First time trying this place and it will be our "go to" whenever we visit Atascadero. We don't come this way too often so the boys found them on Yelp and we were beyond satisfied. We came in with a a large group after a baseball game and they called in a cook, I assume Dan, and I think another server to accommodate our group of 14. Everyone in our group was very pleased with their food and the service was amazing. My husband said the fries were the best he'd had in years! Our only regret is not trying the pastrami after learning about it from the very kind and helpful waitress who waited on our other table. The waitress for our table was great too! We'll come back another time to try it for sure. Good was amazing, this is the place to try frog legs for the first time. And the place to have frog legs if you had them they are on a whole other level. The burgers are big and fantastic. The service was amazing and food came out hot off the grill. Portion size was perfect if you are hungry it is definitely the spot for you. And once again best frog legs ever. Can't even tell you how much I love this place. Service is top notch and the food is yummy! Have had the Nashville hot chicken sandwich a few times now and it makes me feel like I'm right back in Nashville. Prepare for a heated experience of deliciousness. The perfect heat with the pickles and a soft bun to soak up all the additional hot sauce. I've had take away and ordered in. The entire staff is always friendly and make you feel like the amazing friendly service that is more Nashville than SLO county. If you haven't been, get prepared for an experience. This is a worthy find, my Yelp friends. In an uneventful trip down 101 from SF to home, I stopped off for some gas off San Anselmo, and while fueling up starting checking out nearby places on the app. Low and behold, very close by was Dan's The Grub Shack, sportin' its 4.5 stars and all that. Score! What I expected was an experience. A converted shack serving up grub, grits, and all things fried -- along with a kettle of soup and chili. Instead, it was in a little outdoor mini-mall, with absolutely nothing of a stand-out, bad signage, and a little bit of a letdown. I opened the door, and was faced with a little café. Cute, short, and narrow -- with a super welcoming and nice gent. I took a seat, looked at the menu, and knew I was in the right place. Unique burgers, sandwiches, fish & chips, fresh brisket, fresh pastrami, and yes -- chili, soup, and all types of fried stuff (artichokes, jalapenos, pickles, etc). Upon their recommendation, I got the Fish & Chips, made with fresh cod. Lightly breaded, seasoned gently, I could taste the freshness in every bite. It was 6 pieces, each 3-5 inches cut thin -- I liked how they weren't huge pieces. I could easily tear off a small chunk, dip it into tarter sauce (also housemade), and nibble on their fantastic fries, which were lightly battered and double-fried. Overall, I'd rate the F&C 4.5 stars, and for $11.99 -- it was a phenomenal choice. With the wonderful service, good food, and well-priced menu -- I'll most certainly be back. I can never quite tell how formal I should be when addressing this restaurant: Is it THE Grub Shack? Or simply Dan's Grub Shack? The menu, signs, and multiple website can't seem to agree one way or the other, so I guess only Dan knows for sure. I suppose that formalities really don't matter, because Dan's is a hillbilly-themed restaurant! From the various caricatures and murals on the walls, to the rolls of paper towels adorning each table, and the vinyl-fabric tablecloths designed to look like parquet tile, Dan's oozes "class" with a level of commitment that few restaurants (outside of Dick's Last Resort) are brave enough to attempt. Dan's provides the ultimate realization of hillbilly culture in food form: strange items and combinations that are deep fried. It's not just comfort food, it's back porch/rocking chair/moonshine food. But none of that matters. Let's get to the fries! The question is, WHICH fries? There's an overwhelming amount of options! Collectively, they're known as Crazy Fries, but they're all described differently. This is so refreshing to see! When other restaurants limit themselves to frying potatoes one or two ways, Dan's staff looks at all their ingredients and says "We could probably mix those together." To start off, the basic fries and tater tots are $3.69. All the other appetizer options are $7.69, or half price for a half order. Garlic Fries or chips come with melted parmesan cheese. Marie's Sweet Potato Fries, I believe are sweet potatoes made by Marie, but I didn't get a chance to ask her myself. Then, Sidewinder fries are cut like thin wedges but twisted and covered with their burger seasoning. Finally, Buffalo Fries are thick-cut chips served with a spicy seasoning and a warning for the uninitiated. Among this cavalcade, I picked out for today's review the Garlic, Sidewinder, and Buffalo varieties. I asked for half-orders of each, as pictured. If you're coming to Dan's you're hungry for plenty of comfort food, but you might want to bring a snack for the wait. Though the staff is friendly, our order wasn't taken to the kitchen for at least a half hour after we were sat. My theory: the servers are aware of the wide variety of meals in the menu and provide extra perusal time for newcomers, or they're really playing into the hillbilly theme and assume that literacy isn't everyone's forte. Luckily, when the food does arrive, it comes out hot and fresh! Starting things off are the Sidewinder Fries. I've got to say, for all three orders, the basket size is disappointing, especially for the price. Though these are half orders, the number of individual fries is so low that I felt I had to fend off passersby from my valuable little hoard. Since the Sidewinders are essentially transmutated steak taters though, the quantity doesn't matter as much as the quality. And just like steak fries, the insides are perfectly warm and mushy. The crunchy outside is thanks to the slightly seasoned batter, yet the unbattered shell is well-cooked. The "burger seasoning" that was sprinkled atop the order is a mild salt and pepper and paprika and onion powder seasoning. Next are the Buffalo Fries. They're really not fries though: they are thick cut ruffled chips. These are actually softer than the Sidewinders with a thin layer of shell, but that shell is crispy and provides the strength needed to handle dipping sauces. We were warned that this was the spiciest option, and were expecting some sort of curry flavoring, but again, there is only a mild kick within the batter, and the taste only slightly more bitter than the Sidewinder fries. The bite-size cut of the chips is good, but there are still not enough of them. Finally, the garlic fries! The fries are just frites proper, but expertly cooked to a well-done gold. The garlic is sprinkled lightly onto the fries but is mostly contained in the melted cheese, and they pair very nicely. The cheese is not overwhelming, but the garlic lingers with each bite. There is a collection of extra juices and leafy remnants at the bottom of the basket, but the fries are so crunchy that they are immune from the risk of sogginess. These are the best garlic fries I can remember ordering, and even a half-order provides a good amount of potatoes, but the cheese and garlic make the dish filling. One warning: the shells are so crisped that any hot oils that did not escape the frying process are captured within the fries, and it bursts out! The prices at Dan's (The) Grub Shack are the source of my hesitation. S7.69 is quite a lot for appetizers listed as "grub," and the portions of the half-orders are put to shame by so many other restaurants. The food is fine. Some of it is really good, some just kinda average. Portions are generally on the large side. The mac and cheese burger sounds awesome but in actuality it's pretty meh. We've been customers at Dan's for years but have visited less and less lately. Last night I was reminded why and I've decided that I've probably paid my last visit to the Grub Shack. The owner has grown increasingly rude over the years and last night I witnessed him being truly mean and ugly with one of his employees right behind the front counter in plain view of customers. Regardless of how you may feel about the work of your employees, have a little class and take it up with them in your office, not front of house. The employee even responded "You don't have to be rude about it." Dan's response was along the lines of "You think that was rude? You got another thing coming. Now hush." This place doesnt look like much... which is why I've been coming to the businesses around the restaurant several times a month for years- and never gone inside. Until last week when I was desperate for something to eat while waiting for my kids to be done with the dentist. And wow oh wow. They are great! Again - not much to look at on the outside or on the inside. But the staff is so nice. And the food - is very good. Especially... their garlic chips - they have the perfect amount of crisp - with the just right level of garlic. - theyre perfection in a box. My kids devoured the chicken and fries proclaiming them to be "terrific". Their Grubhub sandwich garnered high praises from my husband as well. The one downside is they are on the pricier side - and the price is on that line of "is it worth it?" The sandwich, strips and chips ran us $40 - ouch. read more

