We came here with a voucher with a monetary value. Where you can order what you want and the limit was $24 anything excess you would have to pay for it, + tips and tax. I ordered the ribs and my girlfriend ordered the burger, the ribs was good. But while eating the burger my girlfriend found a long piece of plastic cling wrap within the burger. We didnt mind but thought we should at least inform our waitress of the situation. We called over our waitress and told her what was happening, and her response was "ok". No I'm sorrry no nothing. We were like what the heck? Wheres the service that everyone here is talking about? We then overhear the waitress informing the manager/owner about the situation, he notices that we are looking at him, and he shrugs it off, once again no apology no nothing. At a loss for the authentic American diner experience, the greasy spoon, or those old gaudy, diners with jukeboxes that harken back to Bea Arthur and the Golden Girls, I find myself at Deacon's Corner. It is a rather unremarkable place in so many other cities--and yet, here, in Vancouver, where breakfast is the maligned sibling to the Caesar-soaked shindig that is brunch, Deacon's rather straightforward take on good breakfast food seems special if only for its simplicity. I should have gotten the chicken and waffles--I assume that's why you're coming here, right? Well, on a bit of diet, I limited myself to egg breakfasts, and while Deacon didn't disappoint, it didn't wow either. My scramble was uninspired, though I realize calling a plate of scrambled eggs 'uninspired' misses the point of scrambled eggs to begin with. So they were fine, beyond adequate even, and our table was plied with copious amounts of cheap hot sauce--as it should be. Service mimics something of a U.S. 'greasy spoon' or a Vancouver dim sum restaurant where staff are not woefully absent but they're hardly glad you came either. Our belabouring over the finer points of the menu, was not warmly received. The decor inside feels a bit scattered--especially on the fringes of well-curated Gastown, where Edison bulbs hang demurely from so many cute stores and restaurants. Ordered Benny's and the waiter came back 8 mins later to say that our order wasn't in the system and he had to take it again. I love diners. So much. Having brunch with my beloved after a date is one of my favorite things to do. I really WANT Deacon's Corner to be great. The food is pretty decent, and I love the choice of having a greasy fried chicken and biscuits dish for breakfast. But the service is so poor. The servers are always hard to track down. They aren't in any hurry to get your order or refill your coffee. I see them chatting it up with each other and socializing with friends at the counter, but ignoring all their customers. I heard about Deacons through the paper. I have been searching for a breakfast resto to replace my old skool diner style Pauls Cafe on Fraser and 45th. Pauls was great back in the day but has changed owners numerous times and has fallen off. Back to Deacons, they have HUGE servings, and the hash is great (seasoning salt and some spice) I went for the biscuits and gravy, and I LOVED IT. gravy has some of the sausage in it, white gravy with pepper, simple and great. service has been great everytime I have gone as I have been back quite a bit since. pancakes are great. I have only gone for breakfast, not sure about lunch but everytime a burger or fish and chips go by I deff think about it. if you are looking for a new age diner style breakfast this is your place. read more

New hours! Oh, great! "Have A Seat" - I'd love to, but all the tables outside are a mess. The ones that don't have dishes left on them obviously don't get routine wipes when they DO get cleared. This is a cute little diner with a wide selection on the menu. I went there for a late lunch, around 3:00 PM, and was seated promptly. I ordered the fried chicken, which was two pieces of boneless breast, fried, with fries and gravy. It was pretty darn good. The batter was tasty, the gravy had a bit of spice to it, and was delicious as well. The portions are generous for the price. I also ordered a slice of their homemade pie for dessert. What disappointed me was the service. It took a bit to get someone to take our order, and the food came in a reasonable timeframe. The food came without gravy, and when we asked for it, it took about 10 minutes to get it (while our food was getting cold). We were told there was a new waiter working that day, but he left during our meal (meaning off duty). We asked for the pie, and it took about 15 minutes to get it. We asked for the bill, and it took another 15 minutes. There was a waitress, who was very sweet, very professional and was really working it, but she was the only server working the entire diner! While the diner was not packed, most of the tables were occupied, and it was just too much for one person, no matter how efficient, to handle. read more

