We took my visitors for lunch at Dave's Fish and Chips over the weekend.The fries were soggy and the coleslaw had a medicine-like taste it seems pre-package and not made fresh in-house. The dining experience was such a disappointment. Besides that the group who came after us was served ahead of us. I noticed a couple of instances where there were water drips on my food. I didn't make much of it until I actually saw a drip coming from above and so when I looked up I saw that it was dripping from the A/C vent on the ceiling over where I was sitting. I immediately notified the manager. The manager's response was "thank you for notifying us... thanks for letting us know" that's it and walked away. She never even expressed any concerns about the water that got on the food I was eating. Didn't even offer anything to make things right. I was a bit taken aback and when I expressed my disappointment her argument was that we just closed the bill and so she couldn't do anything about it anymore. I asked for the owner's contact information. I even asked for the owner's email address and was told that they are not a big company and so they don't have an email address. Which I thought was another ridiculous response. When I went back to the table I told my family about what had happened. My husband thought it was ridiculous as the manager could still reverse the charge and make some adjustments if she really wanted to make things right. I went back to talk to the manager and you can tell she got frustrated and was a bit annoyed. She asked me for the receipt and reversed the charge and credited me for my meal. It's just disappointing, it felt that I almost had to haggle for it before she would do something about it. This is not the way to run a business especially in an area such as Steveston Village where you are mostly catering to visitors/tourists. It's just that the manner that it was initially handled was very poor and was lacking high standards in customer service. I suggest that whenever you have a bad experience especially in a restaurant make sure you speak up - you pay hard earned money for good food and expect great dining experience otherwise there are other places you can choose to bring your business to. read more

This food was awful. The place was busy and stuffy but we got a window table pretty quickly. We were staved and ordered the crab cake appy, the seafood platter and the calamari dinner to share between two. It was ALL terrible, tasted frozen and the oil in deep fat fryer hadn't been changed since who knows when. The old oil made everything dark brown and burnt looking. The batter was too thick to eat on my crab cake, it was as hard a hockey puck. And mush inside. This indicated frozen product- at premium prices. The calamari was also too hard to eat and when asked the waitress admitted it was frozen. They wanted $17.00 for Costco --type frozen crap. The seafood platter wasn't much better and after scraping off the ghetto-batter off, the portion of salvageable edible fish was meagre. We left hungry and disappointed. After asking to speak with the manager, who never came to the table, we got a deduction of about $6.00 on a $45.00 + bill. Never again and I advise you-all to avoid this place. Came here as the family wanted to. Two groups were sat before us that had arrived after us. Waited for 45 minutes to finally be sat. All the while an empty table was left empty with a reservation sign on it. Coding was greasy on top of all of this. Extremely disappointed. Not coming back. Which really won't affect this place...but not tipping will. read more

This place is an absolute fave of mine, in terms of fish and chips. Their proportions are great, flavours are delightful, although service may be lacking. Don't get me wrong though, the servers are nice and all, but there's just something missing, and I can't quite point it out at the moment. But yeah, I visit this place more often in the summer, but winter times are chill too since the place is not that busy. I love this place, and they never really have off days in terms of fish and chips. btw, I always get cod for the fish and chips combo, but the halibut is actually super good, too. read more

I ordered the gluten free, plain fried fish with a side of mushy peas and yam fries. The fish was very dry but edible. The mushy peas were not like any mushy peas I ever had, and yes I've had them both canned, imported from England, and in pubs. These were inedible and disgusting. The yam fries were delicious, but mostly because the tartar sauce I dipped them in was just so sweet and tasty. As for my dining companion, she had the regular battered fish and it was bland and flavourless and dry, and did not taste like cod. We decided not to go there anymore. I am giving two stars for the tartar sauce and the decent yam fries and the cute porthole on the door. read more

