAN'S! Anyway, we weren't really certain what needed to be fixed but the charges sounded quite ridiculous, so we used our towing coverage through insurance and moved the car elsewhere free of charge. It turns out that only the upper hose and the fan clutch HAD TO BE REPLACED, which the fancy ANALYSIS worth 200 dollars didn't even uncover. The thermostat was absolutely fine. Final charges for total repair were 350 dollars (LESS THAN HALF) those fabricated by the repairman at DAN's. So, whats the lesson learned? Don't go to DAN'S. Or if you are in an unfortunate position to end up there because your car overheats and dies right in front of DAN'S, then get a second opinion. I came across this place as an emergency when my drive shaft literary broke off on my drive to work. Not only was I terrified, but almost got hit on the fast moving ez pass lane. I took the Lee exit and to my surprise, there did this little gem. I pulled up and noticed a shop, but figured it was mainly for oil changes. When I went on to inquire I was grated with a smile by the individual at the register. Then Chris came out and I described the loud noise my car had. He assured me that it's something they can work on and that he would call me once he find the cause. Chris keep me abrace of everything from the diagnosis, parts, labor, the whats, who's and why's of my vehicle...very thorough. As a woman I'm very skeptical when taking my vehicle in to new shops. That feeling quickly vanished as Chris put me at ease with his professionalism and vehicle knowledge. Very caring and professional shop. I picked up my vehicle the next day and even received a report with future recommendations. They now have a faithful customer! read more

I have been patronizing Dan's Merrifield Sunoco for years, usually for only routine car servicing or repairs given that their operation is smaller than a regular dealership obviously. I co-own a 2014 Jeep Cherokee that gets heavy use and has had SO many problems since we bought it used about 3 years ago. I usually take it for major problems to the Jeep service place (and have invested thousands of dollars to keep it on the road in the past 2 years), but this time with its multiple problems including front end noise when turning, a rough drive over any uneven road surface, and a non-functioning heater in the dead of winter when the driver has to leave for work before 5 a.m., I decided to give the work to Dan's Merrifield Sunoco. Chris and his staff not only rapidly identified the three major problems affecting the car's performance, but Chris did the extra leg work to get the extended warranty company to pay the lion's share of the repair costs, including authorized Jeep parts. The Jeep dealership had previously been successful in tapping the extended warranty company for only the odd part and never labor. But this time Chris went above and beyond to document the safety aspects of the needed repairs, get a rep from the warranty company to see the problems in person, and then authorize almost $3000 towards the repairs, leaving me to pay only the deductible and the cost of one small part. I can't emphasize how important this attention to securing the repairs while also protecting my pocketbook was to me. Personal attention above and beyond what I have ever found elsewhere. read more

My Mazda protege needed to have the spark plugs replaced. I called around. American Lube on route 50 would give me a "deal" for 100$. Another Sunoco station in the area would do it for "somehere between 100 to 125$." Chris at this Sunoco gave me the estimate of $51.00. Wondering if this was a bait and switch where the mechanic would magically find other items that needed to be fixed "immediately,'" I went to get the service done. In no time, I was out of there, new spark plugs, crazy cheap price, and no surprises except that everyone there was professional and friendly. ita been several times use this shop for all change and i always wrote 'use synthetic oil. but yesterday i just got a car from dealership its 2014 toyota camry se and i wrote in the piece of paper 'oil change only,pls use syhthetic oil. but today while im chacking my car i noticed my washer fluid was empty and they charged me $71 for the oil changed and its included on there the $3.99 washer fluid filling up. i was soo dissapointed about that washer fluid empty but i got charged. now makes me think if they even really use synthetic oil on my car. for those several times i did my oil change there just this time i get a chance to check there job. read more

About as bad as a garage gets short of outright criminality. My car languished at Dan's for over a month while I kept getting reports that they had not had the chance to look at it that day, or that the guy who looked at that problem was out. At one point I was told the car was fixed, so I picked it up only to have it break down about three miles away. By way of explanation, I was told the person who had worked on it wasn't their best guy (seriously). I was then called to pick up the car twice only to find the dashboard had not been properly reassembled. The third time, I gave up, paid, and drove the car away just to get it away from that slipshod operation. In summary, my experience of Dan's Sunoco in Merrifield was of extremely poor quality assurance compounded by lousy customer relations and a weak work ethic. Oh, and they charged me an arm and a leg. The bottom line is DON't trust them. DON'T give them your money. Just DON'T go there. read more

My wife and I have been taking our two cars here for the last 5 years or so. Prior to my current to my vehicle, I've owned nothing but clunkers & lemons, so I've had my fair share of interactions with mechanics in the NOVA area. With that being said, I've had nothing but positive experiences with theses guys, especially Chris who always goes the extra mile for us. They are very direct and honest, and do not try to up-sell or scare you into spending money. They take to the time to tell you exactly what the situation with your vehicle may be (in layman's terms), and lay out your options and price points. Prices are very reasonable and they get you in and out as fast as possible. Hell, now you can even walk next door to have a beer while you're getting your oil changed. read more

In spite of previous posts claiming Dan's Merrifield asks patrons to post positive reviews on Yelp, this wasn't true in my case. Being in outside sales myself, I know sleeziness when I see it. Sometimes I think I invented it. Anyway, my car is basically my office, and my office's brakes were grinding metal to metal. I'm just too busy of a guy to take care of things right away. If procrastination were an Olympic sport I'd be a famous gold medalist. So I basically pull into this random Sunoco very frustrated because it set my work day back a bit. I could literally smell the rotors burning, so it had to be done. I was pleasantly surprised at how painless the process was. The guy that helped me (I assume was Chris) was very polite and direct. Gave me two options, I asked the cheaper one and asked for an oil change. Only took a couple of hours while I worked remotely at a little restaurant next door. The pocket book took a hit of $400, but that's my own fault. Coulda saved me a couple of rotors if I did it sooner. Just charged for labor and parts. No "diagnostic" check or whatnot. They did a great job and were very friendly. read more

Chris is honest and conscientious. The best measure of a mechanic, in my opinion, is if you take your car in hearing a weird noise and the guy turns you away free of charge after explaining whatever is making the noise and why it doesn't need to be replaced -at least not right away. This happened to me a couple of times over the years going to Dan's. When something does need to be fixed, Chris explains in detail what is wrong and what they are going to do to the car. He is really good at helping a layman understand the mechanics of it all. I never felt that I was being taken advantage of or mistreated there. read more

Went there for some tires to be put on and state inspection. Guy who does the inspections avoid at all costs. First, he is very condescending and he looks for anything to fail. He was gonna fail me for my window not working but he was pushing the wrong button. (Do you want to trust this guy with your car?) When I got my car back I found they had broken the handle to adjust my seat and not even told me. I went back in very angry and talked to Chris the manager. He was nice and understanding but pretty much said these things happen and he would talk to the owner. I highly doubt anything will be done about it. read more