Never again. We came here at 10 on a Sunday morning after reading great reviews in the Georgia Straight about the down home charm and great food. Pure fiction, that. It was just the two of us; we like booths, and the restaurant was only half full with no patrons waiting after us. The waitress, who looked like a cast regular from "Portlandia", informed us that they saved booths for bigger parties, and would we please move to a table. Umm, no, we'd prefer not to, to which she huffed, "Fine. I guess you can stay there." Really? I'm planning on paying you money, could you lose the attitude? My husband ordered the French toast, which was massive and perfectly cooked. The lone bright spot in our adventure here. I had the pancake, side of bacon, biscuit, and real maple syrup. The pancake was gummy, the bacon undercooked and sprinkled with powdered sugar, the biscuit was burned, and they charged an extra $2 for a shot glass of maple syrup. Our waitress brought the food over, but never checked back. When we finally got out check, I told the waitress that I would not be paying for food I could not eat. She looked at me like I had broken all Ten Commandments at once, and had to have a conference with her equally surly looking manager. To their credit, they took the biscuit and bacon off our ticket. I was here with a few of a my coworkers last Sunday for a late lunch at around 4 in the afternoon. We were super tired after a long day at work and decided to finally sit down and eat. When we got inside the diner there was like 2 servers and 2 other tables being occupied. I was thinking great that means food will come quick cause I was pretty hungry. I ordered the Gastown breakfast. My two coworkers order the Giant Pancakes and their special of the day. The food did come quickly and the server did come back and checked up on us. The food was really good (I hope it wasn't cause I was hungry). But I will give this place another try for their Beef chilli fries. I'm not giving this place a 5 star because I still see improvements such as their service didn't wow me (like went above and beyond), the food was good but it could be better like the toast could use a bit more butter. I would suggest to others to give this place a shot. Just parking might be an issue as I believe it's only street parking because there was no sign that said they have a parking lot. Does anyone get service training at this place? First thing when we walked in the hostess asked if we'd like to wait 10 minutes for a booth instead of ushering us to one of the several available tables. We said we don't mind where we sit (which was a mistake), so they brought us to a table for 4. As we sat down, the hostess seemed completely oblivious to the sugar spilled all over the table, but another staff came over and cleaned it up while my girlfriend went to the restroom. When my girlfriend came back to her seat, she jumped up as she found she had just sat in sugar that had been wiped off the table and onto her seat. That's when we realised we should have waited for the furthest possible seat from the door. Most restaurants of any kind have a reception area at the entrance that's at least slightly isolated from the dining room. Not at Deacon's Corner - it's just a wide open dining room right when you walk in. This means that our table which was somewhat near the entrance got a hearty gust of minus 2 degree wind every time someone opened the door (which was pretty much constant). Two minutes after our coffee was served, a waitress came by with coffee to offer refills. I couldn't help but laugh a little as I said "no we're fine" (all our cups were still full when she asked). Finally our breakfast arrived (actually it didn't take very long). My french toast was three slices of the largest loaf of bread ever made, sliced nearly 2 inches thick.... Me (seeing the waitress put down a plain-looking syrup dispenser with my french toast): Is that the maple syrup? Waitress: Yes. Me: Uhh... Waitress: Oh, you wanted the REAL maple syrup? Me: Yep, the real maple syrup I asked for that's $2 extra on the menu. She left and returned quickly with a tiny shot glass of "maple syrup" to spread thinly over my ginormous plate of enough french toast to feed a small family. As we ate, I noticed one of the waitresses went out the front door about 5-6 times to pet her dog. I didn't pay attention to whether she washed her hands or not when she came back each time, but I thought it was kind of gross to see waitresses playing with a dog in between serving food. By the end of the meal, I was full and everyone else was picking at my remaining 2 lbs of french toast. Twenty minutes after asking for the bill, the wind was gusting in from the opening and closing door, and we were all too frozen to wait any longer, so we went up to the counter to find our bill and pay. I heard great things about this place and I have tried their cream of mushroom soup and fried chicken and I was quite pleased with it until my last order which was the Chicken Giant sandwich. A nice piece of breast meat deep fried as usual but the cheese they put in the sandwich was nothing but regular processed cheese? I can't believe that they can't afford to put real sliced cheese on their $17.00 sandwich!!! Not very good business sense if you ask me. Sent them a message thru their website and did not get any reply back from them and that was 2 months ago. Followed up with them with their direct email address (as previously I left my concerns on their message board) and finally got a hold of Brian. His reply is what surprises me especially considering that he is in the hospitality industry. I would post the whole conversation but feel that would be stooping to their level. Suffice to