I never would have thought to find this place if a friend hadn't recommended -- it's in the back of a Columbia building and faces out to a pretty big outside area that makes it easy to socially distance. We were having dinner nearby but were extremely early, so I looked for a cafe. Google led me to Dear Mama, which is actually inside one of the Columbia buildings. I had an iced matcha latte and it was pretty good. There was live music during our visit - looks like locals performing - which was a nice touch. I was a longtime supporter of Dear Mama East Harlem when I lived on the East Side. Now I live on the West Side and I'm so excited to have Dear Mama again. I am absolutely in love with all the plants in this cafe and the ceiling high glass windows that allow the natural sunlight to come into the cafe. There is so much seating and space, which is atypical of nyc cafes. Lots of people on their laptops doing work here and the outlets are scattered throughout the cafe. This place still delivers delicious lattes. I use to patronized their old location in East Harlem. I likened this area much better because of the large ceilings. The majority of the patrons here look like Columbia students. You are not an odd ball if you bring your laptop and get some work done. We eventually ordered at the counter, but then received no further direction. Coffee pick up is on one side, but food pickup is around the corner. I've been coming here for about 2 years and something has shifted with service lately. The food and drinks are always amazing, but everyone working seems really unhappy :( they started doing table service in the dining room and I'm always so confused by how they do it. I'm always waiting to pay for like 30 minutes after I'm done. I work at a sports bar so I understand people staying after they're done, but I recommend just asking the customers if they are hanging out or if they want to settle up. I'm also confused why they don't have breakfast cocktails! I would be coming here much more often if they had things like bloody marys. Their bev menu is all evening cocktails which is very confusing for the brand? This place could be so great and less of a bad experience if the service was better. The food is to diiiie for which is the only reason I keep coming back. I'm also shocked at the tip options being 20, 25, and 30 when the service is so incredibly mid. I came to this cafe to get some work done during the day because of its great atmosphere. There is a large seating area, and you are able to work here for a long time. The menu is pretty large, so you are able to choose from a wide variety of food and drinks. When you first walk in, you order at the front and specify that your order is for here or the servers will likely assume it is a "to-go" order. When I ordered, the servers gave me a number to set at my table, and I was told that the drink would be brought to my table. However, after I sat down, I heard the barista call my name and had to go pick it up. Although ordering was slightly confusing, I still thought the service was decent and the workers were very kind. I loved the atmosphere of the cafe. There were large plants and even a tree in the lower level. Although the cafe was pretty busy, they had a lot of places to sit. The cafe also has floor-to-ceiling windows which were really nice because we were able to get some sunlight throughout the day. The only small issues that I had were that I found the music to be quite loud, so if you need a quiet place to study, this might not be the correct environment. Also, while there are outlets around the sides, if you are sitting in the middle of the seating area, it might be difficult to plug your laptop in. In terms of the menu, I appreciated that there were a lot of options. Especially as someone who likes to sit in cafes for hours, they had a lot of lunch options to choose from. The Broadway BLT was really good, and I was surprised how good the vegan bacon was; however, I will note that the food and drinks were pretty pricey. While this makes sense since you are not only paying for the food but also paying to sit here, the Broadway BLT was $11 for a pretty small veggie sandwich. I also got a small chai latte with oat milk and that was $7 (including a 20% tip). The chai latte was pretty good as well, but it was quite sweet. This is a place that I do plan on going back to but definitely cannot be a place I come to regularly given the prices. Although the coffee and the food is good the service rates a zero. Today is was so bad that I walked out after being seated. They really need to get their business process clearly defined when it comes to ordering and sitting inside. I first ordered at the register and the cashier stopped to asked where I was sitting and I said I don't know yet. Apparently they changed the policy you have to order from a waiter. So I grabbed an empty table and was reprimanded for not waiting in some undefined area for a waiter to sit me. When I asked "Exactly what is your process, the waiter's response was "It changes each day". Message to the owner: Train your staff to learn how to treat customers better and clearly define the process of eating in vs eating out. You should always take the customers order and facilitate the seating if needed. Its all about customer service no matter how good your coffee is if the service is bad you might as well be serving mud in a paper cup. read more

The good: gorgeous atrium with lots of plants and tables. Coffee tastes great. Staff were generally friendly. The disappointing: 1) Bucking the trend toward vegetarian options, Dear Mama has removed most vegetarian foods from their menu. They used to have avocado and vegan bacon on the menu, now the only vegetarian options are premade oatmeal or parfait. I was told I could order the bacon breakfast sandwich without the bacon, which I did, but it was the same price. I asked if there was anything they could sub and was told no. No egg and cheese sandwich is worth $10, but this one had such runny eggs that half of it ended up falling out as I ate it. The croissant was tasty but turned into a gloopy mess before I got halfway through the sandwich. 2) Everything is served "to go" (in disposable cups/wrappers) even though 95% of orders were people staying to eat inside. It seemed like there were mugs and plates in the back, so next time I'll specifically request them. 3) Prices are a couple dollars higher here than elsewhere in the neighborhood. 4) The utensils are enormous. The spoon is bigger than the cup of oatmeal or parfait. There are small spoons at the counter but the barista told me they're only for staff. Why?! 5) Despite everything being served in single use plastic, there didn't seem to be any recycling bins. read more

More of a place to go to meet with friends and unfortunately I needed a place to do work. The music is too loud to study at least when I went at 12 pm on a Sunday. I got the everything croissant, it was average. I also got an iced dirty chai latte which was tasty. Still a good vibe and atmosphere just wish I was here for fun not homework! Such a cool unique spot to grab a cup of coffee!! I didn't get to try any of their food but I did look over the menu and it all looks really good - I'll hopefully be back in the area to try another time! I got one of their specialty seasonal drinks and it was delicious! My friend who was with me just got a simple oat milk latte but also really enjoyed it. Been wanting to check out this place for a while. This place is very close to my home and is right below one of Columbia's new buildings. It is a great place to have brunch with a friend, grab a cup of coffee/tea and study (plenty of seating indoor & outdoor), or grab something and walk a block to enjoy the beautiful view by the Hudson River. I got their Mexico City Mocha and it's such an interesting drink! It tastes amazing with a tiny kick to it. Loved it! Already thinking of who I can invite to try it next time. Haha. Great cafe to do work and to also get consistently good coffee at. I've only gone here during the summer so I naturally went for their cold brew. There is free wifi and plenty of tables to do work on. There is also an outlet at one or two corners of the place. What I absolutely love about this place is how spacious and bright the cafe is. It is mostly of glass so all of the light comes in. Theres also a great placement of plants within the cafe which instantly makes me feel more calm and productive. Ive tried their lox croissant and it was very delicious. I do have to say, it is a bit pricey but I have also been to cafes that charged way more so I guess I can't really complain too much. Ive had only pleasant experiences here and would recommend this place for anyone who wants to catch up with a friend, sip coffee and read a book, or do some work. I mean a difference of $5 or more in some cases, but I have no concept of proper money management so I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it... I ordered the Notorious BLT 2.0, The Caramel Latte, and some Deep River Chips. I've previously ordered the Smoked Salmon on a croissant and found that to be overpriced and underwhelming. No real flavor, had to add salt and pepper. The sandwich: subpar. barely any tempeh and wasn't that tasty. for the price I expected more of a satisfying sandwich. it was also very small. The latte: lukewarm but interesting flavor. I expected the drink to be less than hot since I ordered delivery. I'm not sure if that effected the flavor but I've had better caramel lattes. The chips: almost $2 for about 10 chips total. laughable. I would try to go in person since the prices would be much cheaper and you'd probably get a hot drink.
