Deedee's was completely awesome tonight. I love Indian food but it was my first time to this spot. It tastes just like home cooked southern Indian buffet. Tonight was Rajasthani with the most amazing mixture of sweet and spicy flavors. I left with a full stomach and a big smile. Come for the food and stay for the atmosphere! Being a regular at Deedee's i find this place quality of food has gone down lately. Not much of Gujurati taste in various dishes, even the Undhiu is different. This is a small place on Lafayette street. They do not have a very fancy interior. What is fancy about them is their food. This is the second time I have gone here, and I am as impressed as I was the last time. They have a particular cuisine specially prepared for each day. I have tasted their Gujarati and Maharashtrian spread. They are just delicious. This is as close to home cooked food as it can get. They actually serve hot phulkas while you are eating (of course, you can pick up other parathas/bread at the buffet). They make the phulkas(bread) with and without ghee. The other entrees are not very oily and greasy. I can definitely vouch that there is no cooking soda in the food here, unlike many Indian restaurants who use it in their buffet food. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants food close to home-cooked food, especially from the Western part of India! read more

When I place an order and turn up to pick up my food, they are genuinely surprised to see me. Not cool. Note to self - Go to Deedees on an empty stomach. The food is so delicious, you'll regret it if you go without an appetite. I don't know where to begin on the amazing variety that is available at the buffet. Rest assured that it is all freshly prepared and tastes "out of this world" delicious. The make-your-own-pani-puri is the best way to start. This will get your appetite going full throttle. Next move onto the aloo tikki with chole and freshly mixed bhelpuri which always tastes superb. Warning: don't fill up on all this just yet! Fresh rotis (chapatis) keep making the rounds, brought by the friendly servers who treat all guests like family. Depending on the menu for the day, the vegetable curries/dishes might vary, but one of my all-time favorites is the Gujarati dish Undhiyu, which is finger-licking-delicious. There are several other curries, typically Punjabi kadhi, saag (spinach), dal (lentils) all of which you can eat with rotis or rice. Make sure to leave room for the best dessert in the world - puris and shrikhand! Shrikhand is a strained yogurt dessert, made thick and creamy, mixed with nuts and cardamom. It should be eaten with the fresh puris which they keep well stocked - I could make a meal just from eating this! As a friendly reminder - go to Deedees on an empty stomach. The food is so amazing, you'll want to try a bit of everything! In spite of being late, the food seemed fresh and most of the buffet vessels were filled with fresh food. I really had a very bad experience here. First of all I encountered with this arrogant owner, followed by rest of members. I agree it was 31st Dec and there was none in the restaurant except us. But that doesnt give right to the owner and his family to haste us through dinner. Every employee was coming to us and telling that we are winding up in 5 minutes, it was 7:30 PM and the restaurant says will be open till 8:30. ZERO customer satisfaction. Apart from that the food was very very bland... Kadhi....it had not ginger...and excess of turmeric. Paneer mutter....low in salt and the mutter was frozen one. mixed curry....bland taste The cook never bothered to wear an apron in kitchen, I could see her touching all the food bare handed and without wearing apron. I would have given only one star but the second star is only due to the amrakhand was very good, also the chapati was good. Scrumptious Indian food!! We walked into Deedee's one of the weekends after a 4-hour hike and a tiring drive. As always, I wasn't expecting anything great. I can say my expectations are too high and none of the Indian restaurants around have met them. The sight of the buffet spread was mouthwatering! Right from pani puri, bhel puri to sabudana vada. Aamras was totally out of the world! The staff make you feel homely and make sure you try everything. We ate till our tummies were happy and full. We were barely able to walk! 3 stars because I ordered a dinner for 25 people from Deedee's party platter and the food was good BUT two items were not good at all - the Roti was nothing like they show in their Ads and video and the Undhyu (Gujarati delicacy) was not tasty at all....other items were pretty good. We visited on a weekend for lunch. Food was cold and felt stale. Not tasty at all. There was only one other couple at the restaurant and they seemed to be struggling with the food as well. After struggling to find something decent to eat, while we were leaving after paying, the gentleman manning the cash register asked for feedback. We told him it wasn't great and everything was cold. He looked towards the kitchen and made a comment to the cook (who was presumably his wife), "Yeh kehte hain khaana thanda hai". That's it! Nothing more... I pretty much binged on the chaat (Us Eastbay folks are severely chaat deprived) While the pani puri kicked butt, the bhel left a lot to be desired. It pretty much tasted like the base of a Punjabi sabzi topped with the dry bhel. Gork?! I also ate some really good Daal bati, gatta nu shaak, churma laddoo (I managed to eat 2 pieces!! Gluttony should not be a vice :-P), pakoras and methi parathas. The gatta though was rock hard. But the shaak yummay~ Oh and well, when I saw Shrikhand (which I haven't eaten in over 4 years!) I just couldn't resist. I literally went kookoo. And all for $12! Ambiance is uber cute. Very homey. But it's CASH only for under $15. So, big FAIL resulting in one star deduction. Great vegetarian food which makes you feel at home. The owners are very warm and welcoming and they serve fresh tawa rotis at your table. We really enjoyed the Gujarati Thali, with an assortment of sabzis and dal and kadhi. The pav bhaji was the only preparation which could have been worked upon a bit. read more

The girl in Check please Bay Area is definitively a relative of the owners or she is getting her food for free! A very small place with such a small selection of items, way less than what most of Indian buffet restaurants offer in the Bay Area. If you like the style of mom and pop restaurants and low standards you might like it...me thinks not. Also, it seemed they cannot face popularity because the day after the tv program it was full and the owner + waiters where not paying attention to customers entering the narrow room. I am very picky about Indian food and I have to say that the food which Daksha & Suketu Desai provided us for dinner last night was EXCEPTIONALLY good. DeeDee's gets top marks for serving standout food in modest surroundings. I'm still enjoying weekend lunch buffet I had a few hours ago. The dishes were completely different from the standard Indian-buffet offerings like chicken tikka and palak paneer. I can't even name the dishes we had at DeeDee's because I've never had this stuff before: fried potato dumplings; fried lentil hush puppies; curries made with eggplant, potato, chickpeas, and cauliflower; some kind of amazing sauce flavored with saffron and about 25 other spices...the list goes on. This weekend they were serving crispy little hollow puffed things that you fill with beans, corn, and some delightful green sauce and pop into your mouth. There was another dish comprised of the same little puffs (maybe the broken ones?) combined with vegetables, yogurt, and spices. There were two amazing desserts: a farina-type thing with raisins, corn, sweet syrup, and coconut; and a tangy saffron-mango-yogurt pudding flecked with spices and nuts. All in all, it was a big International party in my mouth. I couldn't sing along, but my taste buds could dance to the beat. We were the only non-Indians there, which I took to be a good sign. The food is vegetarian but I never missed the meat. The place was packed and my husband and I waited for about half an hour to get in. Some reviewers complain that the food wasn't fresh, but the turnover was so fast that new things were being brought to the buffet every few minutes. Although it's a buffet, there are still servers who walk through to give you fresh bread, fill your water glass, and pick up dirty plates.