The staff was simply okay, we were served by a non-enthusiastic waitress. The food above average but not the best, the breading of the fish had a nice taste to it, I ordered the calamari and just one piece of salmon and my boyfriend ordered the endless chips and I decided to take some just to sample it and when he asked for some more fries later on, we were then told that "It's not considered endless chips if you share it." which now seemed like a waste of money. I took my family out to this restaurant on August 31st. I recommended it because in the past we have had good meals here. All four of us did not like it. For instance, the fish was tasteless, the Caesar salad tasted bland and were not good (we suspected they were pre packaged). The only thing that was good was the cole slaw. We have been a customer for years but I don't think I will return. Maybe my wife will give it another chance sometime and if that is bad you will never see us again. read more

We went for dinner and both of us had the halibut and fries ($19.95 for 2 piece). It is the thicker part of the halibut cut that is very dry and hard to eat. I don't know how anyone could enjoy eating this stuff. There is better fish and chips in the Steveston area. read more

This is THE place for fish & chips - better than anything else in Steveston, or greater Vancouver, for that matter. Breathtakingly fast, perfectly cooked, and never an issue with my request for a ton of extra lemon. I'm not usually a fan of either chips/fries OR coleslaw, but here I practically lick my plate clean. Onion rings here are also yummy, and Russell Brews make the meal a treat. We ALWAYS get the halibut - I'm assuming the other fish is as good. read more

It had been a few years since I'd been to Steveston and I'd always enjoyed Dave's. I brought my children with me and was excited for a yummy lunch. However, the service was the WORST I have ever experienced at a restaurant. I felt ignored and watched my quite some time after finishing our meals as other tables received their bills and had their dishes cleared and we were completely ignored. It was not until I got up from our table with jackets on that I received the bill. As I paid and handed back the debit machine I didn't get a thank you or anything. Also, don't trust their website as it is out of date. I had a choice to head down their on a Monday or Tuesday and chose the Monday as the website says it is "kids day", but when I asked about it the hostess looked at me like I was crazy and went to ask and came back with "our website hasn't been updated". As for the food. I ordered one piece cod and chips. It was good, not worth enduring the poor service. My parents have found their fish to be inconsistent and have experienced a strong fishy smell and taste in the past. I would recommend finding a restaurant with a view of the water since in beautiful Steveston and likely you'll get some better service elsewhere. read more

Sometime when I read these reviews I wonder who some of the writers are. I have lived in Steveston all my life (I`m 61) and Daves is my go to place for fish in chips. Fish and chips are pretty good everywhere in Steveston every place a bit different. Daves is a fish and chip place so rhe comments on ambience and service is what ever. Food and portions are good, local kids working while at school, don`t know if any Fish and chips joints have Michelin stars but been to the so called best place in London England and for C$33 for one piece of cod in 1996 they wouldn`t last in Steveston or Whiterock. Pajos is good but gets too many tourists so only go when its off season. Fish and chips in Vancouver are all good. Tough town to survive if you aren`t and people in Vancouver know their fish read more

Too oily. Oil tasted bad. Fries too. So much batter and hardly any fish, and as a result couldn't taste much fish. The Fish burger was just a regular piece put on a bun. The Fish burger should be cut to fit the bun. Processed Cheese on the burger. They forgot the tarter sauce. I had to run back for sauce. Cashier didn't apologize. The tarter sauce tasted cheap. Consistently the best fish and chips in the MetroVancouver area. Battered and fried to perfection. Not too much batter, just a nice amount - traditional batter as well, plus the fries are thickly cut, fresh and delicious. It was all crunchy on the outside and moist and delicious on the inside! The service is OK and it's fast. The fries are very tasty and they have the brown vinegar - which is awesome with real french fries. Enjoyed it very much - however - a word of warning - after you eat fish and chips here it destroys the experience if you try to have it elsewhere as you'll be disappointed if it's not Dave's. read more

Absolutely disgusting- frozen rubbery fish. French fries tasted like they were cooked in dirty oil that never gets changed. Pajos down by the pier is much better. I couldn't finish as it was so gross. Cute atmosphere. read more