say is that their response sounds like more of a dismissal and acknowledges no wrong doing. I've been to this place and typically its pretty good (aside from the weirdy spiced shredded hash browns and the sometimes snooty waitress), but after this last time I don't think ill ever be going back. Came in with 3 other people on a Friday in the afternoon, wasn't too busy and we were all excited to have a yummy, filling meal. We all ordered, and waited around for our food to come. My friend had ordered a new menu item, pancakes with pulled pork. Once the first two meals came, the dopey waiter informed my friend in a super non chalant way that he forgot to tell my friend they were out of pulled pork and asked if he wanted to substitute for another meat. That's like ordering a poutine and being asked if you wanted teriyaki sauce instead of gravy..anyways, since the whole reason my friend ordered the meal was because it was the pulled pork, he said no to a substitution. The waiter seemed insulted and my friend asked for a menu to order something else. Since by this time everyone else already had their food and it would take at least 15-20 minutes to order something else, he just decided to share what another friend had ordered and was pretty bummed about it. The waiter wasn't apologetic at all and didn't even seem to care that it would suck to watch all your friends eating in front of you while you waited for the kitchen to make you something new. To top it all off, the pancakes sans pulled pork was plated in the warming area and the waiter just started chowing down on it. He didn't even offer to comp the screwed up meal or even the coffee. I've have a ton of experience in the food service industry and it took everything in me not to tell the waiter how crappy his service was. My friends aren't the type to cause a fuss, but we were all pretty bummed and none of us tipped him a cent. Hopefully he clued in after that, but I doubt it. Food wise my friend commented that his biscuits and gravy were dry and had very little gravy. My French toast was pretty good, its pretty hard to screw up French toast. Deacon's has been on my list for awhile, the Southern style brunch menu caught my eye. Well I went once last week with my boyfriend. It was OK. We went at 1:30pm, it seemed like there was only one server/runner on shift, he was cordial but a bit snobby whereas we could hear him being sweet to other guests? I DID like the hip diner feel though! Anyways, the food was OK. I had the Chicken Biscuits & Gravy, everything was dry, so I smeared it in gravy which seemed pretty salty. My boyfriend had the special which was a plate sized pancake with fried chicken, he enjoyed his but said his chicken was dry too. All in all it was OK! Been meaning to try this place, being a big breakfast fan. My friend and I went on a Sunday morning around noonsh and had to wait but not too long, maybe 10 minutes. We asked if we could have some coffee while we waited and the waitress brought us some. I had the French toast after seeing a pic on here and it was very good and used nice thick French bread. I had it with sausage which was a patty and not links which was nice for a change. My friend had eggs benny (she substituted biscuits for the englsh muffin) and exclaimed it was the best one she'd had in some time. Had lunch here for the first time today. It seemed pretty out of the way and close to the poorest neighbourhood in the city, so was pleasantly surprised when the place was busy with great energy! The service was friendly and prompt. The food choices and prices were good. My food arrived at my table very quickly, which again surprised me for a full-house - and it was YUMMY! Best eggs,bacon, homemade pie and fried chicken I've had north of the boarder. If it was a little less greasy inside add a star and that would take it to four. My own prejudice knocks it down a star I didn't like the crowd at all. 80% grubby struck up corporate loving(pretend to be the opposite) iPhone, oil product consuming hip-a-crit-sters. And combined with deacons t.v spewing the political cbc that contributes to this greasy crowd of no nothing's self-righteousness. Deacons also has a true BC beer selection a wide variety that I am very proud to see. Most other establishments even much higher priced barely have any bc beer and are always pushing there molson canadian, Budweiser, Heineken generic garbage. This is a great diner that became the obvious choice for a late meal. Our server was friendly and sweet and told us to just grab a seat wherever. She was attentive and quick to grab us menus and drinks. The ambiance is cool and relaxed without any pretentiousness. Dinner was fried chicken, pancakes, chicken stew and a steak salad -- all were simply prepared but good. The sausage patty that came with my friend's pancakes looked like any other puck of meat but it was surprisingly tasty with a spicy kick. The fried chicken was seasoned well and perfectly crisp while moist on the inside. My steak salad was simple (and the steak wasn't of exceptional quality) but with all the chopped veggies, the house dressing and goat cheese the whole thing had great flavor. All our portions were pretty big! We could barely finish all our food and our server was quick to help us wrap anything and get our bill. Great service, great little diner. read more