A great little gem in Atascadero. I was here for business and didn't want to eat at any franchise joint. Saw this place on Yelp and gave it a shot. It was extremely slow at the time I went there, which got me worried. Once I walked in, it was clean and was greeted and seated immediately. I ordered a Cowboy burger with fries. The fries came first. Something unique about them...they have a nice crunch to them. The burger was amazing! It had a 3 onions rings on top of the patty and was covered in BBQ sauce and melted cheese. Definitely will visit again. read more

I genuinely don't understand how this hole in the wall gets the reviews it does when we have so many other options in the area. Now that they hiked up their prices, the quality (or lack-thereof) of food just is not worth it. You can go to Jack's in Templeton and get a better version of literally anything Dan's has for the same price, and in some cases, for less. It cost me a staggering $23 for a sandwich that would've cost me the same with a side of amazing garlic fries at Jack's, and wouldn't have made me immediately sick, as this one did. I can pay $6 at Subway down the street at the outlets and get a better overall experience in food quality than I can at Dan's. At least Subway makes a fresh sandwich. As a third generation baker who is married to a former bread baker, if you're going to put a sandwich on a dutch crunch roll, it better be same-day baked. If it's not, don't bother. Just put it on a different bread and stop wasting your time and money with the supply chain for your crappy dutch crunch. A toasted hoagie is leagues better than even two-day-old dutch crunch. If stored correctly, it can charitably still be called dutch crunch the day after baking, but otherwise it quickly becomes dutch ugh-this-tastes-and-feels-like-cardboard. read more

Holy smokes this place is like heaven on earth. There isn't much in the same strip of buildings besides Dans and a goodwill so I almost missed it driving by but it is well worth the search. It is casual and down to earth and Dan makes you feel at home, I say down at a table and he took my order. There are plenty of options and something for everyone. The portions are gigantic and the combination on each sandwich were awesome. It reminds me of F*** your diet in Orlando Florida with the non conventional choices. I got the fried artichoke hearts, sweet potato fries and the farmhouse burger and everything was literally perfect.i also got a breakfast burger (half pound sausage patty and bacon to go and it was gigantic) I was fortunate enough to get served by Dan and able to talk with him a bit while I ate and he was very gracious and made me feel at home. My cup never was empty and was checked up on numerous times. I wish there was one in south county but will be coming back every time I am in north county.
